Tell me this is not a help-vampire. Go ahead, I dare ya.

3:12 AM
That is the only sane response to a kid asking us for writing advice about his book report, due Wednesday.
All I asked for is a word that could fit and you have given me is a linguistics lesson. — Arithmetician 10 mins ago
You’re welcome. — tchrist 9 mins ago
:)
Yes, I know I’m being a little bit wicked. But hey, I didn’t give him Peter Rabbit. For that privilege and pleasure, he has to come here. Which he won’t.

5 hours later…
7:47 AM
mowneen
@emfcamp was amazing. A. Mazing. A+ will attend again :D

8:19 AM
@MattЭллен What camp did you attend?

@JasperLoy EMF Camp

English Males and Females?

Electromagnetic Field

Really?

8:20 AM
What was it about?

it's a camp where hackspaces get together and share information and there are talks and workshops and song and dance and drinking and fun

Wow! Did you meet any Maria?

No. I met lots of interesting people.
@JasperLoy How was your weekend?

@MattЭллен I stayed mostly at home and watched television. Packed some stuff for reservist training.

@JasperLoy more training! when does that happen?

8:30 AM
@MattЭллен Well, there might be one two-day event next month, but it's not a big deal. My sleep is improving too.

@JasperLoy that's good to hear. I didn't sleep too well at the camp, but I slept well last night :D

Next week, I see my shrink. I will ask him what he thinks about me going off meds.
@MattЭллен Did you sleep outside your home during the camp?

@JasperLoy I was in a tent

Some camps are day camps, you go home at night!
I would no longer feel any excitement camping outside. I just want my bed at home.

true. I stayed at my friends' home when I went to Sonisphere, so I didn't camp that time
that was nice.

8:33 AM
No wonder you were not around during the weekend.
Kit did not come to chat either.

yeah :D I peeked at the site a couple of times, but there was so much going on that I didn't really visit
@Kit would have enjoyed EMFCamp

I would never ever go to a camp, unless it is a camp full of Marias!

there was childcare and workshops for kids, as well as for adults

Maria, Maria, that's all there is in my mind.

Seems a bit obsessive!

8:36 AM
Well, it's alright as long as I enjoy it. Thinking about future Marias gives me hope.

fair enough

The worst camp I went to was when I could not bathe for 5 days. That was in the army.
After the first day everyone got so smelly that we could not smell anything anymore, so it was not smelly.

yeah, that's no fun. EMFCamp had nice showers

I forgot everything I learnt about electricity and magnetism.
I think there was some left hand rule or right hand rule, lol.

don't stick your fingers in plug sockets, don't let magnets near your magnetic storage. that's about all you need ;)

8:43 AM
I am looking forward to next year. Next year I will start studying math again on my own. I hope I don't come to chat then!

sounds like a good step forward

Well, I have said that the past few years, if you may remember.
Always with the hope that there will be no further delays.
So from now till the end of the year, I must try to stabilise my mind as much as possible.

If I were to get a new laptop say, how much RAM should I be going for? Currently my desktop has 4 GB and my laptop has 2 GB.

what will you be doing with it?

8:47 AM
Nothing special, just surfing the internet. I never bought a computer, so I ask.

all you'd need is the minimum spec for the OS you are using, then. 4GB is enough for that at the moment.

OK. I intend to get Windows 64 bit in the distant future, too tired of Linux!
Office has one big advantage over LibreOffice.
It is much better for typing equations.

I see. I've not tried doing that

I have been drinking much coffee recently. I should switch back to tea.

I can't get a taste for coffee.
it's not palatable for me

8:59 AM
My favourite cafe is Starbucks, though I don't often go these days.

Yippee i was outside of class for 2 lecture, for commenting when lecture was going on.

well, if you're going to interrupt other people's learning, you should be out of the class
were your comments pertinent to the class?

No. I commented on my friend's crush when she was answering. lol

yeah, so that's not helpful.
while school could be called obedience training through the veneer of education, some learners actually find it useful.

@Freddy Did you do it on purpose to get out?

9:10 AM
Yes i wanted to play basket ball

You are a naughty boy.

You tell me what is better sleeping or playing.

depends how tired I am

did you guys have ever done this all stuff in your school.

I did skip a few lessons in secondary school.
@skullpatrol Welcome back with your original face, lol.

9:19 AM
@Freddy not that I recall.

@JasperLoy :D

@skullpatrol Do you have a favourite calculus textbook?

I like Thomas.

OK. I am still trying to decide what mine is.

There are a lot of choices...

9:22 AM
Yes, which is why I am still trying to finalise my reading list for next year.

Take your time and think it over carefully
Some people like to study from multiple textbooks

Which level mathematics you both study?

I used to know a guy who never bought a single textbook, he just used the university library as his source.

@Freddy university level, not your cup of tea.

@skullpatrol boy do I miss having access to a university library!

9:31 AM
@MattЭллен Yes, I miss it too. Now I just depend on Russian pirate sites!

@RutvikSutaria I study IIT level maths, so don' t mess with me, lol

@Freddy Did you mean Indian Institute of Terrorism

@RutvikSutaria OMG you don't know full form of IIT. How will you crack their exam?

10:10 AM
Hi all
"She is an expert in Visualization skills"
^ Is this sentence correct?

V should not be capitalised.

ohh ok thanks

or "She is an expert in visualization"
or "She is skilled in visualization"
or "She is a visualization expert"
or for British English, "visualisation"

Well done @hugo

10:34 AM
@skullpatrol Do you know about authors.library.caltech.edu? I downloaded Marsden's Calculus 1,2,3 legally from there.

You @Mr_Green are correct in thinking that visualization is an acquired skill.
Yes @JasperLoy those are very good books.
Cal tech has one of the best collections of Physics textbooks.

room topic changed to English Language & Usage: Alles Erworbene bedroht die Maschine (no tags)

They used the Feynman Lectures for 20 years. @JasperLoy

@skullpatrol Aha!

A: Division of a sentence into structural and functional parts

sandayu momochiIn order to answer this question, it needs to be clarified what it means that a sentence consists of structural and functional elements. A sentence is built of elements which are organised in a particular way. From a purely structural point of view, a sentence consists of (a) word(s) and/or (a) ...

tl;dr

10:42 AM
The answerer is very generous with his time.

Where else are you going to find a Nobel prize winner willing to teach first year physics?

I am going to watch TV.

Today's Listening | Garage / Chillout

11:10 AM
@skullpatrol thanks.. that is not my thought though :)
"Mac Book" or "Mac book" or "Macbook" or "MacBook"?

ask Apple.

ahh nvm got answer by googling
"MacBook"

11:35 AM
This was four days ago. The Russians may have conquered more land in the meantime.

@Matt university libraries allow nonstudents to pay a monthly charge for the use of their library card.
And what's even better is you get access to their interlibrary loan system :-)

11:59 AM
@Cerberus The Guns of August: Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

I'm digging the Wikipedia beta experimental stuff ... So cool :D
Not to mention their direct access to the World Library Catalogue.

@Robusto Hm I did not know that book.
@skullpatrol Sounds good, like what?

You know, all that mathy physics stuff I'm into :-)

12:15 PM
@Cerberus It's a classic, perhaps the classic, history of the start of WWI.

leaked nudes as byproducts of a surveillance culture in which the body is a patriarchal commodity only accessible through a puritanical lens

Way too late, huh?

Leaky nudes? I don't wanna click.

Would be nice if there was a way to kick the leaker in the nuts. Just a few times.

then he wouldn't be able to leak for a while

1:05 PM
ha! yeah
I am, of course, assuming this is being done by a male. I could be wrong

they are just looking for dirty laundry

@tchrist :) What he needs is something like 'modestly' or 'self-deprecatingly' but he is so ...what's the word... entitled? that I can't give it.
@skullpatrol I think that would lead to him leaking more. what with all the loose nuts.

perhaps

@MattЭллен Some try to crack the passwords into the Pentagon. Some try to find Easter Eggs in Mario Cart XVI. Other try to hack women's phones. This generations best minds.
@Robusto Also, it's out of date already.
By two days.

1:21 PM
@Mitch at least the first and second ones have some potential social benefit.

I don't recognize the name of any of the nudes.

1:38 PM
@Mitch Out of date in the sense that the events in question have changed?

1 hour later…
2:56 PM
@Robusto No, because it's not August, anymore it is now September. General mirth ensues.

Fuck. Did Safari just unsupport watch expressions in their debugger? I can't find where to watch an expression. I'd use Chrome, but I'm trying to debug iPad shit.

Q: If you want to know how English works, refer to this page!

AraucariaOne of the most often referred to pages on ELU when it come to queries regarding verb forms, tense and aspect is the following: How do the tenses and aspects in English correspond temporally to one another? If you visit this page, you'll find two answers. One is a diagrammatic representatio...

What is Araucaria's problem?

they don't like that questions that are not answered by that question are closed as duplicates of that question. Although they don't provide any examples of such

Dunno. I think it's quite apparent that the question and its answers cover everything you need to know about English.
And then some.
We should create a Universal Canonical Question About English (UCQAE, pronounced "Uh-kay!"), and answer it in one short sentence. Then we can proceed to close all new questions as being dupes of this one. But what would that one short sentence be?
"Don't talk while you're chewing your food!"
Because chewing while speaking English makes it hard to understand what you're saying.
You're welcome.

3:11 PM
cool. let's close the site

3:25 PM
@Mitch The tenses diagram over-simplifies too much for Araucaria's taste. Therefore they consider it inadequate to be a general-purpose answer to any tense question, and therefore they'd prefer if we stopped using it as such.
It's a fair criticism, I think.
The diagram works best as a cheat sheet if you already know how the tenses are supposed to work, but forgot something, or want to double-check it.

The answer to that criticism of the ["close as duplicate"] practice is to provide a better answer.

Well, you can't provide a better answer if the question is closed.

It's not closed. It's protected.

Q: How do the tenses and aspects in English correspond temporally to one another?

RobustoNon-native speakers often get confused about what the various tenses and aspects mean in English. With input from some of the folk here I've put together a diagram that I hope will provide some clarity on the matter. I offer it as the first answer to this question. Consider it a living document....

Well, THAT question arguably can't be answered without writing a book

It was written way back before there was an ELL, and it was designed to stem the onrushing tide of ELL folks who wanted to know why "I eat" doesn't necessarily mean "I'm eating right now" . . .

3:28 PM
but other, more focused questions which get closed as dupes of that question, could be answered succinctly, but they are closed as dupes.

It was meant to be a graphical help to let those folks know a little about how we use time expressions in English, but obviously it can never be an exhaustive explanation of all the permutations.

@Robusto Yeah don't get me wrong. It's a useful diagram. But I think we can agree that it doesn't capture every nuance.

> Non-native speakers often get confused about what the various tenses and aspects mean in English.
It says so right in the first sentence.
QED
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Who says it does?

Right. So as a general help guide for how tenses work it's fine. But Araucaria is claiming that people are using it as the canonical answer for any tense-related question.

So: if there's an answer missing from that duplicate target, add the answer. Or, come back to your closed question and edit it to explain what's still the issue. That's how on-hold questions are supposed to work, after all, and the closure text says that too.

3:30 PM
@AndrewLeach The problem is that people are, in Araucaria's opinion, voting to close questions as dupes that are not dupes and not answered by that link.
They are asking us to stop using that answer that way.
Araucaria would probably like to write an answer for one of those questions, but cannot, because it is closed.

Does he provide examples of questions that were closed?

No but I've seen questions closed that way in the past.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 But that's how duplicates are supposed to work. A duplicate is not an exact duplicate. Those questions are merged.

There are 150 questions linked to that question. english.stackexchange.com/questions/linked/21846?lq=1

The duplicate says "You can find the answer here". You might have to look for it, and even read between the lines a bit. That's fine.

3:32 PM
@AndrewLeach But Araucaria's position is that the questions should not be linked as duplicate at all.
@AndrewLeach And when you go "here" and find that there is no answer? and that the linked question is not really applicable, just superficially related? Where do you put your new shiny answer? It doesn't belong on the older question.

In that case, you edit your question, and say "I looked here, and I can't find an answer to [whatever enhanced question you're really asking]"

It's a common belief that questions should not be 'closed as duplicate' unless the two questions are identical. Common but mistaken.
2

@AndrewLeach "edit your question"... except Araucaria isn't asking the question. They want to answer the question.

It was never intended as a canonical Q/A. Not my fault, I was sincerely Just Trying To Help People. Another example of no good deed going unpunished.

So edit the canonical target to provide a better answer we can continue to link to.

3:34 PM
@Robusto Nobody's punishing you or even complaining about your answer.
@AndrewLeach So then over time the "canonical target" just gets broader and broader, and the original questions just get more and more out of date?

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 The answer has had more than its share of controversy.

@Robusto Everything popular is controversial.

I'm not at the point of regretting having written it, but it's getting close to that.

Consider two questions: "How do computers work?" and "How do I configure the sound driver on my Linux system to reduce jitter when recording from multiple audio sources at once?"

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇: broader than "How do the tenses and aspects in English correspond temporally to one another?" Not easy to conceive.

3:37 PM
You could argue that the 2nd is a duplicate of the first.
@TimLymington Araucaria starts out by saying that THAT question is Too Broad and unanswerable and I agree.
Closing everything as a duplicate of a Too Broad just seems wrong.
The first question is Too Broad, but Historical, and has a Popular Answer that addresses the too-broad subject broadly. Then every specific question gets closed as a dupe of that first one. This prevents proper answers from being found with their actual questions.
@TimLymington I'm not operating under the belief that questions need be identical to be "duplicate". But the answers should apply to both questions. And there are lots of cases where someone closed something as a duplicate, but the "original" and the "dupe" don't actually cover the same ground or have answers that apply to both; they are just superficially related.

We simply can't answer every question asked about tenses; unless Your Question can be distinguished from Robusto's, YQ will have to be closed.

@TimLymington But Robusto's question doesn't answer every question asked about tenses. Why should it be used as a dupe target for every question asked about tenses?

@tchrist It's a Vietnamese name, so I'd guess the user is from Vietnam.

3:54 PM
Phuc Nguyen
and Bietzsche is German

@AndrewLeach Or exploiting the whole "it's a Vietnamese name" thing to get over on us.
@nosmoking And don't forget Karl Fuchs.

and Van Den Crotch

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Now that I examine Auricaria's profile page, I see he/she is a linguistics student. Since linguistics folks have been the ones most likely to get a burr under their saddle about this question and answer in the past (no joke intended), perhaps that's what prompted the meta question.

Thank you iCloud🍕💩
Never heard of her before

Uh, spoiler alert.

4:03 PM
I never liked Kirsten Dunst.

@Robusto Yes, Araucaria's posting history has some "controversial" linguistic opinions. But irregardless, I think the point stands. That question as 150 links to it, I'm sure there are many that are not adequately answered by it, and yet that question isn't the place for the more specific answer those "dupe" questions need.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Is there such a word as irregardless?

I looked at a few of the links, and most of my sampling had been closed by @Reg. If we can't rely on him to do the right thing, who can we rely on?

@JasperLoy Yes. It means the same as "regardless"
@Robusto He's good, but not always right.

Yeah, in Bizarro World.

4:07 PM
@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I think there is also overexaggerate.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 I would say that, as a rule of thumb, he is right more often than he's wrong about such matters.

@Mr.ShinyandNew安宇 Nobody is always right, lol.

@Robusto But this might be a case of "he's not wrong, but he could be righter"
2

@skullpatrol Instead, he might leak all the time.

@Robusto We did not read it at university.
Hobsbawn is world famous.
I think we read him for the course about WWI, Hades have his soul.

4:23 PM
Here is an example of a question closed as a duplicate of Rob's chart:
3
Q: "have been" versus "had been" in questions

Paul Possible Duplicate: How do the tenses in English correspond temporally to one another? "I can tell that he's not English, but I wouldn't had been able to tell that he's french if you didn't tell me first" it was told me that this kind of usage is wrong, and that I should have used "I ...

Lawler explains in the comments why the correct choice is "would have" and not "would had", which is that modals are followed by infinitives.
On the surface, it seems like it's a question about tense, but really it's not.

I learned this last month, to not underestimate a medicament
it made me leave my autism, I feel completely alone now, weird feelings

@nosmoking What do you mean?

@JasperLoy the medicament changed me, now I'm more open-minded

@nosmoking So you feel better or worse?

I feel worse, because I don't like changes, but better since people around me said it's better

Are you happier or sadder?

5:06 PM
at the moment, I'm apathetic, no real feelings, a bit tired always, so I can't really know happier or not
a bit hating my doctor to be honest, his medicament gave me a big shock
@JasperLoy I have no idea how to occupy my days

@nosmoking Do something you like. For example, study mathematics.

hmm, maybe, but I don't feel like doing it now, unlike 2 months ago
I'm going to sort my old courses, and check which to throw at the bin
almost everything

@nosmoking When you feel bored, just think of the future, think of what you wanna do to bring yourself happiness

@JasperLoy good idea
the near or far future, I see
Is plasma the 4th state of mateer?

@nosmoking For instance, I am thinking about what books to study next year. I have yet to finalise my reading list.

@MattЭллен are you back? Did you want to write for the Writer's Asynchronous Chat?

yes, not yet
eat then write

Even Jasper wrote something!

6:16 PM
chat is dead

6:32 PM
@nosmoking This song just came on my radio and I thought of you

@nosmoking Wait... are you saying that your meds, which reduce your autism, is making you feel lonely?
@JasperLoy what are you reading -now-? What do you read for (math) fun (i.e. not class prep but just to know about general math things)?

@Mitch Nothing. I am trying to stabilise my mind.

By meditation techniques? by TV or gaming?

By sorting out my confused thoughts by talking to myself. That is my self therapy.

6:47 PM
Is it working?

It is more of a constant effort with constant effect. So it works for me.
However, some things take a long time to think through.
Sometimes things are too confusing and you need to come back to it later.

Keep up the effort. Self-dialogue is a very effective technique for some people.

@skullpatrol Do you read any other math than calculus now?

yes

I am going to sleep in 10 min. I like to announce in advance

6:52 PM
sleep well

I will see you in my dreams, lol.

user116848
hi

user116848
everyone

user116848
:)

6:53 PM
hi pal

@Arrowfar has become an arrow

user116848
hey pals

user116848
@JasperLoy How is your OCD these days?

Is there anyone using Windows 8 here?

user116848
Not me

6:54 PM
@Arrowfar Nothing new to add, trying to get better.

user116848
Using Win 7

user116848
I see

Can 8 be made to look like 7?

user116848
I can't say

I am wondering what 9 will look like.
They really should go back to the look of 7.

user116848
6:55 PM
@skullpatrol skull was it you in the photo that you uploaded yesterday?

@Arrowfar That was another man, lol

user116848
7 is pretty good imo

user116848
@JasperLoy Oh, I see hah :)

@Arrowfar Is the show desktop button in 7 on the bottom right?

@Arrowfar I was having fun with a guy from the math room :-)

user116848
6:56 PM
@skullpatrol hah :)

user116848
@JasperLoy On right

:17467109 Left or right?
OK

user116848
On right, sorry I mixed it up

I configured my Linux desktop to have show desktop on bottom right too!

user116848
@JasperLoy But I have never used that button (until now). Therefore had to look for it :)

6:59 PM
@Arrowfar Haha

user116848
:D

Looks like you did not do much configuring of your desktop

user116848
Yes I keep it as it is

Many people just use the default, which sometimes looks ugly

user116848
Apart from some shortcuts etc

7:01 PM
I only have a bar at the bottom, nothing else. My desktop is also completely blue.

user116848
But I use black background. It doesn't strain eyes imo.

Blue makes me feel calm.
Red makes me feel anxious.

Your avatar color of deep blue degrades nicely in the side bar to purple then pastel purple then powdered sugar purple, then really too light to tell.

it's everywhere in the news but you can't see the actual bloody pics anywhere. all taken down. looks like her breach of privacy wasnt too bad after all

It was pretty bad.
The whole thing is just awful
They're still up in places too.

it's barely 0.01% as bad as a beheading by terrorists, for instance

The fact that '#TheFappening' was trending on twitter makes me really really mad

The whole thing just infuriates me.

9:08 PM
why?

Just because somebody is rich and famous doesn't mean they shouldn't get to take nudie pics for their hubby like everybody else without the whole world jerking off to them

i dont have an SO to take nude pics for. maybe they should be like me. lol.
i like this from liveleak

@Jez No.

anyway, we live in an age where certain individuals can enjoy massively more fame and luxury than ever was possible before
it seems like fair turnaround that sometimes, they get far more 'negative' attention too. they sought the fame.

Hey, jack-in-office mod of the week, go ahead and make my day. Delete this answer because it doesn't cite a source for something so obvious as rainbow colors! — Robusto 10 secs ago

I've always wondered if everybody sees colours the same way.

Whether we do or we don't, the basic rainbow is still so divided and the colors so named: ROY G BIV. It's a commonplace.

So yeah, everybody calls them by the same names.

Yeah, who knows the difference between indigo and violet these days?

All I'm saying.
