Oh, I just realised that by the Ctrl key you did in fact mean the Control key on Mac. I was assuming that almost all functions performed by the Ctrl key on Windows would be performed by the Command key.

I really do usually just say what I mean without a great deal of metaphor.
Plus I don’t know what all that stuff you’re talking about even means. I’m a Unix guy.
Why you would have thought that control didn’t mean control, I have no earthly idea.

@AndrewLeach: Are you around?

Circling in on him, eh?
What a donkey’s behind!

Q: The use of "not" in idiomatic English

Michael BurrowsMany media outlets have recently used the phrase "Pentagon experts on Friday said it was impossible to imagine that the missile could not have been fired without Russian help". Is the "not" a mistake or idiomatic English? https://www.google.co.uk/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&rlz=1C1AVSI_enGB459...

He embedded the LMGTFY right in his effulent question!

I dunno, I just assumed from my reading that the equivalent of a control key on Windows is the Command key on Mac.

@Alraxite I don’t know.
I virtually never use that key.

11:14 PM
So you only ever use your thumbs for the Spacebar?

I imagine so. I’ve never thought about it.

Okay. I think it's a good idea to have control on either side of the spacebar.

I’m a keyboardist, not a video gamer.
@Andrew He has not taken the hint. In fact, he’s dug in his heels.

No, not for video games. For typing. I can use the caps lock to set hotkeys of my own choosing.
Like the arrow keys.
And other keys.
Like Esc.
Most definitely Esc.
It's too far.

ESC is to the left of 1.
Not quite too far.

11:19 PM
It's above of 1 for me.

A little uncomfy, but doable.

In line with the function keys.

Well, that’s your problem right there.
:)
You really need a better keyboard. Or a better keyboard mapping.

I will definitely remap.
Where are your function keys?

It’s worth it.
What function keys?
What would I use a function key for?

11:20 PM
F1, F2, ...
Ah.
OK.

Never used ’em in my fife.

You can right click items in windows if you press F10+Shift.
Also refresh with F2.
And Alt+F4 quits applications.

You keep using that four-letter word. Refresh is ^R or ^L.

Did you bind these yourself?
Or is this default in Macs?

No, it’s just what vi or less uses.
I spend all my time in xterms.

11:22 PM
What about here?
This text box doesn't support vim shortcuts.
Well, refresh is a browser thing.
So ^R will work.

Boy, you would be surprised what you can do with Pentadactyl.

Hah.
That's what got me into this.

picks up his hammer and saw

I'm also going to start using vim.
I've already used it a bit.
Anyway, so if browsing is the only thing you do, then I suppose you can pretty much do anything without leaving the home row.

Bingo!
I do a lot of thing besides “browsing”.
I write programs.
I run programs.
I move files around.
I rename files.
I delete them.

11:27 PM
All from either the command line or vim.

I compile programs.
Of course.

A: Can “itch” be a transitive verb, i.e., can an itch be itched?

Simon Desmartassthis discussion is making my ass itch how about that one

Note the username.
It's overnegated, all right. Impossible, not, and without are all negatives (and imagine is an added hypothetical note). As Larry Horn puts it, "Simplex negatio negat, duplex negatio affirmat, triplex negatio confundit." — John Lawler 10 mins ago

Cute.

So is Lawler for a change.
Well, or Horn.

I like the smell of flags in the Stack Exchange

Oh say can you see. . . ?

11:34 PM
I thought that you, here on ELU could give me some fast answer about how it is problematic, or some translation table or something like that. I asked a question on Stack Overflow too, and I got an answer there too, so thank you for your contributions. Here on ELU I got more answers and on SO only one but with library which I need. Have a nice day. PS: Answer at SO is this link where are libraries for transforming SAMPA (ASCII representation of pronunciation) to IPA. — dalton 19 mins ago
Gah, that just scared the shit out of me.

No shit.

The link leads to the site of a former colleague.

I'm still full of shit, so I guess I wasn't scared enough.

I didn't expect to bump into Mr Theiling again like that.
The world is small.

I thought it was Kirshenbaum at first, but it isn’t.
It isn’t SAMPA either, however; or if it is, it’s a non-standard variant.

11:36 PM
Two Degrees of Henrik Theiling.
@tchrist there's a legend that says precisely that. So.

I still want to know what "a leg up the greasy" might mean in Brit slang.

He actually asked identical questions on two different SE sites.

Henrik constructed a language every year.

Pronunctiation.

11:37 PM
Greasy pole, maybe?

Check.

What an unpleasant image.

He probably doesn’t realize that duplicate questions are misliked by the Management.

In my capacity as The Management I have informed him thusly.

Well doned.

11:40 PM
@RegDwigнt I thought you were The Help.

@Robusto that is your The Problem right there.

Q: Email of replay to some one ask about me

Mahaabsolutely I'm remember you. I'm doing great, thank you for asking! Now I'm lecturing at Ahlia University

@Robusto I believe that he is actually The Custard.

Remind me to never recommend Ahlia University to anyone.

That did it, Buster: I truly came fucking close to falling off my chair. The kitties have come in to see what’s wrong.

One of my Very Bad Cats got out of the house the other day. He thought he could get the birds to come down and play with him by mewling at them.

11:44 PM
One brought in a full-sized but baby-with-spots robin last night, completely unharmed. I captured and released it.

My, my, my Ahlia.
Why, why, why, Ahlia?

Shiny.

St Alia of the Knife.

Indeed.
And in fact.

11:45 PM
But I must be off again!
Shine on through, you two.

@Kit I actually think it originated at the Daily Mail, which is the most repulsive rag in all of Britain. They are utter idiots.

I chose that one for a reason.

@tchrist Well, now that The News of the World is shuttered.

Ok.
imagines whirled peas
I think I have a clip for this.

11:57 PM
I see that Ice Girl is back with a new account on ELL.
