It is true that those rebels are mostly not bumpkins, but Russian soldiers and officers, and people trained by them.

And yet Russian regulars would probably not have done this: they had nothing to gain by shooting down a civilian plane, and they would have been skilled enough to make out the kind of plane.

It was suggested somewhere that the rebels/irregulars may have fired the missile without using a command-and-control unit.
