I didn't make up facade.
What is FF saying here? That you can use began in past perfect?
0
A: past perfect tense with the conjunction "and"

FumbleFingersBoth versions (began and begun) are perfectly normal and valid. Technically speaking, begun here should be preceded by had, but in fact there's no need to repeat it, because there's implied repetition of OP's preceding HAD anyway... I had drawn my gun and [had] started shooting before I reco...

I'm sure he doesn't mean that, but it sounds like he didn't read the question carefully.

façade /fəˈsɑːd/.

Etymology: a. Fr. façade, f. face, after Ital. facciata, f. faccia face sb.

1. a. The face or front of a building towards a street or other open place, esp. the principal front. Also attrib. or as adj., of an architectural design concerned with elegance, etc., in the façade of a building alone. Hence faˈçadism, such a practice or principle.

1656-81 in Blount Glossogr.
1717 Berkeley Tour in Italy Wks. 1871 IV. 534 ― We observed the façades of many noble buildings.
1756-7 tr. Keysler’s Trav. (1760) II. 397 ― The inner façade was repaired by Bernini.
@Robusto He’s wrong.
There is no "technically you should have had here" business.
> I had already drunk and swum and sung and run, all before the firing squad came for me.

AFK while cleaning out my trunk. And no, I'm not an elephant.

You’re unpachyderming.
possible duplicate of Double negation. Technically speaking, "I dont know nothing" is a "double negative", often thought to be "uneducated". Much the same applies to using pretty to mean quite/very/significantly. Using lower-case "i" for first person singular also looks "ignorant" in all but the most informal contexts (it looks pretty bad here! :) — FumbleFingers 18 mins ago
He’s apparently caught a “technically speaking” meme this morning.

2:27 PM
I like FF.
I usually agree with his intuitions and/or way of thinking.

Ok.
His last two thingies had “technically speaking” things in them, used in ways that seemed oxymoronic.
I think he probably should have just used supposedly or allegedly or some say, or some such.
I’d rather go picnicking than nitpicking.

I don't understand the "technically incorrect" part. What does "technically" even mean? — RegDwight АΑA May 23 at 10:37

He appears to mean 'strictly (speaking)'.
Perhaps not the most appropriate word.

@RegDwightАΑA Technically speaking, technically is a high-tech word that means "in reference to the technique displayed" (but only in a technical sense).
Hope that clears it up for you.

Caesar technically addressed Brutus as he died.
καὶ σὺ τέκνον

2:39 PM
How is Germany today?

As Brutus died? I thought it was the other way around? Silly English!
@Cerberus Same as usual. Oh, were you talking to @Reg?

Don't post Greek when I'm on my mobile!

And Caesar didn't speak Greek! Especially after being stabbed!

@Rob I was expecting something like 'hot, but thanks.

You want "hot butt thanks" — well, you'll not get that here. At least not from me. Maybe @Reg will oblige.

2:41 PM
He is said to have uttered the sentence in question in Greek.
Projection.

Is he now? Qualis artifex pereo!
A bit pretentious for someone who was stabbed, like, 25 times.

Are you pereunt? Do tell us how that happened.

@Robusto “Caesar didn’t speak Greek”???? WTH? Caesar was no uneducated booby-boy, you know!

@Cerberus No, not me. My name is Nero. I mean Nemo. I mean ...
@tchrist I kid.

You mean Odeis-slash-Odysseus.
*Oudeis

2:45 PM
Tempus est jocundum, o virgines
Modo cum gaudete vos juvenes!

Oh, Oh, totus floreo!
Iam amore virginali totus ardeo!
Novus, Novus amor est quo pereo!

And then a Nero comes along
With the strength to carry on,
And you cast your fears aside,
And you know you can survive.
So when you feel like hope is gone
Look inside you and be strong,
And you'll finally see the truth
That the Nero lies in you.

@Cerberus Speaking of which, the chorus in David Bedford's The Odyssey pronounce Odysseus as "Oh-day-sooss" — is that the correct pronunciation?

Welcome to the Poetry Chat
@Robusto IPA me, Bob.

@Rob No, I'm afraid not.

@tchrist Mirus mirus mirus amor est quo pereo! (IIRC).

2:46 PM
Upsilon as ? Nah.

@tchrist You need to be over 21 to drink IPA in this state.

I don't recognize that pronunciation at all, never heard anything like that.

@Robusto No, it’s novus novus novus novus est quo pereo.

Ah, that's right.

quo pereo, quo pereo, quo pereo.

2:48 PM
One of my favorite carmina of that burana.

/o.dy.seys/ or /-sews/, rather.

Maybe it's impossible to stretch the upsilon in a choral work? Or at least unseemly?

/y/ being French u.
I don't think anyone ever used classical pronunciation in such works.

French/Italian, rather.

2:51 PM

I'm not clicking any videos on my mobile, sorry.

Don’t worry. They won’t scandalize its socks off.
Unless it speaks Latin.

I played in Carmina Burana back in the day, btw. I love the flute solo in the Dance. So simple and joyful.

It does...
Nice.
I'm sitting in the coolest room of the house, where my great-great-grandfather used to sit, probably.

2:57 PM
Do I see Aafje Heynis there?
I guess not.

@tchrist I found that exchange very interesting and thought-provoking.

David Bedford. That's a complete live performance of The Odyssey.

@corn Which one? Not the Stack one?

We've talked about him before.

@cornbreadninja Well, that’s what it said. I fixed it though.
@Rob I think you were right that he misread the question.
@tchrist: Rubbish. In your examples, you need at least one initial instance of "had" that can be assumed to have been "deleted" before the later verb forms. Otherwise you'd end up with "I already sung before they shot me", which I suggest is indeed "technically incorrect" even if not everyone recognises it as particularly bad. But no-one endorses "I taken my sleeping tablet before I went to bed" - OP confuses the issue by citing a verb that people are often unsure about. — FumbleFingers 42 mins ago

@Robusto I've sung the Habanera.

Q: Is $z/z$ holomorphic in $z=0$?

MichaelTo be holomorphic require to have derivative at $z\to0$ but $f(z)$ is undefined. Does it mean $z/z$ is not holomorphic at $z=0$?

No purdy mathy bits in chat.

“Hava Nagila” () (lit. Let us rejoice) is a Hebrew folk song that has become a staple of band performers at Jewish weddings and Bar/Bat Mitzvahs. History The melody was taken from a Ukrainian folk dance-song from Bukovina (a variant of Hora). It uses the Phrygian dominant scale, common in music of Romania and Western Ukraine. The commonly used text was probably composed by Abraham Zevi (Zvi) Idelsohn in 1918 to celebrate the British victory in Palestine during World War I as well as the Balfour Declaration. go-ash?

No, like "gwash" ...

Actually, either way. But smart people use the first pronunciation. The rest don't even know the word.

@Robusto Au contraire: Smart people use IPA.

The Google Translate robot made the second noise.

3:17 PM
Au contrariment: Smart people drink IPA.

Actually it was kind of like goo-ATCH.

And we all know how good synthesized voices are at pronunciation.

ǁ gouache /guːˈɑːʃ/, /gwaʃ/.

Etymology: Fr., ad. Ital. guazzo.

A method of painting with opaque colours ground in water, and mixed with gum and honey so as to form a sort of paste. Also, a painting executed in this way, and the pigment itself.

1882 Artist 12 Feb. 53/2 ― The next step was the exact reproduction of gouache, or water body colour.
1892 Nation 13 Oct. 279/2 ― The title is decorated with allegorical designs painted in gouache.

@Robusto You're both wrong. Smart people speak IPA over the radio.

Voilà. Por favor.

howdy @MattЭллен
I started writing my blag post last night. 0_0

Excellent!
I've spent today entertaining my parents. They've gone now

@MattЭллен Couldn't hold their attention, eh? ;)

@cornbreadninja no, sadly they got bored and left. something about dinner or some such
I didn't think parents needed food

@MattЭллен that was a lie; they sustain themselves on our failings!

Phew! Mine will never run out of food :D

4:48 PM
On an only slightly lighter note, I think my blag post is too academic compared to existing posts, or is that forgivable? The issue of course being that I am under-qualified to bloviate academically about typography.

It's fine. I think the blog could do with a wide range of styles
plus you've got time to work it into something you prefer too, if you don't like the first draft

k.
@tchrist The blog header looks different from that of main and meta. Is it just bold?
It's more tightly kerned.

Hello English people.

Time to break fast!
howdy @Cerberus!

We're playing croquet very Englishly.

4:53 PM
@cornbreadninja yes, it is more squat and the border is closer in

@Cerberus Brilliant!

@Cerberus good show old sport!

@Cerberus tea and scones?

Is there a good English word for the typical seating area in a circus or stadium?
Beer and crisps, alas.

the stands?
(ironically)

4:55 PM
Flag Question is grayed out for me for custom flag. :(

Stands? What does that mean exactly in this context?

@Cerberus > 4a large raised tiered structure for spectators, typically at a sporting venue: United’s manager watched from the stands

Ah! That actually sounds good.

glad to be of service my liege

How come I don't often hear this word? Perhaps because I never watch sports...
Would you say it is common?

4:58 PM
that probably has a lot to do with it
@Cerberus it is the word for it, I can't think of another. Other than seating. Yes, I would say it is a common word in sports
when I did my sponsored cycle we set of from the west stand of the rugby club.

Ok thanks!! So each ehm structure is a stand?

yes. Plurality is somewhat odd in that you might get away with saying "they're sitting in the stands" if there is only one stand. I'm not 100% on that.
What would you call it in Dutch?

Tribune.

:D Google translate gives me stand!

You could say they're sitting on the tribune even if there are several structures, and mean the collective; or you could say there are several tribunes.
Good!
I'm in the country on my phone.

5:11 PM
Congrats. You seem to have good reception

On the not-really-a-stand, watching the croquet.

you're not playing croquet?

Yes, Vodafone has three bars H, T-Mobile only 1G. No I'm not playing, it's extremely hot and they're mainly playing in the sun.
What you're doing?

it's quite hot here too. you need to keep your complexion pale, else people will think you a common worker, eh?
@Cerberus well, I'm deciding about going to a gig. I also want to write some blogs
so, just sitting really

Hello everyone.

5:20 PM
What kind of gig? If you can handle the heat, go!
Hello western hemisphere.

@Cerberus Reel Big Fish are playing. I haven't seen them in years.

Oh, @Cerb, I have a question for you!

5:32 PM
Ask away!
RBF sounds familiar.
I may have listened to them in the past.

Is that thing that you have that converts imperial to metric an addon/extension/plugin?
Or is it AHK?

By the way, there is this very English game where you throw balls, like jeu de boules: what is it called again? Balls? @mahn I use a greasemoney script, and it only does temperatures; for the rest I search Google for '3 inch in cm'.
'4 USD in cad', etc. etc.

I totally know that game, but I can't think of the name right now.
Bocce ball?
Hm, maybe not.
According to Wikipedia, it's bocce in Italy.

@Cerberus bowls
anyway, I'm go to the gig. CYA!

good afternooooooon!

5:46 PM
Hello @Mr.ShinyandNew安宇.

how are things

I'm alright. I have to look after my siblings today while my parents go out and taste wine.
How are you?

not bad. painted some trim. now I'm procrastinating by doing a writers.se exercise. except I'm procrastinating that by reading programmeryangosling.tumblr.com

Hahaha, I love that site.

@Matt Thanks! Have fun!

5:58 PM
so @Cerb, you've had the GN for a while now, what are your thoughts?

I love it! The battery sucks, of course, but that's what I expected. You?
It's 8 pm and I will soon need to charge again.

my battery life is pretty good. Better than my old phone, I suspect

I don't think any phone with a comparable screen and weight will do better.

but I am usually at home where I have wifi on
and a cell signal
so it doesn't spend lots of time scanning
I think the GSIII is probably better. It has 2x ram and 2x cpu
at least, the one in Europe does
stupid US/CA version is dual-core
and now that my old Nexus S is unused, i've been flashing the hell out of it
it's perfect for testing software
I discovered that if you have a QR scanner installed, you can scan a QR code for a WIFI network and the phone prompts you to join
no need to enter a passphrase

I'm not sure more cores help a lot outside games? Do you ever see any lagging?

6:04 PM
now if only the QR reader was built-in...

Yes, you are using this special QR Wi-Fi application? I have heard of it.

Load time is sometimes an issue. Granted, you don't notice it until you get a faster phone and then you're surprised that you used to wait so long for stuff to happen
No... well, sorta. There was a QR generator for generating the wifi QR codes. But on stock android phones all I needed was "Barcode Scanner" by zxynga (or whatever)

Does a cpu like this help for loading times?
Yes, that's what I meant.

more cores can help whenever the OS is multi-tasking. So if one core is loading your app, another can be doing something else, like memory management, while another can be doing background-sync, etc.
so if only the barcode scanner was built-in, I wouldn't need to set up the wi-fi to download it.

Still, I wouldn't expect all that to be very significant when loading a game, but who knows.

6:08 PM
well, when loading Angry Birds, the Galaxy S II was much faster than the Nexus S.
I should compare the GN to the Nexus S... I'd have to install some games first.
One thing that annoys me is that the home-screen icons are slightly smaller than on the Nexus S, which leaves more space around the outside, and more space between... but why didn't they just make the grid smaller, so that I could have more than 16 icons??????
Heck, on CyanogenMod I can change the grid size, and get 25 icons on the Nexus S and it looks fine. WTF goog?
Also I'm not happy with how the GN fits in my pocket. I hope phones don't get any bigger than this.

Oh, I should join the others. We'll talk about this more some other time; in any case, I was rather thinking of 2 cores v. 4: the step from 1 to 2 I would expect to be huge.

@Cerberus for the OVER 9000th time, I do.

You're so easy.

Ey naugh, reyed.

@Mrs I don't have a real problem with my pockets, except that it feels a bit right while cycling.

Okay, now I have,to go. Later!

CU
I'm off as well. Lators.

welp. I've reached the end (or beginning, depending on your point of view) of programmerryangosling. time to get some other stuff done

It wasn't my intention to sound harsh.
It was, however, my intention to label nonsense as nonsense.

9:31 PM
I usually don't flag too many things myself, since I believe people should be given more room to express themselves.

user19161
I usually dislike people who flag too much though, because I consider them as overly intolerant.

user19161
@RegDwightАΑA However, there is no reason there really. It is just an unconstructive expression of disagreement.

@Robusto Politics rules.
@JasperLoy you don't know jokes. Not personally, not from hearsay.
Oh, sorry. QED.

Just because you don't know a joke doesn't mean you can't be one.

user19161
@Robusto OK OK. You win.

9:46 PM
When I grow up I want to be a politics. Also, a joke. I know I can be both.

The political term comes from the practice, in Congressional hearings and investigations when a witness completely screws himself on the stand, of senators and representatives on the committee having to put their own opprobrium in the record, often at great length — grandstanding for the cameras, hoping theirs is the indignant outrage that drives a stake through the (now dead) poor idiot's heart. Or nether regions.

Well yeah. That's what politicians do best. In fact, that's their whole job.
