3:00 PM
Chinese New Year is next Mon. I guess there will be fireworks AGAIN.

woohoo!

user19161
I am starting to like Mrs Hiny's style of capping.

What is up with this morning thing happening again?

user19161
@aediaλ What thing?

Morning.
The light in the sky.

user19161
3:02 PM
@MattЭллен I think there were 15 min of fireworks on New Year. It made the sky smoky.

@aediaλ At least you have a sky. We have snow.

@aedia - I don't know, but there is some sort of cyclical behaviour. I'm sure we can condition a different response

I had just settled down for a long winter's nap when BAM it's doing that thing again!

@MetaEd are you going to sue, or enter it in the Turner prize?

user19161
3:03 PM
@MetaEd Very scary.

@Robusto Aww. We have a bit of rain, which hasn't turned into snain or sleet or snail or slush or any of those other varieties at the moment, so of course it delayed the public transit anyway.

Aw, y'all are nice. It's a very poor effort.

user19161

Hi, can just anyone confirm my opinion on the following sentence: "Rule definitions are written in a similar way as <something>"? I think it is incorrect and the sentence should be: "... in a similar way TO <something>".

I would use to there, yes. I would not use as

3:15 PM
I would write "in a similar way." (full stop)

but then you're not comparing it to anything, @MetaEd

For comparison: "Rule definitions are written similarly to ____".

@MattЭллен Thanks!

Or "Rule definitions are similar to ____".

in a similar way to is idiomatic, @MetaEd

3:17 PM
Screw similar. Just use like. "Rule definitions are written like <something>."

I assume I'm just not familiar with that idiom, Matt. It seems very awkward to me.

maybe it's a Britishism

And if the sentence would be like this: "Rule definitions are written in a similar MANNER as <something>" -- is it correct or not?

Then use to.

yeah
I always pair similar with to

3:18 PM
But it's a poor construction to start with. I'd say it's a do-over.

@Robusto concur

depends on if it's a simile or an example
for a simile it seems fine to me

@MattЭллен "yeah" is the answer for my second question (with manner word)?

@MartyIX no, I was agreeing with Robusto

@MattЭллен I will stick to your rule of using similar + to. It makes sense

3:22 PM
@MattЭллен I do when we're talking nouns: "my coffee is similar to mud", but I am not sure I use in a similar way to. I think I would probably use something else, like much like ("a unicorn runs much like a pony") or rephrase.

@aediaλ I would say "That man runs in a similar way to a donkey" and not think I was wrong

@MattЭллен I think I would accept your utterance but not utter it myself :P

:D good good. I just have to remember what a friend told me one day: "You don't think like other people"

@MattЭллен that's probably good to keep in mind.

3:28 PM
@aediaλ concur "much like"

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 On an unrelated note, a couple were fined 2k each for walking naked in public.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 well, there's not much point thinking like someone else. You'll never have a thought that's your own.

user19161
@MattЭллен Good thinking!

But seriously, folks, whenever you find yourself writing something that sounds awkward, just recast the sentence. There are many different ways to say the same thing. You don't have to be stuck with awkward constructions.

user19161
@aediaλ Very diplomatic!

3:30 PM
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Oh goodness.

user19161
@Mahnax Boo! I saw your comment.

@WillHunting Ah, good.

user19161
@Mahnax But how do you know you can't delete immediately?

@WillHunting Personal experience.
And I frequent MSO.

user19161
@Mahnax Then maybe things have changed or I recalled wrongly.

3:33 PM
@WillHunting Things do change all the time, so I would guess that it's that one.

user19161
@Mahnax Very philosophical!

@WillHunting Meh.

@MattЭллен Yeah, but some people, including many "computer" people, are often surprised when they realize just how abnormal their thoughts are compared to "normal" people.

Q: Use of capitals and full stops in bullet points

Ryan MurphyLet's say I have a bullet point list e.g: Point 1. Point 2. Point 3. Notice I have put a capital letter for the starting letter of every bullet point and a full stop at the end. Is this the correct way to do it? If not, what is the correct way to do it? Do I put a capital letter and no fu...

Dupe of two other questions
And if you search for "bullet list", seriously, like, the first closed question is also closed as dupe of those same questions

user19161
@aediaλ I prefer to close the older two as a duplicate of this one actually since it covers both capitalization and periods.

user19161
3:37 PM
And I also like Lynn's answer best.

@WillHunting So does every single style guide on the planet.
@WillHunting It could be merged somewhere if this gets closed.

user19161
@aediaλ I have just done the deed: closevoted the two older ones.

user19161
Sorry for being weird!

@WillHunting a little too late for that, innit? :)

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Hehe. But seriously, not only is the new question the best, the new answer is too IMAO.

Q: What is your associations with the word "Lepshy"?

Voloda2What is your associations with the word "Lepshy"? Do you have any associations?

user19161
@Mahnax What does it mean?

oh. wow.
NARQ

@WillHunting It doesn't!
The swift hand of Mahnax hath voteth.

user19161
@Mahnax You should answer nothing instead. Minus one.

@WillHunting Heh.

user19161
3:45 PM
@Mahnax I closevoted and downvoted.

I wonder how he knew of my associations with Lepshy. Damn these Internetz! Nothing is secure.

@WillHunting As did I, then I answered.

user19161
Closed with minus 5. Wow!

BOOM!

user19161
From BOO to BOOM.

3:47 PM
My answer is very short. I think I'll delete it.

user19161
@Mahnax You should before you get flamed.

@WillHunting I did.

user19161
@Mahnax Good good.

Yep.

user19161
@Mahnax What made you answer just now? Did you take too much coffee?

3:51 PM
@WillHunting Silliness.
One week until I have Fanatic.

user19161
@Mahnax I might have done that if I took too much coffee.

@WillHunting Heh, 'took'.

user19161
@Mahnax I award you the silliness badge.

@WillHunting Is it Gold?

user19161
@Mahnax How was yesterday's paper?

user19161
3:54 PM
@Mahnax Platinum.

@WillHunting Yay!
@WillHunting Test, you mean?

user19161
@Mahnax Yeah, certainly not toilet paper.

@WillHunting Not too good.

Hi!

Hey @Cerb!

user19161
3:55 PM
@Mahnax What was it? Questions were hard?

user19161
@Cerberus Boo!

@WillHunting Yeah, and there was some trickery about.

My slipstreamed XP is not a success. It is very naughty.

user19161
@Mahnax What was the test on?

Q: How to say that food is hot (temperature) without the listener thinking that I mean "spicy"?

Rice Flour CookiesThere is an excellent discussion of spicy vs. hot here: Difference between "spicy" and "hot" However, having read the previous question, I did not see any answer that tells how to say anambiguously that food is hot (temperature) without being misunderstood. If I say that my ...

user19161
3:56 PM
@Cerberus Time to get Linux.

Just what the world wants to know.

I'm on my laptop now, I have to reinstall from another cd.
@WillHunting Nah, I want to be able to use all my programs.

user19161
@Cerberus You will need about an hour, and another hour if you apply all updates.

If it ever comes up, I use "hot hot" to mean temperature and "spicy hot" to mean the other.

But I don't want to!

3:57 PM
@WillHunting Biology.

I need Windows, and I'm used to it.

user19161
@Mahnax I thought you only take general science?

@Cerberus heheh "need"

user19161
@Cerberus One day someone will make Doors.

@WillHunting I do, but it was a sub-section.

3:58 PM
kicks some objects lying around the room
@MrShinyandNew安宇 I do!

Why, Cerb?

user19161
@Cerberus No, Windows needs you!

My stuff doesn't work on other systems.

user19161
@Cerberus Can you tell us what kind of stuff? We might find a Linux replacement for you.

I need a good mouse gesture program. I need Autohotkey.

4:00 PM
Be back soon, bai.

I need tons of other stuff.
Bai!
Like this version of the OED I have.
Like Golden Dictionary.

@Cerberus — You are one needy little doggy.

Etc. etc.
@Robusto whines softly

user19161
@Cerberus Ah I know nothing about these.

@Cerberus Quit your whining. Those gates of Hades ain't gonna guard themselves.

4:01 PM
@WillHunting Well, see? If you're not a demanding user, Mac or Linus will do fine.

user19161
@Cerberus Just use other dictionaries then, online or paper.

@Cerb: There are probably linux equivalents. Some will require reconfiguring or retraining on your part. That probably won't be acceptable to you, I guess.

@WillHunting Come on.

user19161
@Cerberus Well, I don't call that demanding user. Maybe weird user.

OED might work in Wine.

4:02 PM
@MrShinyandNew安宇 It would not; and there are no equivalents at all for many of my programs.

@Cerberus well, I don't know about THAT.

@Cerberus — Your grasp of programming is definitive proof that a little learning is a dangerous thing.

I'm sure you could get used to a linux system.
And considering how much you hate re-installing, I'd suggest going with a distribution that has a long-term support version, such as Ubuntu LTS.

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Yay! Or Debian Stable.

(I don't use Ubuntu myself, but I too loathe the idea of having to relearn everything)
@WillHunting no, I don't recommend Debian.
Debian is like all the BAD parts of Ubuntu, without any of the advantages.
At least Ubuntu LTS will be current when it's released, unlike Debian Stable, which is never current, ever.

4:05 PM
Or Sugar on a Stick.

user19161
Anyway, stats now show that Debian is currently the most popular web server.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 I'm quite sure there is none for Autohotkey, for example.
@Robusto Oracle.

I like Linux in theory, and I encourage it. But it's just not practical for most people at the moment.

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 That is true.

4:07 PM

Now it all makes sense.

@Cerberus Someone who uses a program like autohotkey could probably be very comfortable using linux.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 If it were just the getting used to a new interface after fifteen years on Windows, I might consider it.

Anyway, this link discusses some alternatives for autohotkey, I'm sure none of them will be a drop-in replacement. But to some degree you'll have to change your way of thinking about the problem, because Windows and Linux are different, and some Windows things you'd need autohotkey for are already native in Linux.,

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Yeah I don't even know what autohotkey is.

4:10 PM
@Cerberus For one thing, there are window managers that are designed for people who use keyboard shortcuts for everything.

If even a single of my important programs doesn't work on Linux, it's not worth it. Consider, for example, my university's VPN program.

@Cerberus I bet they have a linux version

user19161
I thought @mrs will recommend @cerb Fedora.

@WillHunting no, he doesn't like installing updates. he needs LTS.

Yeah I vote Ubuntu LTS
Not that I really get a vote

user19161
4:11 PM
@aediaλ Yeah 12.04 comes with 5 years support.

Actually I don't really recommend Linux usually. People will either intrinsically want it, or won't be mentally equipped to deal with it.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Could be, but they might not. Or the Bibliotheca Teubneriana Latina might not. I need all of those. I'd have to make a very long list of such programs.

user19161
Of course you may need Firefox PPA to keep that recent.

But I think Cerb could like it. However, he's a little too curmudgeonly about his XP

user19161
I tried Ubuntu 11.10 and Fedora 16. I have to say that the latter shuts down twice as fast for unknown reasons.

4:13 PM
@Cerberus you don't need to make such a list on my account. For one thing, I bet most of your programs would work in a VM. You don't need multiple VMs, just one VM that hosts all your legacy stuff. The way to switch, in your case, would be to install Linux, then get things working one at a time. It may take some work.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 I'm a little nervous now about the judgments you might make about my mental state if you ever saw my Ubuntu/Fedora/Mac/Vista/7 household.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 I don't think any of those programs are at all equivalent: AHK is not about hotkeys any more: it's about a very simple yet powerful programming language that can do nearly anything.

user19161
And even though my hardware is pretty good, Unity shell still freezes.

@Cerberus well, that's my point: Linux already comes with DOZENS of perfectly good simple yet powerful programming languages that can do nearly anything.

I host with Ubuntu LTS. However I do need to upgrade to the latest LTS. I hate to upgrade.

4:15 PM
Writing a tiny script and having it do something on press of a keystroke is really, really easy. I do it all the time.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Yes, I could get them to work in a VM; but then they can't interact with my main system. The solution would be to install EVERYTHING in the VM and always work from there, but then...

And that Bibliotecha thingy... I bet it works perfectly under Wine.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 You have no idea how ignorant I am. When I mean simple, it is really simple.

@Cerberus No, not everything needs to be in a VM. And not every program needs to interact with other programs.

user19161
Just have some Cheese to go along with the Wine.

4:16 PM
> Click 200, 500

@Cerberus I'm sure you can handle it

user19161
@Cerberus But you do programming, I don't.

> Run, c:\firefox.exe

Don't joke about Cheese. You might bring on the apocalypse. You risk Edamnation.

There's a linux program called cheese.

4:17 PM
@MrShinyandNew安宇 I don't think so. I can't write a single line in Javascript, HTML, or anything.

I try to write everything as a single line in Perl.

@Cerberus but you learned autohotkey...

@MetaEd It's Gouda that you're pointing this out.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Because it is extremely simple, as above.
I have never heard of anything that comes close.

4:18 PM
@Robusto I try to Brie helpful.

I Camembert you ever being any other way.

I would have cheese.

@Robusto Muenster keep making bad smelling puns?

@Cerberus what does that script do? click a certain part of the screen?

@MetaEd — You don't know jack.

user19161
4:20 PM
The Wine has made you Barrie high or Purdy high.

@Cerberus — How could you, a denizen of Cheeseland, not have any?

@MrShinyandNew安宇 I have scripts for lots of things. Click certain controls in certain windows. Create a GUI that allows me to search the internet in various ways, and search in programs on my computer too, like the OED. Display the names of modifier keys on screen as they are pushed down. Auto-replace text. Etc. etc.

@Robusto Now, now. No fighting, boys. Swiss and make up.

@Robusto I'm afraid I only have Italian cheese at the moment.

user19161
@Cerberus I now know what you do with six eyes.

4:22 PM
@aediaλ — Real men don't Swiss when they walk.

@Robusto I knew Jack. Jack was a friend of mine. Robusto, you're no Bishop Kennedy.

@WillHunting stares

@MetaEd — But am I a Bishop Berkeley?

user19161
I only know the Jack that fell off the Beanstalk.

@Robusto Bleu me.

4:23 PM
@Cerberus — Then you must provolone.

user19161
@aedia Congrats on 5k!

Did someone Havarti in here?

Oh, I also have a script that automatically corrects the spelling of a red-underlined word in FF and Word if I hover my mouse over it and double-press left alt. Left control corrects the upper-left red-underlined word automatically.

@Robusto Or at least offer a Handkäse.

user19161
@MetaEd That doesn't sound right.

4:24 PM
@MetaEd — Bleu you? If you think so, you're a sap, sago.

@Cerberus Most of those things can be done in Linux using the typical tools that ship with it. I don't know HOW, because I've never tried. You might need to do a bit of coding in something like python or scheme or tcl. Some of those things will be built-in features.

Who would have predicted this would have hapaneer.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 A bit of coding, like it's nothing! And what am I supposed to do with the scripts I probably spent a hundred hours to write?

As Othello said to his lieutenant: "You're an asiago!"
But anyway, no parm done.

@Cerberus Well, clearly you've invested a lot of time writing code in a dead-end, locked in language on an obsolete platform. Microsoft's solution for you, if autohotkey doesn't work in windows 7, is to simply run everything in a VM forever.

4:27 PM
And this is just about a single program; for certain paid programs I only have a single version and can't get any others, like the Kramers Talen-CD-ROM.

@Cerberus Also, porting software is often a completely different challenge to writing it in the first place.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 How did you get there from Othello?

@MrShinyandNew安宇 I know. But AHK works reasonably well in 7.

@Robusto whoops, wrong reply link

@MrShinyandNew安宇 — Not saying you're wrong. Just wondered how you sussed me out from that remark. ^_^

4:28 PM
@Cerberus How old is it? if it's really old, it might work in Wine. How much does this program need to interface with other programs? If only a little, run it in your legacy VM.

@WillHunting Muchas gruyeres!

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Everything I do needs to interface with AHK and my mouse-gesture program. I can't have separate environments. I make a gesture, the gesture activates AHK, which in turn loads the dictionary and searches it, for example.

@Cerberus Hm. Well, are any of those programs you rely on 16-bit? Because if so they won't work on Windows 64-bit.

Nope.

user19161
@MrShinyandNew安宇 I take that as a joke.

4:34 PM
And AHK and those mouse-gesture programs work in 7, though not perfectly. For example, it is impossible to have them autoload on boot because of the silly UAC.
Or DEP.

@WillHunting what? why would that be a joke? We're talking about someone who's running an 11-year old OS. He could easily be running 20-year old software.

I don't know. People say it is impossible.

Sorry, work intervened. I Caciotta that.

You know, when you were saying yesterday "it's not my fault microsoft made an insecure OS", it's a bit ironic that you disparage DEP and UAC, which are two features that make the OS secure.

@Cerberus I bet you could still put them in the startup folder, though, so they'd load when you login

4:36 PM
Jan 13 at 20:33, by Kitḫ
haz u tryd jQry?

And if autohotkey doesn't work because of UAC then it's probably broken. I.E morally broken. kill it before it kills you!

user19161
With the spicy and hot question, I am thinking, is there really a difference between spicy hot and hot hot scientifically?

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Yes, I can see that. So sometimes security is impossible without inconvenience, in which case I choose convenience where reasonably possible.

user19161
Maybe spicy food is hot because it increases temperature somewhere.

@WillHunting It doesn't increase temperature, no.

user19161
4:38 PM
Or maybe spicy hot and hot hot trigger the same biological responses.

that I don't know.
It's certainly a different feeling.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 No, the problem I mentioned is that Win 7 refuses to auto-load it and other programs. I need to manually start several scripts and programs on every boot—programs I use all the time. Could be because their drivers aren't signed or something.

@WillHunting spicy food feels hot because it is acidic

@WillHunting Is this what tomorrow is going to be like without Wikipedia?

Is capsaicin acidic?

4:39 PM
Piquance (pronounced or piquancy) is a sensation associated with the sense of taste. In various Asian countries it has traditionally been considered a basic taste. Etymology The English word piquant comes from the Old French present participle of the verb piquer, meaning to prick; it is cognate with the Spanish and Portuguese word picante, which carries the same meaning, and also with the English word pique. Common synonyms for piquance include hotness, pungence, raciness, spiciness, or the condition of something being spicy hot. Piquant vs. "hot" and/or "spicy" Use of the word "piqua...

@MetaEd yes, probably formic acid, like an ant sting

user19161
@aediaλ Hehe.

@aediaλ If I talk gibberish tomorrow, it's not my fault.

user19161
The hottest food I have eaten is at an Indian restaurant. I accidentally swallowed some chilli and it was unbearably hot for a day no matter what I did.

Capsaicin is not formic acid.

4:41 PM
@Cerberus Most programs don't use "drivers". And starting programs on boot is easy in Windows 7, just put them in the startup folder. Or write a batch file or powershell script that starts them all.

Capsaicin is, however, piquant.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 I put them in the startup folder, doesn't work. I don't know why. People say it can't be solved.

tl:dr; in today's news, thermoception and chemesthesis not the same after all

@MetaEd no, ok.

4:45 PM
@MetaEd I think it's caustic.

Anyway, based on my understanding of autohotkey, I think it's just badly designed for windows 7. There's no reason it can't do what it does properly without unnecessary UAC.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 OK, thanks, so there seems to be a solution to the startup problem.
Maybe it was some other problem that couldn't be solved.

Umm, can you boys go talk about Autohotkey in Superuser chat?
We have to talk about spicy vs. hot in ELU chat.

I say AHK is spicy hot

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Why is there no reason? What if it needs to disable and reenable certain services, silently execute things, etc?

4:49 PM
but mouse gestures are hot hot

@Robusto You could write Greasemonkey script to block my every line!

@MattЭллен but do they stimulate the trigeminal nerve?

@Cerberus Then it needs to be designed in such a way as to allow certain things without invoking UAC. Or else it should simply not allow certain things because doing so is a security vulnerability.

user19161
It's interesting how hot and cool refer to temperatures and people.

@Cerberus — If you need to silently execute things, perhaps you should be discussing this on games chat?

4:50 PM
@MattЭллен Thanks!

@Cerberus — But I don't need to block every line of yours. Just the stupid, boring ones. At least four or five a day don't qualify for that.

@Robusto According to this it's an irritant but not actually caustic (corrosive to tissue).

I mean, virus scanners need to examine every file, and lots of other things. They don't require any gymnastics for the user on startup. How did they manage to make their software work in Vista/7? Why can't the AHK people achieve the same level of usability?

@MetaEd — I consider that a caustic remark.

Arg! I can't move my cursor! Perhaps my laptop's pad thing broke.

4:52 PM
If you need to silently execute things, use a silencer.

Oh! It works again.

user19161
@Cerberus Use a mouse then.

@MetaEd — You misspelled suppressor.

@MetaEd Or use a knife.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 I don't want to be restricted in what I can do because of security.

4:53 PM
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Good Point.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 — But then you can't say you didn't know it was loaded.

@Cerberus Well, it's your computer... why don't you just turn off UAC then?

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Because they're just one guy in a basement doing it for free.

@Robusto Picky, picky, picky.

@Cerberus That's no excuse for poor coding.

4:54 PM
That's why AHK doesn't have any interest in scaring your pants off about viruses.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 — Unless you mean poor in the sense of "not rich."

What is the AHK guy going to do when nobody has XP anymore? just stick his fingers in his ears and say "la-la-la, nobody uses UAC, la-la-la, I can't hear you"?

@MrShinyandNew安宇 It is: if you don't have a team of people and money and expert knowledge, you just can't do everything other people can.

@aediaλ You know it's high time my trigeminal nerve got some stimulation. dreams of vegetable curry

@MrShinyandNew安宇 The AHK guy has probably already moved on. @Cerberus should too.

4:55 PM
He has not.
Many people use XP.

It's your other head?

So, you're saying AHK can't be high quality software then, because writing code is too hard for one guy in a basement, and 4 years isn't long enough to fix a major security/usability bug

@Cerberus — You are carrying a torch for this AHK dude. I say it's time you realized he's just not that into you.

Frankly I don't understand how so many people apparently switch to 7 without losing programs etc. they need.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Yes.
Though I think the bug is Microsoft's.

@Cerberus The point is, you don't need those programs. You're using shitty programs as a crutch. Grow up!

4:57 PM
@Robusto He is: I gave him money.

@Cerberus Has the check already cleared?

@Cerberus nope, it's definitely not Microsoft's bug. There are obviously ways to make it work. There are lots of ways. It's AHK's bug.

@Robusto I can do certain things more efficiently than you can because I use those programs.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 The whole UAC thing is a mistake, if you ask me.

@Cerberus except upgrade your computer

@Cerberus — What makes you think I want to download porn more efficiently? Because that's what this is about, isn't it? 'Fess up!

@Robusto I don't think, I know.
It is just like people who actually type passwords every time they log into their sites.
I can't understand for the life of me why.

@Cerberus No, UAC is actually a major improvement. It allows almost all old software to function, and that's a big deal because there's TONS of crappy software out there. And now that old software works, AND the user can be protected from other crappy software that infects their system. You can argue that Microsoft shouldn't have allowed the situation to develop in the first place, but that's a pointless argument.
