6:00 PM
@KitΘδς So while there is no "choice" involved, you could still have a situation where the mimics eventually outnumber the harmful originators. But I'd guess that a system like that wouldn't be in equilibrium and thus the mimicry would stop being effective. It's a feedback system, for the mimic, originator, and predators.

That's the other bit. You feel like you might get stuck in there.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 There is still a cost to it.

@z7sgѪ A cost, to mimicry?

@aediaλ Damn I will have to look at that at home.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 That's more or less what I was trying to express, but in as unclear and condescending a manner as possible.

6:05 PM
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Well a risk at least, it's sort of like playing a bluff.

@KitΘδς I guess it's hard to follow these conversations sometimes from the transcript.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 I do hope that noöne takes me too seriously. Sometimes I forget to use my tags.

@z7sgѪ It's from the episode The Royale, which only reinforced my feeling that revolving doors are out to get us.

It's hard to mimic and camouflage at the same time, though not impossible I suppose.

@z7sgѪ I'm not sure I agree. If aliens flew down to earth and started zapping people, but didn't zap bald guys because their shiny pates reflected the lasers back to the aliens, destroying them, soon everyone would be bald.
Sure, it's a bluff, but it doesn't raise the stakes.

6:08 PM
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Sure it does, take a yellow-black caterpillar. It will definitely be more likely to be seen by a predator than a green one.
If the predator figures out it's not really poisonous then it's screwed.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 In your example, it doesn't matter if you're bald naturally or fake-ly, it still works to reflect the lasers. That's not like some of the mimicry in nature, where it's a total bluff.

@z7sgѪ well, it's a different strategy than camouflage, that's true. But with camouflage, if you can be seen you're toast too.
@aediaλ No, people who shave their heads don't get that same smooth shiny finish

Your example doesn't involve any mimicry.

@z7sgѪ It does. Non bald people start mimicking bald people so that they don't get zapped.
zapping bald people is bad for alien lasers, so the aliens can't zap non bald people
er, can't zap bald people
So with yellow and black caterpillars, they are more visible, but as long as all the predators nearby know not to eat them, they won't be eaten.
And because this isn't a choice, it isn't really a bluff like in poker. the only reason that they are yellow and black is BECAUSE being more visible, but confused with unpalatable prey, means they reproduce more.

The predators learn that they are edible, then the colouring becomes a disadvantage. Once the predators call the bluff, they will lose, and the green caterpillars will proliferate.
In the natural world of course there is a balance reached between different strategies of course. Personally I have had more problems with the darn green caterpillars than any other, I wish they were all brightly coloured!

6:19 PM
What is this even... what?
Feb 7 at 15:07, by Kosmonaut
Oops, am I walking in on a psychiatry session?

If everyone carries a brightly colored coffee mug to disguise how they really drink tea, how long until the aliens zap all of us for being bald caterpillars?

@z7sgѪ If the predators can learn, quickly, that the brightly coloured caterpillars are edible, then yes, it would be a disadvantage. But that suggests that the inedible ones are all gone, or vastly outnumbered.

@z7sgѪ That's assuming that the poisonous yellow caterpillars have ceased to be, or otherwise have ceased to become a risk, wouldn't it?

@GraceNote Only assuming that the edible caterpillars are mimicking the inedible ones, and not the other way around.
@RegDwightѬſ道 Thanks. I had almost forgotten that I had that in my head earlier.

6:25 PM
@GraceNote I think in practice the predator has learned to differentiate between the mimic and the true poisoner. Another mechanism at work as Mr. Shiny mentioned earlier is that the mimic devalues the warning marks of the poisoner, so there is incentive for the poisoner to differentiate themselves too.

I figured the bigger disincentive for the poisonous one was less the color, more the whole, y'know, being poisonous thing.

@aediaλ Zap tea drinkers!!!

What are we talking about?

Zapping bald people.

@z7sgѪ We're talking about batesian mimicry, where the edible species mimics the inedible one.

6:27 PM
@Reg .....

@GraceNote They need the marker otherwise how do you even know they're poisonous?!

@z7sgѪ Ahem. ::Looks at fresh mug of tea::

@ChaosGamerΕΛΥēelū No, he's right.

Ok, very random

@z7sgѪ Congratulations! That was the only conceivable response.

6:28 PM
@z7sgѪ Probably the same way they learned in the first place long ago to associate the color with danger.

@ChaosGamerΕΛΥēelū It doesn't have to make sense. If it does make sense, @random comes in here and zaps the room.

Good-bye Osama bin Laden, 2001-2010. World's greatest Go hide-and-seek Champion....
I should have said that long time ago. Xd

@GraceNote I think the idea is that because the poisoner is poisonous, AND easily identified, animals learn to avoid eating them.

@ChaosGamerΕΛΥēelū ?

@Rhŵdri Perhaps just a 1.2 on the Schmidt scale. Enough to remind you that you really ought to try coffee as well.

6:29 PM
@KitΘδς That was pretty random, but not too random enough.
He's learning.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Aye, but even if they become more difficult to identify, they haven't exactly stopped being poisonous.

@Kit Osama is World's greatest Hide and Seek Person!

Aposematism (from apo- away, and sematic sign/meaning), perhaps most commonly known in the context of warning colouration, describes a family of antipredator adaptations where a warning signal is associated with the unprofitability of a prey item to potential predators. It is one form of "advertising" signal, with many others existing such as the bright colours of flowers which lure pollinators. The warning signal may take the form of conspicuous colours, sounds, odours or other perceivable characteristics. Aposematic signals are beneficial for both the predator and prey, who both avoid p...

@RegDwightѬſ道 I understand now, Dr. Chandra. Thank you for being honest with me.

@GraceNote Well, the poisoner is not supposed to be difficult to identify.

6:31 PM
@z7sgѪ The one on mimicry is a good summary as well.

Being poisonous only helps if someone knows not to eat you in the first place, otherwise you're both dead.

The poisoner should be unique. If the poisoner is harder to mimic, the signal will have more value.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Right. The poisoner says "Hey! Look at me! I'm poisonous!"

I hate butterflies.... shudders

@z7sgѪ Maybe, but that's not how it works.

6:32 PM
@z7sgѪ It only needs to be as unique as it needs to be. As long as there aren't so many mimics that the predators have lost their conditioning.

@KitΘδς NP. Also, don't blame me for that link. It could have been worse.

@RegDwightѬſ道 I'm not taking that bait, sensei.

So my coffee screams when I drink it. I think it's trying to warn the other coffee beans.

@KitΘδς A bait does not come with a warning.

" Batesian mimicry finds greatest success when the ratio of mimic to mimicked is low; otherwise predators learn to recognise the imposters."

6:33 PM
@MrShinyandNew安宇 And let's not forget that poisoners sometimes mimic each other too.
@RegDwightѬſ道 Oh, well, then I guess I can just...

@KitΘδς That is convergence rather than mimicry (see I learned from wiki!).

@KitΘδς Yes, that's a different classification of mimicry, and it helps all three species: the two co-mimics and the predator.

Why does a poisoner need to mimic?

@ChaosGamerΕΛΥēelū They don't need to, just sometimes they do.

6:34 PM
Hmm...

This will kill any sticky tune you might have in your head.

@RegDwightѬſ道 Nooooo!

@ChaosGamerΕΛΥēelū So Agatha Christie has got something to fill a couple hundred pages with.

Here is one :)

@KitΘδς If a predator thinks you have poisonous fangs AND poisonous claws, they might be twice as likely to avoid you, even if you only have poisonous claws, and it's a whole nother species with them fangs

6:34 PM
Now this tune in this one is soooo catchy.

@ChaosGamerΕΛΥēelū Nooooo!

@RegDwightѬſ道 Why did you do that?

@MrShinyandNew安宇 Exactly why the poisonous snakes have developed complex markings. The predator identifies mimics and the poisonous snakes that look most like the mimics are more likely to get eaten. Hence the poisonous snake markings will tend to diverge from the mimic markings.

You know, the one in few seconds foward.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 The real question is, why didn't I not do that?

6:35 PM
Fever, temperature is risin' now....

@RegDwightѬſ道 That tune is indeed a stick.

Jul 31 at 16:27, by RegDwight
@Cerberus You can say whatever you want about The Hoff, and God knows I have, but. He always manages to put a smile on my face. If that ain't worth something, then "worth" has no meaning.

@Kit sorry Kit. :)

Take that, you bastards!

@z7sgѪ If the predator identifies the mimic as food, and confuses the originator as a mimic, then the predators will either stop doing that, or the originators will change. That doesn't mean that it was a bad strategy in the first place..... the species we see are here because they were successful, not because they weren't.

*Lovely Is The Feelin' Now

@RegDwightѬſ道 I yield! I yield!
Sneak attack!

@KitΘδς Your loss.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 W. T. F?!

6:39 PM
Now everybody hold on, I have to catch up, and don't tell me you have not.

@MrShinyandNew安宇 lol. that's so terrible
I am! I am! I am the Ram!

@MrShinyandNew安宇 I don't know what you are arguing about. I was talking about the reasons why it's not a dominant strategy. Now I'm going home.

@z7sgѪ He missed that part.
@MrShinyandNew安宇 Plus interpretive dance.

@z7sgѪ There are no permanent dominant strategies in evolution.

@MAtt I think that "I am!" music is in here: Skip to 3:42.

6:45 PM
@ChaosGamerΕΛΥēelū Why not just link directly to 3:42. Lazy kids these days.

@Reg I don;t know how. Can you teach me?

@ChaosGamerΕΛΥēelū Look at my link, then.

I did.
I don;t know how...

Look at the URL.

6:47 PM
I just skip to the end, click share button, and past the URL here.

You don't know how to type "&t=3m42s"?

@RegDwightѬſ道 I don't have that on my link.

@ChaosGamerΕΛΥēelū that is listenable. This astrology song is sooooo bad

...Ohhhhhhhh
GOtta make mental note of that..

Hmm, but I do there.

6:48 PM
@ChaosGamerΕΛΥēelū Wow, you actually perform three actions, including clicking, instead of just one?
Why skip, click, and paste, if you can just paste...

@Reg see, I am nto lazy.

@ChaosGamerΕΛΥēelū There's a checkbox for "start at" a particular time, if you want it to generate the URL that way.

@RegDwightѬſ道 You can paste? I always just type the URL.

@ChaosGamerΕΛΥēelū how is doing more than necessary "lazy"?

Like this (I guess it doesn't always show the preview image when you generate the short URL with the "Share" button.)

6:50 PM
@Reg I said doing more than neceaary NOT lazy.
@aedia ...whats the point?

Oh, so the "nto" was intended to be a "not" rather than an "into"?.. I suppose that's why spelling matters.

@ChaosGamerΕΛΥēelū Example of 14 seconds into the toaster video.

Yeah, now let me watch the toaster video.

20 seconds watching sometihing...soo stupid..
wasting 20 seconds of your life... LOL

6:52 PM
Don't forget to watch all the related videos. Some are 21 seconds though. I want that second back.

C++ would watch again.
@ChaosGamerΕΛΥēelū You just wasted a few seconds of your life by typing "wasting 20 seconds of your life... LOL"

@Reg you do know that it took me 5 seconds.

That LOL alone... noöne is giving you that time back. Noöne!

For the love of Pete!
Those 20 second videos are really great.

Wait, them hez moar?

6:55 PM
Wiat, why do they call seconds, seconds? second mean also the... second, as in number two, ect... Shouldn;t it be synonumus to the smallest measure of time?

@ChaosGamerΕΛΥēelū Gen ref.

I...I...oh, my.

@reg Gen.. what?

6:56 PM

@ChaosGamerΕΛΥēelū That's a German soccer player.

Come on, @Chaos, if you're going to run with the pack you've got to keep up with the big dogs.

swooning at Robusto entering?

Dudes, ahhahaha-I was-ahahhah-joking-ahhahahahhahah........ coughs

@MattEllenД Thanks for the revival. Swooning at the sudden spike in blood pressure.

6:58 PM
@MattEllenД That's because @Robusto always enters the room suddenly and fast.

I didn't see a long string of vowel sounds...

Q: What's a word for saying 'entering a room suddenly and fast'?

pimvdbI'm looking for a word that means 'enter a room fast and suddenly'. Using a dictionary I got the word 'to plunge' - however I'm not sure if that's correct. When looking up 'to plunge' (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/plunge) it seems not to be completely correct, especially when lookin...

@KitΘδς I TOLD you that thing was tied too tightly, and that you'd regret taking it off

@MattEllenД LOL
@MrShinyandNew安宇 I should have listened. duly chastized

Wait, I have a question. Are you allowed to do.. you know, reviving a person using electric pads on a women? I know this question is stupid, but I am curious.

7:00 PM

@ChaosGamerΕΛΥēelū Defibrillate, and yes.
Provided that she needs it.

@KitΘδς The 20 Seconds Staring At Yoshi was particularly intriguing. Thank you. Will show wife.

ok.... sorry I asked...

@RegDwightѬſ道 — I'm just trying to catch you all with that goat. But you're too fast for me.

@ChaosGamerΕΛΥēelū Why are you sorry?

7:01 PM
Hmm... How about 20 seconds staring at Amy and Sonic "make out" ?

Feb 20 at 16:00, by RegDwight
The goat is right here.

Dude, why goat? Ram is better.

Feb 17 at 15:34, by RegDwight
The goat is right here! Being caressed as we speak!

@aediaλ "i find this video difficult to mastrubate to." That's the funniest comment ever.

RAm!
Why not RAM!
oh wait, use ROM instead.

7:02 PM
@KitΘδς good edit!

@ChaosGamerΕΛΥēelū I suppose you just lost everyone at "a women". This room is like that.

@RegDwightѬſ道 Subitocellintration. Sorry it took me so long to invent.

@KitΘδς Note how it merely says difficult.

yeah when we defibrillate women, we do them in groups

7:03 PM
@RegDwightѬſ道 Hence the enhanced comedic experience.

@ChaosGamerΕΛΥēelū If only I had a penny for every time you post either "@Reg ???" or "@Reg...". I can't really make heads or tails of that, sorry.

@KitΘδς The toaster had one about it being "defiantly" a toaster. That misspelling never fails to make me giggle.

Q: Why is "definitely" so frequently typoed?

badp"Definitely" seems to be one of the most frequently typoed words in written English on the internet -- enough to bring somebody to create d-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y.com. Simon Google says, in a completely unscientific manner: defini tely ×105,000,000 (43.4%) defina tely ×  80,000,000 (33.0%...

@ChaosGamerΕΛΥēelū You place one pad in the center of the chest along the sternum, and the other at heart level in the armpit area along the person's side to induce current across the heart in the correct direction. A woman's breasts would not get in the way.

@RegDwightѬſ道 — I definately can relate to that.

7:07 PM
@KitΘδς I also liked the related video of Yoshi boliing Spongebob.

It's not a stupid question because if the pads had to go anywhere in the breast area, the fatty tissue would make it more difficult to effectively defibrillate a woman or a fat person, for instance.

I never misspell definitely

@RegDwightѬſ道 But I think it was @aedia who shared, wasn't it?

Oh whatever, thanks all around. I'm nice like that.

Well, then, you're welcome.

7:08 PM
@kit fatty tissue.. snigger

@ChaosGamerΕΛΥēelū Why is that sniggerable?

waiit, is it sinnger, snigger, or sniger?

Should I have said adipose tissue instead?

@ChaosGamerΕΛΥēelū snigger
@ChaosGamerΕΛΥēelū OK, then yes it was a stupid question.

7:10 PM

@RegDwightѬſ道 I could stare at that for hours.

digital penny is given to Reg

@KitΘδς You misspelled "will".

7:11 PM
@RegDwightѬſ道 staring

@ChaosGamerΕΛΥēelū Thank you, but I prefer actual pennies or czechs.

Poop on your digital pennies.
Bitcoin is a digital currency created in 2009, based mainly on a self-published paper by Satoshi Nakamoto. Bitcoin enables payments (and micropayments) at a very low cost, and avoids the need for central authorities and issuers, with an average ten minute wait for confirmation. Digitally signed transactions, with one node signing over some amount of the currency to another node, are broadcast to all nodes in a peer-to-peer network. A proof-of-work system is used as a measurement against double-spending and as an initial currency distribution mechanism. Operation People interact with ...

@Robusto Now that's a steep learning curve.

@Robusto Immediately makes me think of "tuppence."

@RegDwightѬſ道 — But it gets easier.

7:12 PM
@Robusto I prefer Yandex Money.

Which reminds me of this question by Billaire.

@Reg will it satisfiy you to give me my debit card info so that you will get a real penny?

@ChaosGamerΕΛΥēelū Let's just settle for one trillion dollars in advance.

@RegDwightѬſ道 You're welcome! I wondered for a minute why you told Kit twice, but I figured you just really thought she might share your enthusiasm for Yoshi boiling Spongebob.

@reg how about onetrillion pennies?

7:15 PM
@ChaosGamerΕΛΥēelū I must czech the transcript, but I am fairly certain that we're well past that point already.

Why haz no 1 rite my codez?

Whats greater? Infinitive amount of penny or infinitive amout of dollar? Hey, I just made a paradox question! Must post it on Wikipedia...

@ChaosGamerΕΛΥēelū Infinite. Infinitive means something else.

@ChaosGamerΕΛΥēelū While you're there, check the definition of "paradox".

7:17 PM
@RegDwightѬſ道 Also a good idea.

@Reg I know the definition.

Awesome! Let me know when you use it.

@ChaosGamerΕΛΥēelū These two doctors just want to nickel and dime us! We'll never get an answer.

@aedia Don't take anyone with nickles!

@KitΘδς haz you posted your need for teh codez on SO?

7:18 PM
@Reg This sentence is false.

Or TDWTF?

@MattEllenД Why haz no 1 post my need 4 codez on SO?

A: Where did the term "OK/Okay" come from?

kitukwfyerIn my history class last year, I was told that it originated from US President Martin van Buren's campaign slogan, "Old Kinderhook." According to Wikipedia, that's only one theory. Etymonline says that "Oll Korrect" is the origin, and "Old Kinderhook" is how it became popular.

Why people not click on links I post?

@RegDwightѬſ道 — A lot of people make that mistake.

@Robusto Most importantly, the Boston city planners made that mistake.

RobustoThe same way Boston came up with its street plan. They followed the cow paths already there, and built houses where the streets weren't, and after a while it was too much trouble to change.

My own take.

@Robusto That's what I'm hinting at the whole time.
It's not like you never mentioned Boston in this chat.

@RegDwightѬſ道 — Wow, you must have been stalking me for some time now.

@Robusto That's true enough of the Cambridge city boundaries. A century ago they were hedge lines.
