On occasion I have up-voted an answer by someone reputable that I only half read...

@MrDisappointment I R iggerent too

Q: Jon Skeet Facts?

Bill the Lizard This question exists because it has historical significance, but it is not considered a good, on-topic question for this site, so please do not use it as evidence that you can ask similar questions here. More info: http://meta.stackoverflow.com/faq I'm looking for Chuck Norris...

Kit
@Kosmonaut What about you? Are you around?

'I'm looking for Chuck Norris...' This is trimmed sooooo conveniently.

@Cerberus Well, I admit I have done the same if short on time or brainpower, particularly if it seemed better than an even more incomprehensible alternative. I think it's more often half-understood than half-read. I read very fast (in English at least), but comprehension, well, it depends on caffeine levels...

6:05 PM
@aedia Heh, understandable. I do agree, however, that we should keep these voting urges in check...

@Cerberus Scribbles "do not vote while drunk" on post-it

To be honest, my first thought is never to up-vote, but whether or not it is eligible for a down-vote, once that is ruled out then decide if it is good enough for an up-vote.

@aedia Good one! scribbles "do not vote when unable to click without yawning" next to it
@MrDisappointment Hmm... but how often do you vote down? I rarely do.

@Cerberus i vote down every time someone is wrong on the Internet
3
that's why we have SE... so that we can finally vent our disapproval with everyone who's wrong

6:09 PM
@JSBangs But they're all wrong. Can the world cope with that much venting?

@MrDisappointment Wow that is a lot of down-votes, I think.
@JSBangs Very wise.

I have only voted 6 down in my short life here, it seems.
I thought it was more.

1390 up
49 down

Kit
712 up
19 down

I only vote down when I think a question really contradicts the truth and couldn't be / hasn't been corrected after comments.
Or when I really haven't the time to comment etc.

6:12 PM
hmm, i only have 73 down

@Kit We're pretty close.

i've obviously been lazy

@Cerberus I think that is not a lot of down-votes by you.

How many up?

641 up
32 down

6:13 PM
@MrDisappointment I have the same proportion as Kit, but, yes, you obviously have many more...

@Cerberus 1432 up

I am clearly selective with my votes

Rhodri has a bit more, but not that many.
Same for JSB.
Why am I stating the obvious?

@JSBangs There has definitely been more than 73 instances of wrongfulness on these here internets since I've been around here.

Or asking rhetorical questions?

6:13 PM
i am profligate with my votes, but the number of objectively wrong answers is low enough that i don't downvote that often

You are more dutiful.

@Cerberus Clearly you are in the movie version of EL&U. Everyone knows movie-watchers need to have the obvious explained to them, just in case the poor dears get confused.

319 question
1120 answer

@MrDisappointment now you're making me feel bad. i just went and cast two more downvotes in order to make sure that things balance out

@Rhodri Hehe. I suppose I am! Though I hardly ever watch any.

6:15 PM
I don't necessarily aim to please, but I get good results. Bingo! ;p

Kit
@JSBangs Mmm. Profligate. sighs dreamily

@JSBangs Hey! My answer wasn't that bad... sheesh.

Kit
@Reg Help, please.

Q: Is there an equivalent Creationist term for macroevolution?

user8841The term macroevolution is often abused (see the section "Misuse" in the Wikipedia article) by creationists who are referencing the Biblical concept of immutable "kinds" of animals. Is there a word or conveniently short phrase that could be employed to distinguish between evolution (both micro a...

@Kit Huh what? Sorry, busy fixing @MrD's typos.
@Kit Seen that.

@RegDwight Shhhhhh

6:17 PM
Wading through comments and flags.

you can put aperiod on thet if you like.

Kit
@RegDwight Ok. I should've figured you'd be on top of it.

@Cerberus did i downvote you?

@JSBangs Who cares? It's progress. It's the future. And besides, what's a down-vote between friends?

i downvoted drm for gratuitous and useless use of Google NGrams, and 3I for just being wrong

6:18 PM
@JSBangs I was kidding.

@RegDwight Phew! /me wipes brow.

Looks like @drm is trying to beat @JSB's editing record again

good for him
my edits are almost all just tag edits, which don't count for the Copy Editor badge, at least

13 more minutes until level 6.

@Vitaly what game?

6:28 PM

Wow.
I got beaten to it.
2

@JSBangs Shush! Don't encourage them!

That's pre-cog jinx.

oh that again
actually, i find the game intriguing based on all of the talk here, but i have no extra time to devote to it

I was thinking about creating a separate room for us to discuss that game. Except that it will suck out all the life out of this room. All that will be left will be Robusto complaining about CSS and Martha's niece's pictures.

Kit
6:30 PM
Funny. I read "devote" as "de-vote," i.e. "un-vote." Semantic satiety?

@JSBangs What's worse is pretending you do have the time, then participating only to lag behind and be mocked by @RegDwight.

Kit
@RegDwight Ahem Let's not forget Kit's weird sex talk.

No worries, RegDwight will mock you anyway. <mocks Mr. Disappointment. violently>
Anyhow, I gotta go. I'll leave that question up for the moment.
AFK for at least an hour or so.

Question?
Now, there's a typo for you.

@RegDwight well, it's no more off-topic than most of everythnig else we talk about here

6:33 PM
Later.

Aw, shucks.

grumbles
(Why does one's favourite FF extension suddenly give errors? Not fair.)

You still use FF? Chrome is the future...
Or aren't we talking browser talk here?

@Kit We need more talk about weird sex. Definitely.

@JSBangs I not so secretly want to play the game based on all the talk here, but don't have time plus it's blocked by my work's draconian internet filter.

Kit
6:36 PM
@Rhodri So what's your take on furries?

@MrDisappointment I like Chrome but I also depend on Firefox for its extensions.

@Kit I must admit, I don't understand that one at all.

@Rhodri Do they not have them on your side of the pond?

Fur just doesn't do it for me.

fur bikini, on the other hand...

6:38 PM
@MrDisappointment Do you really think so? But what about my precious extensions?

Kit
Oh no! Not the fur bikini references!

@aedia Yes, but it's a minority in a smaller minority that in the US

@Cerberus I hope it gets better. Perhaps your extension just needs an update or you can rollback a FF version?

Kit
@Rhodri So weird sex, but not particularly interesting as a topic of conversation?

@aedia @Cerberus Can you tell me the most useful extensions that you use?

6:39 PM
Chrome is still not a real browser: it doesn't have print preview.

I can't work anymore without WAVE and the Web Developer Toolbar and uhh, what's the other one down in the right corner. Uhh. Firebug, that's it.

@aedia I somehow managed to break my profile: the extension appears to work in another profile.

@Martha that's your criterion? <boggles>

Wow, that was a transcript of my thought process. I wonder why I'm doing that. Perhaps @Cerberus needed a break from narration.

6:40 PM
1. Easy Drag de Go: drag links, pictures, selected text in different directions to perform different actions on them, blindingly fast.

Kit
Mmm. Raquel Welch.

@aedia What does Wave do again?

Kit
Reminds me of that Python sketch, you know the one?

@Cerberus Accessibility checking.

Ah, that's better. I got the page rather than the image first time round

6:41 PM
@aedia Huh? What needs to be accessed?

Kit
@Rhodri "Image not found" here.

@aedia Firebug is available for Chrome. I agree the validation tools and web developer toolbar are useful, and I have FF installed (at work) with those, but only firing it up very occasionally since I truly find that the validation is so easily navigated to.

Curses. IMDb is too smart for me.

Kit
Here we are.

6:43 PM
What the fwack?

@JSBangs Well, part of my criteria. But it's such a basic thing that it basically becomes a show-stopper on its own. (I cannot possibly recommend it to my father, for example: I've finally trained him to always do a print preview instead of wasting reams of paper. [Training him to not print at all is a pipedream at this point.])

@Cerberus Uh, like, information to be accessed equally by people with and without disabilities. We have a law about it.

@Martha ah, well, parents are a different matter. i print things so rarely that i couldn't imagine requiring print preview as a feature, but i can understand it in your situation

Going back to the earlier upvote vs. downvote ratios, I think I have y'all beat: I have 25 downvotes and 2318 upvotes. Not quite 100:1, but close.
(And I'm willing to bet at least a quarter of those downvotes belong to 3I.)

Kit
6:48 PM
@Martha I bow to your awesomeness.

This is why I need Firefox. Do let me know if Chrome has a comparable extension...

Sure, Chrome can open links...

@MrDisappointment In a new tab, without right-clicking or holding down a key?

@Martha Middle mouse button.

Although @Cerberus, I think your video would be easier to understand if you didn't already have 14 gazillion tabs open.
@MrDisappointment Firefox can do that too, but not everyone has a middle mouse button.

6:52 PM
@Martha True.

@Cer: How is Chronos useful?

@MrDisappointment I am already using my middle button to grab and drag the view around (another extension).

@Martha It was a little difficult to see what happened, yeah. I had to watch twice. That is a lot of tabs.

@Vitaly Strike is very powerful; 3 attack is good; 5 hp is OK. It is not a top card, but probably very good at your level (no offense). Try it, use it.

If the way Chrome opens links can't be configured then I'd be tempted to write the damn extension for it.

6:54 PM
They're talking about it again, aren't they.

Well, I am suspicious about slow cards.

La la.

Q: Recommended English grammar books with lot of exercises/quizzes

anonmysOther existing answers are not helping me as I am looking for a book with extensive exercises or quizzes.

And how do you get Legendary cards anyway?

@Vitaly Don't play it first.
@Vitaly They are in gold packs, on occasion.

6:54 PM
"You can't just flagrantly vote down and close relevant questions." I think you'll find we can, old bean.

Okay thanks.

This is selecting text and dragging it up to search.
I dare @Mr Disappointment to post a video where he does that quicker.
I couldn't possibly be bothered by clicking any menu whatsoever.
Drag down is search in background tab, drag right and left can be used for different search engines.

@Cerberus Oh my. Doesn't your brain get muddled? Or does the action become rote?

@Cerberus I dutifully accept! However, I think I'm about due to change computers..

6:59 PM
@aedia It is absolutely intuitive. I keep doing it on other people's computer and feeling like my leg inexplicably dropped off.
@MrDisappointment I am awaiting your riposte...
And this was just one extension. And did I mention that you can use it to automatically save any picture in four different folders (or get a dialogue) by dragging it in each direction?

@Cerberus Heh. I may have to try this.

@aedia You will love it. I somehow foisted it upon my technically inept friend, and she says she is using it all the time and can't live without it any more.
(Not implying that you were technically inept... on the contrary!)

I know what you mean about missing a limb when you switch computers. I normally have a left-handed setup for work and a right-handed setup for gaming (also because my better half gets confused when I move the home mouses around) but it takes a good five or ten minutes to switch.
@Cerberus Heh, no offense taken ;)

Yikes, that would be the ultimate limb-lacking...
@aedia Yes. But that one doesn't work on FF4 or 5 (I'm still using 3.6). There is an (experimental) version that works on 4+, let me find it...
I haven't tried this one yet.
In fact I will install it now on my other FF, see if it works.

@Cerberus I have some weird ambidextrous habits so it's not bad, really, but at work it drives me bonkers if I have to use some terminal server that won't retain my mouse preferences and I've got two monitors differently-handed. I don't even know how to say that, it drives me so bonkers.

7:08 PM
I can imagine!

Right. After last night's marathon I promised myself an early night. I think on the whole that's now a middling evening, but all the same, I'm off home.

Even reading that confuses my narrow mind.

Cheery bye, omnes.

You survived the bike ride?

7:09 PM
Whoops, he's gone. @Rhodri, hope you get home safe and sleep well.

New version works perfectly.
For me, on FF 4.01.
@Vitaly Hmm... what about that?

IDK.

@Cerberus Turns out I've got 3.6 here still (as I don't control that, but somehow I'm allowed to install addons, not sure how that works but I'm not arguing) so current version works. And I'll try the other on my (ff 5 I think?) at home. I am so excited.

@aedia Excellent! I guarantee you ultimate bliss and incurable addiction.

I don't think I've ever been so excited about a browser extension since I had some other gesture thing years ago that was beautiful but not fast. It let you draw big swoopy gestures, like letters or numbers, almost, and it would recognize them, like for Back or Homepage or something, I think.

Q: The first man to land on the moon is Neil Armstrong.

adewaleI need the grammatical analysis of the sentence.

Really?

general ref / NARQ

@Vitaly I didn't quite understand why a wrinkly guy would be used for cosmetics commercial... weird peoples.

actually, i went with "not constructive"

The old gesture addon was like those terrible gestures from the game Black & White that always caused me to mis-train my Creature.

@aedia Yes, those are mouse gestures. I am totally and utterly hooked on them. You can get them for FF, or for your whole PC. Somehow not many people are enthusiastic about them, which I find very puzzling.

Kit
7:17 PM
I can't get this stupid function to work properly. Anyone know about functions, code behind, and master pages?

@Kit I have heard my developers utter those words in the midst of curses.

@aedia A program that is very easy to set up and works quite reliably is Just Gestures:

@Kit in the general sense, yes. but i may not be able to help you
stackoverflow.com <== i hear this is an ok site

Kit
@JSBangs If you don't mind wading through garbage, yes.

7:19 PM
@Kit you're asking a question. no garbage on the "ask a question" page except what you put there yourself

@Kit I know nothing about that stuff, I'm sorry...

Kit
@JSBangs I'm trying to call a function from code behind on a master page. It should return a string for a label text, but nothing is displayed.

@Cerberus Well, pfft, that's another one that will have to wait for a look till I'm home. Stupid work internet police.

@JSBangs I think the OP wants to know how to analyse to land, which would be a fair question. Just needs to be more specific.
@aedia That's the way they are!

@Kit is this asp? VB? COBOL?

Kit
7:21 PM
ASP.net, VB code behind. Anything about that jump out at you?
I'm using Text='<%# FunctionName() %>'

and FunctionName() returns a string, yes?

Kit
It's been so long since I've done this, I'm not sure what I'm doing anymore.
@JSBangs Yes.

is this a form element? if you're putting this in a text box you need <input type="text" value="<%# FunctionName() %>" />

Kit
I suppose I could tack it to the OnLoad event. That might work.
@JSBangs No, a Label.

i don't think the syntax you're using works with that
but i have barely any familiarity with asp.net, so i could be blinkered on this

7:25 PM
@Cerberus Thanks for the suggestion anyway. I use one of my computers at home from the couch (its monitor is the tv)... so I can see potential already for mouse gestures while I'm too lazy to reach for the keyboard.

Kit

Q: Please I need the grammatical analysis of the sentence.

adewaleThe first man to land on the moon is Neil Armstrong in 1969.

Am I drunk?

@Kit, but like i said, ain't no garbage on the Ask a Question page on SO

Kit
@JSBangs I am coming to that conclusion myself.

@Kit Dunno, did you down-vote?

Kit
Yeah, I know. I just thought someone here might give me a quick fix.
@MrDisappointment Ha ha ha.

@Cerberus I'm uploading something.

Like what JSB said but with 'label for' in it?

@aedia Yup, good idea. The gestures I use most and (global) up[copy], down[paste], (Firefox) left[back], right[forward].
@MrDisappointment Exciting!

Kit
@Kit So that question is a dupe of the other. Let's close at least one of them, ok?
@Cerberus Man, you are cracking me up. You're right. I'm definitely hasty.
@aedia Barf. I hate W3Schools.

7:30 PM
@Kit Hehe. I knew you'd understand. It was pretty funny reading that, your "possible duplicate: <quote title>".
@MrDisappointment Right, clicking on a menu... I can do that too... but that requires rudimentary coordination: your mouse needs to move and stop at a specific speed for a specific distance. Much less convenient. Furthermore, what if you want to search it in a background tab? What if you want to save a picture? Search something on Ebay?

@Kit Any particular reason? They're not great but not a terrible quick reference. Faster than my dead tree ones for most stuff. And more understandable than actual W3C specs.

Kit
@aedia Yes, true, but usually not what I'm looking for presented in such a way as to convince me that if I just looked a little longer, I could find what I needed.
Ta DA!
Tacking onto an OnLoad event worked like a charm.
0
Q: The first man to land on the moon is Neil Armstrong.

adewaleI need the grammatical analysis of the sentence.

@Kit I'm... not sure I savvy that. You don't want it to have what you want? Or, it's both not what you want and it tricks you into looking more?

@Cer: is One-Hit Kill 29 going to work on Mission 24?

Kit
@aedia The last.
How are these Neil Armstrong questions still open?

7:40 PM
why hasn't that question been closed yet? srsly, pplz

Kit
Come on, peeples.
@JSBangs Jinx!

@Kit coke. with coconut rum

Kit
@JSBangs No fair! Did you try it with yogurt?

@Kit Ah. Savvy can be a transitive verb, right?
Having a moment of self-doubt here, though I'm sure it's too late anyway.

Kit
@aedia Sure, I guess.
I heard what you meant.

7:44 PM
@Vitaly Yes I believe those missions are inclusive.

@Kit Wiktionary doesn't weigh in, but dictionary.reference.com/browse/savvy seems to think both are ok. Phew.

@Cerberus — I mean, is it going to work, as opposed to losing and wasting energy and time?

@Vitaly I meant, yes, I believe so, because "mission 24 and higher" generally includes mission 24 on that wiki. I don't remember which mission I used to do it myself, though. I'd do 24 if that one's easy for you.

I mean, am I going to beat the enemy with that deck, or am I going to lose on Mission 24?

> Here is a slightly cheaper version: As I was going back through the missions, I noticed mission 24 counted as a legal mission for this achieve.
From the same wiki page.

7:48 PM
because it specifically states “29” on the Wiki, so I don't know if that deck matches the enemy's deck for 24

@Vitaly I really have no idea what that mission is like, sorry.

But I remember the achievement was easy anyway, and a deck with all orbitals will work in many cases anyway.

Okay, thanks, I am trying then

@Vitaly Hard to say, but it will probably work fine.

7:50 PM
@Cerberus I accept your points, and ultimately that the video was pretty useless in comparison to everyday usage; I personally don't need such tools (at least not all of the time) and find keyword shortcuts and mouse gestures work fast enough. I'm all for productivity but shaving time of stuff like that just isn't effective IMO. Every man to his own, though.

@Vitaly Aww... were you close?

@Cerberus — Of course not. Look at the health bars.

Perhaps try it on mission 29 if you weren't? Or are you not there yet?

I am at 24.

7:52 PM
Ah.
Did you deplay the cannons first?
*deploy

In the screenshot, they are deployed first.

You have only 4?
Perhaps you need more...
And did you use a Command Center?

@Cerberus The card is shuffled randomly.
@Cerberus The deck on the Wiki shows no command centers. I used exactly that same deck I was asking about.

Yeah but those bronze packs are cheap...
Oh, ok. Well, I meant you could use CC's to protect yourself a bit and counter.
I never used that exact deck myself.

@Kit What's the question?

7:56 PM
Defeated again.

WW.
Aww.

So, a waste of 32 minutes in total.

What happens? Your cannons can't kill them fast enough to keep your ocmmander alive?

Yes.

Try adding a Command Center. I don't know what cards you have.
Oh, wait.
Is that the mission where you must use common cards?

7:57 PM
I only have a harbor command.

Hmm...

Kit
@Kosmonaut Sorry, I did get Reg and talked to him about it. Thanks though.

@Cerberus — “Defeat Mission 24 or higher playing only 1 Assault card, using Rally 5 times, and only attacking once.”

But I'm curious as to what it was! :)

I did that achievement much later, when I had finished all the missions. Perhaps it will be easier later on? Besides, that card you win isn't fantastic any way... I never use it.

7:59 PM
@Cerberus — The wiki says it's worth 4000 gold?

Kit
@Kosmonaut I wanted to call attention to the creationist question.

Possibly... okay, you might make some use of that gold; but it's less than a gold pack, so not that great...

@Kit Ah, I see!

To be honest, I never did many achievements.
Only when I specifically wanted a certain card.

I specifically want gold.

8:01 PM
I preferred getting further on with the missions.
A healthy attitude!

Kit
Ok, my peeps, I am off like a prom dress. Kisses and hugs to you all. See you tomorrow!

Perhaps if you get on to mission 29 and use this deck there? I really wouldn't have any idea on how effective various decks will be in various missions, hard to judge...
@Kit Haha, a charming expression!
Adios!

@Kit See ya!

b'bye, @Kit

1 hour later…
9:13 PM
@Vitaly I was about to go for that achievement too. Let me know if you get a deck that works.

9:25 PM
@MrHen — I gave up.
