tehwalrisYour conversion from celcius is not correct, since 0°F is not 0°C. Something like F = (9/5) * C + 32 should work for the conversion.

That person posted an answer to point out that the formula was wrong. I presume that's a non answer for CR, but does that technically mean the code is off topic for being non-working or is that a small enough mistake to be ok? Especially as it's an easy fix.

@Zak Sorry, I didn't notice.
@SuperBiasedMan It's small enough to be ok, in my opinion

@SuperBiasedMan I'd say that is a valid answer.

Unless the O.P. knew it was giving wrong results, then the question is off-topic

in this case, I'd let it pass either way.

@IsmaelMiguel Does it matter?

And define "right-swipe"

@ARedHerring I can't do that. I play too many games with this thing.

@IsmaelMiguel on Tinder, right-swipe means you "like" someone. I they swipe right on you back, you get to contact them.

@rolfl Oh I just use this to mess with people.

@rolfl good catch

@rolfl Oh snap.

My wife is getting new glasses soon, time to adjust again to having a new mistress..... I hate when she changes her hair, or glasses, whatever.... I have to relearn what she looks like...

@rolfl I had that problem when my last girlfriend changed hair colors.
So I pretty much ended it there.

What's worse, is that she often trades clothes with her mom..... and I have to be really careful then....

"You don't like me because I'm adventurous!" "No, I don't like you because every week I have to relearn what you look like."
@rolfl I'm not sure how I would respond to that.

My Mother in law borrowed one of my wife's dresses for a wedding recently, and I had to keep reminding myself which one was which.

I have that same problem. Most people I know don't.

Same here. All people look the same mostly

I can't even recognize my neighbors when I see them with a bike helmet on if I'm not used to it.

Yeah, it was really weird with the last woman I dated, because she had a really similarly looking sister.
That got me in trouble more than once.

No, not really (they ar enot really that similar) - they have different hair colours and faces, but it's that they are both are often working together, often in the kitchen, or something, and I walk in and there's a moment of hesitation, or confusion, because their head's in the fridge, or behind a cupboard door.

it was voted to close, and my reopen request is getting no joy.
It is his code, it is real code, it is not stub code.... what's the issue?

I voted to reopen.
Seems like a sound question to me.

@rolfl First line: "I am cleaning some legacy code (not written by me);"

4:30 PM
@rolfl I voted to leave closed because he wants an explanation of a a co-workers code.

That's my bet why it was closed

@IsmaelMiguel That in itself isn't an issue, he is maintaining it.

"So I am wondering if I am correct about this (comments are mine):"
You're right @Hosch250
It's asking an explanation about the code

@IsmaelMiguel That's what I thought as first, but he already figured it out, and was looking to make sure. I think it's fine.

Then he was asking validation on his study about the code instead of a code review?

4:33 PM
Kinda a code review review.

hmmm... it is "seeking an explanation"..... but it is also by definition looking for a code review.... all questions are.

Maybe a comment review then?

I'll chalk it up to one of those grey areas, and it won't have a clear resolution. There are a number of those areas, and that's OK.
I guess I just happen to be "a whiter" 2% of grey.

@rolfl Which shade of the 50 is that?

A lighter one .....

4:35 PM
what's the basis for closing? "not your code"?

I'm going to leave my reopen vote. If it gets reopened, then awesome! If not, that's unfortunate but it happens.

That's what the 2% is for..... one of the 50.
@Mat'sMug Seeking an explanation.....

@rolfl So would that be gray 24, then?

@Mat'sMug No. Seeking explanation. Quoting: "So I am wondering if I am correct about this (comments are mine):"
And then the code has comments

(Assuming they progress from lightest to darkest.)

4:36 PM
On a code that isn't his, yet

@EBrown I like to call it the "ana-grey".

@IsmaelMiguel clearly he's maintaining it
I've reopened.

In my opinion, it isn't his since he didn't touched

that's not seeking an explanation

He is asking is his comments are correct

Zak
4:37 PM
My impression of his question was a confirmation that our understanding of the code is the same as his understanding of the code.

@IsmaelMiguel that's playing with words. it's his to maintain. he's cleaning it up.

@Mat'sMug I agree.

(I didn't vote to close, I think)

He is maintaining it, but I VTRC because seeking explanation.

Zak
Which is not the same as a code Review IMO

4:38 PM
Meta?

I don't care either way.
Presumably we can ignore that line and just clean it up for him.

Zak
@IsmaelMiguel Is probably the place for hashing out these grey areas

It's a much less significant issue considering the question already has an accepted answer.

what if OP said "I'm iffy about these null checks, they seem redundant" - would that be asking for explanation, or stating what the code smell is?

He is seeking confirmation, not explanation. Two different things.

4:38 PM
^^

@Zak I think too

Zak
@Mat'sMug if it was as a comment on a larger question, sure. But when, as best I can tell, that's the whole question, I don't think it quite fits as on-topic

It can be closed as "Unclear what you're asking"

one trap with close-vote privs, is that it's easy to nitpick any post and find a reason to close it. but it's a trap. a bear trap. an exploding bear trap.

@all, remember that this is implied for all questions on Code Review:
> Do I want feedback about any or all facets of the code?

4:40 PM
^^

@IsmaelMiguel Everything can be closed as unclear what you are asking, if you really want to.

Zak
I honestly felt that the reviewer wasn't asking for a code review, but for validation that we agreed with his understanding of the code.

The nice thing about Close Vote Privileges is that you don't always have to use them.

@SimonForsberg That's not the point. Nobody agrees on what is being asked. I think that speaks for itself

> So I am wondering if I am correct about this (comments are mine):

@SimonForsberg So, no close as unclear?

Why would you want to close it as unclear?

4:44 PM
it's not his code and he doesn't understand it

What would be gained by closing it as unclear?

Because no one agrees on what is being trully asked

for the record, an edit is in progress

Nothing, same as leaving open as-is

@Malachi He's the maintainer. He does understand it. He just want to make sure his understanding is correct (which it is)

@Mat'sMug Now I don't have any complaint what-so-ever about the question. Well done!

@Malachi I try hard not to answer question I feel are off topic. If I answer it, it's because I see something real to review. In this case, I feel my answer is "proof" that the question was a "diamond in the rough". There was a lot of stuff to say. Now, I am trying to reconcile why I was able to give a "good" code review on a question that was apparently not asking for one..... so, what gives?

+1 on that comment, @Mast.

@IsmaelMiguel I haven't changed anything in OP's intent there. When a minor clarifying edit turns a "gray-zone" question into a "definitely on-topic" question, then perhaps the question wasn't in the "gray-zone" in the first place, and could simply have used a clarifying edit instead of a bunch of close votes?

@Mat'sMug Another troll trying to rep fast.

Wonder if the creator of the CommitStrip had already voted on it before it was made into a CommitStrip (or even locked)?

@Jamal have you read tip #5 of that one? ^^

So, standing in line at the coffee shop (Hi Tims), and the group-of-4 in front is having a happy, boisterous conversation. 2-guys, 2-girls. Friends, colleagues, whatever. The guy doing the most exuberant talking has his fly down.... do I tell him? No!

@rolfl Damn man. Just watch the world burn.
I think I'd tell him.

5:51 PM
@rolfl Which would be more polite? To tell or not to tell?
If no one has noticed, then there's no need to tell him.

@rolfl not if it doesn't earn you a coffee ;-)

If I were standing there (for what must have been at the least several minutes) with my fly down, I would want someone to tell me.

@IsmaelMiguel It looks close enough, but I wouldn't have recognized it.

@SimonForsberg Not telling. You don't want people thinking that you're looking at their crotch (or how it is spelled)
@Mast It took me 1 minute
As I said: I tried to upvote it about 50 times

@IsmaelMiguel There's a certain level of understanding between men that you must report such issues.

Hmmm... question for lifehacks, I think.

Or I'm sure someone can turn it into a question for World Building

@EBrown If someone random told me that, I would be weirded out and disgusted to the point of leaving. But that's me

@SimonForsberg World Building
It's probably already on Lifehacks.
Huh, that's weird. It's not on Lifehacks.

Q: Ηow can I keep my jeans' zippers from unzipping on their own?

ShevliaskovicA lot of jeans have zippers that open on their own. For me, it is quite uncomfortable to be re-zipping them in the middle of the street. What can I do to prevent this?

@SimonForsberg Not the same.

but it's related

Loosely.

Q: How to tell a person their fly is down

rolflI was in line at a coffee shop and a very animated, friendly group (2 guys, 2 girls) was just in front of me. They were talking away happily about what seemed like work-related issues - so I assume they are all work colleagues. I noticed that the one guy's fly was down, and I was torn as to whet...

@EBrown I don't think that specific question would be on-topic on lifehacks. Probably opinion-based
@rolfl that's a better question

5:58 PM
We'll see.

@rolfl Upvoted

@rolfl If only I were a Lifehacks member.

I really have no clue about how the lifehacks Life Hacks (happy now, @EBrown?) people will respond to that one

@SimonForsberg That one is actually "Lifehacks". ;)

@EBrown Life Hacks, no?
oh damnit
