Reminds me. There's a rather uninspiring Scala question I should go and answer.

I just found a really interesting C# question, but I'm not sure I'll get to it.

Q: Password building and verification

blipman17I'm building a library for myself to use to store user passwords. The library itself shouldn't do the retrieval of data, but it should provide container classes for the data. I would like to know what I've done wrong in it, what could be improved and what's concidered a bad practise with passwor...

@RubberDuck been steady for as long as I've seen it ;-)

12:17 AM
So, about 6% of the questions that come through either no one knows anything about, or they can't be improved?
Or, no one gets around to it.

I'm looking rather despondently at this one.
Some questions just aren't interesting. The problem is boring, the code just sad and bad...

Sometimes (rarely, but sometimes) it's just good code with not much to say.

Ooh, @Mat'sMug, can you pin that one message of mine?

done

That one should actually be in the room description.

That's a good idea @Hosch250

I have the feeling CR demands more effort of answers than some sites (could be wrong but it's certainly how I feel). Either from the very nature of the task or from the way the site has grown.
Which is good, but if the question is uninspiring, the energy for the effort is harder to find

or from the way its users care about delivering quality content
did I just post a SO question that would be a better fit on CR?

Q: What's an idiomatic XAML TreeView with CollectionViewGroup groupings?

Mat's MugI have a TreeView that looks like this: <TreeView Grid.Row="1" x:Name="InspectionResultsTreeView" ItemsSource="{Binding Source={StaticResource InspectionTypeGroupViewSource}, Path=Groups}" ItemTemplate="{StaticResource InspectionTypeGroupsTemplate}"> </TreeView> The ItemsSo...

@Mat'sMug That's part of what I meant by the way the site has grown. I meant the culture that has developoed.

@Mat'sMug Voting to close because it belongs on Code Review ;)

the CR version would actually be much more "meaty" ;-)
flash news: "Beta-Blue B. Gone" hit the HNQ

12:28 AM
How do I post images?

Not at all surprised.
@Alex_n00b fizz.png

@Alex_n00b use the [upload...] button next to [send] :)

I don't have it

You might not be able to if you don't have enough rep.

^^

12:29 AM
of course

I never knew there was a rep requirement to that.

@Alex_n00b eh, stick around, rep isn't all that hard to earn on this site - what language(s) are you familiar with?

@Mat'sMug seems like a CR question to me. Not sure it's a good fit for SO.

I speak portuguese and french fluently and I also speak english(of course) and some spanish

@Alex_n00b Programming languages.

@Alex_n00b lol I meant programming languages ;-)

I also speak some words in chinese and japanese ;)

I'm learning C

Lol

I you want you could give some rep by liking my question :)
of course I'm kidding, just up vote it if you want

still on-topic for SO IMO

Let me know when you get an answer - I've gone down that rabbit hole before.

Oh sure. On topic, yes. But on topic doesn't mean good fit.

but I don't want to "spoil" my CR post with a post that's solely about the XAML...
hmm

I also knew a little HTLM CSS and Javascript but I forgot everything cause I didn't practice a lot
Besides that I understand almost every scripting language

12:36 AM
then you can probably review more code than you think you can already

@Alex_n00b Look at other questions on the site. See if you can answer them. If you can't, even for a language you know, you've identified something else to learn.

reviewing other people's code is an awesomely gratifying self-teaching experience

12:40 AM
Up to a point, you can learn from other people's mistakes without having to make them yourself ;)

@itsbruce I'll do that tomorrow cause now I'm a bit tired, it's 1:40 AM here

'night!

@sirpython what does ORLY? mean
good night

ORLY? = Oh really?
It was a joke off of what you had said.
(no offense intended)

LOLCODE!

12:42 AM
ok, I searched for that on google and it gave me results about a city in france

@SirPython Not offended
I gotta go, bye, thanks for all your support

Cya!

@Alex_n00b Seeya!

OK, so now that I have Roslyn built, I need to figure out how to change the code generator so it generates the right code...
I guess that can be a job for tomorrow.

Q: Do we really need this [framework]?

RubberDuckI'm questioning the usefulness of the framework tag. There are only 20 questions at the moment and they don't appear to have much in common. Seems like some kind of catch all tag to me. Should we burn it?

Going once... Going twice...

burn it
just let it burn
pshoooowsh

I'll give it another day or so, but my trigger finger's getting itchy. Speak now or forever hold your peace folks. =;)-

Q: Why will my GSAP TweenMax project not animate?

Wadzanai MufundeI've created a page about the Justice League, because I'm an avid comic lover. I have tested this page on my Chrome browser and none of the animations work at all. However on my codepen, all of my animations save one work. The one that will not work on my codepen is the clip on line 2: Twe...

I really want the one that asks us to explain code.
I got my problem solved, but I feel guilty for spamming the Roslyn room :(

@Hosch250 funny you mention it, we've been discussing that in the mod room lately

Discussing what?
My spamming the Roslyn room on GitHub?

Damn.. 30 minutes, 12 views, 1 vote. #SOnotreadytovote

Oh, lol, the meta post?
Do you want my vote?
Upvote applied.

CodeReview SE may be more appropriate for this kind of question... Note that LINQ is generally not useful for removal of items (as opposed to filter + ToList)... On other hand removal of items one-by one is likely significantly slower than filter and recreate list - try and measure. — Alexei Levenkov just now

Eh, thanks.. doesn't make SO voting any less anemic though.. or is the question boring?

I am in a total predicament - I'm writing a one-page memorandum in 12pt Times New Roman single spaced with new lines between every paragraph and every reference (references must be on the same page).

@Duga It's. Code Review. Not. CodeReview.

1:21 AM
The top five lines are taken over by a mandatory heading.

CodeReview SE..should have known something like that would have existed but never thought to check. Thanks — GPGVM 55 secs ago

So, I have about 25 lines to write actual content on, not counting heading lines.
I guess I'm going to collapse some of my paragraphs together - most of them are only 1-2 sentences at 3-4 lines.
Oh, and the guy says we have to write it in APA style, but then overrides 95% of the APA rules.

I'd post the whole method on CR though, not just a snippet; Code Review folks like to see the full context and comment on any and all aspects of the code (that's actually in their Help Center rules for on-topicness). See you there! — Mat's Mug just now

Hey, @Phrancis! How goes things?

1:30 AM
Good good, been busy moving into a new apartment. How are you all

Great!

Playing digital hookie.

That sounds dirty for some reason

LOL.
It means I was programming (or trying to) while I should be doing school.

You know, that black and orange is growing on me a bit. I would be really curious though to see how it looks like with a code.review() banner instead of the one with the magnifier (which I also like, btw)
Well, off-black, rather, which I think is "the right kind of black"

I'm positively scared.
I've had this feeling before, and everything always turns out alright, but I still can't get over it.

Kind of like the Uncertainty Reduction theory - there is a lot of uncertainty going on here.

Q: How can I wipe my Chromebook without the powerwash button?

Ethan BierleinI have a Chromebook, and ideally, I'd like to restore it to it's factory state, without any owners, any user accounts, or any data whatsoever. There's only one problem. I have no access to the powerwash button. Is there a way to completely wipe and restore my Chromebook to it's factory state?

Time to screw around ^^

@EthanBierlein You'll probably never get one from your school again.

They put special software on those, so I hear.

If I log in with my school google account after wiping it it'll automatically re-download all that special software
Re-register the device in the district, essentially.

1:55 AM
They'll kill you.

only if they can catch me

Are you sure? It wouldn't do that on my computer with my school Google account.
@EthanBierlein Their IT will know who it is.
I'll be an accomplice. Have an upvote.

if they catch me I'll come up with some explanation like "well, uh, i was just curious and exploring my interests, hurr durr durr"
@Hosch250 Thanks santa! :-)

@EthanBierlein that totally sounds like "I've found/stolen a Chromebook, how can I wipe it?"
2

@EthanBierlein Is it Acer?

1:58 AM
Hmm, maybe I should edit the question.
@Hosch250 No, it's a dell.
Nevermind, I think I'll just leave it and see what happens.
Hmm, maybe I should edit this in:
> To clarify this is "my Chromebook".

Hmm, my district's IT department may be watching me talk about this right now.

yup

Also, it has a warning - you can't re-enroll managed devices.
It sounds like you want to download a ChromeOS ISO and install from there.

From this link: howtogeek.com/190645/…
@EthanBierlein One thing to try from a Google webpage - Ctrl+Alt+Shift+R + Restart.
Try that one first. If it works, I'll post it as an answer.
Did it work?

Nope
:(

OK.
Try the webstore link.

Aha, I believe that I should get to the "Damaged OS" screen through ESC+REFRESH+POWER, and then insert a flash drive with the ChromeOS .ISO.
Wait, let me try something.

@EthanBierlein This machine is not for college/university right?
(out of curiosity)

@Phrancis Ordinary school.

2:13 AM
Well, that didn't work.
I guess I might just pry off the bottom and see what I can do.

@EthanBierlein Are you in CS or other such field?

@Phrancis I wish. I'm thinking that's what I'm going to do when I reach that point.

@EthanBierlein You are still in HS, aren't you?

So, it's general ed?

@Hosch250 Yeah

2:14 AM
Then the device isn't for college/U.

^^

There
Celebrate

Hey, I saw that delete @EthanBierlein ;)

But seriously though, I would be tempted to discourage you about trying to make a ChromeBook into a computer you actually want to use

2:17 AM
Actually, I don't want to use it. I just want to see what I can do with it.
I'm gonna see if I can get it to run a low-level linux shell or something.

Truth is, you're going to be sandboxed at some point, and then it's gonna suck. And the farther along you go, the more it will suck
(I don't know if that is actually the "truth", but it sounds pretty good)
In any case, ChromeBooks AFAIK are pretty crappy computers to do anything, except if it's a "Google thing"
Heck, I don't think you can even VBA on a ChromeBook

Well, you can do Ubuntu on a CB.
Which means you can then do many more things.

@EthanBierlein You tried ESC+Refresh+Power, didn't you?

@Hosch250 Not yet

Try that.

2:21 AM
That'll have to wait until I can get a chromeos.iso file.

If that doesn't work, I have one more trick up my sleeve.

What?

Plain Refresh+Power apparently triggers are hard-reset.
One other thing - have you tried just booting from an Ubuntu ISO?

Nope.

They take just a couple minutes to download, and they can't be any worse than Chrome OS.

2:23 AM
Oh right, yeah.
I feel.. just a little dumb right now.

And that way you won't get school crapware loaded right back on either - it won't be able to run.

Nice.

Best case scenario, you crash the school server and they lose all the data telling them who it is (until they get the laptop back, that is).

Lol, I like how we refer to the software the school puts on this stuff as "crapware".

LOL, look at this gem of a commit message: "Roslyn.Says("Hello World");"

2:25 AM
@Hosch250 But yeah... wait.. Best case?
I think that'd be worst case.
But at this point I could care less.

Best case/worst case, what's the difference?

ooh this is getting exciting!
^^ and it works!

@Mat'sMug Oh, I thought you were talking about our conversation. lol

nah, busy coding here ;-)
isn't this utterly awesome?

I love WPF

I love Mathematic/WolframAlpha
Oh jeez
The standard non-professional copy of Mathematica is 2,745 USD.
I'm, gonna have to get a real job if I want to buy it.

@EthanBierlein Do they have a student program?

@EthanBierlein 'real job'?

@Quill i.e. not burger-flipper

2:43 AM
Wow. Every reference to the symbol I want to edit in Roslyn is in generated code.

@Mat'sMug right

It would appear that Roslyn generated itself from nowhere.

@Hosch250 Yeah, but only if you're working towards a degree of some sort at an accredited school.

And they all say "This file was generated by a tool on 9/15/2015. DO NOT HAND EDIT!"
Dishes time, see you later.

later

2:46 AM
@Mat'sMug Well, if I got a job flipping burgers, and worked for ~4 hours a day, for 100 days, at minimum wage, I could make just enough to buy it.

@EthanBierlein try that while paying rent

Oh, sorry. I wasn't clear. I meant getting a job right now, while I don't have to pay rent. (yet)

what's the average wage for a fast food worker in america

7.25 for small businesses, 9.00 for large businesses.

I'm on 14.5 at work, it's okay

2:48 AM
Oh wait, that's just minimum wage, nvm
Well, I'm off to bed. night everyone.

'night!

night

@Mat'sMug Have you got SQL certs?

nope
should I?

Dunno, I was hoping you knew ;)

2:54 AM
IMO certifications are not worth much... but I'm very much biased against... I don't even have a degree in anything whatsoever

My company noted today that I might be interested in SQL certs, so I was just trying to aggregate some information about them

hey if the company is paying for them, go for it!

That was my thought as well
I might hit up the DBA room then soonish, check if it's worthwhile and such. After I'm done packing and unpacking boxes lol (anyone else hate moving?)

Would appreciate any help here:

Q: Balanced Random Assignment in Python
