[Zomis/StackSTV] 13 commits. 27610 additions. 105 deletions.
^^ that is what happens when you commit election data to a github repo
26996 of those additions were pure data

@SimonAndréForsberg HOLY CARP that's a lot of data

Hmm. I wonder how much memory a github "addition" is. byte?

1 addition = 1 line

Ah.
Wow. 26996 lines is longer than some commercial-grade applications...

@SimonAndréForsberg A valid point-I'll rephrase: If you can improve the question by providing more context, I think it would be a better fit on codereview — PhatWrat 4 mins ago

@EthanBierlein When you're talking about data (rather than code), 26K is not that big of an amount, really

@Phrancis Well, yeah. Compared to some databases, 26K could be information about one person/thing.

The OP has cross-posted on CR and improved their question, this one here should probably be closed — Phrancis 9 secs ago

Q: Video Game AI State Change

James HogleI have here a snippet of code from a simple video game AI enemy. The basic idea behind the enemy is that he can be in one of a few states. By default he is in a patrolling state, where he moves around at a slow speed to random points within a circle. While in this state, he is rolling every X ...

@CaptainObvious I just fixed that too
@Malachi I had the same issue, and then I uninstalled Resharper and it ran much faster

I don't think I have Resharper

This is irking me.

That is closing before it writes anything.

A: Video Game AI State Change

Hosch250You are right that this roll is biased. Instead of using a fixed range and less-than for your rolls, you should just roll once and use specific ranges to choose which action is taken. It isn't that.
I'm using the built-in Click-once installer.
The trouble is, it packages everything in an MSI or something and I can't read the files I want to.

yea, you have to bracket the ref

Does anyone else separate the types of tabs they have open in their browser with new tabs?

No. Then I'd have too many tabs open to be able to discern the difference between each tab.

2:00 AM
@Quill uh, no. when I have >5 tabs, I start closing stuff.
so you caught @skiwi's sickness did you?

I sometimes have random tabs, like some SO solution that I used 4 hours ago that I forgot to close, open.

Apologies, @200_success, I must've read the question wrong

Q: Partial view for frequently used drop down lists

AkbariI have one input that is needed in many forms, so I created a partial view for that. In the partial view I query the database and generate a drop down list. I just want to make sure, this is the best way to achieve this. The partial view looks like this: @model long? @{ var data = Utilit...

@CaptainObvious I thought hypothetical, but it's not

I guess I'm old. back in the days we didn't have such fancy tabs. if you wanted to have 2 sites active you almost needed to have 2 landlines and dial-up modems.

2:05 AM
@Quill how do you separate your tabs? i.e. what categories do you place them in?

@Schism (work) | (chat.se) | (cr, for monitoring incoming)
where | is a new tab

OMG I just discovered the pin tab functionality. feels dumb

I had it on, but you can't see the numbers of unread messages

hmm right

I love to use pinned tabs for things where I just want to know if something updated, rather than exactly how many updated
they work really well with dark themes where the little animation is easier to see
try using a theme like this one where inactive tabs are still dark; it makes it really easy to see at-a-glance if you have a new email or facebook message or the like

2:12 AM
hmm if you hover the tab you get a tooltip with the (n)

I think SE chatrooms are better left unpinned so you can immediately see the (*)

@Mat'sMug ^

yeah

I'm tempted to make a jabber-like plugin to put chat.se into a message client

I'm not quite sure if this has invalidated the answer.

2:21 AM
@Jamal That relates mostly to the engine that OP uses, the answer doesn't even touch databases

@Jamal looking at the answer, looks legit

query performance improvements aren't always due to bad schema or lack of indexes. especially when LINQ-to-Entities is being misused.

I'm drawing a blank. What is the algorithm called when you choose the most optimal path per level that is often used in the Travelling Salesman problem?

3:46 AM
It doesn't create a globally optimal solution, but it does produce a fairly optimal solution that is faster than finding the O(n^n) globally optimal solution.

@Mat'sMug OK, but not what I wanted.
OK, the Greedy Algorithm:
A greedy algorithm is an algorithm that follows the problem solving heuristic of making the locally optimal choice at each stage with the hope of finding a global optimum. In many problems, a greedy strategy does not in general produce an optimal solution, but nonetheless a greedy heuristic may yield locally optimal solutions that approximate a global optimal solution in a reasonable time. For example, a greedy strategy for the traveling salesman problem (which is of a high computational complexity) is the following heuristic: "At each stage visit an unvisited city nearest to the current city"...

8:31 AM
ha!
this time I was faster

You surprise me, I usually beat you to it.

I must admit I was already on the Q&A on my other monitor

Well, that makes sense
Well, I have 2 monitors as well
The other one has Notepad++ on it
It's sad because at work, where I'm at, I have 2x 21" 1080p LG IPS screens
While at home, where I do all the gaming, I have a 19" 1280x1024 screen

Have a 24" next to my 15.6" at work. 21" next to 15.6" at home.

I wouldn't mind a 24" screen
But for that, I would need to overclock my CPU by 200%

8:36 AM
2x same size is better than 1x big with 1x small.

It is
But as weird as it might seem, both show different colors

About a year ago, I had a desktop at work with 2x 24". That was heaven.

Even though the settings are the same

Such a shame good things never last.

What happened?

8:37 AM
It was a temporary assignment, only lasted 6 months.

Well, I had luck on this one and I'm working for almost 3 years

If I ever get the chance I wouldn't mind a more permanent assignment there. Although it's in the middle of nowhere, the working conditions are awesome.

Where I'm at, is in the middle of a freaking vulcano! With the beach 1km away. Just to tease.
The downside of having a job is to get up early and walk around 1.8km everyday, 4 times a day, no matter what weather it is outside. But hey, at least I have money!

Walking 1.8km and "downside" ...
I've got an hour commute by train to my job..
that's ~20 km

At least you go by train

8:51 AM
because you could't buy a bike or think of it as enjoyment....
also train is almost always crowded as hell..

I still would rather have a train
I have 3 options:
1- walk my way to work
2- get up 30 minutes earlier to get a bus to arrive 15 minutes earlier
3- wake up on time to get a bus that arrives late

buy a bike...
1.8km is a nice 15 minutes relaxed bikeride

Yeah bike to work is really nice actually

But I don't have where to store it

Especially 1.8 km

8:57 AM
A car would be better, but I can't affort a driving license

Just lock it outside your house if you don't have somewhere else to put it

This area isn't known for being a good place to leave stuff outside. Lets just say that, at the minimal chance, things go missing

Here it's 5 min bike, 40~45 min bus, wait a few minutes, 5 min bus, 5 min walking

That doesn't sound fun....
1 hour to go to work...
Damn
