@rolfl isn't that what I did? kind of....

I am miffed.... I was at +16 on a -32 question or something, just afew votes short of gold... then the SE CM's step in and delete it.... MOD ABUSE!!! I am a mod and they are ABUSING ME!!!!

@Jamal sorry to dig this up again, I was at lunch, what happened with this? I see the question is open and almost closed again?

@rolfl But you still got Nice Answer! Be grateful! :D

Huh, Meta Stack Exchange has gone offline for me.

@Malachi Basically, someone refused to cooperate with us when explaining our edits and the closure. The OP then took it to MSE to complain about our mod abuse.

6:03 PM
Oh, just https.

and the first review is..... close or don't close..... lol

^^^ Mod abuse

What was gained by deleting that MSE question?

about as much as what was gained by keeping it..... nothing

I believe there's more value in keeping it than removing it.

6:08 PM
It's happened a few times for me. Meta.se is a different site... different rules

I never flagged it anyway. In fact, I forgot to flag it as off-topic before...

@rolfl I was under the impression that the entire Stack Exchange network had the same rules when it comes to deleting things.

No, not at all. Sites like skeptics and programmers just delete things that are not god enough.
deleting answers is common there.

because things that aren't god enough, don't deserve to be.
;^)

@Simon - I am not saying I agree with the deletion, just that it was expected... I am surprised it lasted as long as it did.
It was a very intense, but low-view question... less than 100 views, or so.
I saw no input from any SE staff....

6:12 PM
I'm glad it wasn't on CR.meta.

Hm. In my forest of tabs, I still have the question open in one of them.

@rolfl It surprises me that you were expecting the staff to say something

I probably started the whole thing up again....sorry

I think having it on the main meta helped take some of the blow from CR.

@rolfl No wonder the Stack Exchange jungle is as complicated as it is. I was just thinking about how many different guidelines there are, and how they have changed over time, and here you come and introduce even more ones...

@SimonAndréForsberg Let's just say there are N sites and N guidelines.

6:17 PM
@SimonAndréForsberg Consider Code Review does not allow editing of question code after they are answered.

I more think N sites and N*M guidelines

That is a site-specific "rule".

@rolfl Meta is kind of confusing around the topic of Best Practice. so I didn't use that as a basis for casting my close vote.

@rolfl but that's part of "answer invalidation", which is a policy on all sites (is it not?)

@SimonAndréForsberg No, it's not.
Answer invalidation is, I think, unique to Code Review

6:18 PM
I actually looked for meta posts that said what is or isn't topic surrounding best practice

@rolfl but chameleon questions are frowned upon across SE

@rolfl on SO if the person fixes their code, it isn't broken anymore and should be deleted. doesn't that count as answer invalidation?

@IsmaelMiguel Not all that surprising.....
Someone had a bad clock setting oh their repository at some point, and the commit got pushed with the wrong timestamp.

Since the timestamp is server-side

Maybe the government used Github for version control in the 70s?

Bad data happens... probably got force-cleaned, but some field somewhere is causing issues.
or, the code came from something like a svn2git.

@rolfl I wouldn't mind a bounty, but is alien to me.

Bad data happens
specially when you don't prevent it
It's, in theory, relatively easy
Measure the difference between the computer's clock and the file timestamp
Then you calculate the difference from the server and store that timestamp
If one fails, you can resort to ask what date it was created

@Malachi - Really? Why did you do this?
you need to add more code, there are reasons for different naming practices, but only having 3 lines of code won't allow us to tell you how or why. we need more context. — Malachi 54 mins ago
That's really, really frustrating.

same reason I did....
I am sure that if we had more of the original code, that we could find a way to filter out _filepath, but you haven't told us much about the code, how can we tell you what the best practice is, concerning 3 lines of code? I am sure that you don't hardcode the value for _filepathMalachi 3 hours ago
but now that I read that second one, it doesn't quite say the same as the first one I commented

So, apart from the confused close reasons, the snafu with mod abuse, the title edits, the close reasons the flags, the self-vandalism, and everything else, you now tell a person who has answers on his question already, that he should add more code?
So that I can roll that back too?

@CaptainObvious Hey, I had to do that once too.
What I did, was what he did originally, and use a while(nameAlreadyExists(name)) sort of loop and append a random digit to the end.
In theory, it could cause an infinite loop, but it never does - especially in my situation.
What I would do here, however, is prompt the user for a name and validate it, ensuring a name is never given twice.
If the user wants to save a game using another game's name, they have to delete the other game first, and then save the new one - overwriting isn't allowed.

@bazola OK, just saying what I did here, and what I as a user would expect.
No problem either way, these kind of questions intrigue me.
How can we get away from the theoretical infinite loop? I need to look that up.

well, mine doesn't have the infinite loop, because it just searches the integers up to the total number of existing games
it could be a huge search if the user saves thousands and thousands of games, but even then it would probably be pretty fast

I mean, though, if the user saves infinite games, there is the infinite loop.

yeah i guess that is true
in both your case and mine, the infinite loop is effectively impossible though?

Mine didn't have an infinite loop problem either, but if the user saved infinite resx keys, it could (if the keys were very poorly named).

Yes I thought of that but would it accept a POST ?
if it's just a file..
in the server hierarchy

@SeanParsons "comments on something etc" — comments on what, exactly?

@SeanParsons databases are fun!
...for some values of 'fun'

@SeanParsons There are many languages and solutions really that can solve that for you. Pick one.
@SeanParsons then get some db experience?

@200_success 's comment, @SeanParsons In that case, you could try Disqus as a commenting system, easy setup (so I hear)

Ok let me give you a example, theres a page where the users write a letter to oprah and instead of it being sent to the DB it gets sent to the owners email and then they have to go into the .html file and update it to show.
or create an entire new HTML file copying the code from the previous file and just changed the content to what the person wanted.
My language preference is Javascript

I don't understand. Do you want some kind of wiki or blog engine?

Might I suggest the JavaScript room?

@SeanParsons sounds like you should look into Node.JS in that case, unless you want to learn a new language.

Should I be learning Node or Mongo or both?

what @Phrancis said ^^
Should I be learning C# or Java or both?

Also read their room rules first

11:48 PM
that too ^^

Do you want to learn to write something new, or install something to get the job done?

How can we tell you what you should learn or not learn? Learn what you need to know when you need it.
