@maaartinus Really? Interesting.

Do you mean the mods are omnipresent?
40 points to cap.

@maaartinus They are always omnipresent. There, and not there, here, and not here.

8:01 PM
so... s/mods/gods

@maaartinus Man, I'd be a santa, but I'm out of votes.
^^
Woot! another answer! I'm on a roll this week!

@EthanBierlein No problem.... there's a lot of time. What's the votes limit? I can't remember to ever have hit it.

It's 40 votes per day.

A: Vehicle registration task

Ethan BierleinFirst off, variables and functions should be in snake_case, not PascalCase. Only classes should be in PascalCase. If you have a variable with an unchangining value, (constant), it should be in UPPERCASE_SNAKE_CASE. Secondly, I'm noticing that you're putting variables in parentheses in a lot of y...

WOW! I hardly ever gave 4.

@EthanBierlein Me too.
That's if you hit a certain ratio of question/answer votes.
If you only vote answers, you get 30.

8:04 PM
Hmm, never knew that

If you vote questions, you get another vote for every few questions up to 10.
I rep capped, I vote capped, I should try to flag cap and star cap.

I rep capped for the first time today.

[badge:mortarboard] - congrats @EthanBierlein!

Thankx @Mat'sMug!

Am I over-doing this?
Sub Foo()
    Dim Foo As New Class1
    With Foo
        With .Foo
            .Foo = 42
        End With
    End With
End Sub
(idea being to test identifier resolution code)

8:09 PM
I have no idea.

everything works... except the local Foo picks up the .Foo's as references, which is wrong.

Then make it work right.
Great job so far!

:)

How many mods does it take to close a question?

Q: Should I use CDATA in javascript?

Niklas in StockholmWhat difference does this make: // ...code Compared to this ...code

Any experienced C# programmers around?

      with b
         foo := bar
         baz := baal
      end
    end
with no idea what belongs where.

Why can't I use var in a class field like this? public var roverList = new List<Rover>();

becaue a field cannot be implicitly typed

@EthanBierlein Sort of.

Ah, okay.

8:16 PM
I mean, I'm sort of experienced.

@Mat'sMug So fields have to be explicitly typed?

yup

Seems a little quirky though.

private readonly IList<Rover> _rovers;
and then init in construtor

What's the difference between IList and List?

8:19 PM
IList<T> is an interface, List<T> is one implementation of it

Okay. Lemme look something up real quick.
Okay. There we go.
Had to re-look up what an interface was.
C# is cool.
I also like how VS2015 lets you "send a smile". It makes Visual Studio feel more friendly.

All their beta software does - you can send frowns too.

Yup. I know. I just like having the cute smiley face up in the corner.

8:32 PM
Good job!

I'm going for the gold flag badge.

Nice.

Now I should find bad posts and flag them (but that is tougher - posts are watched more closely than comments).

I'm gonna get a gold badge in about three hours, and then another in two days.

I'm about 1/4 of the way to the gold flag badge, so if I flag-cap every day...
I just might get it.

Q: Link Git hub project to code review

Loki AstariI am currently writing some open source that's available in github. Of course I am also getting the code reviewed here. One of the things with github is the documentation allows me to put little tags in the documentation that get evaluated (see README.md) An example is the travis build (a tool ...

@LokiAstari is on a roll with his questions.
Keep the good stuff coming.

I'm going to post an SQL question after Reload.
Oh, maybe not. This is pretty simple.
What's the SQL comment again?

8:55 PM
@Hosch250 I usually use ` --`
But SQL does only need comments if you have a whole bunch of it.

Yeah, that link has a zillion.
Well, two.

Monking?

Hi, @TheKittyKat.

hi!

KittyKats are very popular... how did you get almost 20,000 views of your snake-in-c++ quesiton. That's awesome

9:02 PM
I have no clue

Hi Kitty

Came back after a long time and it was there

heh... the surprise gift.
Not exactly a rare gold badge on Code Review, but it's a nice question, just not one I would have expected to be quite that popular

Q: Snake game in C++

TheKittyKatThis is my version of the Snake game written in C++. How could it be improved and what general advice would be useful for future projects? #include <iostream> #include <conio.h> void run(); void printMap(); void initMap(); void move(int dx, int dy); void update(); void changeDirection(char key)...

More views, though, now ^^^^

@rolfl Why? It was a good question.

@Mast - it has 20,000 views...

People like snake. Everybody should like C++. Much views.

@rolfl I guess snake is more popular than hash.

9:06 PM
Also, it is not a badge I have, so I am curious if there's a way to promote or advertise the questions ;-)

I just bumped it

That's the most popular question - but remember, I'm rep capped already.
@rolfl Make them viral on Twitter?

Hahahaha, that's assuming I have any friends :P

That's why I asked TheKittyKat, to see if they did anything "special", but apparently not.

nope
I am just as surprised

9:08 PM
Anyway, I've got to go now, BBL.

My most popular question has just 3K views... ;-)
Good riddance, @Hosch250 - fewer flags to process with you gone ;-)

@rolfl Ah, is that how flags are viewed ^^

Could someone check it?

9:12 PM
I've never trusted that user, does that count?
So don't take his comments too hard.

@Mast Maybe it counts. His "I'm so sorry I can't downvote this comment." brought me to downvoting his answer; before that I didn't.

I guess your question belongs to Code Review instead of StackOverflow... you can get better response there... — Ankit 46 secs ago

@maaartinus I checked and it turns out I had already downvoted his questions. There's something up with that guy, don't let him discourage you.

@maaartinus - his answer regarding the short-circuit of the loop makes no sense

Thank you guys. I found myself writing a stupid answer on SO tonight, so I've got unsure about my brain being on or off.
And my solution for PE 210 is both slow and wrong. ;)

@Mat'sMug If you bump a post, do it right.
How could it be improved**,** and what general advice would be useful for future projects?
That comma, I don't think it looks right there.

hmm looks right with a French mindset :\

If I remember correct, you never put a , before 'and' if the 'and' cats the two sentences together.

eh, I shouldn't have done that edit

This may have helped with the views:

@Mast That's wrong.

@nhgrif so the commas are correct then?

Without the comma and with the "and" it's a run-on sentence.
Given that it is two questions though, I'd prefer two question marks.
But yes, @Mat'sMug, the comma that @Mast was saying was wrong is actually not wrong.

yet the edit was ;-)

A: A best practice for multithreading within a function that returns a value, Swift

@CaptainObvious I think my answer for this is suitable.

@Jamal Me too, but I'm out of votes.
In this one, he has all his logic in the .h file, which I don't like: codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/94939/…
I would write an answer, but I'm capped.
I'll write one later, if someone hasn't covered that.

I'm still not sure about the exception-handling. I feel that it's a little overkill, especially if the recruiter doesn't like a solution that throws.

That could be an issue - it just crashes the program.
Even if I couldn't fix the issue (he can, there), I would exit gracefully.
Well, actually, he is right to throw, but he should also catch.

From the same function? Probably not, unless you try to return some default value.

11:05 PM
No, not in the same function.

He would probably have to catch in main(), but it wasn't provided.

I missing something (as usual).
How did you learn C++?
Did you take a class from the U?

As for Fibonacci, yes, it shouldn't all be in the header.
Yes, that's where I've started.

Q: Simple cat in Rust

KnyghtI'm learning Rust, from a Python background, and while I've used languages like C and C++ in the (distant) past, system languages aren't really my specialty. I would just like to know if my code is sane, if I seem to have the principles roughly right, but I'd be happy to hear any improvements at...

I started with C++ too, with Bjarne's book - learned a lot of good points there.
Then, I went to write a WPF app, and was told to use C#.
So, I'm focusing on C# now.

11:07 PM
After that, I got most of my experience from CR (particularly Loki).

Me too - I can't believe how terrible my code was before I joined CR.

Another thing is that the Fib solution may not even need to be a class.

Holy crap, I just discovered a Google easter egg.

@EthanBierlein ?

@Hosch250 Go search "webdriver torso" in google.
And then look where the logo should be

What's up with it?
What in the world is up?

Perhaps you could stop posting these questions until your current ones are reviewed; otherwise, reviewers may just tell you the same things for each question. — Hosch250 5 secs ago
No, I meant that ^^

@Hosch250 Indeed. That DP question could use a lot of work otherwise.

Philo5.h #ifndef PHILO5_H_ #define PHILO5_H_ //Number of philosophers const int PHIL_COUNT = 5; //How many time...

11:15 PM
Yeah, this one...

I need to solve that.

I only got a brief explanation of this from my OS class. We never even needed to implement it.

I was taught about blocking and resources and deadlock/livelock in an OS Concepts class last fall.
That was the most interesting class I ever took, and the one I learned the most from too.

Agreed. It's also one of the hardest at my school, and I made a B.

It was a complete mess - a new teacher taught it and tested us on things he didn't teach us.
I took an A-.

11:18 PM
But we did very little coding.

Same here - mostly concepts.
One test, we had 15 minutes to solve some 30 questions, or something like that, and half of them were written answers and some involved coding.

My final was surprisingly easier than the previous tests, though the last question involved a "new" synchronization problem.

The class was taught using Java when we weren't using pseudocode, and we were tested on Java particulars that weren't covered, and Python particulars...
Several times I had to write to the teacher and ask him to re-administer the tests (and I wasn't the only one, from class emails he sent out).

I just wrote my code in C99.

Wheee! I'm learning Go!

11:22 PM
I used pseudocode.

Hey @ all

@Phrancis yo

Hello @Phrancis

What's the good word today?

Go
At least for me.
We also had a spammer this morning.
The deleted answer on my question here was posted numerous other places.

11:34 PM
Hahahaha
class tiger():
  def __init__(self, arguments):
    #do stuff

ikr. He probably has an answer ban.

My sister (or is it syster?) has a spammer bugging her.

@Phrancis "It's more than good, it's great!"

@Hosch250 That sucks.

@Hosch250 Depends if your sister is also a sysadmin, then syster would be a nice shorthand.

11:37 PM
It does.
Nah, my U wants me to be a sysadmin.

@Hosch250 Wow...

For them, or in general?

I'm going to ask my advisor if I can take the SE internship instead of the ITM internship.
In general - I'm an IT student.
I'm not holding my breath, though.

Guessing you're not as much of a fan of the higher-level IT Management type work and would rather just write code, eh?

Yup.
Higher level my eye - they wouldn't be there if we didn't put them there.
Maybe they are the kings, but we are the kingmakers.

11:41 PM
The company I applied for a SofTech position heavily uses C#/T-SQL stack so if I get the job there I might start learning C# :)

OK.

I wonder if they use LINQ... Surely they do, but I hear their business logic are very largely on the DB end
They design software for medical care businesses and such

LINQ is great for databases.

So I hear

Lazy evaluation and all that.

11:44 PM
Friend of mine that's a DB programmer at that company didn't know what LINQ was -.-

But his job is largely to optimize, clean up and write procedures, views, table-valued functions and all that, and he's been working on multithreading T-SQL which is quite impressive. You can do that with T-SQL 2014 I think.

Whoa.

I think your last sentence sums it up. If you can't stand the copy-paste, maybe use a container to manage your vectors. I already had a stab at one here, if you want some ideas. — Quentin 56 secs ago
