@skiwi I think 5 million would be a good start on the research team and equipment.
Or... just wait until Google figures it out.
That's probably cheaper and faster anyway.

I don't think it's that bad.. but surely not easy

lol. I've no idea.
A friend of mind works at a certain space agency. I posted an article on the facebooks about how they were looking for programmers to develop software to detect near near earth objects because I thought it was cool.

My friend responded by telling me that I should give it a shot.
I had to kindly explain to him that I am simply not as smart as he gives me credit for.

@200_success Wow, nice

@200_success That's pretty cool.

The interesting part is that I think that recognizing anything in an image is entirely possible

10:40 AM
> to be able to recognize more than 1000 things in images using deep convolutional neural nets.

In theory

deeply convolutional

Practice is that neural networks would require tons of nodes and that's simply not feasible (our brains do a far better job though), and they need training data as well, but humans also need that

Yeah, but that's code review process and I'm talking about merging here. So maybe to put it another way I want to be notified if something has changed in the code in particular files since the time I branched out instead of manually check it every time. — Maximus 42 secs ago

I think it is important to clear up that what I have done is just rambled about the ideals and goals (as I personally see them) of code review as a site. I am fully aware that the reality is a lot more messy. I am not trying to use the ramblings as a "meter" against which questions are closed, or voted on. Rather, it is a way for me to assess whether site policy discussions are aligned with the goals and values of the site, or whether the topics being discussed would hinder or devalue the site — rolfl ♦ 4 mins ago

Most likely, code for your task will implement several patterns, working together. Seems like more constructive way to go is to write sketch of a code and post it to codereview.SE, or something like that. In short -- start with a code snippet. — Victor Sorokin 50 secs ago

Jesse C. SlicerA little over a year ago, I asked this question. i just got told off by a third party for refactoring their spaghetti code
they were essentially doing this

@DanPantry worth it
2

class ShareSvc {
  public object Data { get; set; }
  public static ShareSvc instance;
}

class PrototypeCtrl {
  public PrototypeCtrl() {
    Watch(ShareSvc.instance.Data, data => this.data = data);
  }
}

hi there!

2:38 PM
email from them after I refactored this into something not grotesque:

Why?

Dan, thanks

I want to ask you about one thing. If you decide to do next refactoring, please tell me in advance. Sometimes I don't see any strong reason to do this changes.

How about a pretty strong reason to ever use an object type?

It is translated from typescript, btu they were usin the any type which is essentially the object type
essentiallyl, I had to tell the application that the user wanted to see a different company
Now, being this is web based, you'd think we would just browse to /company/id, right?
Nope, instead they wanted me to publish an event searchclick which would then be caught byt he parent class and then rebroadcast out as searchclick across the ENTIRE application
When I turned my nose up at this they came up with ShareSvc, where I am to put the company on a singleton object and they watch the ShareSvc for changes
So I just said fuck it and made a prototype of my own to show how it could be done with URLs, haven't actually changed their code all that much, and I got that email back lol
I should paraphrase some of their code and post it for code review lol

People think spaghetti code is job safety

2:46 PM
^^

lol
2

@JaDogg Unfortunately, they're right.

This was the old part of their code that I would have to use to set the'next' company:
    var companyIndex = 0;
    $scope.GetCompany(companyIndex);
    $scope.NextCompany = function () {
        this.GetCompany(++companyIndex);
    };
yeah, I would have to find the implementation of GetCompany and then put the next company in a 'queue' so the next time you hit a button it would increment companyIndex
I think I should mention this is the asme company that would load up an admin page before checking if you were logged in or not and then hastily redirecting you away from it if you weren't logged in on the client side..
/rant over
i think i will do a blog post on spaghetti code = job security

@DanPantry Ping me with the link, to that blog post if you write it.

kapil.thakarI tried to develop a new way to check if a number is divisible by 9. I have written my code and it is working fine. I'm not allowed to use *,/ and %. int isDivby9(int x) { int status = 0; int divby8 = 0; int orgx = x; if(x>=9) { divby8 = x >> 3; ...

@Malachi lol

while ( (i += divisor) < number);

@Edenia I did not know that, is that a C thing, or do you think that I can do that in C# as well?

Lol.. I don't even like C#.
So I can not say.

@Edenia lol, I like it better than VB

3:43 PM
Of course you could like it.. it is easy. But.. unfortunately ..doesn't make you a programmer at all.

@Edenia thems are fighting words
if you write code you are a programmer, i think we should be above languages wars
except VB because fk VB
2

what about LOLCODE?

Everyone has their own opinion. But hey people keep discovering that Microsoft is a complete pile of trampled dog shit.
The esoteric one? ;d
I've heard of it.

@Edenia C# probably the best thing to come out of Microsoft

Sure. Tell me why.
You need to argument it though..

3:45 PM
the burden of proof is on the accuser
2

@Edenia we have some LOLCODE questions here, as well as BrainF*ck
@DanPantry agreed

I dont follow the logic that microsoft is terrible therefore anyone who uses C# is not a programmer.
Or rather, anyone who only knows C# is not a "real" programmer.
obligatory

Of course he is not a (real)programmer. Because C# does all the programming for you. What you actually do is CODING.
People that know C already know that too.
So no.. I am not biased.

Are you implying that you need to manage memory to be a "real" programmer?

C# under .NET because there is a monoproject
Not only memory.

3:48 PM
Now i'm really confused are you saying that C# .NET is bad but C# mono is not?

C# under .NET is heavy, horrifically slow, non-portable..
C# mono is a bit better.

I'm confused.
your runtime being heavy, horrifically slow and non-portable makes you a bad programmer because it does all of the programming for you?
wat?
I don't see this being a constructive discussion but I just can't follow the logic that If you do C# .NET you are not a real programmer, if you do C# Mono you are slightly better than C# .NET scrubs, and C++/C are the master race

No.. this is just a language qualification. You are not good, because C# does everything for you and you have no clue of memory management, hardware management.. you don't even know how sockets work.
C# has everything for you.
The GUI is very restrictive.. C# is also not as much powerful as C is.

I know a fair amount of that stuff but my job still requires me to use C#.

You can not create OS with C#. But with C you can.

3:51 PM
I think you're just being a pedant now.

C# is more like a tool.

I don't need to create an OS.
I do know C++ and C#, and I do know memory management, hardware management and sockets.
I don't think that only knowing C# would make me a "coder"
And if it did, someone needs to tell my boss because everything here is coded in C# / .NET.

If that's true.. then consider yourself a potential programmer (unless you already have that diploma)

I do not have a diploma, no.

Let me guess.. you live in the US.. ?

3:52 PM
No, I'm British.
I self taught myself everything I know and have done so for about 8 years now.
3

@Edenia Is that why C# programmers are more efficient?

No they are not. These who claim theirself as good.. are usually limited to a Fiesta Online (a private server)

I think it is more about what needs to be done.

@Edenia you can create an OS in C but you can write very efficient low level drivers in ASM, much more efficient than C.

Yes.

3:54 PM
So therefore C is heavy and bloated and does everything for you because it has all of these abstractions.
ASM makes you a real programmer.
Do you see the problem with that logic?

Q: Python: optimization for calculating statistics

JNevensI have collected a large amount of data about the train network in my country. Now, I am writing some code that calculates the average amount of delay on the entire train network, for each day, in a given period of time. Important to note: every train has a unique train-number. Each train-number ...

Yes it does.
ASM does make you a real programmer.

Well, you're welcome to tell me what makes me a real programmer all you want. I'll just sit here and earn money for actual writing real life programs in C#/JavaScript

ASM would make Rubberduck (written in C#) able to browse, wrap and expose a VBA stack trace API.
I'm not a real programmer then

I will link this XKCD again

3:55 PM
@Edenia C# is written on top of C, so it can do everything that C can do, how is it not as powerful?

I will tell you. If we both take a race. Creatign a super complex program.

Yeah, you will win, if you create a super complex program.
but you wouldn't use C# for efficiency constrained situations.

I use C# because I ♥ it

Microsoft vs GNOME (Gnome-suported)

3:56 PM
I think the sign of a real programmer is knowing which tool to use, instead of trying to argue that everything should be done with the One Real Tool

I wouldn't be surprised if C# won for the super complex program because you wouldn't have to worry about memory management.
2

where is the Java Monkey?

lol

A super complex program should be written in C because yes, it's faster.

I suppose Java isn't a real language either?

3:56 PM
"You will not have to worry" Exactly this makes you a bad programmer :(

or Python?

Anyway, ask @nhgrif about it - he is writing an ERP in .NET.

They are. Especially Python.

But most programs in the real world do not need that kind of performance.

Python and Java are real but C# is not?

3:57 PM
^ wat

He does know memory management, and a lot of other related things too.

I know memory management. I just don't need to worry about it.

C# is real. Just as toy you can play with.

In the same way that I could write out long division or I could use a calculator.

and Java isn't?

3:58 PM
Java is good. The only downside is that it is obviously slower.

If I got an edge case rounding error I would have to resort to doing it the long way. but otherwise I would use the calculator because it's faster, 99% of the time.
You did just say that C# .NEt is terrible because it's slow.

This discussion is useless and annoying

Java was written on top of C the same as C# which just came later

Except MS ruins w/e it grabs.
It ruined skype.. so as everything they bought or dev.
