@JeroenVannevel My disk speed tends to do that.

love that feeling <3

This might fare better on code review - it is too broken for SO. Consider: if(userInput >= 0 || userInput <= 50) User input of 123456 will pass this, and it will also pass if (userInput < 0 || userInput > 50)John3136 23 secs ago
@John3136 -> Broken Code is off-topic for Code Review. — Quill 1 min ago

@Quill, then I contend that it is off topic everywhere and have voted accordingly. — John3136 1 min ago
he's 15k rep and voting broken code off-topic on SO...
@Phrancis hi
Yo @Phrancis, what do you think of the other answer to my FizzBuzz question: codereview.stackexchange.com/a/113195

Q: Best way to represent multiple JSON response in a REST service?

davidI am working on a REST service in which I am trying to come up with a JSON response that I am supposed to return back. Below is the design I am able to come up with in which each line is a response for each request so we have total three response for three request wrapped around an array. In thi...

@Quill Pretty good, I had forgotten that recursive CTE trick, I need to relearn to use that regularly
So, this is not very good. Working from home today because I got sick from what appears to be food poisoning. I queued up the BizTalk job from earlier today, then I had to remote into a Windows server so I could queue up the job... then it froze / (Not Responding)
So I have no freaking clue if it worked or not. #Fun

ouch, well you can at least enjoy the 9k milestone :P

Someone trying to diss me: ;-) ?
I'm inclined to let it go through as 1 question. The code volume is small, and the only person who really suffers is you (with reduced votes in total). — rolfl Dec 15 '14 at 0:18

12:32 AM
Hmmm 4 questions in 1. Is it still Black Friday somewhere? Or is there a hat-for-that? ;-) — rolfl Dec 15 '14 at 0:13
Did someone say HATS??!??!?

Rolfl is aiming for eternal glory with the next hat-hunt.

Well, the question that comment is on, is in the close-review queue, and given that just now I said:

Now, we have this "murky" situation.... it's a mess.... but, you all lose.
I guess the inconsistencies and forgetfulness of monkeyness is OK.

What the heck happened in chat a couple of hours ago anyway? There was a mod fest without flags but still something was going wrong?

@Mast EBBrown's Euler1-5 question got flagged as too broad
and a discussion erupted about questions with multiple solutions to euler problems

Is that all?

12:38 AM
a little name calling (nothing to flag about)
meta'd it, and it was fine

So we just had an ordinary scope conflict. Nothing new there.

pretty much
it just went a little overboard

Thanks for the heads up :-)

I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because it is asking for review and opinion, and could be handled better on codereview.stackexchange.comStephen P 15 secs ago

everyone who was discussing it was in chat, so it went a little casual, instead of immediately taking it to meta
but yeah...

@TopinFrassi you still around?

So basically there were a lot of people being less constructive than they could've been.
It can't be paradise all days of the year.

What @Mast is saying is that we're all very dissapointed in you guys
shame

I love how the mods kept posting external content to try and diffuse

Q: A closable footer bar with a floating info box

CarcigenicateI wrote this page with the goal in mind of having a closable footer that runs along the bottom of the page that can be closed, and has a floating info box that appears when the footer is hovered over. I'm just learning JS, HTML and CSS now, so I'd appreciate any critiques on style. Am I doing an...

A whole week!? I'm not that patient.
Hmm... It seems I missed some sort of drama.

@RubberDuck Yeah. I missed most of it while it was going on
Was too busy being sick and breaking things :)

@mjolka Kinda, yeah :p

I don't know what to make of this

obviously new to CR

1:07 AM
@TopinFrassi bit of a problem with InterceptorMessage in your question

tell him why it's not appreciated

this is how i got it to compile

don't just downvote

public class InterceptorMessage
{
    public InterceptorMessage(object target, IMethodMessage message)
    {
        Target = target;
        Message = message;
    }

    public object Target { get; }
    public IMethodMessage Message { get; }
}

I didn't touch the post at all.
It came up as a LQ in the review queue.

1:08 AM
@mjolka Oops. I'm sorry. See that's code I have at work, and I didn't have it home when you made me realize I didn't post it on review..

@JeroenVannevel What? Why not?

@SirPython I made a comment and flagged, I think it should be a comment

@mjolka I'll edit my question to make that fine!

Hey @nhgrif how are you?

@TopinFrassi also i tried to add a class, SomeClass3 and mirror that as well as SomeClass2 but it broke things. not sure if that use case is meant to be supported

1:10 AM
@mjolka What was the use case? :p Maybe I should delete the question until I'm at work so I can get the whole code. That would make it less awkward ahah

@nhgrif Obviously he's adding that answer in good faith as a new user and he seems to have the knowledge to back up a more substantial one. You could either downvote and result in a potentially good contributor to walk away or spend a few more moment to tell him CR appreciates more fleshed-out answers

If you're looking for other options then this is the place :) — GregoryHouseMD 11 secs ago

Hmm... Now that I'm catching up on the drama, I'm second guessing my feeling that Zak's question was too broad.
That question had an over-arching theme...

@TopinFrassi i'm putting together an example, easier to explain that way

@mjolka Cool!

1:11 AM
@JeroenVannevel I don't mind your recommendation to leave a comment (I did, even if it wasn't the best). But we shouldn't apply such subjective logic to up & down voting.
Up & down voting stands to signify one thing and one thing only. Is this post (question or answer) a good post?

What else is voting but subjective?

We shouldn't add the unnecessary complication of "Is this user new?"
What happens a year from now when that post is still there, he never improved it, but now he has 10k rep?
And we left that post at 0 score because it was made when he was new.

I think there's a way to apply a certain degree of objectivity with voting, if one is careful about it. But we all have our biases, of course.

I'm not saying it should be a definite rule but the people in this room are the ones that care about CR's image and the community's contribution to it. IMO, these are the ones that should (or want to) apply some extra considerations

It's a bad post and it should be downvoted. We should take the time to offer helpful tips in the comment because he is new (and if he weren't new, he should know why he's getting downvoted).

1:13 AM

The extra consideration is whether or not to leave a helpful, constructive comment to explain the downvotes.

Eh... Idk. I've gotten some down votes that mystified me.

The downvotes teach the lesson that answers like this are not appropriate here.
@RubberDuck I have too.

I always wish for comments, because sometimes I just don't understand why.

Honestly, it'd be nice if all downvotes were explained, but it's especially nice for new users.

1:14 AM
@nhgrif Thanks for catching that blatant mistake on my meta answer. It's been a long day.

Personally I don't really care since I'm not involved with any of that. But I do get annoyed when I see people downvote new potentially good contributors and then complain that CR doesn't get enough traction with mainstream contributors (not singling anyone out here, just a general observation)

I'd like to know why because that's how I learn.

@mjolka I don't have Linqpad :/

I don't mind the downvotes. Just the lack of an accompanying comment in this particular kind of scenario

@TopinFrassi you should!

1:16 AM
@RubberDuck I've heard a lot about that. I'll go check the documentation!

@mjolka That looks complicated

Can't install Linqpad on my mac D:

I opened it with Sublime Text, I think maybe even TextEdit should be able to open it
Although, I'm not sure it's a great practice to link files with executable code in them in chat

I've paid 80€ for a yearly linqpad license
that's how good it is

What is linqpad for?

1:20 AM
@Phrancis Yup, opened it with a normal text editor! :)

> LINQPad is not just for LINQ queries, but any C#/F#/VB expression, statement block or program. Put an end to those hundreds of Visual Studio Console projects cluttering your source folder and join the revolution of LINQPad scripters and incremental developers.

Reference your own assemblies and NuGet packages. Prototype your ideas in LINQPad and then paste working code into Visual Studio. Or call your scripts directly from the command-line.

Experience LINQPad’s rich output formatting, optional debugger and autocompletion, and the magic of dynamic development and instant feedback!
80% of the C# I write is in LINQPad

@mjolka Did this scenario work? If your assertions passed, yeah that's the expected behavior!

@TopinFrassi the first assert failed

Weird.. Ok, I'll delete the question temporarily, to test it a little more before I put it on review
Thanks though! (Unless you want to post an answer anyway I won't delete the answer, but for now that would make sense!)

@TopinFrassi i won't post an answer, but thanks anyway

I'm a fan too @JeroenVannevel and that's basically how I use it. Mocking up quick prototypes.

Q: Rails conditional sorting based on params

Thomas TaylorThe following code sorts the current users bid model items based on a param condition :bid_status. It starts to get messy when checking if the project space (:real_property_sale_project) :failed_date is .present? or .nil? to exclude certain items from the returned results. How can I improve this?...

Q: Non-curses pager in C

Anonymous ShadowI have written a pager in C that is supposed to be used in systems where curses is not installed (or broken). It can also be used as a system-wide pager, it works with man pages. I want to spot any portability or output problems, as there may be some due to the dependence on buffered input: #inc...

1:52 AM
Is it considered a review if you are only pointing a bug/problem in the OP's code?

yes

Regarding reputation. Is it possible to see when one looses upvotes?

I know, that wasn't my question though: I was wondering if a review where I only pointed out bugs would be okay.
(as in, would it be well received)

@holroy your reputation page should show the rep losses by post

1:56 AM
@SirPython It seems like it depends on the mood of the one passing by!

@SirPython i've done that recently and got a few upvotes for it, so i think you're safe

@Quill I'm not talking about downvotes, but loosing upvotes by someone changing their mind...

Why wasn't I invited to the edit war? :P

@holroy You would know. I got a couple of "unupvotes" recently.

@holroy That's the same page cr.se/users/userid?tab=reputation
It will show -10s, IIRC, otherwise remember your rep

1:58 AM
@SirPython I think it should be well received as you are pointing out something crucial on the code in question. And the guidelines indicates that not all answers needs to be complete, under which this would fall

These are good points. Thanks for the answer @holroy and @mjolka.

@TheCoffeeCup Hmm... I feel that it has happened, but I can't see it in the reputation tab. And it has happened more than once...

@TheCoffeeCup there's around 90000 people signed up to Code Review, no need to point fingers
@holroy I wouldn't worry too much about it, there's always the next review

@Quill Point what fingers?

On a lighter note: I have exactly 5100 rep.

2:00 AM
@TheCoffeeCup it seemed like you were pointing a finger at @holroy
@EBrown nice

@Quill I wasn't.
How was that inferred?

@Quill I'm not neccessarily interested in who un-upvoted me (or downvoted me), but sometimes my reputation goes down and I don't see why it did so. I.e. I was just above 4.7K, and now I'm back below again.

ok, just checking :-)

@TheCoffeeCup I didn't take it as pointing finger, either!

@holroy write more reviews then

2:01 AM
@EBrown next milestone, 5555 :)

@Mat'sMug I go by hundreds, first. :)
Looking at the edit history on my question, makes me giggle.

@Quill I'm trying!!!

@Mat'sMug are you a daft punk fan? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…

@EBrown I beat you by 38 :)

@EBrown I have exactly 6200 rep

2:02 AM
@EBrown It has taken off, so to speak!

I'm slowly closing in on Loki, approaching spot #4 on the top row :)

I'm 16 rep from being on page 2. GAH

@TheCoffeeCup Do you think whether the un-upvote displays is dependent on your own reputation?

@holroy no, I got similar ones when I was 4K rep too.

hmmm... Strange...
Thanks Santa! :-)

2:04 AM
@Mat'sMug 100 rep away!

@Mat'sMug That is kind of cool! Loads of respect for that!!!
Kind of fun looking at the list of users just now. You have two distinct groups when corelating this chat room and the list. Those at the very top, and those of us around 5K...

lol, thanks! ..but Loki remains well beyond my skills

my plan is to get to 10k over the christmas holidays

@Quill Hard-to-reach goal, IMO. I can never get rep that fast.

2:10 AM
@mjolka Those two identities are extremely helpful! Thanks for finding them! :)

@EBrown np :)

I'm not doubting your ability, I'm comparing your goal to my ability (a pathetic one) to earn rep.

@TheCoffeeCup perhaps, I'm planning to relearn C# and read Jon Skeet's C# book while I'm at it, so I might have a few questions

@Quill I see. I just started learning ActionScript today.

I used to write ActionScript 3, 4 years ago, I think...
It's kinda like JavaScript

2:12 AM
@Quill I compare it more to Java.
Love the fact that it has OOP, unlike JavaScript.

it has OOP? o.O

@Quill so does
2

Javascript has oop

@Mat'sMug yep.

2:14 AM
you're supposed to tag that, and I'm really tempted to create a library for PHP called that so I can use that tag here

@JeroenVannevel I didn't know that.

@Quill I'd tag it.

@Quill I dare you!

So I broke again.

@EBrown Or is it F# breaking you? ;)

2:16 AM
@Phrancis D. All of the above.

I broke markdown

Formatting goes outside the brackets

I don't think tags can be part of a hyperlink

Also, tags not permitted in links, too many brackets

they're already links

2:18 AM
markdown and I have a complicated relationship
^ you can
[![]()]()

[tag:phpoop]: [The contraction of the two gave birth to PHPOOP... only in the chatroom don't you dare actually create that tag!](http://meta.codereview.stackexchange.com/a/2391)

show me up then phrancis, whatever

lol

Man, I'm actually shocked I got that much input on 5 LoC.

@EBrown It'll be interesting to see if you get the same kind of input on the next euler problem. I think this one was bound to get some attraction related to actions earlier on...

2:29 AM
@holroy The next one is substantially longer.
The problem is, I'm not entirely certain why my response to Problem 7 works.

Sounds promising...

Well, I'm a bit confused on Seq.unfold and why it's working.
But, I think I'm starting to get it.

Q: Bracket Pair Validation

Jae BradleyValidate that the following bracket pairs [], {}, () open and close successfully in a candidate String. Q: Non-curses pager in C (revision 2)

Anonymous ShadowIn this revision I've fixed reading from stdin, and also tried to minimise the damage caused by typing additional characters. You might want to see my original post on this. #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> /* * A very SIMPLE pager that does not require curses. If your curses library * ...

@CaptainObvious well that was fast!
@SirPython s/you're code/your code/

Gah, I'm not thinking functionally enough.

2:40 AM
@EBrown Starred because apparently I'm the only who realized that was a reference to multiple choice questions.

LOL ;)

@Mat'sMug Are you sure? His name is SirPython, so maybe he doesn't really exist, but is actually a piece of code? :-)

huh

LOL:

(removed)

2:44 AM

@Hosch250 Or instant flat tire...
2

@holroy Did you read the response?

"Did I use the wrong screws?" lol
6

@Hosch250 Nope... Did now... And it wasn't surprising...

I hope they didn't really try that.
If they are that stupid, they deserve the cost of a new tire.

2:47 AM
Well doesn't look photopshopped to me

No...

"Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." - Einstein
2

I have a hard time believing someone could be that stupid, though.
Where is the sandbox?

@Hosch250 I don't. I went to school with a lot of these people.

I want to test a chat feature out.
@EBrown I feel sorry for you.
They deserve everything they get, though.
I bet we could trick them into jumping off the edge of a 200m+ cliff.

2:49 AM
My dad told me a story about this woman he met on his last business trip, she had never seen ice on a windshield before.

(No, I won't try it.)
Well, a lot of Southerners don't, simply because it isn't a problem for them.

She asked him: "what do you do with the ice?" He says: "you mean from the machine?" "No, when it gets on your window."

Scrap/melt it off?

Apparently the guy at the motel front-desk gave her the answer.

I've seen it, but I don't know how to handle it. Wouldn't scraping scratch the window?
(You see, I've just been a passenger in winter driving.)

2:51 AM

Nah, those hard plastic scrapers usually don't scratch windows unless you go really hardcore

@Phrancis I'll hold you liable if I scratch my window.

you'll break the scraper before you do anything bad to your window

Though sometimes it can be wise to get some hot water and pour it on first, to loosen it

I don't want to melt my window ;P

2:52 AM
You can use quite a lot of force before damaging the window, if you just do it correctly.

I wouldn't be so worried about melting the glass with hot water buddy ;)

May I suggest Code Review? They're nice there and will help you out with a lot more than just basic performance. — Veedrac 55 secs ago

just don't punch a frozen window and you'll do great

@holroy Thanks.

Hot water is a bad idea in general to thaw ice. It does something with the outer layer, and the inner layer can actually get more stuck. In addition you can cause other effects due to the difference between hot and cold areas.

2:53 AM
@Mat'sMug Can I punch a not-frozen one?
I'll hold you liable if I cut my hand/arm.
(No, I won't try it, so you won't have to worry about lawyer fees.)

I think you'd probably be mostly looking at a broken hand

Yeah, I know.

Use a good ice scraper, and if allowed let the car run with the heater on high settings. Within minutes you can remove most of the ice almost without any work at all.

My mom knew someone who punched through her car window.
She asked him why, and he blubbered that he cut his hand.

@Duga Hah... You wish! ;-)

2:55 AM
Veedrac is on here.

@Hosch250 nevermind, you guys don't get the -30's we do ;-)

@Mat'sMug Fahrenheit or Celsius?

We do sometimes, but usually not a whole lot of them.
@holroy Doesn't matter much at this point seeing they merge at -40.

Then it's getting a little bit colder than here in Norway as well.

2:56 AM
-30C == -22F and -30F == -34.4444...C.

@Hosch250 I'm too used to centigrades that I have a bit of a problem relating to Fahrenheit...

@holroy Try Bing: bing.com/…
It has a converter built-in.

So this morning I got a mocha energy drink from the gas station down the road, and an hour later subsequently became sick from food poisoning... what would you all do? Should I file a complaint?

*so does google

(Yeah, I know - Google does too.)

2:57 AM
it's the wind chill factor really

@Mat'sMug I've heard cars can't feel windchills.

turns a -18 into a -42

@Phrancis how many / much of it have you drank

@Phrancis Don't get another one.

The whole can. It didn't taste, smell or anything that could hint at being bad

2:58 AM
@Hosch250 I don't like Bing... Changes it away again every time Windows or Microsoft has done an update, and changed it back....

if you've drunk more than the 'suggested amount' (which should be on the back or online) than you can't really do anything, except a friendly complaint
@holroy meanwhile google changes their font every three years and everybody freaks out

Well, I don't know. I'd kind of expect to get food poisoning from that kind of drink.

Ah, I'd be willing to bet the suggested amount is half a can, figures

probably around a third
A serving, I'd believe they're called

Actually, I don't want you guys to use Bing.

2:59 AM
I'd gotten them from there many times before, never had any problem :\
