9:00 PM

yeay, thanks Santas!

Is Geheugen your RAM?

@skiwi Oh how I love the dutch language!
Kladblok :D

@Phrancis Ah yes

In Swedish, we could say "Kladdblock", but Notepad is called "Anteckningar" (Notes)

9:01 PM
5,8/15,9 GB in use atm

@SimonAndréForsberg Sounds close to "Aantekeningen"
@SimonAndréForsberg No, RAM :)

@skiwi yup :)

@SimonAndréForsberg both sound pretty funny, actually ;)
at first I mistakenly read "Anteck ninja"
3

Damn, 16 GB RAM that is a good PC.

9:03 PM
(very underserving for the pretty dumb notepad)

@janos then you should hear the rest of our languages :)

and suddenly, @janos' answer rises to the top

@Phrancis I want more :(

user image
2
@Phrancis Ouch yeah... Intel Core 2 Duo :(

9:06 PM
This laptop doesn't look very impressive, yet I've never had any problem with it in at least 6 years

If I were to build a PC right now I'd go for newest Intel i7 and 32GB DDR4 RAM

Never buying a Windows machine again

My laptop is slow in my opinion, so I just use it as tool to connect to my desktop home

@skiwi that goes on my twitter in a sec ;)

@skiwi So typical German :)

9:07 PM
German is one of the most aggressive languages.

I find German to sound beautiful, when said by a soft-spoken lady reading poetry. Otherwise, sounds pretty abrasive.

totally agree @Phrancis

But on my PC I also run som eheavy games from time to time, hence it needs to be a good one

On my PC I don't run heavy games, I run heavy code.
2

My cat just tripped the electric cord to my expensive sound card... '~'

9:10 PM
And yet my stationary computer is about as good as @Phrancis' laptop
@Phrancis Ouch

@Phrancis That's strange... Aren't cats normally super careful and never hit anything?

Not this one. He's a fat, clumsy thing. But in general, yes.

Good night

Bye skiwi

Bye skiwi
@Phrancis ... and that's a bad thing?

9:16 PM
Yeah. He's about as fast at escaping as most cats, but he's clumsy as a puppy. He breaks things pretty regularly.
He's kind of mean, too. But so are most cats.
Here is his nonchalant mug... name is Phantom.

Back, odd things happening, @Simon, been afk for real-life things

Nice name. He does look pretty badass

@rolfl Odd things happening IRL or in code?

IRL, and in other chat areas.

9:24 PM
some mod things, then 'the tree guy' came, and we've been talking about getting horses in to my back yard

tree guy? ? JavaDeveloper?

LOL

'The Tree Guys' want to charge $7000 to remove 11 trees in our back yard, using a crane and heavy equiptment.

This guy is my wife's mother's cousin..... and has a team of horses....

9:26 PM
That's a lot of do-re-mi

and will charge less than half of that, but we have to clean up the horse-sh.

oh, relatives of the mother-in-law...

Horse-sh is not that bad to clean up. Dog-sh is a lot worse

Yeah, but there's nowhere near here to stable the horses, and he's too far away to bring them for short times.

9:28 PM
Bear in mind that I live in a classic Canadian sub-division, with about 10 feet between me and the neighbour's house.

Couple guys, a shovel and a wheelbarrow (and probably a few cold beers)

Having horses in the street would be interesting.

Wait... you're in a subdivision and have eleven trees in your backyard?

@rolfl so the risk of a tree falling on the neighbor's house if you would cut down the tree the wrong way is... too high?

They would section the tree....
climb it, and rope-down the parts as they cut it.

9:29 PM
Ah, a binary tree, then!

We have 11 ash trees, and three maple trees.
All in the space of .... 40 feet by 10 feet.

(disbelief)

The ash trees are all infected with.... du dum dum.....
The emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis) is a green beetle native to Asia and Eastern Russia. Outside its native region, the emerald ash borer (also referred to as EAB) is an invasive species, and emerald ash borer infestation is highly destructive to ash trees in its introduced range. The emerald ash borer was first discovered in America in June 2002 in Michigan. It is believed to have been brought to America unintentionally in ash wood which was used to stabilize crates during shipping. == Range == The natural range of the emerald ash borer is eastern Russia, northern China, Japan, and Korea...

:(

So they are sick, and going to die in the next year or so.
it is much cheaper to bring them down before they die, apparently
and after they die, well, there's side-effects.

9:31 PM
How big are they?

Have a big bonfire.
2

The biggest is about a 3feet diameter
The smallest are about 10 inches.

Ah, the traditional lurker pops in!

5th of November is just around the corner.

5th of November?
Big Canadian holiday?

9:33 PM
Bonfire Night is an annual event dedicated to bonfires, fireworks and celebrations. Different traditions celebrate Bonfire Night on different days. Some of the most popular instances include England's Guy Fawkes Night, which is also celebrated in some Commonwealth countries; Northern Ireland's Eleventh Night, a precursor to The Twelfth; 23 June in the Republic of Ireland, sometimes known as St John's Eve, a similar bonfire tradition survives in parts of Scandinavia and is known as Walpurgis Night; in Australia, the Queen's Birthday. Several other cultures also include night-time celebration...

@rolfl if it were my money, I'd bring the horses and clean up the sh afterwards, not that big of a yard anyway

We can make it one, remember remember the 5th of november
@Phrancis Yeah, there's a bit of a problem, his time is all booked up....
He's been contracted by the city of toronto to use his horse team to clear the ash from all the urban parks.... especially the ones in conservation areas.

> a similar bonfire tradition survives in parts of Scandinavia and is known as Walpurgis Night

It's goign to keep him more than busy for the next year..? especially in winter.

we do have that. In April 30th

9:34 PM
Ah. Problematic.

the ground is frozen in winter, and it's better to fell the sections then.
The snow stops the sections from rolling as well.

And I'm guessing using a chainsaw is out of the question? Might be worth considering, at least for the smaller ones

Just don't let it spread
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burning_of_Washington

@LokiAstari hint, Wikipedia links have to be in a separate message to show up the full-size preview

9:38 PM
Ahhh. Poop.
That's tight.

That's the biggest one, there's two behind it to the left, and then the two on the right are mid-size, and there's another cluster behind.
It's more than 10-feet wide between the fence and the house.
hmmm.

Nice sun room though.

Yeah, it's great.
I rebuilt it in 2008, and have damaged my braccial tendon (think carpal tunnel), by using an impact-driver (one of those cool little battery things).

Ouch

9:44 PM
Is there much room in the "behind the camera" area?

You can see through there from the inside ... not much room. and the trees are tight.

Nice place!

THat was taken just after the renovation..... it's different.

You built that? Man that's pretty damn nice

re-built.

9:46 PM
ok. Still.
But yeah I can see your prerogative... not much room for a mistake taking down a tree...

No, it's not something I would do myself. Each pane of glass is 4' by 8', tempered, and double-glazed.
about $800 each
But, I am a very capable 'contractor', I do my own plumbing, electrical, drywall, etc.
I got help with the initial parts of the work here though, and I paid people to install the tile flooring, and granite countertop.
Otherwise, between my wife and I, we did a lot of the work ourselves.... and, 6 years later, it's still all there ;-)
@LokiAstari Costs about $1000 for the big tree, and has to be repeated every 2 years. We have 11 trees, the smaller ones are cheaper though, with the smallest 'just' $400

I would rather drop the trees now, and pay for new trees (not ash ;-)

We have very large oak trees here, it's a mess to keep the driveway/yard clean

That I can believe, are you in a seasonal climate (leaves fall?)

9:56 PM
Yeah. Indiana, USA
Acorns fall pretty much year long though

Just checked, yeah, the oak leaves can be a pain.
Acorns are good for catapaults (slingshots).
Shoot them on to the neighbour's yard.

Not to mention large branches when it storms

^^^ man, they do the funniest ones.
They have a whole tv show, and it's brilliant
And a yoube channel, @Simon ....

@rolfl I don't have such a thing as neighbor '~'

10:05 PM
Ahh, your bedroom, the dog house!

Yes, I keep a blanket and alarm clock in there
2

I am envious, I would like a larger property, but it's too expensive..... not that where I am is cheap, but I have to get to work too.

Gunpowder treason and plot. I can think of no reason the gunpowder treason should ever be forgot.

This property we're renting is unusual. It's a residential neighborhood and most houses are tightly packed (and, on the correct side of the flood wall)

I take it that your house is the flood wall?

10:09 PM
The flood wall is to the right of the last picture, and the river in front towards the 2nd-to-last picture
We don't get massive floods very often, read just about never (we're at last 100 feet above the Ohio river)
But if we did, our house would be f***ed

@rolfl yup, I know. Although I only watch those that appear on wimp.com every now and then. Like this recent one

10:28 PM
Well I finally got that fudging function to work. Now I need to make it cleaner. But, need to run an errand first. BBS. Should post a new SQL question for CR here in a bit!

Has anyone else noticed that chat now shows your local time on the messages, and not the server's time?

It always did for me... it seems?

Q: How can I refactor this if statement from a Rails controller?

Dylan RichardsThis code for my blog checks to see if tags are in the params hash. If they are, then only posts that are tagged will be paginated. Otherwise, all of the posts are paginated. class PostsController < ApplicationController def index if params[:tag] @posts = Post.tagged_with(params[:tag...

@Phrancis I'm quite sure that it showed the server time not too long ago

10:53 PM
TTGTB

Night @simon
How can I refactor this title
8 lines of code... 4 tags... Heh.

11:22 PM
insert, insert little database, how I select how you are...

11:49 PM
Hmm. I found this Pavel Stehule who answered my question on SO, on the Postgres forums I guess it's a small world
