@Mat'sMug got a min?

@Phrancis Existing answers has nothing to do with whether or not the question is on-topic.

Good point
I don't really know what to say, I know naught about assembly

A: Reading Intervals from command line

JamalSomething like this: Interval<double> i; i.lowest = 0; i.highest = 10; would suggest the use of object-construction, so simply add an initializer list: template<typename T> struct Interval { static const char sep = ':'; T lowest; T highest; Interval(T const& lowest, T const&...

And actually.... the review is only reviewing the pseudo code...
This isn't asking for a review of code actually.
It's asking for a review of pseudo-code..
The assembly code isn't his. It's code he was assigned to interpret and write a pseudo-code version of to demonstrate he is capable of understanding the Assembly code.
I voted to close

@nhgrif Ditto

Question seems okay for SO or Programmers perhaps, but he's not actually asking for a code review.

@AlexL I'm sure someone will come along and yell at you for using static methods

@DaggNabbit Oh maybe, I didn't see any reason why they need not be static >:D

1:18 AM
only if you wanted to extend it I guess
then again you use self so that shouldn't be a problem?
idk, we'll let the "never use static" pundits handle that one

@DaggNabbit That's what I'm hoping for. And if I get a really solid arguement against them, then I'll switch
Not just, "why are you using statics, they're bad and you can't debug with them"

my answer to the whole static debate is to look at redbean's excellent static facade on top of your standard objects-with-instance-methods OOP stuff

I GIVE UP
MySQL got the best of me.
I'll just crawl into my corner and make a cursor loop.

1:34 AM
@AlexL now I remember what's wrong with static there
if you want to extend it, it's not gonna work
because self does not have late binding

I could change self to static to allow late binds?

does that work?

In PHP yes

Then what's get_called_class() for

@DaggNabbit Nahhh

1:36 AM
nahhh what xD
oh that

It was a good read.

@DaggNabbit "used to retrieve a string with the name of the called class and static:: introduces its scope."

oh, got it
thought get_called_class was for LSB for some reason

I changed it, because you're right :)

@Phrancis and, you have summarily lost 1093 internet points

2:22 AM
recommending access....

But @rolfl Access > Excel no?

@Phrancis Depends.....

At least Access can do a freaking JOIN

Truth.

@Phrancis Sure, it can do a Freaking JOIN, but I want inner and outer JOINs.

2:24 AM
^^ It has those too, used them before
Also left and right join

for the win.... thanks, santas!!!

Even has a case when ... then ... else although the syntax is different (switch)
I once did a left outer join in Access and ended up fixing some 6500 records at work. @rolfl

Phrancis, databases are like drugs, but, on principle, recommending access is like suggesting people use dirty needles.... at least recommend something.... sterile.

Access is a step up from using spreadsheets as databases, but in reality, it shouldn't be used for anything.
We use it as a cheap front end to our SQL server and we shouldn't even be doing that.
@rolfl Epic. I'm bookmarking the permalink.

@rolfl @ckuhn203 from my personal experience, Access has basic SQL functionality which works fine if you're not doing anything fancy, though granted it falls short compared to SSMS.
But it serves as a semi-decent "buffer" between GP employee and DB analyst

2:30 AM
You're right @Phrancis. It's better than nothing, but I've seen way too much abuse of it.
I've been responsible for a good amount of that abuse.

And used purely for SQL, seems to get the job done, given a non-ridiculous amount of records

So long as you're not running it over a network....

^^ that

And the 2gb limit is brutal.

Uhm, this is a first for me, on CR:
@rolfl I have a problem similar to this problem that I was hoping you could advise me on. I have an unsorted list of unique numbers. I have to find two unique pairs that sum to the same value. Also, this value has to be as small as possible. Eg, the set {1, 4, 3, 2} would give 5 because (1, 4) and (2, 3) will be the pairs. If I had {1, 4, 2, 3, 30, 10, 25, 15} I would not get 40 with (25, 15) and (30, 10) because it is not the minimum possible sum. 5 is. — Ogen 5 mins ago
At least I got an upvote on that answer .... 5 min ago.

2:32 AM
Not to mention the funky syntax.

@rolfl And he created an account just to do that...

Wow. I've never seen that here.

@ckuhn203 Yes, yes indeed. Syntax is odd. But handling anywhere between 1K-50K records (from a spreadsheet, for example) is done much more easily in Access than Excel. That's sort of the scope I was talking about.
@rolfl off-topic... maybe...?

@Phrancis Yeah. I know. I'm sorry. It's just a touchy subject because I deal with years upon years of ancient Access dbs every day. I've put a ton of effort into retiring as many as possible.

Well, TTGTB 4 Me.

2:37 AM
See ya @rolfl.

@ckuhn203 I can relate, somewhat, though I did not develop. When I use Access I create a new DB, shove the data in there, write my queries to get the output, and call it a day... don't get into any VB stuff.
Bye @rolfl
Most stuff ends up back in a spreadsheet, but at least clean & tidy, to be inserted/updated via SSMS
People at my workplace have a hard time thinking outside the "Excel document" model... Just trying to comply...
Tried changing it before with zero success.

People like lists man. What can I say?

Heck, we even write SQL queries from within Excel. Great stuff.

I've had to fight with fellow devs about not structuring their databases like they're worksheets.
Normalization..... such a novel concept.

It will be the lesser idiot who goes.

But yeah, I've seen update, insert into and even delete from ran right into Production.

I do that shit on the daily.

Truncate? How about

2:51 AM

Because, ya know. Everything should be in dbo. There shouldn't even be another schema.

If you just truncate, all the apps will pretend like they're working, until you make them use OCDB

Good point.

Sec.SE's chat room
I was asking if anyone would like to review my latest code, and I got this in reply....
"@AlexL 1. Don't roll your own crypto. 2. If someone has to ask "Is this a secure line?" the answer is "No"."
Well why isn't it secure? :P

What's sec?

Sounds arrogant
I got something similar from DBA one time. I resolved I would just stick to CR going forward.

@AlexL He's got a point.

2:55 AM
Pretty much! I had to tell them it was a rewrite of someone else's code for a CR game
@ckuhn203 I understand 1. But I didn't rewrite any algorithms, just a wrapper
and 2: well why is the wrapper insecure?

@ckuhn203 how about this? update dbo.master set master_column = ( @rand() x 10000000 ) where master_column = '%'

Every database guy has a doomsday script. We joke about it like we don't, but we do. (Seriously, we don't. I'm just kidding. We'd never do something like that.)
I know @AlexL. I meant more the whole "Don't roll your own crypto." than anything.

SELECT CASE WHEN "We do" THEN "We don't" ELSE "We don't" END CASE;

I think of it this way, in a review, we point out when OP has written code to do X and Library Y has it in the bag already.

@ckuhn203 Well I completely agree with that too. In fact I don't even know how to write an algo.
It's just a wrapper class, with a little bit of personalization too it

@Phrancis Yup. Me too.

Damn nice @ckuhn203

@Phrancis Haha I think that happens. I tried to make a story to go along with it so even people unfamiliar with the language can get a little out of it

@AlexL +1 for putting some story into it, that was a nice touch

Wow, I might actually get gold before Constable (in November). Gotta keep looking for zombies.

I thought so too @AlexL. It was entertaining for me, even though I don't know a single "word" in php.

@ckuhn203 $this->sucks; <-- PHP as written by most common denominator

Incoming from the DMZ...
> We're still stuck on the "php" and "security" part.
@Phrancis Them too...

Of course most PHP (and MySQL) programmers know nothing about either
Also... JavaScript?

it's probably fair to say that about a lot of languages, though

I think you could say I can select all the users from the "users" table ;) And maybe sort them!

3:16 AM
@AlexL can you also ;drop table Students; ?

@Phrancis You misspelled my name... Robert*

Bobby*

@Yuushi I'll have to say, in my very limited experience, I agree... SELECT DISTINCT * --wtf??

@Phrancis Then again, if I was asked to write some SQL at the moment, I'd probably come up with something crap

@Yuushi Actually, I quote: "DID YOU REALLY NAME YOUR SON Robert'); DROP TABLE Students; -- ?"

3:20 AM
But.. SELECT DISTINCT * ...??????

@AlexL Yes. I did.

@Phrancis Yeah, that's pretty...special

But, it's everything..... how can it be distinct?

As in, check every column and every record to make sure everything in the result set is a distinct record compared to every other record in the result set??????

I'll name my kid: <script>alert("Robert");</script>

3:21 AM
Unless someone knows that there are duplicate records in the table.

@ckuhn203 YES.
I've had to fix a database analyst's report (I'm not a database analyst) because it had a self-join against a massive result set, and select distinct * from both sets joined... overall took at least 40 minutes to run.

@AlexL "If you don't know this stuff, you shouldn't be designing commercial web pages."

Wait, it was a temp table join

@Phrancis I remember.

To find duplicates... ever heard of where count(myColumn) > 1 ?

I don't get it.

But that's neither here nor there, though I agree with you

Congrats on silver , @nhgrif!

@ckuhn203 put it in perspective, this DB used to be all Access, they upgraded to Microsoft SQL Server about a decade ago, though many remnants from Access found their way into the SQL Server DBMS.

3:33 AM
Ahhhh. They used the import tool. No one is allowed to use it because I took the time to convince them it's a bad idea.

^^ can I go work for your company?
Hey, what happens when you concatenate SQL into VB? Is it bad?

It can be. There are other kinds of injection attacks other than SQL.
What are ya thinkin?

I'm thinking avoiding it like it's the plague... good idea?

Lol. Yeah. Good idea.

@200_success I have a general question regarding XAML.

A: qsort potential optimizations

PimgdOne thing I quickly spot is this: If your second while loop completes naturally instead of via a break, you will also exit the first while loop. Thus the last instruction executed, gt--, is unnecessary. Let's look at the execution paths: //BEGINLOOPS while (lt <= gt) { if (a[pivot] > a[lt]...

Old Badman GreyI wrote an irc bot in java using Pircbot for use in twitch(.tv) chat. It is intended to be ran locally and to only be connected to one channel at a time. When it is connected to my channel, it will take song requests for mp3s in my music directory. There is a songlist on a google site. Otherwise ...

@Pimgd in fact you can probably extract the whole structure to some Dictionary<String, Runnable>
then statically define the methods you need to run and be over with it

Yeah but my problem was in AS3 and I don't have runnables there
Additionally I had stuff like "if x but not y in string", "starts with x", "ends with x", "contains uneven count of x" and such.

Q: Selecting template from database using organization ids

skiwiThis is my first SQL post over here, and in fact, I have more or less the experience of a regular SQL programmer, except that the task at hand this time was way harder than normal. I am expecting, hoping and almost demanding a better version of my code, because my version is really bad, but I do...

Nobody other than @Phrancis wants to try?

@skiwi seems like it.
sql is not my thing either way. maybe 200 or the monkey could say some more.
or mat and malachi..

sql isn't my thing either
but I had no choice :)
YOu still have a choice, so it's wise to stay away from it
I should test my query on like 100K rows of data
but figuring out how to easily loop through sql statements or anything

What's the double substring index for?

@Pimgd Say you have 'a, b, c'
First one with index 2 gets 'a, b'
then with index -1 you get 'b'
Gotta go, back later

Feels so good to debug succesfully
Had an UnauthorizedAccessException on a databasefile
installed Process Explorer to look for handles
Found a handle on a database connection
changed the library's source code (which are just .cs files) to explose it's Close() method to the public
and the handle now dissapears as it should!

That doesn't sound like debugging
that sounds like hacking

Unless it's your library

It's not, it's just a pretty crappy library
but it's the only option
It's the SQLite-net library which is the best there is on WinRT
but there are just a handful of choices and this is the least bad
I've seen it's also recommended for Xamarin. Yay.

@skiwi Can't you just do something like this:
select templateid
from template_organizations
where organizationid in (1003, 1005, 999)
group by templateid having count(templateid) = 3;
and insert the (1003, 1005, 999) and the 3 from whatever code fires off the query?
