Also much easier to prevent syntax errors like he had, I'd be willing to bet that his code wouldn't work and MySQL would give him "unknown column" error or some such.

@skiwi There is actually not a SE site about legal stuff unfortunately. I think many people have something against giving legal advice over the web. I appreciate your thoughts do. Hopefully there's no danger at all about it.
@Mat'sMug Well done! I'm glad that while I take it slow, others are still working!

Thanks Santa!

ho ho ho

Hehe .... how is it that I am taking it slow, and still working ... at the same time ?

I closed 3 tickets today at work, ..and rep-capped on CR. WTF's going on?

I am so bad at multitasking it's silly. My wife is amazing though.

multitasking...

She can watch TV, write e-mails, cook a meal, and deal with kids ... all seemingly at the same time, and when I say "kids, be quiet, I can't hear TV, Lee what was that they said?" She'll be able to tell me word-for-word.

lol

uncanny
Makes me feel daft, deaf, and lazy all at the same time.

@rolfl but what does she know about Java XML lol.

@rolfl Minus the kids part, I can also review code or edit a post. Sometimes I can also do homework.

I cannot watch TV and do anything else....
Either I sit, and watch, or I leave, and do something else.

Incoming Meta.

I think I might be about to write a very harsh PHP review. Possible bear trap perhaps?

12:21 AM
My wife prefers to do work with the TV on, and can mark assignments, plan lessons, etc.... all while cross-legged and cutting out crafts for her kindergarten classes.

depending on the song, I can play guitar and sing along ;)

@Mat'sMug Not depending on the song, I can do neither.

I can play the guitar, the radio, and the fool, all at the same time ;-)

Q: Web Crawler in Java

KyranstarI've written a working web crawler in Java that finds the frequencies of words on web pages. I have two issues with it. First, the organization of my code in WebCrawler.java is terrible. Is there a way I could refactor the class to make it more readable? Second, I want to find a way to group simi...

Q: JS to break up a navigation menu

Taylor HustonThis code works as I intended, but I am definitely a JS noob (C++ background), so not sure if this is the best way to do it (for example using .each instead of some kind of a for loop was completely new to me). https://github.com/TaylorHuston/menuBreak/blob/master/menuBreak.js

Could you give some examples of (open) questions? Questions about "why doesn't this code work?" are clearly off-topic. — Jamal ♦ 5 mins ago

If he had said "does this code work?", then it may be a little different.

hmm

A: Make the help center more explicit about what CR is NOT

Mat's MugI think part of the problem is that people that only take a quick look at the page will find "Trouble-shooting, debugging, or understanding code snippets" under a bold heading that says "What topics can I ask about here?". I suggest we change it to something more... explicit. Something like this...

yeah im learning it
why are you asking ?

I was looking on MSDN and couldn't find an answer, this T-SQL CR question uses DECLARE @@@VARIABLE I'm curious what the @@@ is for, I know @ is for local var and @@ is global var but never come across @@@

took at glance at your tags, ... how's your code review experience so far?

@matheussilvapb I'm not a pro in python so I can't answer your question, but I did give it an upvote. The only thing your question is missing is.... a question, but I assume you're just looking for a general review.

@SimonAndréForsberg I'm assuming this is some meme I don't know?

@hichris123 Never heard of exploding bear traps?

(hides)

@SimonAndréForsberg Nope.

haha

> Give me parameterized SQL or give me death!
heh

@Phrancis Sorry but I downvoted your answer to that PHP question, I didn't think your answer added anything useful. The question uses concatenated queries, so in the end there's nothing wrong with the SQL syntax (except for the fact that it's concatenated)
@hichris123 Just had to link to that Jeff Atwood blog post. It summarizes it perfectly.

I understand, nothing personal.

1:07 AM
@hichris123 I suppose it's good that you've never heard of exploding bear traps :)

This PHP answer of mine is perhaps a perfect example of what I mean in my answer to this meta question:

A: Can we ask reviewers to *not* focus on something?

Simon André ForsbergYes. It is fine to ask reviewers to preferably avoid commenting on something. Of course the reviewers can comment about it anyway, and then it will be up to the community - and the original poster - to determine if the review is helpful or not. If you're not interested in comments about naming,...

1:09 AM
^^^ @SimonAndréForsberg That should be mySQLi

@hichris123 Thanks, I'll fix

@matheussilvapb I think might just be our new Qt specialist!

@SimonAndréForsberg - if youa re fixing .....

@matheussilvapb Not me, but @JerryCoffin might.

@Mat'sMug not even close haha

Well, it was too minor fot me to fix....

nice @rolfl

Shit, this doesn't work like Facebook lol. How do you @ someone where their name includes characters you can't type?

You don't want suggestions about using prepared statements? Sure, you can ask reviewers to don't suggest that, but they will suggest it anyway!

I'm learning a lot of stuff now, I can't focus on one language...

Any C++ people here?

1:16 AM
hi

I know a little C++

How can I use an arbitrary variable type in a for loop? I have a type ZZ (for large numbers) that I want to use in a for loop.

@hichris123 what you need ?

Like this:

I don't even know ++ any more. Scala doesn't use increment and decrement operators.

1:18 AM
for(ZZ number = 1; number < 100; number++){

is ZZ a... type?

thats my question too

readability--;

@Mat'sMug yup.
wonders what ZZ stands for

It should not have any problems

1:20 AM
I'm not sure how it's defined, but that may involve overloading operator++.

the guy was asleep when he named it

@hichris123 C++ doesn't care much what the contents of the three parts of the for statement are, it just evaluates them.

@Jamal That's probably it, then.

Can you compile it @hichris123 ?

As long as they're legal expressions, it will work.

1:21 AM
Yep

I just tried it, and I got a: Error: conversion from int to non-scalar type NTL::ZZ requested.

@hichris123 If it won't work as is, then the compiler should tell you that incrementing isn't supported.

@Donald.McLean I tried using i++ in Python, but that also didn't work...

@Jamal I'm just getting the conversion error, but that's probably it.

The error is propably in your type zz

1:23 AM
hmm...

haha mr obvious here

oh, I got it.
You need to declare a ZZ beforehand. It has to be like:
ZZ something;
for(something = 0; etc){

@matheussilvapb yeah, he's kind of a ....mascot

TTGTB, night

hm, but the earlier code should work as well
how did you defined zz ?

1:25 AM
Wow, high concentration of moderators.

@matheussilvapb What do you mean? (fyi, it's from a library, NTL).

oh right
i havent seen it
oh man english verbs are impossible
is the last sentence right /
?

Yeah, it is.

how did you define zz ?

1:30 AM
did you x -> x is infinitive

hmm?

@hichris123 @matheussilvapb wrote "how did you defined", was asking about it, right @matheussilvapb?

@Mat'sMug Ohhhh!
nvm then. :P

lol but that explains why/how it works. ZZ is indeed a type. Why it's named ZZ is a mystery, but no longer how`for(ZZ number = 1;` can work ;)

ZZ Top (pronounced [zɪː zɪː tɒp]) is an American Texas blues and Hard rock band formed in 1969 in Houston, Texas. The band consists of guitarist and lead vocalist Billy Gibbons, bassist and co-lead vocalist Dusty Hill, and drummer Frank Beard. One of the few major label recording groups to have consisted of the same lineup for more than forty years, ZZ Top has been praised by critics and fellow musicians alike for their technical mastery. Of the group, music writer Cub Koda said "As genuine roots musicians, they have few peers; Gibbons is one of America's finest blues guitarists working i...

could somebody please check out my JS code to see if they can find why my variable is returning "undefined"? codereview.stackexchange.com/questions/51353/…

jamal.is_funny() return false
kidding haha

Doesn't compile anyway. ;-)

yeah missing semicolons!

Shit
hahah

I was gonna say that it should be in an if. :-P But that too.

1:38 AM
@hichris123 the problem is probably that you have to construct the object, because it's not a variable.
actually i said it return*s* false
sorry
im not a native speaker as you may have seen

@matheussilvapb You mean return !jamal.is_funny();?

@DatLumberZach Hey there ... there may be a miscommunication here.

oh shit, I'm mixing python and C hhaha
if you put jamal.is_funny() in a console it'll return false

@matheussilvapb What is your native language?

Portuguese

1:42 AM
@rolfl how so?

Brazillian

I see. Mine is French. Welcome to the club hehe.

@DatLumberZach Code Review is for working code. That's not to say that we don;t like fixing things too, but, if your question is not working .... then it should probably be on Stack Overflow

@Phrancis nice !!

it was working, I got feedback, and this is the follow up

1:44 AM
Also, what if all else-statements are false?
ahh...

Anyone is a CS undergrad ?

I am relatively new to JS so I am still learning how thing work out

else if (multiplesF > arrayF)
{
boxCount = multiplesF;
}

things*

There's no 'else' to your cascaded if/else/if

1:46 AM
omg .-.

@matheussilvapb I am

Oh nice

well that was something I should have noticed before even debugging it xD

I'll start CS next year

@DatLumberZach - talking out problems is suprisingly effective at debugging things ... ;-)

1:47 AM
@matheussilvapb enjoy the ride!

ahaha yes thank you :)

cant you have if/else cascades without else in JS ?

@Mat'sMug I will !!

@matheussilvapb I'm currently a senior. My remaining CS classes will be the toughest yet.

1:50 AM
@DatLumberZach - you canadian ... ? ;-) ?

@Jamal
cool

yes I am :P
what gave it away?
;)

Welcome to the club .... there's a high density of us here.

Do you think it's a tough course ?

ah, we are taking over :P

1:51 AM
I'm the only non-Canadian mod here. :-P

yeah CR is really Canadians Rule

and I think I might go into CS after I graduate

@matheussilvapb The major or specific courses? Next semester I will take intro to OO and parallel programming.

The major

@Mat'sMug I think you meant "CR is really <i>Canadiens</i> Rule"

1:52 AM
I tried adding my else statement but it is now always equalling my else

Oh WTF how do you do italics on here.

@DatLumberZach what do you study ?

haha yeah but at the rate they're playing in 2 games it's Canadiens are ruled

bold italics is done with ***bold italics***

1:53 AM
I am currently in High School

Me too

bold is done with **bold**

I'm ready for the flags...

have been in CS classes since grade 9

bold italics is done with ***bold italics***

1:54 AM
but grade 9 was a waste of time, as we only learned Turing...

and, strike with ---strike---

Really ?

Thanks guys.

Can you frequent CS classes in igh school ?

1:54 AM
@matheussilvapb It's kinda challenging, especially after junior year. Overall, it may depend on the particular school.

I took the g10 CS in g9, the g11 in g10 and am now doing the g12 U one in g11

@Jamal Yeah I think in Brazil is pretty different ...

and code with `code`.. and \` escapes a backtick.
and throw all that away for multiline chat posts

roflf I think I wrote a giant glitch

lol

1:56 AM
@DatLumberZach thats kinda unreal for me in Brazil, you can't study things other than Math, Portuguese, Physics...

no matter what the values of the variables are it automatically bypasses them and goes to the else

Come on MySQL, take my faulty code please >_<
Getting dreaded `Error Code: 1111. Invalid use of group function`

@Jamal

@Jamal

do you had calculus classes
?

1:57 AM
in Canada HS after grade 9 is basically whatever you want to study other than the standards like math and history

Yes, up to calc II, but I also took calc III by choice.

(runs)

Wasn't my best idea.

I havent done calc xD

Calc I was a breeze, calc II was challenging but doable, and calc III just went over my head.

1:59 AM
omfg I will never fix this bug fest

Haha, In brazil Calculus I-IV is obligatory
