@rolfl Is there no oppurtunity to tell the SAXParser where an on disk copy of an url resides? Like saxParser.setURLMapping("w3c.url", "schema.on.disk")?

It's not that simple.... SAXBuilder has to pass it to the xerces SAX parser (this data is not processed by JDOM, but by the underlying parser).

Q: Optimization of javascript xml parsing code

onlyMeI'm building page, that downloads list of Geocaching CWGs for my country in XML format and then parse it. Structure of the xml looks like this: <cwgkatalog> <cwg> <cislo>8245</cislo> <id_katalog>8245</id_katalog> <kategorie>cwg</kategorie> <verze>1</verze> ...

This is done by using an Entity Resolver of some sort.

Aw... that's a pity

The only way to solve it... (it's the SAX API.

11:27 AM
might this be worth a SO Q&A? Because when people mix Tesseract and SAXParser it is bound to go wrong

But JDOM only gets fed the SAXParser, so it would be possible to also write such thing myself?

JDOM allows you to set the EntityResolver that's used to construct the underlying SAX parser

scumbag smoke detectors waiting till 3am to figure they've got a dead battery... or whatever they're chirping about...

okay, so fiddling around time it will be next week

I guess I'll need to update all my intefaces to omit the pubic keyword

So, one smoke detector starts chirping because of it's battery... at 3am... so I take the battery out, unhook it, etc., so I can deal with it later.
But apparently in this house, if one of them isn't working, then they ALL start chirping.
So either the one in my bedroom chirps... or every other one in the house chirps until the one in my bedroom is fixed.

And then you figure out... you don't have any batteries at home?

No... I don't know if we have batteries here

@rolfl just had a small discussion about being a programmer-analyst. If a user opens a ticket that says "software doesn't work" and describes the symptoms, is it true that the "analyst" part of the title means I should be doing the investigation part and guess/find out what the steps are to reproduce an issue that appears to be random?

Titles are overrated..... ;-)
As far as I am concerned, the programmer-analyst is the person who you go to after you've seen deletes and updates outside of transactions, and comments that make no sense. The programmer-analyst then helps you to see that life will go on, and that there is a way to be both happy, and a programmer.
2

..so I'm wrong and he's right? I should be taking a chill pill and keep wasting my time on "it's not working" tickets that I'd wish to close for "unclear what you're asking"?

Damn, you're being serious ..... ?
OK, different answer.

dead serious.

@rolfl so that is what I am supposed to do.....

3:36 PM
Serious answer. Titles come from the dark ages of programming.
The programmer was given a very tight specification, containing input, output, and other design criteria. The programmer implemented the code to spec.
It is a monkey job.
The programmer-analyst is the person who is able to have some input on what th desgn should look like, whether there's better ways of using the input/output.

@Mat'sMug Programmer-analyst is used for so many different jobs that it's essentially impossible to say anything meaningful based only on this phrase. It's pretty much a Humpty-Dumpty phrase: it means exactly what they want it to, nothing more and nothing less.

^^^^ that too.

@JerryCoffin that's what I thought.

But, a "programmer" was expected to regurgitate the program from the spec, even if the spec was wrong.
The programmer-analyst is supposed to think a little smarter, and challenge the places where things can go wrong.
When it comes to problems..... I would guess that the programmer-analyst is expected to be smarter about fixing problems that are not related to things they actually wrote.

@rolfl ^^ that was my mental concept of it before that conversation

3:39 PM
in other words, you can think beyond your immediate task.
But, titles in general, have very little to do with the way people actually work.

so users should keep saying "fix X, X doesn't work" and I should just keep it shut right?

As for your original question.... : If a user opens a ticket that says "software doesn't work" and describes the symptoms, is it true that the "analyst" part of the title means I should be doing the investigation part and guess/find out what the steps are to reproduce an issue that appears to be random?
I would expect any programmer to be able to do that with their own code.
And a better programmer (-analyst) to do that with pretty much any code in their language.

it's not my code - I keep being reminded ;)

Intermittent bugs are one of the hardest things to solve, and teach people valuable lessons about defensive programming.

@Mat'sMug While I agree that that was the original intent, the mere fact that somebody is still using these job titles tends to suggest that they have a rather outdated view of programmers (in general) as basically cogs in the giant software machine (so to speak). This view tends to lead toward a very narrow view of the job in general--one that typically emphasizes coding over thinking.

3:42 PM
it's a spaghetti piece of crap that the programmer-analyst in me is able to refactor and rewrite into readable, maintainable and extensible OOP code..

As a side note, now is not the time to be taking a stand on issues at work ...

oh so true
I just said "fine." Unsaid: "..now go away"

I agree with Jerry's statement too, about being narrow-viewed.
You may find this entertaining .... this was in my inbox yesterday morning:
> I wanted to let you know that yesterday was Xxxx's last day with IBM as he handed in his resignation, going to a competitor. I wish Xxxx all the best and thank him for all his contributions over the years.
^^^ about 15 years.

@rolfl That sucks.
Speaking of work, I'd better get going. TTYL.

Well, yeah, but at IBM a 15-yr-old chair is a real find!
bonus !!!

@rolfl I do this with PHP and I normally code in VB.NET and C# I only know basic syntax of PHP. so I would have to say I am a really good Programmer/Analyst then by the criteria being listed
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
waiting for Team Foundation Server to get a whole crap load of documents after it crashed.......
well it didn't crash, but it stopped connecting to my local file location and I had to clear my workspace and now trying to remap it.

@rolfl I thought the analyst part was more about, you know, realizing that 99% of database access code isn't using connections properly, and coming up with a design for properly dealing with parameterized queries and cleanly dealing with the db connections...
2

I have written about 30-50% of the code that I work with on a daily basis.
I made a really cool fix on a service using a simple dictionary last week.
and then there is an error

3:55 PM
hey

@Mat'sMug The analyst part could be that, and could include debating the merits of the rewrite, and opportunity costs, but does not include actually making the decision to do it.

there's no one in charge of development - the person immediately above the "programmer-analysts" is the corporate director of IT who has no clue whatsoever

So, it sounds like a broken system.... roll with it.

@rolfl That's because I can hardly keep being interested in one thing at a time.
Whatever that sentence means.

mhh can you do html in the chat?

5:50 PM
@rolfl Another explanation:
In retrospect, it's weird that as a kid I thought completely random outbursts made me seem interesting, given that from an information theory point of view, lexical white noise is just about the opposite of interesting by definition.

A: Addition plus division taking up all my CPU - Kinect depth denoising

Jesse C. SlicerWhy are you avoiding parallelization? This type of problem is known as "embarrassingly parallel" because each loop iteration is independent of any other. Quick replacement makes it happen: for (int i = 0; i < this._LastFrames.Count; i++) { DepthImagePixel[] currentFrame = this._LastFrames[i]...

Q: Radical modularity in Java

AntiMSThe development team I'm a part of wrote and still maintains a codebase of pure Java spaghetti code. Most of this was implemented before I joined this team. My background is in Python/Django development and the Django community really emphasizes "pluggability" -- a feature of Django "apps" (modu...

Don't refactor, keep supporting the spaghetti stuff ;) Anyone can refactor, spaghetti is for real men only. — peter.petrov 30 mins ago
dont be a looser. refactor is a way out for people who cant understand whats written. have a spine and understand whats written and better it....unless you have an idiotic client you is willing to pay huge dollars to refactor even the "hello world" parts of your app. — Nazgul 23 mins ago

@skiwi perhaps this guy can come and replace me when I'm gone!

@Mat'sMug Maybe your cocoders appreciate him

my boss certainly would!
and it's "coco-coders"

Q: Dynamically setting unknown properties of a subclass from parent class in Objective-C

LoganI'm doing my best to explain how this works, but it's pretty confusing and lengthy. Let me know if there's something I can do to clarify. I'm building a class that model's a custom Plist and sets its values to properties in the class automatically. Most importantly however is the core concept o...

that one's for @nhgrif ^^

Q: How do I draw box-and-pointer diagrams?

200_successHow do I draw box-and-pointer diagrams? For example, I'd like to illustrate what happens when you manipulate nodes in a linked list. Can I use MathJax?

Why .... is that in meta?

is that a question?
;)

No matter what noun 'that' refers to, my answer is 'yes' =P

@rolfl I feel like you would like this article:

wow that's a tiny little article!

@syb0rg That's quite a big post I see

Ugh, there is a spasm of C# homework questions on SO at this moment. (with either no code or no context included of course)

I should also read that

7:20 PM
@skiwi Yeah, though I saw COBOL on the first line and immediately thought of @rolfl

I saw Java 8
So that means that I must read it

A: What site to use if you have a "gimme teh codez" question?

Mad ScientistThere is no SE site for that, and I can't imagine that there ever will be one. A Q&A site where people answer questions without any monetary compensation can't work if the ones asking spend pretty much no effort on their problem and the answerers are expected to do the whole work for free. If y...

@Mat'sMug Nice. I found a resource the other day but lost it -- a one-pager about how to properly ask questions on a technical forum.
I wanted to save it so I could use it in comments on poorly-asked questions.
Can't find it anywhere now though

The Vampire Spotter's Guide can also be useful, ...use tactfully ;)

I love that blog post though

@Vogel612 thank you
