@DamkerngT. Well, exact pitches don't exist

Anonymous
The idea of an exact pitch is a construct that doesn't match reality

Anonymous
Every real physical wave has a bandwidth

Anonymous
The shorter the time, the wider the bandwidth must be, until at t = 0 you have all frequencies

Anonymous
And at t = ∞ you have an exact frequency

Anonymous
But of course t = 0 and t = ∞ are fictions

Anonymous
11:53 AM
All real waves have a finite bandwidth

Anonymous
It's that bandwidth that's constrained by the time-frequency uncertainty principle

Anonymous
Or rather, it's the bandwidth that's related to time

user116848
@snailboat I gave my vote :p

@Arrowfar Yay!

user116848
And it's opened now. Yay!

Hello!

Hello!

A frequency with t = ∞! I guess even the universe itself still hasn't existed long enough to vibrate just half a cycle of that!

Anonymous
Hehe!

user116848
So, I didn't visit SE for some hours that's why couldn't see any new messages :-)

Anonymous
Well, welcome back!

user116848
12:03 PM
:)

And hooray for the reopen!

user116848
@DamkerngT. Hey!

Ho!

user116848
@DamkerngT. You still talking like a pirate? lol

Hehe!

I wish we knew more about how the brain processed audio

Anonymous
It's clearly very good at it :-)

user116848
@snailboat I have never seen any question with so many votes, closed. It has 41 votes.

user116848
I mean who voted to close it before? lol

Anonymous
Look at the edit history

Anonymous
12:12 PM
And you can see who voted to close and reopen

user116848
I didn't know we could see all that!

user116848
Let me find that...

@snailboat It's clearly very good at processing information in flux!

Sometimes a post has been closed and opened but hasn't been edited, and then you can't see it. So you can use a trick: find a post that does have an edit history and view that. Then edit the URL and substitute in the numerical post ID of the post you want to see the history for (it can be a question or answer, it doesn't matter which)

moudizIn my job we use alot the word TAR reference , it represent the number of a program modification. but what does it mean ? what does tar stand for ?.

Probably off-topic.

12:14 PM
user3169 close a lot of questions.

user116848
He is like in every close vote

Anonymous
They have opinions, as many users do, about what is on- and off-topic

user116848
Almost every

Anonymous
They think many things are primarily opinion-based, if I recall correctly

user116848
Yeah. I think so too.

I think POB should be reserved for "open-ended, chatty questions that diminish the value of our site" (which is what the close reason says)

user116848
But that is just mean.

Anonymous
Very few questions on ELL should be closed as POB in my opinion

Anonymous
It should be reserved for questions like "What's your favorite color?"

Anonymous
Where there is no real answer and people are just posting whatever they feel like

user116848
I see.

user116848
12:18 PM
@snailboat Good trick. Genius! :-)

user116848
So, guess what? I don't use fb :-)

Me either!

user116848
I am on it but I don't go there often.

user116848
Person of Interest got very amazing all of a sudden in its fifth episode.

user116848
12:29 PM
Yay!

user116848
I watched it last night :-)

Yay!

user116848
I wish it remains like that.

12:57 PM
@Arrowfar "I wish it remained like that." or "I hope it remains like that." depending on what you want to express

1:10 PM
Aww... He already left.

I guess I can ping him then :-)

Q: What is the impact of such a device on math education?

Ice BoyRecently I found this device advertised which uses any mobile phone's built-in camera to solve equations. What impact will it have on how Algebra will be taught in the future? In particular will maintaining skills in solving equations become a thing of the past?

user116848
@snailboat Thanks snail! :-)

user116848
@IceBoy hi skull :-)

hi pal @Arrowfar

user116848
5:15 PM
@IceBoy +1 upvote from me. I had to sign up on math SE. I was not there :)

@Arrowfar thanks :-)

user116848
@IceBoy It looks like a new tool for maths.

yep, available in early 2015

user116848
I first saw it mentioned yesterday in ELU chat.

user116848
Maybe Matt mentioned it.

user116848
5:18 PM
I don't know.

Robusto

user116848
Oh, him.

user116848
I see.

9:15 PM
Hi. I had a question about describing some events in the past.
Which one is correct? don't or didn't: I asked him why we don't/didn't have a football team? (It is referring to a question I asked in the past from someone)
@snailboat @DamkerngT.

9:32 PM
No one here?

10:31 PM
I'm still waiting looking for answers.... :(

@user215721 In general, shifting it into the past tense is safer. However, you don't have to (shift it) if what you report still holds true. In any case, I recommend shifting it, because unless you shift everything skillfully enough, there is a good chance that people will think your un-shifted reporting is an error.
Hello!

@DamkerngT. Many thanks! So I should use past especially when I am asking about something that is no more correct now. (i.e., we have a football team now).

@user215721 That's right!

11:04 PM
I don't know why but the two sentences below give me different feelings.
> 1) There are grammarians in the room but none of them are Americans.
2) Grammarians are in the room but none of them are Americans.
It probably is weird that I think (2) sounds like all the grammarians are in the room!
