't Hooft drops by every now and then
Shor is quite active on the other computing SEs

@ACuriousMind yes you're right, a pity though (, on the other hand I enjoy reading Urs Schreiber's answers as well. this user MBN has some nice/famous question posts as well.
@ManishEarth yeah he puts time into each answer as well, so nice

@Phonon On my very first answer here on Physics.SE Peter Shor commented to tell me why I was wrong and dumb (he did it nicely). I felt honored to be bitchslapped by someone like him :-p

@BrandonEnright hahahaha

@BrandonEnright XD an honor nonetheless surely ;)
@BrandonEnright when was that?^^

A: How photons represent colors that you see?

Brandon EnrightPerception of color and brightness is very complicated. You brain performs all sorts of normalization and prediction of color based on what it thinks is correct. The same is true for brightness estimation. This leads to huge number of surprising optical illusions. Here is one based on shadows...

I haven't read that answer in a while. I hope it isn't too wrong :-/

12:05 AM
@BrandonEnright ouch :p
in all fairness, it wasn't a trivial thing to be wrong about anyway,

@Phonon Well I really shouldn't have tried to answer something based on how I thought it works.

well if you hadn't, you wouldn't have had the pleasure to be corrected by Peter Shor :DD
oh man it is getting so late, I really need to get back to studying, talk later :D

Something funny: this page calculates the time it would take for the Earth to fall into the sun if it stopped orbiting, but the formula there seems to conflict with the one I got here and that several other answers confirmed... anyone care to look for the difference?
Or is it just a math mistake?
...nvm, found it, missed a $\pi/2$

@DavidZ
There's a user spamming the front page with promotional material
...seems to be promoting videos by Pearson India
(strange...)

7:17 AM
Voted to close, and flagged as spam

@Danu @JamalS thanks, I'll take care of it
...and done

@DavidZ Thanks for responding
I wonder what the motivation was

For the record (you probably know already) the most important thing for stuff like that is to flag as spam, more than voting to close
Making money I presume :-P
anyway g2g I'll be back later

I don't think a company'd try to have someone promote them on physics.SE?
doesnt seem like a profitable enterprise

1 hour later…
8:50 AM
If they were promoting physics lab equipment, some of that stuff is very expensive and they might only need to make one or two sales to make it profitable
But most of it I think is just people doling out links anywhere they can
That's the original idea behind spam, that you post or share a link anywhere you can, without bothering to consider whether the destination is an appropriate place for it. It's cheap to do so and you only need a few people to respond to make a profit

9:06 AM
...although this time the answer also contains a genuine answer, not just spam

9:22 AM
looks plagiarised

10:13 AM
@SabreTooth Yeah, this person is just posting promotional material for some kind of organization, it seems

1 hour later…
11:29 AM
@Danu thanks, I'll take care of it... those answers look like a poor attempt to appear legitimate but I don't think they're worth saving

11:46 AM
@DavidZ I think I agree :)

2:46 PM
It irks me in a professional sense to see all these questions on Worldbuilding asking whether something can be done in a somewhat scientifically realistic manner, and then all the answers tossing most of established physics out the window :-P
(even though I know that's the point of the site)

Jim
@DavidZ I think the point of that site is to get under physicists' skins. I'm not going to say you shouldn't visit it, but it's like reading a comic book, don't be surprised when real science is given a back seat

3:11 PM
Which flag is appropriate for this question?
Low quality or something else?

Jim
no flag is really appropriate
It's a valid question that simply shows an enormous amount of insufficient prior research

So, it doesn't deserve to be closed?

Jim
Some would say that closing due to insufficient prior research is a valid reason. I'm not one of those people. I think this question doesn't really belong here, but I can't see a valid reason to get rid of it
That's why the good lord invented downvoting

I VTC it for lacking specific concept
Probably doesn't really fit

Jim
yeah, it's not really homework-like and it is about a specific concept
I think the most suitable, if still not valid, would be "too broad"

3:19 PM
No way, Primarily Opinion Based ;)

Q: Does the heat equation violate causality?

octonionI've ran across the idea that, besides simply writing partial differential equations in covariant form, they need to be hyperbolic with all characteristic speeds less than the speed of light. A straightforward generalization of the equations for a dissipative fluid to the relativistic case suppos...

That's a good question
Sadly, the answer doesn't really address the issue of the remedy
And it also seems to be arguing from a classical perspective, rather than a relativistic perspective

So, if low quality flag reason doesn't apply to this question, what can it potentially apply to?

@New_new_newbie I'm trying to find one, but most of them are deleted already

Q: Why do we have the "very low quality" flag?

jinaweeI can't see the difference bewteen very low quality and not an answer. The flag descriptions are: it is not an answer This was posted as an answer, but it does not attempt to answer the question. It should possibly be an edit, a comment, another question, or deleted altogether. it i...

A: Why is magnetic field vector perpendicular to magnetic force vector?

hatomI think the reason why the magnetic force is perpendicular to the magnetic field is, when the magnetic field exerts a force on the current carrying wire, the huge force at the centre moves either upward or downward depending on the direction of the current.

^That was flagged as LQ

@KyleKanos - And it has still survived (as yet)?

3:29 PM
Not enough people voted to delete it, I think

@Jim Thanks. Hopefully that will clear something up :)
@KyleKanos Ahh! OK. "As yet"

Jim
In other news, I'm happy to call this the first day of winter up in Canada. I'm sitting pretty in Toronto as usual and we have our second day this week of -10 degree weather. It's about time, eh? All that's left to do is grab a beer and go play hockey :D
Fun fact: Most, if not all of Canadian pride is found exclusively in our beer commercials (example: youtube.com/watch?v=nes4lCAFlr0). I am happy about this fact

Well, this was a question with clearly insufficient effort, "low quality" as per the literal definition (maybe not from the SE definition), and definitely a candidate for closure.
Why did John bother to answer this at all?

Jim
because John answers 30% of all questions on this site. That's bound to include a few duds

But doesn't having an upvoted answer prevent closure?

Jim
3:46 PM
nope

Great then. I thought it did :)

@New_new_newbie He's said in comments once or twice that simple things like this are actually good to answer because it can actually be a struggling point for some people
What's interesting, though, is that he initiated the VTC

Oh. For some reason, I was under the impression that if you have a question sitting at -3, and it has an answer sitting at even +1, that question can't be deleted, even if it deserves to be deleted.

Yes, any question with a positive answer cannot be deleted

So, it can be closed, but not deleted? So I messed up a comment above:
11 mins ago, by New_new_newbie
But doesn't having an upvoted answer prevent closure?

3:56 PM
Any question can be closed, regardless of the number of answers
All it takes are 5 close votes from >3k members or 1 mod

And after that? It will stay closed, but won't be removed if it has an answer at +1?

Correct
Questions that are closed with no answers can be deleted after 2 or 3 days (I forget which)

So, we shouldn't answer them, for the good of the site. But John's point is - answer them, for the good of OP. So, we have a contradiction :)

Yes. There is somewhat a contradiction
But it's not with us, it's him ;)

Jim
Hang on, questions with upvoted answers can still be deleted after being closed, but the number of delete votes required scales with the number of upvotes on the answers

4:00 PM
VTC means "I think this question doesn't belong here"
Answering the question means "I think this question belongs here"
@Jim Really? Meta.SE post on that one?

Jim
Let me find it

Very good. Two more contradictions. :)

Interesting.
Never knew that
I thought it was a lost cause if there was an answer

Jim
Learn something new every day

4:03 PM
Usually

Jim
You usually learn something new every day? Is that the same thing as "60% of the time it works every time"?

Scales with upvotes means?

@Jim No, that just means that I don't always learn something new everyday

Jim
woah, what's with these flag notices? Why am I reviewing flags on chat now?

Chat flags
Welcome to 10k buddy

Jim
4:08 PM
I thought 10k flag reviews were discontinued

That's site reviews
Chat reviews are still a thing

Jim
cool

How cool? -10 degree?

Jim
it kinda feels intrusive and pressuring. Like I have to drop what I'm doing and make a snap decision
-10 is warm

Sorry, it was a bad joke. Couldn't resist a nasal cartilaginous protrusion. :)

4:41 PM
@New_new_newbie just to confirm what some others are saying, that'd be the downvote "flag"

5:03 PM
@DavidZ OK. Thanks :)
