@DaveCoffman man, that guy in the linked question is a [insert bad name here]! wow...

@DaveCoffman Yes, you can click Flag at the bottom of the post & then select from the menu--in this case, a message to moderators (last option) would be the best bet.

@waffle: o/

Hey @KyleKanos :P

How goes it?
Haven't seen you in a whiles

Yeah... Well, most of the time, I can't get into hbar with my mobile network
Sadly, I don't think I'll get my broadband (I lost my hope in it)

Awww

I've fixed my dialup (again), and I think it'll last for a few weeks (so, I'll be around) :)
@KyleKanos: How you doing?

3:11 AM
Doing good
I've discovered that BoxLib is a lot easier than I first thought

Still in CFD, or job changed? :D

I'm still in grad school doing computational astrophysics
I'm studying, though, to pass an interview for computational finance

Ah, oops... yeah, computational AP!! Pardon me, I forgot... :D
@KyleKanos finance? what are you gonna do there?
@KyleKanos (discovering through google)

@Waffle'sCrazyPeanut Yep, it's an interesting field. I'd basically do Monte Carlo-Markov Chain simulations of options (stocks, bonds, etc)
Then see if a particular put/call is worth the investment

Nice! Interesting... :)
When's your interview? Tomorrow?

3:16 AM
January
I have to self-learn Stochastic Calculus
I'm sitting in a probability models course
Which is actually very interesting and I think I'd be doing better than all the mathematicians in the course if I were actually taking it

A physicist gave a talk last semester about how many physics majors (at least at the BS level) don't necessarily want a PhD (and most don't get one either)
That we ought to be tuning our degree programs for those students who don't want the PhD
He did some research (not serious one with surveys and stuff, just talking with HR reps from major companies) and found that most companies preferred physicists over postition-majors (e.g., CS majors for a computational job)

@KyleKanos agreed...
@KyleKanos I don't understand - physicists over majors?
why so?

So for a job in geology, they often prefer physicists than geologists because physicists can do the job just as well and pick up the techniques faster

This reminds me of a question (asked a few months back), where John Rennie answered, "A physicist can survive almost any job in the planet" (something like that), which is quite true! :D

3:23 AM
Seemed to be the case more so for science-minded fields (lab sicences, engineering, etc) than not (e.g. law)

yeah...
@KyleKanos: Now, I wonder why you're looking for another job when you've got comp. AP?

a few reasons
(1) I've got 4 kids and a faculty job here in the US starts around 55k, which is unsustainable with that many kids
(2) Research lab jobs are far & few between (but post-docs aplenty), and the ones that are available are across the US from family
(3) Post-docs are too temporary (2-3 years) to get, despite it leading to higher-paying faculty jobs
I'm already 31, I don't want to be getting my first real job at the age of 40

I understand... :D
@KyleKanos: Do you have opportunities? I mean, the job you're looking for - do you get it often? Or, are they rare?

From what I understand, in order to get a job in finance you have to know someone who already works there
I am fortunate enough to know someone who already works there (he's my brother in law)
So i'll be getting the call for the interview

Lucky you! :D

3:32 AM
I am lucky in this respect!
Hopefully I can impress them!

Good luck! :P (... on your interview too!) ;-)

Thanks

So, I have an interesting exam tomorrow - "High Speed Aerodynamics"
I didn't care about that subject since the college started (as I was indulged in Classical Mechanics), but now I seem to like it...

High speed aero...sounds interesting
Like Mach speeds, or still subsonic?

@KyleKanos No, always supersonic...

3:37 AM
Fun fun

Honestly, it looks like supersonic flows have got more affinity for me, compared to subsonic & (boring) incompressible ones...

Ouch. 390 lbs lineman hit a 200 lbs running back and concussed him
Clemson vs Florida State football game

You're watching football?

Yep
American football
Not Soccer Football

@KyleKanos Oh, heh... I don't think I'll be able to differentiate one football from another! :P

3:39 AM
American Football allows the use of the hands!
And they have pads on

Oh, that one... Yeah, I've seen that. :)

(shoulder & chest pads, Soccer uses shin-guards)

(Well, I should admit that I'm not a great fan when it comes to sports) - So, I guess you'll have a million "sporty" things to convince me :P

American Football is the only sport that I actually pay attention to

Yeah, I've eavesdropped you people chatting about that here once in a while... :)

3:46 AM
Kickers are amazingly bad at their jobs at the college level
Clemson's kicker missed two field goal attempts from under 30 yards
Should be easy at that range
Now they're going to over-time because of that.

Hehe :D
@KyleKanos: You play football?

Never, actually
My parents didn't want me to play in high school because of possible injuries & insurance

Well, you're at least good at criticizing it! :P

It's not criticizing, it's point out facts! XD

Yeah... (like this one)
4 mins ago, by Kyle Kanos
Should be easy at that range

3:50 AM
That's a fact!
The professional kickers (who come fro the college ranks) have like a >95% hit percentage!

Oooooohh...
@KyleKanos: You don't deal with subsonic flows in AP, right? Because, last semester, I had low speed aerodynamics. It was a horror! I really didn't like it very much...

In that range, I mean
Actually, Supernovae are quite supersonic

(full of assumptions & stuff) - had to memorize a lot (I miserably failed memorizing that lot, that's why I hated it!

Alright, game's over
Clemson lost
Heading to bed now
Gotta be up in 7 hours
Goodnight!

@KyleKanos I'm about to have my breakfast! :D
@KyleKanos Good night! :)
C'ya around later...
@KyleKanos finally....

Q: Nav buttons (Questions, Tags, Users...) styling seems screwed up

Nick TThe styling on my navbar buttons is a bit off. The font is a bit strange and the highlighted area overlaps the sort-by tabs. Mucking around in the DOM/Style inspector, if I uncheck the font-family property of .nav a it is magically fixed. I've hit Ctrl-F5 (cacheless refresh) to no avail. Not su...

A: What is the minimum distance between two opposite point charges

HolgerFiedlerWhat we know is that the electrostatic force does not work nearby the nucleus. The interaction between the positive and the negative charged particles stops at some distance, where Quantum Mechanics describes it. These distances for small orbits are well studied. To calculate them is much more di...

@KyleKanos Are you active?

@ACuriousMind Well, there are a couple of ways to be generous and say that the poster has not expressed him- or herself well, but the question needs a better answer one way or another.
