@DanielSank ::groans:: -1
@DanielSank, I upvoted all the PSE Best Of meta posts; there are still 3 where you are at -1 but for the rest you're at 0 or 1. I'll look through for nominations later.

@heather Right, so we were joking a few hours ago
9 hours ago, by rob
We're going to have to rename the place "the h bar and grill" if the food discussions become any more prominent.
Then we came up with some food/physics puns, and @anonymous said
9 hours ago, by anonymous
How about The h bar(beque) ?
So it was jokingly made into the new name
After all, we have more posts about food here than on Cooking SE

hmm, very nice
@SirCumference wait wat

They hardly talk about food

huh.
speaking of food, i'm eating some delicious pancakes right now.
chocolate chip, too.

I'm so hungry now ;-;

you could make your own pancakes =D

1:05 AM
Hmm, well I'd have to go out

oh
then make something else tasty
eggs are always nice

And the supermarket is, like, a whole block away

whew, that's far

@heather I'd also have to go out
We have no food here :P

uh...
okay, um, i don't know then.

2:05 AM
Hi, everybody!
@heather Awww man, chocolate chip pancakes for dinner?!
@SirCumference I am a pro at delicious, easy food.
I can get you to the store, back home, and eating delicious dinner in 30 minutes.

@DanielSank Teach me your ways

@SirCumference Here are some lightning fast options:
3
1) Buy a baguette, some cherry tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, and lettuce. Tear the bread into little pieces. Chop the tomatoes in half, and throw it all in a bowl and drizzle olive oil on it. Eat.
It's sort of a raw pizza in a bowl, plus lettuce for fiber.
2) (a personal favorite) Buy broccoli, nappa cabbage, some bok choy, and eggs. Chop the vegetables up, put them in a colander. Put some water in a pot. Put the colander in the pot. Put a lid on it and turn the heat to max to boil the water. This steams the vegetables. Don't cook it too long. Fry and egg, dump the whole thing on some rice.
Someone can make the rice while you go get the vegetables. You only want to steam the vegetables for a few minutes. It's very fast.
3) (turbo easy) Go buy a can of black beans. Cook them with some spices and just eat it. Black beans are awesome, filling, and taste good.
Need more, @SirCumference?

@DanielSank Nah, I'll be good. Thanks :)

6:05 AM
Hello.

How many days before 0celo will be back? I cannot seemed to see anymore counter on his page

I need some help. When, in Newtonian Mechanics, are systems said to have steady- state motion?
Is a = 0?

6:26 AM
@SwapnilDas I think it means external force is 0.

user228700
@JohnR: Morning, morning :-)

Last night dream: Family relaxing at a water park, buying cakes somewhere in Japan (but the streets are actually HK). Barlerka have proved that division by zero is nonassociative using 0x+0+...= 0 while Acuriousmind questioning his proof because there is a zero vector
The cake thing is likely reflecting the real life event that dad and sister are currently travelling in japan
The water park thing is probably related to me watching a lot of water slide videos on youtube 2 days
The division by zero thing is obvious

Morning :-)

Barlerka being involved in this division by zero thingy might be based on an inverted emotion of me have to be warry not to post too many division by zero messages when he is active in the maths chat to not hog it

user228700
@JohnRennie Have u heard of a Google Chrome extension called Momentum?

6:40 AM
and finally, acuriousmind and zero vectors is most likely a reference to my extreme shock of making the trivial error of the zero vector as a quantum state yesterday, which I am further shocked for unknown reasons when I saw the exclamation marks in acuriousmind response to my error

No ... ?
Google, Google. Aha. That seems like an excellent way to procrastinate :-)

It seems I tend to be shocked by some ordinary events for reasons I still trying to figure out

user228700
@JohnRennie :-| Procrastinate? How in the world?

Well you can spend your time doing electrodynamics problems, or rearranging your Chrome new tab page. I know which I'd rather do :-)

user228700
@JohnRennie :-P No no, I didn't just discover it.

user228700
6:43 AM
Besides, there's no rearranging to do. It's automatic and we can't customise the page or anything. Today's theme looks excellent so I wanted to share it here, that's all.

user228700
@JohnRennie Hm, since it's electrodynamics and all, suddenly I'm not so sure as to which option you'd choose :-)

The trouble is that having worked with computers since 1978 (!) I take an unromantic view of them. I regard them in the same sort of way a car mechanic regards his spanners. How many mechanics do you know who decorate their spanners with pretty pictures? :-)

user228700
@JohnRennie Yes, I know this :-) I quite like it when it looks very pretty tho. This is what today's theme looks like: (SO beautiful)

user228700

Well for me, the two options are equivalent: I can go back to sleep to chase my dreams, or wake up and chase my actual dreams

user228700
6:48 AM
@Secret Haha, well said! :-)

That's ... wonderful. Yes, very nice. Now, those electrodynamics problems :-)

user228700
@JohnRennie :-P Thank you.

@Kaumudi.H :-)

user228700
I've had enough of this sh*t--I swear to God that I will finish this chapter today, come what may.

I have to say that I sympathise :-(

user228700
6:55 AM
Thank you :-(

user228700
Alright, I have the quickest question of all--when they say symmetry plane, do they mean "Take a side-view of the object in question and find the symmetry plane/line of that?"

One to have a look at:
0
Q: E=hf vs E=hft. Does Planck's constant have a hidden variable

Dave JonesIn answering How can a Photon have a "frequency"?, I cited Juliana Mortenson's contention that Planck originally included a measurement time variable: E=hft. However, in later papers, Planck allowed the simplification of a constant measurement time t=1sec and added it to h. Hence, E=hf where h to...

@Kaumudi.H It's hard to say without looking at the question, but I'd guess they are referring to an obvious plane of symmetry.

user228700
Hmm, OK. Thanks.

@DavidZ what's the Mortenson paper? I can't see a link to it.

7:07 AM
@JohnRennie Yeah, there isn't one. As far as I can tell, the poster is talking about this (which I found via a Google search)
I guess I should have put the link somewhere

@Kaumudi.H Why so much hate for electrodynamics ? :P (BTW didn't you just start the chapter? since you were at derivation of electric fields 2 days back)

@DavidZ "Materials Science and Technology" ??? Looks like an attempt to be the rather better known "Journal of Materials Science and Technology" from Elsevier.

I keep thinking "Mystery Science & Theater"

:-) Anyway it's a crackpot article. I've voted to close as unclear.

@JohnRennie That's basically what I thought, but in the spirit of niceness I'm trying not to call people crackpots outright
At least not today

7:17 AM
@DavidZ Anything special today ? :)

No

No, sadly crackpots are an everyday occurrence :-)

user228700
@anonymous Integrating over and over again is not much fun. Yes, but this chapter only has integrating crap.

Sounds like all of E&M

user228700
@JohnR: My masterpieces tend to look like this:

7:27 AM
@Kaumudi.H Hmm. Integration seems easy part of the chapter to me. There are many other conceptual aspects of E&M. Anyway, I love integration so maybe I am biased. :)

user228700
@anonymous Aren't u in 12th? Bro, this is the second time I'm doing all of this--I graduated high school last year.

@Kaumudi.H Why are you doing it the second time then ? You already did it in 12 th toh ?
Are you repeating a year ?

user228700
Never mind, camera not working.

user228700
@anonymous Yeah (Just JEE. I graduated with relatively great marks last year)

I see.
@Kaumudi.H Oh! What was you JEE Main marks ?

7:31 AM
On the up side, the 500 or so servers I look after all installed Windows updates and restarted last night, and so far I only have one dead server and that one doesn't really matter.

user228700
@anonymous I was going to answer this but let me reply with a question--why dyou want to know?

user228700
@JohnRennie Oh, nice! :-) Better than yesterday, huh? Or was it the day before? Sigh, it feels like my days are all bleeding into each other.

@Kaumudi.H I am going to appear this year so maybe your marks will help me get an idea of how most kids perform at JEE Main. And I might ask you for some valuable tips which you gained due to the exam experience.

For my special project year (year 3), I accidentally clogged my vacuum pump and the group need a whole week to fix it, thus my special project report started midway earlier than the deadline period

For my honours year, we have a rooster to follow, thus there wil be months people working outside the lab. This is where my group suggest I should start my thesis, thus I started my thesis earlier than my peers

user228700
7:36 AM
@anonymous The trouble is that marks are a very poor way of assessing how most kids perform in JEE. For example, let me submit that one of my friends, who studied for this exam for all but a few hours on the day before (He was writing the exam as a joke) scored better than an exceptionally smart boy in my class who attended coaching for about 2 years.

user228700
While that is, in some ways, an assessment of how people perform, it only reflects what went down that day, and there is nothing to be gained by knowing this information.

Okay.
Thanks

user228700
I don't have very many tips to share with you, anonymous person (:-) because I don't know you; if I had any idea about how you write exams, I could've helped but since I don't, I doubt if anything I say will be of any value to you.

Chill and have some h-barbecue :-)

I get it. Its okay.
Thanks anyway :)

user228700
7:41 AM
Sure. I'm sorry that that's the best I can do.

@Kaumudi.H Yesterday, which should have been a quiet day, was a bit of a nightmare while this morning is quiet when I expected it to be busy. Oh well :-)

user228700
@JohnRennie Oh. Well, at least today's a quiet day :-)

Doesn't the room title need a hyphen now? @rob

rob
?

Yes. I had a really nice meal yesterday, a good night's sleep and it's quiet this morning so life is OK right now.
Something terrible is obviously about to happen :-)

user228700
7:45 AM
Nah, that's not always true :-)

OH NO!!!!!

user228700
...I take that back, actually. I might torture u with electrodynamics questions all day!

user228700
@JohnRennie U're joking, right?

My coffee mug is empty!!!
Fortunately that's easier to fix than a dead server :-)

user228700
-__- Your mug becomes empty about once every 5 minutes.

7:48 AM
Since I have no work to do I suppose I should go through the review queues ...
Wow 26 items in the close queue :-(

@JohnRennie Do you know the reduced mass concept? I had asked a question on it 1 week back and it has still no answer :/
0
Q: Proof of reduced mass form work energy theorem

anonymous Two blocks having mass $4 kg$ and $10 kg$ respectively are connected by a spring. They have initial velocity and accelerations as shown in the above diagram. In my textbook block A is taken as rest and block B is taken to be the reduced mass $\frac{(4)(10)}{4+10}=\frac{40}{14}=\frac{20}{7} kg$...

@anonymous I saw your question but didn't understand what you were trying to do. We normally use the reduced mass when working in the centre of mass frame. I've never seen it used the way you seem to be attempting.

@JohnRennie Reduced mass is not always used in CM. Sometimes one body is kept at rest and the other body is in motion with reduced mass but with same internal force. My query is why the K.E. of the moving "reduced" body's KE is $\frac{1}{2}\mu v_{rel}^2$ in frame of the body considered at rest. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reduced_mass
In physics, the reduced mass is the "effective" inertial mass appearing in the two-body problem of Newtonian mechanics. It is a quantity which allows the two-body problem to be solved as if it were a one-body problem. Note, however, that the mass determining the gravitational force is not reduced. In the computation one mass can be replaced with the reduced mass, if this is compensated by replacing the other mass with the sum of both masses. The reduced mass is frequently denoted by mu, although the standard gravitational parameter is also denoted by μ {...

user228700
Oh crap, crisis @JohnR: I did something and now the cursor is like that thing where u know, gah, I used to code in C++ and I only ever encountered this problem there but you know when the cursor becomes like a block and not a line?

That usually means you've switched to overstrike mode rather than insert mode in something that expects text input.

7:54 AM
@JohnRennie My question is directly from the fourth image on this page irodovphysicssolutionrks.blogspot.in/2014/10/…

@Kaumudi.H Try pressing the Insert key and see if the cursor switches back.

In this problem the solution is not from COM frame
Rather it is from rest frame of one body
While the other body is said to be the reduced mass

user228700
@JohnRennie THANKS! :-)

And spring force remains same.

@Kaumudi.H computers are easier than electrodynamics :-)

user228700
7:57 AM
Maybe :-P

rob
@JohnRennie Seems like this can only be true for mechanical computers.

@rob on the grounds that computers are electrical devices?

rob
@JohnRennie Well, electrical computers are.

@rob that's silly. Computers work by magic. All the great computer nerds know this.

rob
@JohnRennie But Larcke's Claw says that sufficiently advanced magic is indistinguishable from technology.
Google it.

8:05 AM
Exactly. The universe actually works by magic, but it can be approximated by physics. Black magic in fact - how else do you explain the Navier-Stokes equations? :-)

user228700
Will I finish this chapter today? Well, "Hope is the thing with feathers, that perches in the soul and sings the tune without words and never stops at all".

user228700
I'm taking a break so I'm allowed to tell this story but @JohnR: Dyou know that a few years ago, I sent in some of my short stories to a website called SparksNote--they had posted an ad for those who would be willing to write for them and they accepted them and even offered me a position to write for them. Unfortunately, my board exams were coming up and I was an effing idiot so I didn't take the opportunity :-(

@Kaumudi.H Does it pay for writing on their website ?

I doubt there's a wonderful career to be had writing for SparksNote, so you made the right decision. Once the pain of the exams is over there'll be lots of time to revisit all these things.

user228700
@anonymous Yes.

8:12 AM
@Kaumudi.H How much ? :P

user228700
@JohnRennie Well, yes, but it would've been nice to have that experience. The pain of exams, BTW, will not be over for a very long time--I sent those stories in about 4 years ago, when I was in 10th. The board exams in 10th are a big deal, which is why I dropped it.

Actually upwork.com provides many such positions and jobs for freelance writers
Even essays like Spark Notes

It's tempting to look back at all those what ifs. It gets more and more tempting as the years go by.

user228700
@anonymous I dunno, since I didn't respond to their offer.

user228700
@JohnRennie Yes, I agree but I'm only saying that it may have been a good experience, and not in a bittersweet regretful tone, I assure you :-) I bet that I'd be able to pursue writing in college.

user228700
8:17 AM
@anonymous Yes, many many website do, actually. My father is an editor for a news company called RTT but he also does freelance from time to time.

My servers are calling. Back in 15 minutes.

@Kaumudi.H You can even make your own website or Youtube channel on essay/story writing :) Youtubing is the new cool :)

user228700
Indeed it is, but I'm not an expert at talking about writing. I doubt if I'm even ready to share what I've written with other people. I haven't written anything (Apart from ridiculously long letters to friends and family) in many years now. The last proper piece of art that I made was probably a poem about my mother that I wrote two years ago, I think.

user228700
I used to have a blog, which I sort of abandoned for a bit. When I revisited it, I realised that it was all BS, so I ended up deleting it (This was in middle school, what else dyou expect?)

8:32 AM
C'mon now you're out of high school. Give another go. :)

user228700
...In college I will, thanks. :-)

Anyway I've to go. It was nice talking. Bye!

user228700
Bye.

8:57 AM
cya
The h-Bar(becue) @rob

9:13 AM
@Kaumudi.H The question is, do you want to share what you write? If so, why?

user228700
:-) Yes, that is (the latter) the question. I haven't thought about this comprehensively, which is why a clear answer doesn't spring to mind. I haven't shared anything in a terribly long while so I don't even know what that would feel like.

user228700
These days, I only write letters of appreciation/(platonic)love letters to my friends and family and sharing that is an entirely different experience from sharing stories and poems so really, I dunno...

user228700
@BalarkaSen Why dyou ask?

I don't know. This is the overwhelming question I find myself trying to answer, maybe that is why.

user228700
9:22 AM
@BalarkaSen I see. Do u write/create art?

I don't; maybe I haven't yet found the right medium for sharing my point of view (which, I think, is what art does).
Still exploring the various artistic styles - mostly reading literature/poetry and watching films.

user228700
Ohh, I see...

user228700
@Balarka: If you're interested in making art using your hands, this channel might prove to be very useful:

I don't really think youtube channels are the right place for me to understand art, but thanks.

user228700
9:34 AM
@BalarkaSen My advice to you is: Be open. Without knowing what the channel is truly about, I think it's unfair to say that it might not be the right place to understand art.

I am not really very open minded about the views on arts, and the artistic styles, no. I truly believe that art is understood better by watching works of art than talking about it.
I am the kind of person who dislikes critiques and analysations, by heart.

For me, art give me emotions that are subjective, not necessary shared by other people who watched the same artwork

But I do recognize that this is my own personal belief, and I don't want impose on anyone my own views.

user228700
@Secret Be open applies to most things, really. In any case, the channel itself is not about critiquing. The curator for a museum in Indianapolis is the host of the show. She visits several contemporary artists and first gives us a brief glance at what they do. More importantly, the artist assigns her and the viewers an art assignment that you can do at home. It is in this way that art is being explored, not by observing and critiquing.

Again, that is your opinion. I do believe art is understood by observing.

9:39 AM
Well, I am still watching the channel, thus I don't have comments about the channel yet, if any

user228700
@BalarkaSen No, I don't have a well-formed opinion of this yet. I was only telling you what the channel does.

Fair enough.

I also like to know the artist's intention or concept/motif used in their artwork. Only then I will understood why it is significant to them
even if i don't necessary agree to their views

user228700
@BalarkaSen Also, in the interest of understanding your view on this, what is the point of merely observing if we don't have meaningful conversations about it, and exchange different viewpoints on the same piece of art? So much can be gained through these (hopefully nuanced) conversations.

My current opinion is, anything can be art as long it carry some notion of subjective or objective significance

9:42 AM
@Secret That is more or less impossible, in a true piece of art. In the end it would be your interpretation of the artist's motif, hence your interpretation.

For most yes, for some artwork, you can talk directly to the artist and he/she will tell you what is in their mind when they first made the artwork

user228700
@Secret I think this helps some people but I've found that most artists seem to have a general disregard to whether or not their audience is understanding it the way they made it.

usually the same artist tend to use simialr motifs, emotions or concepts

@Secret And often times I found that the artist's interpretation seem shallower than mine. The conclusion I come upon is a true work of art is disjoint from the artist's original intentions: they get a life of their own, independent of whoever first "created" it.
I like to believe, thus, that art is discovered, not created or invented.

user228700
^ Exactly, and most artists seem to believe this.

user228700
9:46 AM
This (Point no. 3) significantly changed my opinion about art:

That I agree, take Angelus Novus as an example, its meaning and interpretations evolve along with the audience, age and the social an cultural context
in the beginning, this artwork does not even have a name
For modern installation art, I like art that is made so that it is the audience who decides what it means to them
(turning the issue of interpretation on its head so to speak)

@Kaumudi.H My belief is that art is felt, not understood. This is why I think you can't break it up into logical bits and pieces and talk about it in a scientific way - art is not science. To quote one of the legends and my favorite artist, "perhaps art is proof that we were created in the image and likeliness of God".
I do not believe viewpoints can be exchanged until they are truly felt.

user228700
To each his own.

For sure.

9:51 AM
For me, it is mixed. There are some artwork created for a specific purpose, others are discovered by accident, by (insert suitable term) and you are free to ascribe meaning to them. There are atomic things in some artwork like the motifs and how they are related to the social background the artwork is made, but at the same time there is this subjective feeling that is specific to each audience and even the artist itself, which is dynamic
For example, when I look at some installation arts, it give me the impression I am looking in an infinite expanse, a powerful emotion as if all background noise is gone and it's just you and the installation
For example
As for myself, I tend to make artwork for a specific purpose of storing my emotions, as if the physical or electronic media that is the artwork is a canvas where my emotions is projected into hence can be stored in a subjective, but tangible format for future retrieval
this also explains why most of my music composition sound suck to myself unless I am emotionally charged enough. My music composition heavily rely on my emotional states
(Video commentary): Ok fine I now know how it is significant because of the symbolism of the clocks as lovers. However, that does not stop me from thinking that I am just looking at two synchronised clocks and no big deal
something that is significant to you is not necessary interesting to me, although I am happy to know about why it is significant to you

user228700
10:08 AM
@Secret I remember this, but I don't recall which video it's from.

That PBS video clip you referring to. I am watching it now

The h-Bar(becue) and modern impressionist art symposium :P

user228700
@Secret The first one? OK...

Here's a even more blatant example of my commentary above:
This is called Spatial Concept "Waiting"
It is actually quite significant in the art world and kinda embody what balerka said about "art is discovered". Basically, the artist discovered by "going beneath and the confines of the canvas", there is "sublime"
however, understanding that only makes me aware it is significant, but it does not stop me from think it is just a canvas with a slitm abeit one with a special shape and stroke
One of my thought on art is, what is really the art itself is not the whatever physical nor digital thing we are perceiving, but something beyond that
Here, in my view, spatial concept "waiting" contains whatever that is being discovered, presented in a more physically accessible form. But like trapping a higher dimensional lion in a 3D cage, it might become mangled in the process

3:56 : I actually have an artist professor who taught us that art is similar to science in a way that both are exploring questions
Science is the exploration of our natural world, while art explores meaning and culture
I like art which give me a surreal feeling. The more unfamilar the better. I like art that give me that notion of the infinite expanse that whatever concept that the artwork based on live in
Addenum: Actually the reason spatial concept waiting is significant is not really because of its interpretation, but it is the first time in history that artwork breaks through the confines of the canvas. This influence might have paved the way for future artworks with an increase emaphsis of the negative space

10:39 AM
@Secret That looks like random scribbling on paper :P
I seriously don't understand abstract art

For abstract art, I usually only concern how much it reminds me of an infinite expanse. To me, the viewing angle of the abstract art is crucial

I could make any random scribbling and make some pompous claims about its interpretation.

Well, if you can make it convincing, then you will be famous

@Secret Exactly. I think being able to convince people is the skill needed to be an abstract artist rather than being able to draw. (And yeah I think even I will try it :P)

@anonymous Although I share your scepticism about the visual arts I think you should not be too hasty to dismiss them. In the same way that many of us have a natural ability with mathematics some people have a flair for visual stimuli.
I've long suspected that the variations in the way different people's brains are wired is larger than many suspect. Personally I see little merit in any of the famous paintings, except I suppose I can admire the skill required in the rendering.
However my mother is a big fan of art and can usually tell who a painting is by just by looking at it. On the other hand she's crap at maths :-)

10:55 AM
I only just developed my artistic sense back in 2015 when I started expanding into the nonsciences
and since then I have amassed some artist friends to discuss about art and philosophy
One thing that is clear, despite not a nihilist when not angry, I seemed to have a heavy obssession of the concept of nothing

user228700
@JohnR: Hey, you're back! :-)

I've been lurking for ages. I just didn't have anything useful to say :-)

space, void, infinite expanse, zero, infinity. They are all related to the concept of nothing somewhat, thus nothingness is an interesting something, a something we cannot hold in our hands
That is, similar to the quanutm vacuum, Nothingness is some kind of "stuff"

user228700
@JohnRennie :-) OK. How's ur Sunday going?

@JohnRennie I think I agree with you. Maybe some people have a different sense of art than I have. I judge art purely by the amount of detailing that has gone into it. But some people have other interpretations! And that's okay :)

10:58 AM
@anonymous personally I think it is, and has always been, primarily something that rich people patronise to show how rich they are.
It's intrinsic value is essentially zero.
But that's just my opinion :-)

user228700
Whoa.

@Kaumudi.H what else did you expect from someone who has been a colloid science nerd, a computer nerd and is now a physics nerd? :-)

Haha XD Even my father has a habit of buying abstract paintings and filling our walls. I and my mom get fed up sometimes and throw them in the store room and lock them forever :P I feel dizzy seeing so many senseless paintings hanging around :D

user228700
@JohnRennie I too am an amateur nerd in many fields but my opinion is very different from yours...

@Kaumudi.H Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Mine happens to be right :-)

user228700
11:02 AM
:-) There is a scene in the movie Inside Out that I like very much.

Even I do like the artwork, I found absolutely no need to buy them. For starters, the internet have taken many photos of them. The more important reason is that they are not the actual thing I am after, the artwork is just a physical representation of the concept

user228700
Different parts of the protagonist's "self" are riding the "Train of thought" inside her mind and they notice two boxes labelled "Opinion" and "Fact". On the way, these boxes jostle around, causing some of the articles inside them to fall out and one of the passengers scoop them up and put them back into the boxes, not bothering to check what belongs where. When asked about why she did that, she says something along the lines of "Oh, humans get these things mixed up all the time".

Always good to see allusions to testicles back on the star board :-)

11:12 AM
I might not be able to complete this chapter by today after all, but tomorrow I will move on to better things.

user228700
@JohnR: Have I told you that I am (and have been, for a very long time now) in love with the British accent? :-P

@Kaumudi.H It's odd how some accents are attractive and how it varies from country to country. As a general rule Brits find the French accent attractive.

user228700
Hmm. I think it's safe to say, however, that the British accent is universally loved (And I say this because I have met people of several nationalities who seem to agree).

Americans have a love/hate relationship with it. Think how many films there are where the villain has a stereotypically British accent.

user228700
:-P Thought u weren't a film-person.

11:18 AM
sup peeps

user228700
Oye, @Kenshin: Ello! Long time.

yeah long time no see
how's things

user228700
Things is OK :-P U?

yea pretty good

user228700
11:20 AM
BTW, @JohnR: It's interesting to me how I find it almost impossible to associate you with the voice in your (infamous) video. In my head, you have a deep voice and a slow cadence.

No. I'm a tenor not a bass.

what is my voice?

@Kaumudi.H Good animation.

user228700
@JohnRennie And I know this from watching that video but I continue to imagine you like that and this is very interesting to me. I dunno why and I'd like to draw some grand metaphor out of this but I fail :-P

user228700
@Kenshin I don't generally imagine all the people here with voices. It's only when I watched that video that I realised that I was imagining it differently. If u'd asked me before watching it, I wouldn't have been able to answer.

11:25 AM
@Kaumudi.H I personally feel that British people speak too fast. (Or maybe I am more comfortable with slow speakers :P)

user228700
The British Accent has a way of making even ridiculously silly sentences sound very pretentious and almost wise.

user228700
@anonymous Maybe. I know that @JohnR definitely speaks very very fast :-P

@Kaumudi.H Hehe. Where did you hear his voice ?

user228700
@anonymous This is the infamous video:

user228700

11:29 AM
Oh thanks. I am seeing it

user228700
Whoa, it's 5 PM. I should probably have lunch...

user228700
@JohnRennie Ooh. Will u bid on it?

@anonymous I am not into abstract art either, but some stuff like Escher's are simply visually stunning and mathematical. Expressionist "The Scream" is a classic. I don't actually know what qualifies as abstract.

Anyone here done any astronomical Doppler spectroscopy?

@Kaumudi.H No. On translating from the German (thanks Google translate) it turns out to have a failed motherboard. I don't have a spare in my pile of parts and it would be expensive to buy one.

user228700
11:32 AM
Oh, I see. Bummer :-|

@JohnRennie In the video why are you hiding behind the camera ? :P Only your hand is visible twice or thrice !

I'm naturally shy

user228700
^ Yeah, @anonymous: dude, the man has only one picture, what dyou think? :-P

@BalarkaSen
I am talking about art like this
^
Which was sold for several million dollars
and makes 0 sense to me
Aven a kindergarden kid could make something like this I feel

Yeah, shrug to that.

11:35 AM
36 mins ago, by John Rennie
@anonymous personally I think it is, and has always been, primarily something that rich people patronise to show how rich they are.

@BalarkaSen But art forms like fractals and all are quite interesting :)

user228700
@anonymous For the second time this afternoon, I link this video, titled "I could do that":

@Kaumudi.H I watched it already :)

@anonymous Yep, those are what Escher's things are about :) Hyperbolic geometry.

11:36 AM
Was just discussing my opinion with Balarka
@BalarkaSen Yep. I love those!

user228700
@anonymous It's unfortunate that your opinion hasn't changed after watching the video but then again, only to me (and some others) might this seem unfortunate.

Speaking of paintings I recently saw a beautiful one. Google "Danse Macabre; Camille Saint-Saens" and look at the youtube video.

@Kaumudi.H I get the point of the video. I was just discussing my taste with Balarka. I never said what others should like or not like. I just said what I like and what I don't

I wouldn't say that I could draw the thing anonymous linked. Just that I can't make much of it.

user228700
@anonymous Sure, but I noticed that you still seem to be of the opinion that you too could've done something like that.

11:40 AM
@Kaumudi.H Yeah and still "I feel" that I can.
Lets stop it here
No use discussing further.

anyone good at python here?

You want Heather, Bernardo or Daniel for Python stuff.

user228700
@anonymous Expanding our echo-chambers to include the voices of those who think differently from us is extremely important, I feel. I'm sure that there will be many to whom the value of that painting is obvious and having conversations with those people (while also trying to go into these conversations with the intention to listen, rather than win) is important. All this, of course, if u care to do so :-)

HEather is a beginner

user228700
@anonymous Agreed. I don't have anything to add.

11:43 AM
@Kenshin was a beginner

oh k

user228700
I can't believe I just forgot to have lunch. Geez.

Lunch ...
I can't really stop for lunch for another hour or so.

user228700
@JohnRennie What dyou mean? Stop what?

Stop messing about on my computer.

user228700
11:47 AM
:-) Hey, it's almost 5:30 PM here! I usually have lunch at 12:00 .__.

Skipping meals isn't a good idea.
Your blood sugar level falls and you become less productive.

user228700
@JohnRennie Thank you, health guru :-P I'm not skipping. Gonna have lunch now. I'm not excited is all--lunch is super boring today.

What are you having for lunch?

user228700
@JohnRennie I'll come back and show u a picture.

I'm probably going to have ravioli with grilled cheese today.

11:51 AM
gyoza for me

user228700
@JohnRennie That's so much more delicious than this:

user228700

room topic changed to The h Bar(becue): General chat for Physics Stack Exchange (physics.stackexchange.com). For MathJax see meta.stackexchange.com/a/220976 [food]

user228700
Rice, sambar, a side dish of cabbage, and some fried...stuff, I dunno what to call them.

lol

11:55 AM
I'm hungry now ...

@Loong Hey, just one tag is looking strange. Could you add some more or rather put "food' in the description of the room..

user228700
@JohnRennie :-) And what u see in the sambar is potatoes, carrots, some curry leaves and tomatoes. Yup, that's about it.

That's what we Brits would just call a vegetable curry. Plain fare but nourishing.

@Kaumudi.H What are those white net like stuff ?

user228700
@anonymous That's the fried stuff I dunno what to call.

11:56 AM
@Kaumudi.H Papad?

We call those "bari".

user228700
@anonymous No, not papad. I think they're called "Vadams".

Oh thanks bala

user228700
Yup. Googling "vadams" yields the correct results.

user228700

user228700
11:58 AM
^Just fried stuff we eat with rice, in the evening with tea, basically anytime. All the time, actually :-P

@anonymous What do you like: ?

user228700
@Kenshin Literally never heard of that.

user228700
Also, @Ken: How dyou feel about the room's name change?
