3:00 PM
Me involved neither; I've not flagged anyone as far as time goes since my coming here @0celo7.

I'm in the clear then.

@ACuriousMind A mod came in and say "oh, the flag was dismissed" after I was suspended.
For saying BS, by the way.

user116211
@0celo7 Yeh, saw that.

10k users are full of trolls who validate each and every flag they come across.

@0celo7 that's rather unnecessary phrasing

3:01 PM
@DavidZ No, it's not.
I'm tired of the flag validation troll band

@0celo7 I'm not sure whether mods can see what the outcome of a flag was, but 10k users never get to know what ultimately happened to a flag they voted on unless they go looking for it.

@DavidZ Actually I agree with 0celo7 on this one.

Anyway, who wants to talk physics?

Well then perhaps you'd prefer I be more direct: it's inappropriate phrasing. Don't suggest that people are idiots.

@ACuriousMind Doesn't matter. People definitely validate every flag.
It's like putting goop on stairs. You don't know who gets screwed over, but someone will.

3:02 PM
I would guess some 10k user(s) didn't bother to read the comment properly and just clicked the Valid button.

@ACuriousMind I read this wrong.
He did go looking for it, because he came here.
So I don't know why he said it was dismissed.
@DavidZ It's not inappropriate because it's not directed at anyone specifically.
I am saying someone who validated that is an idiot.

Given the number of 10k users on the network, I think this isn't a particular group of people nor "people". I agree however that it seems kind of random whether offensive flags get validated or not - probably precisely because it's prety random who votes on them.

@0celo7 : oh FFS, get over it.

I'm not pointing my finger at anyone.
@JohnDuffield Be quiet.

Move on. Instead of whining.

3:04 PM
@ACuriousMind Who even flags in the first place?

Physics anybody?

If you knew any physics, sure.

@0celo7 and I'm saying don't do that. Consider this a formal warning if that's what it takes.

But no one here is interested in another long, drawn-out discussion with you.

@0celo7 Impossible to know by design. Which wouldn't be a problem if the flag outcomes were consistent.

3:06 PM
@ACuriousMind I thought mods could see flags.

We can see chat flags while they're active, but I don't think we can see who cast them.

@DavidZ Meh. You ban me or they ban me. Doesn't really matter any more.

@0celo7 I think in most cases the 10k users act on flags before any mod actually gets up to investigate. The chat flag system is broken, and it has been forever, there are four years old meta.SE posts about this very issue.

I actually bought a New Scientist this week.

@0celo7 calm down, it was just a couple of people who didnt read the context before validating.

3:08 PM

"cockup" not "conspiracy"

@JohnRennie No conspiracy, just a bunch of... ::looks at David:: ...wonderful people.

@0celo7 :-)))))

Might want to get that quadruple chin looked at.
@JohnRennie How's Women on Sex?

The quadruple chin has been hard earned!

3:11 PM
sigh lol

Every time I have good pork chops I have to rethink my position on beef as the king of meats.

Those rolls contained bacon and cheese!

They can rival the legendary New York Strip, and are about half as expensive!
Which, given my rabid book buying habits, is pretty important.

It doesn't start well. The first three of the six principles are 1) the speed of light is constant 2) the equivalence principle, and 3) the cosmological principle. Only 1) it isn't, 2) it only applies to a region of infinitesimal extent, and 3) is like saying I live in a forest so everybody else does.

@JohnDuffield But we have telescopes to check 3), and 1) and 2) are the usual dead-end conversations.

3:14 PM
@0celo7 I got it free as an introductory offer in a book club. It's written by a masters student who did a mini Kinsey type study for her masters then turned the results into a book. Fun reading, and quite eye opening in places.

...what kind of book club was that?

@ACuriousMind Desperate single women.
@JohnRennie I'm currently eyeing about 9 books. Realistically, I will "use" all of them, but not completely read any.

@0celo7 : when it comes to 3) we can't see the wood for the trees, and 1) and 2) are the usual popscience myths.

I wish I could return BBS as "defective"

@ACuriousMind just a normal one - I think it was connected with one the UK daily papers. The book is rather less controversial than the title suggests.

3:17 PM
@0celo7 "Doesn't work as advertised"?

@ACuriousMind Yes, something like that :D
@JohnRennie Do you own a single math book?
I would show my library but I don't want you to know how much of a hoarder I am...or to tell me I could have bought a high-end gaming PC instead.

You could've bought a high-end gaming PC instead.

Not in paper form. I've quite a lot of popular maths books as ebooks and one or two proper maths textbooks that I'm still hoping to read one day ..

Because that thought never crosses my mind!
@JohnRennie Oh, what books?
I can recommend some good ones (really good, not meme good)

wtf does "meme good" mean?

3:20 PM
@ACuriousMind I don't know algebra well enough to say it in terms that you understand

The best popular maths book I've read is (by a long way):

but in geometry, we have Kobayashi-Nomizu
fantastic books because they somehow contain all of geometry, but impossible to read
@JohnRennie I meant the proper textbooks?
At least one Riemannian geometry book I hope?
@ACuriousMind Really, it's reference books that are "meme good"
but stuff like Sachs and Wu is meme good

@0celo7 No, fraid not.

like people say it's good, but it's actually terrible
@ACuriousMind does that make sense?

3:23 PM
I bought a couple of books on number theory because it seemed a good idea at the time, but I've never read them.

people only say it's good because they can find answers in it, sometimes
Steenrod is meme good. Algebraic topologists on the math chat say it's incredibly hard to read, by my advisor loves it for some reason

Actually I do own this in real book form. Does this count?

Why does the $V$ have a bar?
@ACuriousMind Ah. HE is meme good.
It's actually a terrible book.
Completely unreadable for non-experts.
@JohnRennie Maybe, but I'm weary of a book covering so much material in 200 pages.
I don't know if I need this
It seems fairly standard, but for some reason my advisor bought it

3:45 PM
Is tinnitus a standard term?

For a high-pitched noise you hear but which has no external cause?

Yes.

Yeah, I would call that a standard term

@ACuriousMind For the record, I know what it means.
I am surprised someone else doesn't.
@ACuriousMind Oh, I forgot! There were no clowns.

@0celo7 Maximus Tinnitus - a 2nd century Roman emperor.
Known for his high pitched whining voice. They named the disease after him.

3:53 PM
lol, nice faux-etymology

It's true!
(for a small and unconventional subset of meanings of the word true)

I don't want to buy more books...but I must.
Help me
Honestly the best argument is that my "immediately accessible" shelf is full.
Like...really full.
It's spilled onto the desk proper

user218912
4:32 PM
hello

4:44 PM
what's up?

user218912
I'm rewriting my qft problem set in larger font so it's readable. I'm surprised I was able to finish it at all, thanks to you guys. :)

user218912
and I'm also despairing over problem set 2 which is apparently really difficult if I remember from last year.

user218912
@0celo7

@ACuriousMind here is the problem statement https://i.gyazo.com/ba440d94c6af69a5818c4642e16c6c51.png

user218912
what do.

4:47 PM
Maybe I should buy a shelf instead of more books

user218912
are you allowed bringing your own furniture in residence?

yes

user218912
lucky.

user218912
@0celo7 ...so if I want to learn how to do that problem what should I do?

Considering your problems, I think you're unlucky :/

user218912
4:49 PM
@0celo7 which problems? my personal issues or my problem sets?

@IceLord Residence hall problems.
Internet, furniture

user218912
right.

user218912
i'm at home right now though, i go home on the weekends.

I have two shelves, and a nice desk chair

user218912
if I was in residence it would take 3 mins to reply to your messages.

4:50 PM
it's actually quite nice here

user218912
@0celo7 I have a desk with a shelf on top of it.

user218912
do you still have that loud LoL roommate?

@IceLord I mean I brought in two shelving units
@IceLord No

user218912
that's good XD

@IceLord uh
let's see
You might have reached my QFT limit
I know how to do the contour thing
Yeah, I dunno how to do that.

user218912
4:53 PM
maybe i'll have an idea once we learn time ordered product in class in a week or so.

Should I?

user218912
for what?

Some books
Not Lee hardback

user218912
sure.

user218912
I bought some books yesterday.

user218912
4:55 PM
with my infinite source of money a.k.a. student credit card.

they give you money for books?

user218912
no I'm kidding.

I have an infinite source of money aka my job :)

user218912
dude reminds me

user218912
this prof told me if I get at least a 70 in 3 graduate courses this year he'll get me a research grant with him for the summer.

user218912
4:56 PM
5k for the whole summer.

cool

user218912
that would be my first job.

user218912
but... can I do that?

user218912
I'll need to work like 17 hours a day to get a 70 in 3 courses.

I know $70 of that is mine in the form of Lee.

user218912
4:57 PM
I'll try my best xD

I'll give my paperback Lee to my advisor.

user218912
@0celo7 sure dude if I succeed in this idc I'll buy you lee and a few other books.

user218912
100%

user218912
quote me on that in april.

@IceLord First edition HE.
Unused.

user218912
4:59 PM
:O

Wonder how much that actually is
I remember it being like $400
$450 lol
I don't actually want that.

user218912
good.

Well, I do, but maybe when I'm retired or something.
But then it'll be $1500.
Hmm.
@IceLord what have they told you about the time ordering operator

user218912
@0celo7 nothing

user218912
we just learned about quantizing classical field theory.

user218912
5:06 PM
we didn't even learn normal order yet.

then how are you supposed to do that problem?

user218912
it's due october 15.

user218912
and I realized that the prof goes wayyy more into detail in class than in the notes so

user218912
i pretty much am depending on my own class notes for reference.

that's generally how going to class works...

user218912
5:09 PM
lol

user218912
I don't find that's true for all classes though.

user218912
in my condensed matter class the prof basically just states results and says to look in the book for more details.

user218912
._.

user218912
we're finally going into some cool stuff this week, we were spending the last few weeks on drude model.

user218912
@0celo7 my condensed matter course assigns all the problems from the book and it has a solutions manual online.

user218912
5:17 PM
what would you do in that case?

cheat, probably fail the final, not get the 5k

user218912
xD

user218912
@Obliv hey.

hello @icelord

wtf no hi for me, what am I chopped liver?

5:22 PM
Mmmmmmh, chopped liver

user218912
lol

@ACuriousMind What are your thoughts on my current avatar?

@0celo7 do you ever take a day off

I'm not sure what it is, but it looks kinda cool

@Obliv No, currently struggling with PhD level homework
combinatorics
I recently got an enthusiast badge
it's been a while since I got one of those

5:25 PM
Well, you get them only once per site

really?

I can't believe I've only gotten one

Otherwise I should have multiple Fanatic badges :P

I have the pundit badge
wonder what comments I left that were good
I mostly leave snarky ones that get deleted

user218912
5:27 PM
@ACuriousMind what do you think of the qm book by schwabl?

NO
@ACuriousMind let me answer
@IceLord ACM does not know how to read. He knows ZERO books.

user218912
@0celo7 he knows schwabl.

@0celo7 Both statements are untrue but capture the essence :P

I'm calling shenanigans
Is that a yiddish word?

I have occasionally looked at Schwabl to look something up, but I don't have an opinion about it.

user218912
5:29 PM
@ACuriousMind YES if acm read schwabl then it must be good.

user218912
it will be my go to reference.

wat
I looked at it because I was a QM book I could get for free
No judgement involved

@IceLord ACM owns BBS string theory. It must be amazing.

user218912
from all the string theory books I've looked at, I could actually understand BBS chapter 1-2 I think.

user218912
so I agree.

5:33 PM
@ACuriousMind :]

::facepalm::

@ACuriousMind I'm god-awful at combinatorics. It doesn't make sense
Can you help?

Depends what exactly you mean by "combinatorics"

Draw 13 cards, that type of shit

0
Q: Can I ask to have a block or left alone by a user?

JenI have this user who is always the first to close and down vote most if not all my work if you can call it that. I do not want him on my stuff. I truly feel harassed even though he has not really broke any rules. I just want him to leave me and my stuff alone forever! What can I do?

5:34 PM
high school math, honestly
LOL
ACM stop bullying Jen

Sigh.
This is why people often don't bother to leave comment when they downvote.

@ACuriousMind Drawing 13 cards from a standard deck. $A$ is the event of drawing 4 aces, $B$ the event of drawing 4 kings, I have to find $P(A\cup B)$.

user218912
bleh

I don't even know how to begin

user218912
I don't remember how that works either.

user218912
5:37 PM
I took a course like that in hs.

Oh, I hate those exercises, too

The hint is to use Bayes' thm
oh shit I have a violin thing to go to...

user218912
oh you play violin?

no

user218912
I think I know what you're referring to.

user218912
5:39 PM
have fun.

what?

user218912
sorry I phrased that badly.

user218912
brb

I agree, he is a big meanie. He downvotes like 80% of the time. — 0celo7 8 mins ago

That made me chuckle for several minutes :-)

@IceLord there is a violin concert that someone wants me to go to

5:46 PM
the clowns are forcing you to go hear violins? Oh, the horror!

@ACuriousMind This might be the best avatar yet. Album cover from Travis Scott's latest LP.
@ACuriousMind I don't think the person would appreciate the comparuson

I believe she wouldn't, yes

@ACuriousMind So, any clue how I do that problem?
The homework is often very disjoint from the lectures

6:45 PM
@dmckee (regarding cyborgs) Exoskeletons seem very promising. :)

6:59 PM
@ACuriousMind You wouldn't consider a user-requested voting ban on you ? :-)

@Fermiparadox Yeah. Even quite light and wimpy ones could make a huge difference for geriatric patients. And they are investigating single purpose one to help health-care works lift patients which is especially interesting because it provides an environment for development of the technology on a commercial basis.

@HDE226868 I'm sure some would.

user218912
7:19 PM
@BernardMeurer I need python help.

user218912
or i'm fucked.

7:30 PM
@IceLord There's an outside chance I can help. What's the issue?

@IceLord I'm home now
What's up?

8:00 PM
@BernardMeurer listened to some cultured music today
Chopin, some others

@0celo7 Chopin is nice
@JohnRennie Got bumblebee to work :)
Had to do a full reset of Linux though
but that only takes me 40 minutes nowadays

I also was inspired to buy some books in the intermission. I have issues.

Hi, everybody.

hi
@DanielSank I desperately need help in intro probability

8:06 PM
@DanielSank Heya
I'll soon explain to you what my great idea was
Now that my video drivers work :)
And my backlight control

Ok, my inbox is always open
@0celo7 Ask on math.se and send me a link?

@DanielSank It's a one-line question
the lectures are completely disjoint from the homework, and I cannot understand the lecturer half the time
he has a really thick Indian accent, makes a lot of mistakes, etc.
Drawing 13 cards from a standard deck. $A$ is the event of drawing 4 aces, $B$ the event of drawing 4 kings, I have to find $P(A\cup B)$.
I don't understand what concepts to use
I'm worried about failing the class because I literally have no clue what's going on
I'm thinking I should write $P(A\cup B)=P(A)+P(B)-P(A\cap B)$
But what is $P(A)$? Is it ${52\choose 4}/{52\choose 13}$?
And the same for $P(B)$?
Then $P(A\cap B)={52\choose 8}/{52\choose 13}$?
@BernardMeurer Do you know?

@0celo7 Hmm let me think

That gives me a negative probability.

52 cards in a deck, 4 of each card
the probability of getting any ace is $\frac{1}{52}$ right?

8:19 PM
there are 52 cards

but it's getting an ace in a 13 card hand
you need to use combinatorics

so getting 4 aces will be $$\frac{1}{52}\times\frac{1}{51}\times\frac{1}{50}\times\frac{1}{49}$$

again with the 54 :P

There :p

8:21 PM
but that's not right, because you could draw 9 other cards first, then get 4 aces
you need to use binomial coefficients

Ah
Yeah I don't know that :/

I'm clearly doing something wrong
let's read the book again
ok, what I need is the number of ways of drawing a hand and having 4 aces in it
Aha, maybe we have to look at the cards that are not aces
So we need the number of non-ace hands.
So if we have 4 aces, then the rest of the $9$ cards are chosen from $48$
so that's $48\choose 9$ hands.

user218912
@BernardMeurer @HDE226868 I have to use pylab to plot some stuff and also do numerical integration.

user218912
no idea how.

0.00528 is the answer
seems legit.

user218912
8:30 PM
@0celo7 what course is this for?

Axiomatic probability

user218912
wow you really do want to become a true mathematician.

This might help. I've never messed with Pylab

user218912
@BernardMeurer i'll read it thanks.

No worries man

user218912
8:32 PM
it's due friday so i'll do it friday at 3am.

$$P(A\cup B)=2\cdot \frac{48\choose 9}{52\choose 13}-\frac{44\choose 5}{52\choose 13}=0.00528$$
Dammit

@IceLord There should be some numerical stuff already loaded via scipy.integrate(), if you can get that. Or you could always write an RK4 routine (or other numerical method), if you want more of a challenge.

Why does it work here but not in my thingie

31 mins ago, by Bernard Meurer
but that only takes me 40 minutes nowadays
Why did someone star this?

Also, for a plotting introduction: matplotlib.org/users/pyplot_tutorial.html, if you want matplotlib.

8:33 PM
@BernardMeurer Made me laugh for 25 minutes.

user218912
alright ty guys :D

@0celo7 Why?

that was a lie
@BernardMeurer did you see Khaled's newest video
it's a 9 minute music video
I guarantee h3h3 will cover it eventually
It's so good

@0celo7 Haven't yet; link?

the song is actually really good, Fantano loved it
but the video is amazing

user218912
8:36 PM
let me try something to see how popular I am here. :]

user218912
star this message if you think I'm cool.

user218912
:(

We the best is such a good message
Oh my god
this is great
He really embraced the meme

Also Walter Moretti would be a good mod. Probably he would be cold-hearted, but his decisions would be clear, understable and predictable.

@BernardMeurer Amazing song honestly. Not meme amazing, legitimately good.

8:41 PM
@0celo7 it's kind of disrespectful though
Did he not care about the PILLAGING of the continent of the bahamas?

:^)
@BernardMeurer Most people don't care about what goes on near India

user116211
@0celo7 right.

@BernardMeurer Watch until 7:42
that's where shit goes down

user116211
Well, reading about Well-Ordering Principle, seems to be easy....

@0celo7 I can't stand it that long, i really don't like the music lol

user116211
8:45 PM
Your new profile pic doesn't look like an Ice Lord. It looks more like a kid ;)

wtf your boy Fantano likes it

@0celo7 I don't like most of the stuff fantano likes
