↑ mentions machine learning/ fast matrix algebra. is it used in physics?

vzn
@AccidentalFourierTransform ah yeah, decades old model, classic, seems to connect ML and physics in deep ways...
its remarkable that some ML algorithms reduce to a sort of "energy shifting" or minimization/ optimization etc...
have you done any stuff with ML?

anyway, a friend of mine is doing her degree final project on machine learning, so I can tell you that it is used in physics a lot
but I haven't done anything so I dont know the details of it

vzn
@AccidentalFourierTransform cool, undergraduate? what degree? what kind of data?
@AccidentalFourierTransform ask her! :P

yes, undergraduate, physics
its about biophysics

3:24 PM
@AccidentalFourierTransform ML is really surging/ buzzing/ popping these days
crosscutting across (nearly all) scientific disciplines

3:57 PM
Is there something that can be done with path integrals that cannot be done with canonical quantisation?
is it really more general?

4:49 PM
Path integrals can be done for theories with no hamiltonian
I like how the paper in the comment I got for CSR is from 2 months ago
Good timing

@Obliv Hai

hallo

How's finals hanging?

5:06 PM
finished 'em
ezy pezy
how much school do u have left before u graduate

I already graduated HS
Our school year is Feb-Dec here
Just waiting to go to College now, probably heading to UCSD

weirdo

nice i hope the transition goes smoothly
are you leaving any close friends at home? :o i imagine you won't be visiting that often?

I'm leaving everything :p
I don't have any family or anything in the US

5:11 PM
bring a keepsake at least :p

I only know 2 people in Cali :D

smuggle your pet with you and document your adventures

I don't have a pet :v

are you bringing your desktop?

5:12 PM
wai

My PC is a really old 2009 huge desktop
that wasn't all that great when I bought it

oh do u have a laptop tho

and that is on it's last minutes because of how many experiments I've done to it
Nope
I only have this desktop
I'll be getting a laptop when I move I think

i feel like a custom built pc and a tiny chrome book might be better idk tho
since u do more than just browse the internet i figure u might need a stronger pc

I need something that runs OSX
Sadly
And I don't game much so I don't care for power
I just need 4 cores so things compile faster

5:20 PM
i didn't know u couldn't get osx on a custom built desktop. i see what u mean though

You can build a hackintosh
on a desktop that is
but I don't want to go through the effort
I'm lazy

1 hour later…
6:23 PM
@DanielSank Amazon just called me for a fight
they updated the firware without me looking and broke my jailbreak
I'll crack this again even if it's the last thing I do on this god forsaken earth

6:45 PM
Jeez, dude.

@DanielSank They started it, all I wanted was to have a picture of the ocean as my screensaver

So confrontational.

7:00 PM
Aww I'm just teasing you. You need it.

The teasing you mean? :p

7:11 PM
@ChrisWhite Should I go to work today?
Be my magic eight ball
mine broke

user54412
"Try again later"

Hmmm
Maybe it's a metaphor
I should try to go to work later
alright

user54412
actually I'm off to work myself

Great, now I feel guilty
Alright alright I'm getting my shoes on

user54412
The don't do shoes in SD :p

7:14 PM
No shoes in SD? Why?
Dan wore shoes when we met and he's in CA
No, wait, did he?
@DanielSank Did you wear shoes?
Sandals, brown sandals

user54412
To fully experience socal, you need sandals (for formal occasions), or better yet nothing

@ChrisWhite But I have a weird ass foot man

user54412
^ the possibilities for parsing that sentence...

What's the difference between Wightman and Osterwalder Schrader
Except for being Minkowski/Euclidian

7:27 PM
@BernardMeurer I wear sandals all the time.
Even when backpacking.

Q: Why is the electromagnetic spectrum called the electromagnetic spectrum?

ET DeathwingI was just wondering about the etymology of the electromagnetic spectrum. We were studying electromagnets in class and I asked my science teacher why the electromagnetic spectrum was called the electromagnetic spectrum, she said i would find out when I was older but I really couldn't be bothered...

Off-topic?

I get so happy when I remember these details right, makes me feel young
@DanielSank I don't even own sandals

@BernardMeurer For the love of everything please use commas.
Or parentheses.

@DanielSank And kill the joke? Never!

I have a weird ((ass foot) man).
I have a ((weird ass) foot), man.
Very different meanings.

8:07 PM
@Qmechanic Er .. because it is a spectrum and results from electromagnetism? I think that if it has a place on Stack Exchange it probably belongs on History of Science and Mathematics or English Language & Usage.

Q: Can we have some MathJax functions pre-defined?

Quantum spaghettificationCan we have some MathJax functions pre-defined so that it is easier to write. For example: \ket{\psi} giving |\psi \rangle \braket{\psi_1}{\psi_2} giving \langle \psi_1 | \psi_2 \rangle \f{1}{2} giving \frac{1}{2} \l giving \left( \r giving \right) etc I know each one of these alone does n...

9:10 PM
@ACuriousMind You there?
@DanielSank Are you good with kinectics?

9:46 PM
@BernardMeurer You're better off just asking the question.

@DanielSank There's no question yet
A guy just passed me at the makerspace and asked if I was good at it
I said no
so I asked you guys
:p

@BernardMeurer what why?

@BernardMeurer That's a pretty vague question.
