3:00 PM
Are you a dad?
That sounded like a dad joke

I'm a researcher
to know the good, you must know the bad too

I like dad jokes, though
I said your joke was terrible, but I laughed

I got pretty desensitized to them because of how much time I spend on reddit, imgur and other public internet places where jokes flow like tea in my cup
looking forward to the time when people start making better jokes and forget about cheap pun fun which quickly wears thin
looking forward to reading them
have you spent so much time setting up the blog that you haven't had a moment to post anything?
I guess it takes a long time but most people just settle with default wordpress themes
doesn't ghost have any nice themes you could use without additional tweaking?
hmm
ah
reminds me of when I kinda wanted to make a game in xna but ended up developing a game engine for half a year
but now I know how to c# so it was worth it
still wanna make dat game tho
I wonder if it would be safe and fine to sell an open-sourced game on steam, while accepting public contributions with no shame

I don't wanna end up like notch making minecraft and then people modding half the code base to improve performance and fix bugs
feels weird to me
why not just accept help if people are willing to contribute for free

3:12 PM
it'd totally be fine
you'd have to get your contributtion terms laid out though
otherwise you'll have issues of ownership

@ton.yeung the game will be slower by default and result in overall worse experience, whereas if they decided to accept public help, everybody would have a fast official version

@ton.yeung like "by committing to this repo, i revoke my ownership of this code" or something
IANAL

I wonder if github allows such stuff
but I guess he just didn't want any legal fuss
there are "mods" that don't change the vanilla game logic, but optimize some very performance-wise important algos
bethesda decided to remake skyrim so maybe they are including those fixes, idk
not exactly, they're making a single moddable version for all three platforms, with improved graphics
everyone gets mods, but by default it looks better than before
I say that is a grand improvement, especially considering not everyone is aware of mods or wants to browse mod sites and figure out which ones they want
this was a major issue for me when I tried to diversify minecraft coz a lot of mods don't work well with each other
so I have only spent maybe 3 hours playing minecraft
don't starve had lots more to offer and I played for a few weeks with a friend until we got so damn tired of the game
oh yes
> Minimum Requirements:

Java 6 Release 45
there are many alternative minecraft-like games with more base content and different gameplay twists which bring some purpose to traveling, add quests, npcs, interesting enemies and biomes, etc

@Hakase why didn't they just port it to linux as well?

vanilla minecraft is just too basic for experienced gamers

3:23 PM
i'm really disappointed -.-

Q: How to download skyrim from steam and play on ubuntu

powell4076I recently bought Skyrim on Steam and did not know that it can only be played on Windows. I was wondering how can I play Skyrim on my Ubuntu computer?

idk if that works but doesn't Wine solve all windows games problems?
or just play inside a virtual machine
use trial?
umm I've never had to email anything to use windows on trial forever
it just starts nagging you to enter serial key after a month, but it doesn't stop working or anything
idk if that's strictly legal but I haven't heard of people getting busted for not entering serial key in time
schools maybe, companies probably, but not regular people at home
huh

Sam
imgur.com/ylmDIDA
What is this anime called?

3:29 PM
@Hakase vm is just because you lose too much performance. wine is better, but you still lose performance. furthermore, not all games work in wine (although skyrim, at least the vanilla one, does)

@Sam check those 4 links
@Armin I guess it's not financially profitable :/

@Hakase well, i don't think so, the people grow more and more unsatisfied by windows and most don't really realize that macos is also free...
so the only alternative they have left is a linux dist

I've heard bad stuff about windows in terms of spy shit they're pulling in windows 10 and trying to push spy updated into 7 and 8, but I think XP should still be fine :)

@Hakase you have to find a way to make the game not functional if you just compile it, but also so, that steam can still distribute everything necessary without any edits (because i don't think steam is able to do that)

is there a reason why you can't just unplug your pc from internet when you boot into windows 10 and play there?
I think one major reason has to be linux driver support from both AMD and Nvidia

3:33 PM
@Hakase except that xp doesn't get any updates anymore xD

who needs updates really

@Hakase well, that requires a reboot and all my disks are encrypted with luks, so i can't dualboot with ms...

I haven't read one bit of info that says any of these updates are really important or improve anything
aside from constant flash updates with their security patches, but I have that disabled by default
get an external drive and boot from there
or just use a usb flash drive and disable swap file so it doesn't bottleneck the performance
there have to be proper liveusb windows images out there

but then i still can't use my normal hdds... and then i still need to reboot...
in the past, i wanted to learn linux, and had a dual boot system, in the end, i only used windows
nowadays it would be the other way around xD

99% of gamers don't have the issues you're describing

3:37 PM
99% of gamers don't use linux with luks encryption

obviously

In computing, the Linux Unified Key Setup or LUKS is a disk encryption specification created by Clemens Fruhwirth in 2004 and originally intended for Linux. While most disk encryption software implements different and incompatible, undocumented formats, LUKS specifies a platform-independent standard on-disk format for use in various tools. This not only facilitates compatibility and interoperability among different programs, but also assures that they all implement password management in a secure and documented manner. The reference implementation for LUKS operates on Linux and is based on ...
and i heard lots of stories about the win10 boot loader overwriting the existing one with its own...
so after every windows boot, i have to reinstall grub...

I've read that as well
shouldn't these encrypted drives be unusable by windows though?

and i tried once to install win 10 and had lots of problems, first it didn't let me install because my pc didn't have the necessary specs (but it has them)

unless there's a small unencrypted section with the boot loader
maybe get a newer installation iso, these problems are usually fixed in updated isos

3:40 PM
then i made a vm, dd'd the image onto my disk and enlarged it. afterwards, win10 always had problems either with graphics card or processor and would shut down after 5 minutes
and the necessary drivers were installed
and all updates installed
the image was downloaded on the same day ( or the day before) via dreamsparks

have you tried disconnecting all your linux drives and installing win10 on a single formatted drive?

yeah, i wanted to completely reinstall my pc, so i removed all partitions of my inserted drive(s)

it's an .exe so maybe not

honestly, i don't want windows anymore
it kills all my productivity...
and not because of games, because it is tedious to work with...

idk what work you're doing with it if you just want to play games on it

3:46 PM
i don't want to reboot, because i'm lazy and impatient xD

I'd recommend getting a separate computer if it's that bothersome for you to switch up hard drives or if windows doesn't want your hardware

or just ignore windows and complain that game developers make their games windows exclusive...

I haven't even played skyrim so maybe pick other games that have linux versions

i like tes, and i played skyrim in the past...

never played a tes game in my life

3:47 PM
i was just complaining because they did a re-release and didn't make a linux version
morrowind was the best
it was hard to understand when you first started it, but after learning it, it was so much fun

user image

I've played Gothic 1 and 2 and that was enough of that sort of genre for me

gothic 1 and 2 are not like tes

I'd rather play more smaller games than drown in just one for months
I mean it takes hella time
I don't want it
and I won't commit to MMOs because of that

oh, a gothic 1,2, night of the rave and arcadia marathon would probably be shorter than a single tes game xD

3:51 PM
ye that's what I'm talking about

i don't like mmos because of other people... they expect you to be at least somewhat online...
*night of the raven
although a night of the rave addon for gothic would be funny as hell xD
BUT there was a medieval metal concert in gothic 1 xD youtube.com/watch?v=A5_941tL5uo&ab_channel=MartinL.

hmm nostalgic
but damn the graphics were shit even at the time

who cares, it was a great game
lots of fun

2001
ok maybe graphics were ok

and made by a german developer, so i didn't have to listen to some shitty translation

3:55 PM
I remember some big monster getting his ass stuck in a rock coz of collision bugs
you could run around rocks and enemies would get stuck, and you could just poke them in the butt with a sword until they died

yeah, good times...
the mine crawler queen was especially easy to bug

there was also a bug with wind spell where you could tap the spell button quickly and it would not consume mana when casting

you just stood there in the tunnel and she was too big xD

oh ye I remember that

@Hakase did you read my message about the open source game?

3:59 PM
in one of the two games I remember running smack in the middle of orc camp and running up a very tall wooden post, and the orcs wouldn't be able to chase me up there so they gave up after a bit and returned to their patrol routes, but I had overwritten my only save file at that moment and it took me 3 or 4 days of unsuccessful attempts to finally get away from them safely
@Armin um not sure
no autosaves back then was bad

@Hakase well, you would have to make sure that the compiled version on github wouldn't work but also so that steam can simply distribute the installer...

I think it's solved by some simple "if steam.connected == 1" api check and if not, just say "please run the game via steam" and exit

very tall pha... sorry, post? taht sounds like the orc city in gothic 1

oh maybe, I don't remember well which part had what

what about people wanting to fix/improve something and trying to test it? they'd have to constantly exchange the binaries because of a simple change...
i really like gothic 1, 2 + addon
@Hakase and that line would be pretty easy to delete as well...
the only way i think this would work is api keys...
but i don't think that steam can handle third party keys..

4:04 PM
@Armin well, it's not exactly like it's hard to hack other games
you just replace steam.dll with the known hacked version and you're good to go
the game just wants a positive response from it which it always gets

@Hakase well, but hacking an open source game is something anyone can do, when they can use google

pirates gonna pirate
there's no need to worry about that

basically every game on GOG has no DRM so every time there's a GOG release, there's basically a free official version on torrents minutes later
doesn't kill the sales

yeah, because torrents can be watched... if it was legally on github, it would be different

4:07 PM
people know they're supporting the developer with their money and there will be no updates if nobody buys it
I don't think so
well, idk how torrent traffic detection works

but there will be updates, because it's open source xD

well, they might as well be third-party mods
not a lot of people have the commitment or proper vision to follow the intended spirit of the game
many games have huge problems because there isn't a single clear feel they were designed in mind with
and that's official
think of what some fan could slap up from dirt and clay
there were unique exceptions but it's not a common occurrence

yeah, but that is a totally different problem, that might also happen to you, when you are still working on it...

idk if I could easily agree with most changes people would make on their own, simply because I have my own vision and they might not share it
but mods would be very welcome
it's still too early to think about specific implementations and what will be moddable so this is just abstract thinking

4:16 PM
@Hakase if you simply want an easy modable game, publish the interface on github...
an easy way to integrate mods is to load some libraries that contain some classes that extend some interface...
you can load the libraries and the classes via reflection and thus allow for an easy way to mod things...

Q: Conditions to obtain Mangekyo Sharingan

Just Do ItI was reading this answer and it got me thinking, how can Sasuke obtain the EMS, if Itachi's eyes were in worse condition than his? Itachi's eyes were losing their light they weren't in "good" state to be considered a good replacement. How did they heal when transplanted?

my problem is I probably won't be able to cover all the possible performance issues and bugs myself
it would probably make things so much easier of people who'd wanna help out wouldn't have to decompile and guess what code it originally was
afaik decompiled code is much less readable than source

well, i don't think that something proprietary can be made completely open source without a considerable amount of piracy...

maybe there will be a precedent like that before I publish my code, so we'll see
as I said, look at GOG sales

but that isn't open source...

4:21 PM
hmm

when your game is open source, i can download the code, compile it and you have no chance of finding out, i have it

same with GOG releases
no DRM means nobody knows who downloaded it from torrents

but with torrents, they are traceable because you upload the stuff yourself because most clients don't allow completely shutting off the upload

but the game developers don't have access to either information
so there's no difference in that regard

not the developer, the publisher...
and they have attorneys that look after that stuff...

4:24 PM
publisher? there's no publisher's code
attorneys shouldn't be capable of figuring out who downloaded a pirated copy if the developers themselves can't know that

nope, but they are responsible that the game is sold and not stolen

unless you're self-publishing it

and in germany, you get letters from attorneys when you download some torrents...

right, "some"

technically, it's still the publisher xD

4:25 PM
not all torrents are illegal

yes and legal torrents aren't watched...
because noone is interested who downloads ubuntu via torrent, because you can't get any money off of it...

idk man I haven't dealt with those situations but I'm interested in learning how they (whoever) watch torrents

but you can get money if someone download some game...
when you start a torrent, you see who uploads part of the torrent
at least the ip or url
and then you make a look up, because it's a legal issue and isps have to comply to them...

from a cursory google search, I see that it is possible to detect torrent traffic based on some guesses

before you start scamming people because they upload some illegal stuff, in most countries you have to have the permission of the copyright holder that you are allowed to send letters in their name

4:30 PM
I think I can see a way to avoid these problems
I'd have to consult with potential distributor staff to confirm tho
and there's a long way to go until then

what language will you be using? @Hakase

c#

hmm... please test it with mono xD

I'm hoping to get some community help with things I don't know
one of the goals is to make the game a sort of how-to for many things
for example, there will be more or less abstract documentation.SE site which explains how to do stuff in general scenarios (I think they also do examples but not sure) and my game would be a practical example

ohh, cool

4:35 PM
it's a grand dream, idk if I'll be able to achieve it but I'm gonna try

and mono is simply an alternative of .net for linux and mac
Mono is a free and open source project led by Xamarin, a subsidiary of Microsoft (formerly by Novell and originally by Ximian) to create an Ecma standard-compliant, .NET Framework-compatible set of tools including, among others, a C# compiler and a Common Language Runtime. The logo of Mono is a stylized monkey's face, mono being Spanish for monkey. The stated purpose of Mono is not only to be able to run Microsoft .NET applications cross-platform, but also to bring better development tools to Linux developers. Mono can be run on many software systems including Android, most Linux distributions...

ye I know

are you writing your own engine or are you using an existing one?

> mono being Spanish for monkey.
kono mono!
@Armin engine is gonna be completely custom
for the physics I have in mind there's no existing engine that would do

4:38 PM
wow, then you'll be busy for more than a year probably...

I've already been collecting ideas and knowledge for a few years
now I wanna learn the things that are hard to learn alone
but I'm not sure how
getting a full-time job in a gamedev company almost guarantees exposure to only very narrow scope of work, so that's not an optimal way to learn
still researching how collab game projects could be good

yeah, and programming an engine without any foundation (part of engine, like physics) is way harder...

I've tried to stir up some noise in the gamedev room yesterday but they all seem very reluctant to actually start doing anything
they have a game jam idea floating around but all the time I was trying to get anybody started on it, they all kept explaining to each other why it's not gonna work instead of actually trying

well, maybe i can help, as soon as project rider is a bit better...

idk maybe they were right and it wouldn't work with them

4:42 PM
and when i help, it will be multiplatform as well xD

@ton.yeung I don't know what exactly you mean or where to find one
@Armin rider?

@Armin code.visualstudio.com/Download is this not good enough?
imo it's the best on windows but I haven't seen it on linux

@Hakase i've tried it some time ago... i wasn't really impressed by it.
and i really like jetbrains products

@ton.yeung they seem too big for me and not in the genres I'd like to get into
I think I'd be most comfortable with smaller games the sizeof FTL
Risk of Rain, FTL, Crypt of the Necrodancer are pretty small games
small indie games
successful ones

4:47 PM
@Hakase how about a short an easy game to develop? like dwarf fortress or a paradox game?
jk

haven't played either so idk
joek is lost on me :p

never played df, but pdx games are pretty massive

problem with small games is that the teams are pretty tight and don't want anyone else interfering or "helping" (or at least that's what I think)

and pretty shitty in their first release compared to three four patches later

maybe not that one, but it gave me an idea
I could probably browse some desura or other indie game distribution catalogue and seek developers looking for help
as in the game you wanted to make or the kind of work you're looking for?

4:52 PM

@ton.yeung Aye
Sup?

> The game will be pay-to-play, with players purchasing "credits" to fund their gaming time.
>:/
and it requires to log in for a demo version

Yes
At the moment

@Mad you've been away for a long time

@Hakase I lurk a lot
Work's been busy

4:54 PM
ok are you involved with that game?

@Hakase I am
@ton.yeung Will be, soon.
They run code on their servers, CPU is expensive

how deeply? what are you responsible for?

The game started out free but they couldn't keep up the costs.
@Hakase Oh, no, I'm just a player.

oh I thought you were in on development

@ton.yeung They have a pretty thorough article about it
And the server-code should come out in about a month or so

4:56 PM
are you guys interested in making a small game together and trying to shove it onto greenlight?

@Hakase depends on what your idea is...

@Hakase I want to say that I am, but I don't have much free time these days :(

in general surely...

I'd love to get that experience but I don't think I can pull it off alone, and I think in a group it would be easier to learn a lot about the whole process

yeah, i haven't developed a game either...

4:57 PM
@Armin I have my own idea for my own game but that's different and it's much bigger than I want for this project. So no. But I think we could probably try something that game jams do.

i started several times with multiple engines but never got far... -.-

sometimes you don't even need an engine, just a physics library

Q: What are the names of Kagami's parents?

blake harrisonakerzanime or no anime, everyone has parents, what are the names of Kagami's parents, I really wanna know.

@ton.yeung like swamp vs soil vs road?
Or walls and pathfinding?
