12:00 AM
but I have no idea about either of it regardless :P
other then gossips going around that each anime ep costs an avg of 100K

that's why that guy ^ won't get an "intelligent" answer here

I don't think "intelligent" is the right word for it :)

yea but that's the one he used :p

was it? let me check again

not sure if intended or…

12:03 AM
"I'll just wait and see if someone can talk about it intelligently."
on the comments oh
yeah that was not a very smart way to talk, he was probably mad people were attacking him for his question being offtopic
perhaps a young guy just dreaming of making its own Crunchyroll

there's the convenient piracy
good luck with crunchyrolls

and you don't even need to worry about ripping or translating, hi fansub groups

I'd rather just send money to the author/maker instead of this middleman site/producer bullshit

You mean CR? well they are officially licensed, so the author does get its cut

12:07 AM
the only platform that has made it relatively easy, simple and cheap to pay for anything on the internet is Steam

LOL
yeah steam is not that bad
and Twitch :)

I don't want the author to get a cut, I want them to get all of the $10 or however much I'd spend on a season of anime
if it's good, it'd be $20-25
if it's 7/10 then maybe $5

LOL
and how is that not a cut

but they get even less than that
which is bad

you're not even whiling to pay him the full amount regardless of the quality

12:08 AM
coz I want them to make more and better
the "full amount" is bloated because of DVD/BR distribution agency and licenses

first at the point they sell the rights to a publisher they won't get any other cuts from it
unless their contract specifically says otherwise

I'm just trying to apply the game prices to anime seasons here

so all that 20~25 or 5 goes to the publisher regardless

how much would you pay for a medium quality game?

so in a way you're already paying the middleman

12:10 AM
a triple-a title or an indie game that is okay

depends on what medium quality entails
is Kamidori to you a medium quality game?
or what?
@user1306322 that is far too groundless to base on

ok what games do you know

for example, you're trying to compare BF with DN

battlefield and death note?

duke nuken

12:12 AM
lol ok

lol death note
it depends on a lot of what was invested on for you to be able to base how much that game would cost
specially considering how good the graphs are
story
and all other efforts
If we are talking strictly to manga related games I would think kamidori is a medium one

I know none
let's try a more popular analogy
hmm

You're miniaturized and put inside a blender that is turned on, what do you do?

try to seductively make my way out of it

12:18 AM
jokes aside, this blender situation is designed to be hopeless and I'm not sure what purpose this example serves

:( was a joke

no-no, let's talk about it
you could just sit there out of the blades' reach and wait for somebody to turn the thing off, notice you and freak out because mini-people are not a usual sight

well the point was to see what kind of idea you would come up with on a desperate situation.

or you could just jump onto the blades if you know there's nobody coming to turn the blender off and save you

as in a Key to nail interviews

12:21 AM
if you're a "fight to the end" kind of person, maybe try to climb out of the blender cup
but the walls are slippery and you can't do it because it's designed to be unclimboutable

you wouldn't pass the centrifugal thing

then you could try to jam the blade and maybe cause a fire or something

@Taisho yes, very positive, thanks

which would most likely get you killed

12:22 AM
@Prix yes, very negative, thanks

lol you're the one jamming the blades here
@user1306322 still waiting for this

you could try to tie your clothes into a rope, lasso over a blade's bending and risk crushing all your bones by dragging yourself around the blender cup hoping that the centrifugal force will push you out of the blender

brb have to go down sign some stuff

probably will tear your hand off rather than drag you out though
you could also try running around the edges trying to knock over the blender, but it's also hopeless because it was designed that way
in short, it's a stupid test coz you'd probably have your iPhone on you, which you'd use to call someone for help and then try to explain how the hell you got miniaturized and put into a blender
I suppose this question was designed in the 80's or something when only car phones were the most mobile type of phone
let's move on to a more popular analogy
let's take a really good game as the top marker
let it be Portal 2
it's got good story, interesting puzzles, great atmosphere and nice visuals
most games don't have all that
then
Borderlands 2
it's kinda like Borderlands 1 but… not as fun the second time around
overused key aspects don't make it look good
it's a triple-a game and cost around $60 on release
EA games…
all triple-a, all okay, none really very good
cost more than any other games
coz EA does whatever they want
indie games

I don't know any of these games you're talking about
do they have cute girls?

12:32 AM
Don't Starve

I was not putting that as an analogy for you to digest I was putting that as a joke to break the thinking

@LoganM no, they don't

and of course it was not supposed to be a real thing, it was a comedy movie

Then I don't really care either

lol

12:33 AM
@Prix yes, i know, but I decided to break the hell out of the thinking in response
ahem
Don't Starve is a fine game by an indie studio
it doesn't take you any set amount of time to "win", it can be played forever of you wish
most AAA games have a Story mode
the classic single-player experience of video games
most games like that cost around $50 on PC and $60 on consoles
but Don't Starve and games like it cost around $25
and they are often on sale
but Don't Starve is a high quality indie game
there are many more independent studios that release games of much poorer quality and charge less, accordingly

lol "high quality" but it doesn't even have cute girls

most games that pass the Steam's popularity threshold cost at least $10

hard to believe anyone will buy it

Current Players Peak Today Game

285,458 735,438 Dota 2
101,129 167,265 Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
46,991 75,899 Team Fortress 2
40,319 51,216 Garry's Mod
37,817 61,426 Unturned
37,312 46,928 Sid Meier's Civilization V

13,121 19,217 Robocraft
13,067 23,554 Arma 3
11,256 15,217 Borderlands 2
no cute girls in sight, millions of players

12:38 AM
(also I know you're joking, I am too)

:( Amazon is so evil to me they don't give me free shipping

@user1306322 As I've said before, just proves gamers have terrible taste

most games from that list are pretty meh

Obviously if they don't have cute girls

Dota 2 have a item stores that produce millions of dollars
how can you say it s a 10 bucks game based on that

12:39 AM
TF2 did it first

lmao

dota 2 is free to play

yes it so what?

also TF2 was $10 in the end

still makes million bucks

12:39 AM
this is another selling model
we're talking about "pay once" model
coz we wanna make an analogy with anime

then why you listed f2p

can't exactly buy hats for the characters in the series
did I?
you said Dota 2 first

because you listed it

and it's an irrelevant example

@user1306322 there

12:40 AM
and that list was directed at Logan
don't mind that

oh

ok so the cheapest games usually go for $10 and they know they're not anywhere as good as some of the triple-a titles released by major gamedev studios

TF2 is a rather an old game
and it was a bundle out of Half-life

indie games range from $10 to $25

and half-life back in the days was not cheap
it is today

12:42 AM
you could compare that to one-shot mangas from new mangakas
that is valve stuff, they're special
lol you could try to compare Naruto to Battlefield if you like
both are popular but both got fillers and basically repeat the same things over and over
if you paid a lil money each time you played a game like Battlefield, you'd probably end up spending about as much as for every chapter of a long-running manga by the time you're tired of that game and the manga is over
I'm not sure how much each chapter of Naruto cost, but I'm sure it's a significant sum if you count the total price of all chapters from the beginning to this date
anyway
this isn't what I wanted to talk about
indie games mostly have pretty low ratings

yes unknown authors, unrated, and others related things

only the best can afford to be sold for $20-30

not really no

u have examples?

mobile games that require you to buy items have a pretty high monthly income
for example

12:48 AM
mobile games are an entire other industry

bug village

it's like comparing regular manga to visual novels

nope its the same thing
you could make a indie game with the same model
if its a hit

I just can't get back on track with this talk

:P bad analogy but essentially your questioning is the payment models imposed

12:50 AM
ok the best games out there cost $50 and they take about 15-20 hours to complete because we're only talking about single-player games that cannot be played forever
other games that are sold for as much and have a similar playthrough length are less often sold at full price, but rather on sales when they go for $25-35
it's as if a 9/10 game asked for $50 and people gladly paid that amount and then a 7.5/10 game asked for the same $50
of course gamers wouldn't want to pay that much, they'd wait for a sale

what I'm saying is you can't expect all customers to pay the same standard amount for all works of the same genre because obviously they have different quality
of course there are mad fans of, say, Golden Time, but I'm never paying full price for that kind of quality!

yes but again there are quite a few manga that should be sold 10x more than it costs and are sold on standard prices

you can buy 10 copies of it then

which makes no sense

12:55 AM
why not?

why would you buy 10 copies of the same thing if you can only use one yourself

what makes you think it should be sold for ten times its price?

the same logic you proposed something not highly rated should be sold for less
as sometimes something that is also highly rated does sell for less than it should

not that is should be sold for less, but that people won't buy if for that much
what you're saying is if it's super good, people will want to pay more for it
and these are the real scenarios

so you're saying you would like to pay for that 10$ manga 100$ just because you liked it, to favor the author

12:58 AM
well duh, of course

but then you forgot that who gets the money is not the author

how else would he know I liked it and I want more
I'd send the $90 directly to the author
fuck the greedy middlemen

that is if you had the means

But in the end that is a personal feeling and that will be perhaps 10% or less of the people

12:59 AM
usually there are means, it's just that most creators don't want customers to do that because it would worsen the creator's relationship with their current producers
but independent companies and creators who don't have any publishers or producers, gladly accept money that way
for example, check out Kickstarter
crap never gets funded and the best projects receive many more times the amount they asked for

true but that is because they couldn't find a place that would accept their work or had faith it would be a hit and not just waste of money

8.3 times the amount they asked for
coz fans know they can do it good

"fans" means you already have a establish line of a product
but something new is not always that easy

there are examples where new companies acheived similar success thanks to their marketing efforts
of course there are also examples where everybody thought that it's gonna be great and it turned out to be a complete disaster
(duke nukem forever)

and things that don't even get funded at all
but that is what that place is for

1:05 AM
because of low publicity and poor marketing

good ideas usually get backers

and not interesting ideas

there were some nice projects with good marketing that never became reality there aswell

because they're not interesting?
or that there are better projects leeching off attention at the same time
what I originally wanted to say is that I'll be willing to pay as much as I subjectively like something, disregarding its asking price because it usually doesn't match its objective quality
if a new AAA game costs $50 on release day but it's not good enough for me to be willing to pay that much, I'll wait for summer/winter sale and buy it for $15

You want a "Liked our games, donate here"

1:14 AM
it already exists for a few years
humble store™ taxes the $15 for about %30 and the additional amount gets to the makers unchanged
if anime had that shit, we'd be swimming in the stuff we actually really liked

@user1306322 its also possible that they would be focusing so much on that, that it wouldn't be something new anymore but rather a "oh, that again"...
or it would just decline

well I can't say "cute girl" shows are getting more diverse…
there is a market for everything
if a company makes a mistake of releasing something bad, the customers will let it know by not buying their product
and next time they'll either do better or try something else
everyone was sure that Double Fine studio would release a wonderful new game if they supported it, and so they did

Q: Is this image from an anime or fan art?

user7821I found this image a bit ago and I found it again on my computer. I thought about it all day and I can't remember if its from an anime or fan art. I'm also curios what anime its from. Please help! http://imgur.com/l9bJbFC thanks!

ok enough gaming talk
gon grab sum t
watch more memochou

1:29 AM
I was referring myself mainly to continuations of a serie
that also point itself to the next one
so if you don't buy that one you wouldn't understand what comes next to some extent or w/e
there is of c the fact one or more products come out bad or people don't like it but that is normal they can just come up with a better one based on the expectations and the such.
but I think having a more open channel to the users is also very important
for instance if SAO aincrad was made more trustfully to the manga
it would most likely have a bigger sales rate

SAO doesn't need to be good to sell well
And even if it was good I'm not sure it would sell better

the thing is not selling well but bursting the hoof with sales
there could have been better examples than SAO but that was the first one that came to mind

Sales are mostly about hype and service. Quality is irrelevant because you're only selling to highly obsessed fans anyway and their demand is fairly inelastic
SAO could have been Mahou Sensou levels of bad and still would have turned a profit
And on the other hand, when an amazingly good show which is relatively unknown happens to appear (e.g. NGNL), they have to jump through all kinds of hoops to even get to 10k sales for V1 while SAO S1 was easily selling in the 30-40k range.

1:45 AM
Seems strange to bundle the two. I mean sure, they're both relatively common needs for a sizable fraction of the population, but surely there are people interested in one but not the other.

Also they seem to be absurdly overpriced if the article linked there is correct

Damn all these identification requests without anime/manga tags :(

first thing they should say is if it's manga or anime

yeah but most don't if I had another 5 points I would have edited
some do say but not as a tag, as a title

1:53 AM
We don't have Anime/Manga tags

and I would prefer it as a tag since then it would be excluded from listing

should enforce strict format
like a list

@LoganM we should for identification requests that are specific

@Prix You mean and instead?

yes

1:54 AM
We used to do that

that would work

− Manga/Anime
− When seen
− Genre
− Plot
− Character description, etc

this way I can ignore manga-identification tags

that doesn't work when user doesn't know if it's manga or anime

but it's a problem because anime and manga aren't the only media on topic here

1:55 AM
also three identification tags would be confusing for new users

have a more generic type than for example

If the asker doesn't specify if it's an anime or manga, you should downvote it.

right now it's as generic and not confusing as it gets

Because that's basically always necessary information

1:55 AM
yes but I can't set it to ignore

3 tags would just be more confusing

if there is no tags

users would definitely mistag from time to time and make it even more confusing

I also have no way to ignore all the questions with poor grammar, but that doesn't mean we need a tag

better just to leave it to us to properly format the core info

1:56 AM
@user1306322 inst that what the community is for, see SO for instance
mistaged questions are fixed by the community to reflect it

it's not the tags that are the problem, it's the contents of the questions

@Prix Nope, they're closed by the community just like everything else on SO

I mean look at them − they have no common format

@LoganM this is completely different than what I am saying
@LoganM nope they are not, if you make a question about php and tag it as php and mysql they will just remove mysql

@Prix I get what you mean, but from experience I can tell that it's easier just to format the contents of the question than add more tags

1:58 AM
or if you make a question about c# but its actually about php they will retag it
@user1306322 the thing is, there is a SO functionality that allows you not to list tag's you have on the ignore
if there is no tag then you can't ignore it

SO doesn't have id questions :P

I would if that was only about manga

@Prix What I'm saying is that you want to ignore a class of questions for which there's no reasonable reason that you should be able to ignore.

ok different topics

It's reasonable to want to ignore specific series because you don't know anything about the series

2:00 AM
personally whenever I see "manga" I just close it and it usually takes me about 2 seconds to spot

@LoganM that's not true, you're denying the sites own features by trying to limit the tags for simplicity

But for ID questions, I can identify a manga if I haven't read it but have seen the anime or vice versa.

I am in no way saying that you need to have 100 tags to express 1 thing
but you could definitively have a few tags

We've discussed this before on meta

(heated discussion among regulars on arqade)

2:01 AM
it would be essentially the same of having Stackoverflow and not having c#, php, and similar tags because it would create confusion to users

Go dig up the old meta posts and add an answer if you disagree

@LoganM that is if it is 1:1

@Prix Sure, if there's no anime you can't identify the manga based on the anime.
What I'm saying is that I don't see a good reason to split the tag based on medium rather than e.g. based on time period or genre.
If someone asks me to identify an 80s mecha anime, I'll just give them a blank stare because that's not something I know about.

lol

But that doesn't mean there should be tags for it

2:06 AM
Use this tag for questions about 80's mecha anime

The medium is ultimately part of the details of the question, not the subject of the question. Just like the genre, time period, art style, etc.

Anyway here's the relevant meta post:

Q: Should the "anime-identification" tag be modified so that it applies to manga as well?

Jon LinThere's an anime-identification tag but no corresponding one for identifying manga. It does seem, to me at least, that manga identification requests are significantly rarer than ones for anime, but I do regularly see requests for identification from an image of a panel or a page from a manga (on ...

Maybe there are others also, but I'm kinda lazy right now

@Prix the problem is that manga is closely tied to anime and there's no telling if you can't know it or if the OP read a manga which was adapted into an anime that you have seen, in which case you're capable of answering
which makes it silly to divide the id tag into anime or manga
site will is more likely to lose answers that way

@user1306322 that's exactly why you would have the 2 tags there are people that care about identifying both and people who doesn't, that feature allows you to use SO's built feature to filter it which you can't do otherwise by default viewing the home page without doing anything else
Those who originally don't answer to manga identification will still not regardless
and they can just show what is convenient for them.

2:12 AM

and again I am not saying you need to have 100's of tags but it can be a little broader on tags for that

dakara… you can't know if you're interested in identifying a work based solely on the medium, because most of the time the descriptions are the same, just swap "watch" to "read"

I don't understand why people always think that the best way to solve problems here is to make us more like SO. From what I can see on their meta, SO has the most problems of any SE site.

dakara... you're denying the functionality given to us.

@ton.yeung Eirin from Touhou 8

2:14 AM
but I can understand why A&M would not care about that since there are so many unanswered questions and users that never come back

what am I translating?

@LoganM just because I used SO as an example does not mean I am imposing hey lets be like them you're far too generalizing it.
@LoganM for Touhou 8 I assume

Why would you use SO as an example when they don't have ID questions? Wouldn't it be better to use Scifi or Movies & TV which do?

I bet they also have that problem

@LoganM because the example was not related to id questions but the TAG and its built in functionality

2:16 AM
Touhou = eastern way

people might not be able to remember whether they are looking for a movie or a cartoon

8 is the number after 7

manga and anime are too closely tied to divide them into separate id tags
a huge portion of manga has been adapted into anime

@Prix It is specifically about how we should use the tag system best for our community. SO is a different community with different needs

each SE site is different from others

2:20 AM
@LoganM to every its own.

@ton.yeung Bullet points are from Touhou 9, not touhou 8

I know some of these words

th8 does have time points, which are superficially similar. Maybe you're thinking of that?
