For high traffic posts it can sometimes require as many as 10

Other reason not to upvote it is that the person didn't even read the help center or tour or anything

It says "no recommendations" all over the place in the help center and tour, so there's no good excuse for asking for them.

true, but people hardly read rules regardless and closing their first topic sometimes discourage potential users, might not be the type of user we want but in some cases could have been some nice users

I agree but I don't think we should change the policies for new users.

Then we'd just have those users complaining later instead.

If we want to let 1-rep users chat in here (preferably after some form of approval), that should be a feature request on MSE (though it probably already is). Right now it can already be done with moderator approval, but it's not always convenient to get a moderator.

But we shouldn't deliberately sabotage the main site just for the sake of allowing some (likely to leave anyway) users to enter chat.

6 hours and 85 questions in, it's pretty clear to me that Moderators SE has just become a huge echo chamber based on the Stack Exchange style of moderation. Even questions which aren't themselves specific to SE are getting rather SE-specific answers. In many ways it's even worse than MSE, since MSE at least doesn't have the facade of being applicable outside the network.

Ideally a Moderators site would be based off a cost-benefit analysis for each decision in the context of your goals for the site. Instead, we're just getting parroting of various SE policies under the assumption they are universal, when in reality every moderation policy SE has is influenced by ideas about what sort of culture we want to foster here, which is very different than most other communities.

After reading about half the questions on the site, not once have I seen an answer be written which would apply to e.g. 4chan. Few would apply to Reddit, Tumblr, Facebook, or any other major internet communities. Not once has anyone referenced Robert's Rules of Order (the foundations of the theory of moderation written 100 years before the internet), or really any other source on moderation apart from personal experience.

I don't even think I've seen anyone do a real cost-benefit analysis. That is to say, they're below the level of this general audience talk by Joel Spolsky, which honestly is far more useful anyway (paired with a bit of common sense) than all the content of that site put together if you want to understand how to moderate SE sites.

The viewpoint seems to be that questions asking for such an analysis are too broad. The questions they want are the ones of "Is there a best way to do X?" which is on topic if and only of Stack Exchange moderators do X, in which case the Stack Exchange answer is considered to be the correct answer without serious analysis. There's really no reason for this site to go public at all at this rate, because the only answers are SE answers and SE users can all easily access it while it's private.

I suppose that's to be expected when you have 115 diamonds among the committed users (not counting SE employees). Doesn't mean the site is remotely useful or that I'll participate.

I mean, SE is a very closed environment. If you don't like it, you're essentially exiled.

It would make sense that anyone answering questions there, anyone drawn to be an expert on that site, would share that opinion.

I'm a bit past being disappointed by SE. After seeing the state of ELL, I've just withdrawn into Anime.SE permanently, basically.

There's a possibility of involving myself in other communities, but not likely.

At least it may give me some clue as to the inner thoughts of SE CMs and whether they're also victims of island syndrome.

If they actually think that's good content for the audience of the whole internet, then they've diluted their viewpoint to the point where it's basically just SE.

I kinda want to break in and ask a legitimate question based on one of my "friend"'s stories about moderating a site which he described as "like /b/, but with more gore porn and less kittens". Would through those guys way outside their comfort zone. But it's really just not worth the time.

I also find it hilarious that within a few minutes they had the canonical "Who should be our moderators" post up on meta, but still no one has volunteered and no one seems inclined to do so either.

A site full of moderators and no one wants to be a moderator.

Though, now that I think of it, it makes sense. You have to be an assertive enough moderator that you can stand up to, and deal with, other assertive moderators.

I wouldn't even mind doing it if the site were remotely good. But I'm not going to moderate it if they're just going to make it into the toilet of MSE like it seems to be heading.

Anyway I'll probably check back once or twice in the next week or so, but I'm not very happy with the initial results.

On this site, clearly a lot of participants are starting with the assumption that they know everything about SE and their stuff can't but be good. Yet the result so far is average at best.
