12:38 AM
@AdamElsodaney It's Open at present.

12:54 AM
@Dorothy It took several months but a 'purge' of new Qs in a niche in SO did, to my surprise, seem to make a difference. (I was not expecting to 'detect' a difference, rather that months of tedium would have made me even more cynical.) "Setting a good example" may indeed encourage posters to take a little more care.
Though with so many of ours 'one hit wonders' this is not likely to have as much effect for TSE as for SO. It also seemed to teach/encourage other users to help out a little with edits.

@pnuts I know, I call them hit-and-run; I don't know whether they even come back to look at the answer. When they don't, I think mods should be able to 'accept' a good/great answer, particularly when it gets lots of upvotes, or when the OP does comment that it was exactly what they needed.

Related. I think we just have to live with an extremely low green tick ratio. And be patient - some Accepts can come FIVE years after the answer (on SO)! Mods are not required to be (and should not be required to be) topic experts.

1:30 AM
true, but I've seen the OP say TY that's the answer, and the person who provided it ask them to 'accept' and it still doesn't happen. Not mine, necessarily, but so many here give precise, comprehensive answers, loaded with references and expertise. As you know, it takes some effort, especially when offering resources, not opinions. Some do those opinions-as-answers, the loosey-goosey chatty bloggy kind LOL, but not often.
anyway, not to be worried; it's just nice to be able to chat a bit, as one can't do it other than here. I participate in Expats a bit, Seasonings (although that has a mod who believes he owns the site and it's very uncomfortable), and beer/wine/spirits just recently... quelle surprise, it's VERY mellow there :-)

I'm afraid the culture here is ingratitude.
I'm not the only weirdo! One always votes to keep Open, one never votes, one does nothing but vote (a bot, I suspect) ...

2:10 AM
good one, and how very odd. Despite the handle you choose, and explained, I don't put you in the weird category. In truth, I think we're all a bit wack, but the anonimity of the internet has created a new culture that allows all sorts of bizarre (und arschloch) behavior. I haven't used anything but my name, and added my FB connection only so that others can message me, should they want to come out from behind. Mind you, I do you Burne-Jones as my portraitist; I'm just not into selfies :-)

I do seem to get on better with people in the flesh!
Do you know which gallery Gertie Lewis lives in?

3:40 AM
Gertie and Katie, her sister, are in private collections. I saw her in Birmingham in the 70's (oh, yes, doing my 19th Century architectural history at Univ of London Bedford College). I'm a big fan of the Pre-Rafs

@pnuts where do you live btw pnuts? Your name is one of the few missing on the Travel.SE meetup list :)

@JonathanReez What, and have a horde of TSE users descend on me seeking revenge for 'flooding the front page' - you'll not catch me with a "meetup list" :)
@JonathanReez I'm still not inclined to (Gayot has 'had a go' at me about it too). OP has revisited (TSE) and not bothered to provide feedback, so for that OP I am not inclined to try to help. There is an A there so it is not as though impacting the stats that Mark monitors. My 'A' is too much guesswork to be of use to others (feedback from OP would be a different matter).

Q: Where can one apply for a UK visa in a proper embassy?

LouisIn Helsinki, UK visa applications involve a visit to what appears to be a temp agency. The UK has a perfectly nice Helsinki embassy, so this isn't an issue of remote location. I had assumed that this was because the whole process had been outsourced, but a recent Vice article suggests otherwise...

@pnuts are you on a crusade against and combinations?
IMO should be discussed first

No, trying to fix [standard-visitor-visa] Qs - and attending to (most) everything that needs attention at one time. Otherwise there would be even more edits.

a mod can do it in one click though
is it the same tag bug?

@JonathanReez Was "discussed" - a year ago
@JonathanReez Seemingly not. That was requested two months ago.
@JonathanReez Yes.

@JonathanReez There's a meta thread at meta.travel.stackexchange.com/questions/4359/… about pnuts' campaign to remove hundreds if not thousands of country tags

I have no campaign to remove hundreds if not thousands of country tags.

7:27 PM
you're not removing it from immigration questions tagged svv or b1-b2-visas or visa-waiver-program? it certainly seems like you're doing so

At the moment I am trying to fix broken tags and, to reduce the total number of edits required, attempting to fix (almost) all other issues with those posts at the same time.
Is your point that you should have added [usa] to your question? It's not too late to do so :)

can you fix/merge dupes such as this zimbabwean-citizen and zimbabwean-citizens ?

Supposedly, yes - that is "synonymisation" but [zimbabwean-citizen] is also broken. I have 'fixed' its Usage guide and tag wiki but not yet 'merged' the two - which seems to require an edit to do so.

Or remove the singular? Both show the same 8 questions.

7:43 PM
They show the same eight through the synonymisation (the part that has now worked) but are actually still separate tags.

understood

Or maybe no longer - @RoflcoptrException edited those yesterday.
I think you should not be seeing [zimbabwean-citizen] anywhere any longer - except perhaps in the list of tags. Are you though?
Yes, still in the list of tags, but that has always been the case for synonyms (or at least some of them!)

that is where I looked; so I won't bother you/others when the tag is there but the descriptor is not.

8:11 PM
The 'descriptor' on the tag pages is the Usage guide - which should not be visible (except when hovering) for synonyms. However it will also be "not visible" when a tag in use has no Usage guide. There are about 6 such cases at present, other than broken tags.
I don't know why we get a count for all quantities of used except x 1.

8:27 PM
@JonathanReez Might be worth bearing in mind I will have added some of the [uk] [visas] pairs during the period tags were so broken that neither [standard-visitor-visa] nor [standard-visitor-visas] could be added. Gayot chose to add [svv] instead but I avoided that as I thought it had been agreed that all three letter tags were exclusively for IATA airport codes.

8:43 PM
@pnuts Yes, I looked at the zimbabwean-citizen tag yesterday and it should be fixed

@pnuts If I'm elected (although the chances are not good), I promise to fix the rest ASAP
so wait 24h :)

@RoflcoptrException Yes, many thanks - seems to be. (Not everything else yet though.)
@JonathanReez DEAL !!!!

But I believe Dorothy or Rory have better chances... I also have a black mark for too many an edit...

8:59 PM
I very much regret that some voting will be on that basis - and that I will have been largely responsible if so. Up to 259262 views for a single thread TSE is clearly more than the 400 or so who seem likely to have voted this time around.
And Mark: ~8.8m people reached.

Have you noted that we are getting some nice answers from a new(ish) user: travel.stackexchange.com/questions/88823/…

11:18 PM
@GayotFow @pnuts do we have a tag for ?
if not, should there be one?

I'd rather stand back from any of the many visa tags, where possible :)

alright

11:36 PM
Hi. Is this for off-book chat?
is it possible to do private chat or PM? How do you do this?

Not possible. SE has nothing to hide.

interesting. I remember doing a chat once where it was just me and one other person. Maybe the room was just empty.

There are some exceptions - eg mods can make confidential contact (until I disclose the content before reading that it is confidential!). And there are gallery rooms, where only those invited can chat (but what they say is still public). And most people can create a chat room where it is unlikely those not invited will even know it exists - but is still public.
