19 hours to go in the election, people - vote now or no complaining :)

You mean I can't demand a recount?

Or claim voter fraud :)

Shucks.
Impeachment?

(prepares executive order)

Q: Poll on mass editing / 'flooding' / re-tagging impacts

Mark MayoWe've had more than one discussion on whether the flood of edits is acceptable. Mods have been flagged about it and it's even come up with discussion with mods from other sites, and the general consensus has been to come up with a community view on this. So in an attempt to obtain this, let's g...

@MarkMayo Is it worth clarifying that we're talking about edits to old questions (if that's what we're talking about), not the standard initial cleanup and tagging of new questions?

@chx what's a school-ish?

chx
it's like a school except it's legally not
it's legally an association of homeschoolers

Clouds are gathering over @pnuts' and mine edit floods :)

9:51 AM
@chx nice work with the Istanbul mystery :)

I should've checked the website first
but I figured it out from expertflyer :)

it does look like the website presents it in a kind of confusing way if you don't dig into the details to see it's two airports

I don't know much about visas being able to virtually go everywhere visa-free for 90 days or more, but I am in a situation where I might want to get a visa. I'm curious, however, if it's a good idea to open yourself up to investigation and possibly getting turned down on a technicality, making future travel more complicated.
I wanna ask if it's worth getting a visa for a stay that is planned to be close to 90 days, where 90 days otherwise would be visa-exempt, and there is no problem financially in going out and back in to the country to extend the stay.
Would that be on-topic?
or even a good question.

@AmaniKilumanga which country are you talking about visiting?

The country is Taiwan. I have very strong personal ties there (wife), and especially for the period I want to go there (birth of my son). But I also have a full-time job in Japan, where I am living now.

9:58 AM
If you don't need a visa then don't apply for one. The purpose of visa waiver programs is to simplify travel for regular people. Take advantage of it.

chx
@ZachLipton yes, and if you come from Google Flights or whatever way there's another which provides even less warnings
@ZachLipton I added that too

I think it could make a good question, but I suspect some people would declare it opinion-based and want to close it
since nobody can really say whether you're likely to get a visa or not
some countries are pretty tolerant of visa runs, where you can leave and come back in a day and get another 90 days visa-free. others less so. asking how Taiwan treats that situation would be useful information for you

chx
the good question IMO is what's Taiwan's opinion on visa runs

hah!

chx
like, Schengen has rules which completely rule out visa runs
but, many countries roughly in that region are fine with it
so

10:00 AM
@JoErNanO I was concerned about flying there with a return ticket that would be close to the 90-day mark. Would that raise a flag somewhere maybe...? Dunno.

chx
that's the question to ask
@AmaniKilumanga you have all the right reasons to be close to 90 day
@AmaniKilumanga but , as i said, ask whether a visa run is ok

@chx thanks. I'll try that.

chx
I certainly have no idea.
I am very sorry but the only thing I know about Taiwan is that half the things in my apartment are made there. (Yes, my apartment looks like a computer shop after a bomb exploded.)

Q: What is Taiwan's stance on visa runs?

Amani KilumangaI am planning on going to Taiwan for close to 90-days, a period I am eligible for visa-free entry for. Would it be OK (or possible), for me to temporarily fly out of Taiwan just to get another 90-days, as necessary, e.g. do a visa run?

@AmaniKilumanga might be worth mentioning that it's to visit your Taiwanese wife for the birth of your son. it may make no difference, but sometimes immigration rules get weird around family ties like that

10:08 AM
@AmaniKilumanga I see your profile says you work as a Software Engineer in Tokyo. How were you able to land that job, if you don't mind me asking? :)

@ZachLipton will do
@JonathanReez job hunting site for students fresh out of uni

wow, just like that?
Always been my dream to work in Japan

I have been living in Japan since 2008, so I attended a completely Japanese university though

oh, okay, that's a bit different

10:21 AM
@AmaniKilumanga I don't think it would. You can stay for up to 90 days visa-free.

10:32 AM
9 more hours to go until we know the new moderators

10:55 AM
My bet is on Joernano + Dorothy
but maybe I'm focusing on the Meta/Chat sentiment too much
@GayotFow @JoErNanO join the UK visa chat I've created: chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/54386/…
I've posted an idea there on how to manage them

a lot more people vote than the 15 or so regulars you see here in the chat

Look at @RoflcoptrException pretending like he doesn't already know the results!

@JoErNanO are you talking about a conspiracy?

2:48 PM
@RoflcoptrException Don't pretend like you don't know.

@JoErNanO are you ready to take oath?

@JonathanReez Take oat? I've already had breakfast, thank you very much.

3:06 PM
Is this how you treat your voters? With puns?

3:31 PM
@JonathanReez How else?

4:01 PM
@pnuts how on earth did Canute get into this?

I fear I may have broken @MarkMayo's poll and his goal of coming to some kind of conclusion a little bit by promoting an answer that boils down to "let's keep having this discussion all the time and every time someone wants to edit something"

6:59 PM
Yeah, I feel like we're running in circles
I also feel that me, pnuts, Joernano and hippietrail are the only fans of mass edits
so honestly I think it's best if we just agree on a limit per "round" and close the topic

1 hour later…
8:03 PM
Congrats @JonathanReez and @JoErNanO

8:53 PM
@RoryAlsop Thanks man. Where is that "ban pnuts" button when I need it?!

I see a "delete pnuts" button ;)

9:12 PM
Lol! The pnuts section is over next to analytics

Why is there no "eat pnuts" button?

9:31 PM
@pnuts I am at your service. I will start with the tags when I learn how it works. I will also try to go over the Meta and try to bring closure to some of the topics.

Oh dear. People of Travel.SE WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!

No, no, the idea was to use mod tools to prevent pnuts from having to do too much work

9:49 PM
I'm already displeased enough about a certain election I voted in last November. Please don't make this one somehow turn out worse!

10:01 PM
First thing I see when looking to chat is two new names underlined in blue: @JonathanReez @JoErNanO congratulations. I have no doubt you will be committed and fair mods to Travel SE. Thank you to all the other candidates @Dorothy @RoryAlsop @cnst and Joel who can't be tagged, my hope is that running has motivated to be even more active on here, because one does not need to be a mod to make great contributions on here.

10:40 PM
congratulations to the new mods!
