I will keep the bounty thing ongoing
I will always have three bounties open
Even if I don't get a single upvote, the 2100 points I want to spend is enough for three months or so

I really wonder what the best way to encourage new users is
I'm not sure bounties are it, tbh
I think interesting questions and answers are

I agree really

the site is doing well.. if you sreach using google, and there's a match in travel.se, you will get it on top of the results..
that's what we need..
before, i used to ask common questions that people search for..
this way, we can increase the chance of having new users..
like the pink lake question, windows xp background image question, etc.. i asked a few.. all of them got very high views..
i am sure some of these users ended up registering.

Yeah!

12:19 AM
@Berwyn how did u find out about travel.se?

We need more windows background questions

@Berwyn c'mon, it was just an example of questions that get high views.. via seach engines..

I was looking for an alternative to flyertalk and milepoint and places like that
which just end up annoying me
I agree though! More eyes is good

we are doing good in the schengen area questions..
google will always direct you to here

did we put a brexit tag on @JoErNanO 's question about the UK situation
that'd help with google

yes
just type "Schengen question" in google, you will travel.se as one of the top results..
I guess that's why many questions about schengen on almost daily basis...

I have some sympathy for all these visa questions
I got a single entry visa to the US after having multiyear ones and didn't dare to ask for another one because I was afraid the trajectory continues and the next step one would be refusal
Instead, when I finally did ask for one in 2007 I got a ten year one
And now I need no stinkin' USA visa or ESTA :)

Damn you. I just posted the same answer as your comment
@HeidelBerGensis

chx
although people said it shouldnt be a problem it certainly was, having a B1/B2 visa from a visa exempt country AND a Nexus card.

@chx when i was in my 20s.. i used to get shitty validity periods.. now, in my 30s i get good periods,, it seems that eu and us consider age..

It was very funny because they were looking for ties to my home country and by the time I asked for a tourist visa I had none!

are you french?

chx
No, originally Hungarian. I fixed that when I could and now I am Canadian .

I didnt know that being hungarian needs fixing :D :D

is there a surgical option available for that? ;)

chx
Sure it needs
That's no joke, I needed two surgeries due to being bullied as a kid

12:33 AM
:( ok it's not so funny when you put it that way, sorry

chx
I usually say I had the bad luck to be born in Hungary and I carry the physical and mental wounds from there but I am Canadian.

ur mug shows that u r a big dude.. you look like a bully..

chx
I am just a big teddy bear :)

r u like from a different race than the one in hungary? i heard these dudes are quite racist.. but again my source is tv, not reliable..

chx
Well, I am jewish but as a kid the problem was that I had brains
While people around me didn't

12:35 AM

I have managed to gain entrance to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/… and from the elementary school I went to in forty years I was the only one...

@chx me and you are like opposites..
i am a muslim.. born and raised in saudi..
in the second most holy place for muslims.. but in that city, we are really really tolerant.. we are not one race there, not only arabs..
one of the few cities with mixed races..

chx
Just one piece of information to imagine the kind of elementary school I went to: at the age of 13 one of my classmates literally bitten me. At 13. Not 3.

You'd be more tolerant if you'd open a few pubs :)
I spent a couple of months in Riyadh and coke grows old after a couple of weeks

@Berwyn I can't live in riyadh

I don't drink alcohol. Never did. Likely never will.
But I don't like coke either :)

I give up for a month or so every so often. Just to prove I'm not an acolholic
I don't like sweet drinks though

@Berwyn i dont drink, not because of religion.. not at all... i used to, and i stopped.. since 2001.. i found out better things at that time..
then i stopped the "better things" as well..
now, i am fighting to stop smoking.. doing well..

Luckily that's one thing I never started
I despise cigarette smoke. My parents smoked like chimneys

my uncle, who is like 300 years old, smoked all his life, he never died..
so, i hope i am like him..

I'll ask my great, great grandson to look you up

12:44 AM
@Berwyn cool, u have grandsons..

No

not sure with my life style i will live long enough to see my grandsons..

I reckon it will take a couple of generations to find out if you were right

@Berwyn i got it.. but late ;)

:)

12:46 AM
@Berwyn i am thinking to add an answer.. that shows the way to do location history in all major OSs..

Right. Heading back to hotel. Last day on the job. Flying back tomorrow

or will u just edit ur answer?
iphone does it too..

Yeah, it could do with a better answer
Does it?

u add it to ur answer

I'll delete mine. I don't have time to research it

12:47 AM
i dont have time too
don't delete it..
i am doing some MVC stuff..
got like a zillion tabs open..
talk to you later

Ok, added one about iphone

good job!
bye for now

I think the user might want something more than just smartphone location history which isn't that wonderful, but more of a trip log what can plot stuff on a map and make more of a little scrapbook type thing or something
but location history is useful advice too

I look forward to your answer @ZachLipton . I'd like something to do that but only if I'm the only person that can access it
I disable everything on my phone that it is possible to disable

I'm not sure what's out there. I'll answer if I come up with anything

12:52 AM
Trouble is there a million trip log apps
I'm not quite sure what the OP really wants that he didn't find in an app

yeah and most are more like "keep track of your mileage" type of things, not "make a travelogue"

There was quite a nice one for car trips

a google search for "travelogue app" shows some promising candidates, though I don't have time to sort through them right now

more for business mileage logging though
doing anything for the holiday weekend?

that looks nice, though more targeted toward expense reporting/tax deductions than keeping track of a trip
not too much, a BBQ and some relaxing mainly
you said you're going back to the UK?

12:55 AM
Yes. The way it works is good though. It just automatically detects your trips
yes

that's handy

anyway, it's only for driving so no good for the OP
anyway. later

@TimMalone I have addressed your second concern on the meta post and responded sort of to your first concern and that of @Berwyn but that is of course harder to address. I would err on the side of trusting users what to vote on but of course there can be no guarantees. During bounty bonanza one could bounty any question and answer but that was due to public scrutiny, which is impossible for voting. Still I believe the positive effects (and users voting truthfully)
would outweigh the negative ones. And of course if someone is voting on anything, they could just downvote on those posts they disagree on.

A: How can I not get electrically shocked when handling my laptop in an airport?

Jamie HanrahanI've had this issue at some security checkpoints and not others. The difference, in my observation, is in the conveyor belts. I've never had it happen at a checkpoint where the rollers under the belt are metal. If the rollers under the belt are plastic (I think it's Delrin or nylon), it happens...

@mts i had a funny story about this static shocks..
long story short, in a long flight (14 hrs flight), I was opertaing.. all passengers were sleeping, i took a walk around, and this little kid is awake in his mother's lap while she is sleeping.. he was looking at me, so I just wanted to make him smile.. so i raised my hand to give him a hi five.. and then he got choked real bad! he screamed and his mom woke up while i am holding my hand close to him.. she thought i hit him :/

@mts, I like your voting bonanza idea but an every day commitment is difficult to me, as well as for some other regulars here.
I can only access the site from home, not having access to internet, and not having time, when at work. At least once a week I go visit friends or relatives and will not be home till about 30 minutes before bedtime.
I hope you do not expect me getting into sleep shortage and do my voting while I need to be sleeping.
Several of us are traveling long distance quite often, also blocking them off internet effectively.
But if you look at weekly or monthly voted stats, you could 'allow' up to 5 or even 6 times the daily limit per week or 25 times daily limit for the month. Or just go for the highest 'per month' for the winner.

12:18 PM
I don't think 4 - 5 minutes and a bit is sufficient to do that... BUT... OK, click the button that says 'reopen' and the question will be examined, it should take not very long. — Gayot Fow 2 mins ago

@Willeke Yes, of course, we expect you to give up sleep entirely for the greater good!

I only read the first sentence later and understood that you mean shocked ;)

Q: UK visit visa refused twice

Saman AhmedI had applied twice for a UK visit visa in January for the purpose of sitting the PLAB 2 medical exam , but my applications were refused , though my cousin who is a consultant doctor in UK-NHS sponsored me for the visit. The first refusal was because I didn't provide a bank statement, and the hot...

if you think it should be. I do not :)

Ah, I thought you asked for it to be voted 'reopened' but you just suggested that if someone else wanted it looked at again he could ask for it to be re-opened.

I closed it but the OP says it's unique
Plus the answer given is shite :( which is worse

Each OP thinks his circumstances are different, but likely most are mistaken.

@Willeke Yes, a truth

If the answer is just wrong we are told to TD, but if it is dangerous we can vote for deletion. Do you think it is that bad?

1:57 PM
" preferably with a notarised statement from your cousin."
it's dreadful
"Instead, you should get a written, notarised and translated confirmation from your employer stating your position, your income, and the fact that you get it in cash."

I upvoted (not realizing I should not,) so I can not down vote unless it is changed.

horribly misleading to the OP, who will waste time getting it

Q: Utrecht houses market

Ahmed RaghebI will move to Utrecht this month, and I am looking for a furnished studio with my own kitchen and bathroom, my question what is the average rents for studios in Utrecht ? And any tips while searching ? Also, Any trusted service already helped you before in your search ?

this is your area
Utrecht.

Not completely, I have never rented in Utrecht, though my sister used to, and I have not rented in the private scene for the last 20+ years and the rules have changed since. I did give a good 'answer' as a comment, as I feel it is not an TSE Q, but expats.

It has a great etymology

It is like trying to rent in a polurar city in the UK (outside London) Hard to predict the market unless you are trying to rent yourself.

mts
2:05 PM
@GayotFow can you point the misleading out in comments to the answer? That would justify my downvoting of it, the other two parts of it make sense to me.
I also left two comments on the question
the OP is fixated and unlikely to listen to any advice against his intentions

@Willeke do you have a resource for the etymology of Grogingen?

mts
@GayotFow I read those in chat but those should be left as comments under the answer so I can upvote your comment and downvote the answer and to be useful to other users and the answerer. I have seen it but others will not see it here (even though they could)

Groningen? No, why would I? Not my part of the country.

If the employer stated outright that salaries are given in cash, and they still refused you based on that, that could be a serious error. That's why you should contact the embassy or visa Office and discuss the issue — Crazydre 2 hours ago
ridiculous

mts
Sorry, I didn't express myself clearly. I was hoping you could leave another comment to that answer, pointing out where in the answer there is bad advice (i.e. the thing about the notarized statement as I get it). I have already upvoted two of the comments you left on the answer

2:13 PM
@mts OH! let me look, but please don't d/v

mts
Great

mts
+1 on the comment. not sure if downvoting the A is helpful... great comment, thanks!

@mts If you want to answer it, tell me and I will reopen it with the hammer
You can add the bit to address the hotel cancellations

mts
@GayotFow no intention to answer, I think it there is no added marginal value in that Q with respect to others, but thanks
also rather busy over the weekend and a couple of things on here I'd rather want to do first

2:19 PM
@mts I think it's a duplicate but am passing along to the community to vote

mts
See my comment that I left on the Q, I think it should be closed as unclear if reopened and otherwise likely your bank statements one is an answer to it so would be duped again
with the added stupid move of the OP to cancel his hotel bookings which apparently weren't even necessary
so I'll happily pass on this one

@mts LOL, it's going to get harder and harder to find a non-duplicate

mts
Because you did good work getting some order into UK visa Qs
have a good afternoon folks :)

@mts there are only about 14 reasons they will refuse on.

Funny
I don't disagree but I didn't know we had a process to do that automatically

@Relaxed, looks like a reaction on a flag. Automatically would have been almost instantly, this took about 15 minutes.
Long enough for a couple of people to flag it.

I absolutely love I was able to answer "How far I can go, and how much time I need to take?" oh, 6000 km and two years :D

Is that actually the case, thought? The guy probably had some special authorisation, if only to stay into the country that long...

@chx Didn't that guy cross deserts and things though? i.e. no wall within eyesight?

chx
I have no idea whether there's a wall across the desert or not....

I got the impression there isn't 6000km of standing wall
but maybe I was mistaken
I'll just walk it and check. brb

There's no standing wall for 6k km, he had to pass areas without. Pretty nice how-to in his blog. Had a longer-than usual visa by getting letters from his national chamber of commerce but still had to do the occasional visa run to HK (but I assume that was when HK was still easy to get visa for China) @Berwyn @chx @Relaxed
@GayotFow I left a comment for the fixated guy, he did upload another refusal note and like I read it the ECO did want to help but could not accept. Please correct me if I said wrong things in the comment. travel.stackexchange.com/questions/72697/…
Thank you
