Next question: "are there toilets in Russia?"

"Are there prostitutes in toilets in Russia at night? And what do I wear to see them?"

"what happens if a Russian prostitute flushes the toilet whilst airborne?"

man, why do they overthink it..
awkward and embarrassing moments about cultural difference is a cute thing.. u will have loads of stories to tell..
if u r really unlucky, u might get killed.. but you will make it to the news..

some people are more tolerant of "might get killed" situations than others

but do they wear clothes, have breakfast, sleep and go out in the evening, is maybe a bit over the t

12:08 AM
like the guy who peed on a Buddha statue.. he thought it is just a president or something.. he almost died..
@Berwyn i wouldn't be surprised.. actually, during my years.. I found out that white people are the ones who usually ask funny questions when they are coming to the middle east for the first time.. I find it cute..

I suppose it's good to ask. Providing you don't have internet access at home

so, this guy Reza.. he seems like a guy from pakistan, travelling for the first time to a whole new culture.. he wants to know everything..
what to wear.. where to get a prostitute..

always my first two questions

@Berwyn asking someone from the country is the best you can do.. internet has all kinds of wrong shit..

Tell me it ain't so

12:13 AM
arabs are fucking retards when it comes to travelling.. ask me! i am one..
they want to go the most "arabian" area in every country they visit.. they want to eat arabic food only. so why the fuck they travel?
makes no sense..
Anyway, i always made fun and get pissed off questions about taking electronics like xbox or iphones to another country..
now, i am going to indonesia (my 2nd home) and i am taking an xbox with me..
shit.. can't ask it.. i will downvote myself and vote to close it..

1:07 AM
You remind me of all the people who wanted to take me to the American restaurants in Europe.

1:40 AM
Did you enyoy MacDonalds?

3 hours later…
4:24 AM
@Berwyn McDonald's was more interesting than Burger King because the menu was more customized to local tastes (veggie burger? Burger with cucumbers on it? McKroket?).

4:35 AM
+ beer!

there's a taco bell around here that actually does sell beer

That's a bit shocking for the US

Q: Reason for a UK VISA refusal

sathaI have a plan to present my research at the University of Bristol between 10-16 July 2016. I am a lecturer in Government University in Thailand. My wife also applied for Tourist VISA. She would like to have a vacation while I am staying in Bristol. My wife did not have a full time job. She is cur...

Seems like they submitted a random photo as evidence and just about nothing else

how can you be "self employed working in a cafeteria?"
I'll grant I don't know Thai employment law, but it seems off to me

5:17 AM
@ZachLipton This is the most awesome answer possible
+1 for that
@Berwyn please put an answer also

thanks!
I'm aware that question didn't strictly need a 'visas' tag, but there was a bronze tag badge in it for me so I added it

@ZachLipton The badge software will prevent accumulation for the person's own tagging

you'd think, but it just gave it to me

you'll see :)

I just answered a pretty awesome visa question
2
A: Have you previously applied to enter or remain in Canada?

BerwynYes, you have applied to enter Canada before.

Did take quite a bit of research!

5:22 AM
+1 for that!

:) Not quite as good as yours

@Berwyn please put a great answer for the UK one. @ZachLipton has set a high bar for it

I don't think I can add to that. It seems pretty comprehensive!

@Berwyn No, there's lots of room for more answers

Why?

5:26 AM
@Berwyn Because @ZachLipton left room for you to cover the TECHNICAL aspect!

I didn't cover a TECHNICAL aspect?

@ZachLipton Yeah, but you have a wonderful answer. It's fine, you left a piece for @Berwyn to cover.
I am trying to encourage people!

what TECHNICAL aspect exactly? do you mean citing section blah blah blah of the immigration rules?

I am actually trying to big up you guy's rep in visas

er...

5:30 AM
@ZachLipton No cause for hurt feelings!

no hurt feelings; I'm just personally curious what these technical aspects are

@ZachLipton LOL, that's why we should encourage more people!

You're not the only one...
Quoting 4.2a and 4.2c?

@Berwyn u b the MAN!!!!
It's a code to be translated into English

ah, yeah that would be a good idea

5:34 AM
a+c means the applicant is planning to go underground
Also she cited V4.2 - V410
But nothing from V3...
also....
@Berwyn you there?

yes
just compsing something

@Berwyn good!
@HeidelBerGensis hello my brother!
@ZachLipton given that it's so early in the morning, it's possible you will cap out on that answer.

Ok, if you insist, I've posted an a guess at what you menat
meant
@GayotFow Let me know if I'm on the right lines

5:51 AM
thanks, that looks useful to me

@Berwyn +1, yes, keep tarting it up. I love the technical stuff!

I was basically googling for 4.2(a) "gayot fow"
:)

@Berwyn you can add a paragraph explaining what Appendix V is.
Get TECHNICAL :)

Ok

There stuff in the archives with a+c
@ZachLipton one tip for you... There is a special 'issue' with Thai women, sort of a corner case to always keep in the back of your mind

5:57 AM
yes?

@ZachLipton sorry, I was afk. To continue........
Thai women are associated somehow with an issue......
Lots and lots of them have applied for UK spouse visas
it is in their past
Some have tried multiple times
And when they finally get married to a Thai man, they do not say anything about it

Ooh

And ECO's in Thailand respect this sort of privacy

I see

So they do not mention it
in their refusal notices........

6:04 AM
what lovely discretion

They do not mention it because it can bollox up a good marriage

Is there not a secret footnote, to indicate to the observant reader?
Refused under 4.2(z)

But ECO's do not trust them because of multiple spouse visa attempts

That's a can of worms

And the husband is totally clueless about their refusals
Because ECO's throw out any crap reason they can think of......
@ZachLipton does it make sense to you???

6:08 AM
indeed it does
obviously we have no idea if that's what was going on here
in this case, the fact that she submitted photographs as her proof of employment seems like a pretty good refusal reason even if she's never applied for a spousal visa

@ZachLipton of course, there's no idea, BUT...
@ZachLipton Yeah, but I'm speaking more to the general case
When you read a refusal to a Thai woman, please keep that 'issue' in the back of your mind.

sure, it's interesting to know that's a thing

It is indeed

And when you see a refusal notice and you say WTF????
That has a bunch of crap reasons.....
And the reasons appear to be overly captious.......
Then it's time to READ between the lines......
Does it make sense going forward as something to put in the back of your mind???

Do they think it's likely that they'll get to the UK and dump their husbands?

6:14 AM
@Berwyn yes! Work as prostitute or pole dancer or marry some 90 year old Brit
I mean honestly, if you saw an app where they had serial refusals for spouse visas?

I guess. But if they were 5 years old and she'd been married for 5 years and have 2 kids, I might think they'd 'reformed'

@GayotFow yo

6:30 AM
@HeidelBerGensis peace be on you brother
@Berwyn ECO's are also very sensitive to age differences with Thai's; it's only something to keep in the back of your mind
@ZachLipton your answer is canonical; you can add a link to this travel.stackexchange.com/questions/6545/…
and say that it is OUT-OF-DATE!
The rules changed since then and so did the guidance!

@Berwyn That's a good one

Turns out quite a few airlines allow it

@ZachLipton @Berwyn since it's out of date, you guys can also ASK/ANSWER a canonical about "Should I submit air tickets for a UK visa application"
It's free rep :)
You have two really great answers, and you have the rep to vote on them. Please read them and select one as 'accepted' with the check mark! — Gayot Fow 42 mins ago

People accept answers??

6:43 AM
folks who are active on SO and pop over here sometimes do
people who come here with strange incoherent visa questions never do

TSE has an appalling accept ratio. It's disgraceful
Don't let it discourage you, you guys are on the badge trail for the 'visas' tag
@ZachLipton @Berwyn you guys can copy and save that refusal notice to your desktop and then put it in a folder

7:04 AM
@ZachLipton are you ok with having another answer? No hurt feelings?

no hurt feelings at all

mts
7:22 AM
hidden gem when reading up on chat about Thai women... since ECOs are discreet, I guess also we are? As in "when in doubt err on the side of helping people"
@Berwyn thanks, I am trying hard not to condone bestiality in here

7:36 AM
@mts The biggest clue to the whole UK visa thing is that ECO's are basically friendly.
People don't seem to get it
I had a young university grad sleeping on my sofa for about 6 weeks while she got herself set up in London
She went on to her first assignment in Cairo
And then to Moscow for a full stretch
And now she's getting her ticket punched in the policy unit
Hoping for an assignment in Turks and Cacao
She was not my gf by the way
But when you see a refusal out of Cairo, all kinds of red flags should pop up in the back of your mind :)

@Berwyn I commented on your answer
But now I understand
The Kitchen Aid is probably worth more than €150 anyway...

8:01 AM
I can't help but think there is some dangerous advice going on here: travel.stackexchange.com/questions/72560/…

Like lying about the length and purpose of intended stay in the hope of getting a six-month admission?

Yeah

Just upvoted your comment
Hadn't followed the discussion since then but I was also tipped off by the word "need" when reading the question the first time
Best case, it's not the right way to present things, it just sounds bad

I'm writing a new answer now, with some actual references

8:25 AM
There we go, answered

@CMaster +1, very nice!
love it
The other answer is not well informed :(

The few people I find myself feeling quite sorry for
are those that have thought they get it and not
and get refused
because they walk up the IO and go "One 3 month visa please"
To tell the truth, I'm not sure this couple will see the woman let in if they are honest
but that's because I'm not sure what they are planning is really allowed
but if I can see that for a 5 line question
one has to think the IO has a good chance of spotting it too
although maybe she's a lot more "with it" than he is
@GayotFow - your "access land" question - do you already know the answer to that, or do you genuinley want to know?

@CMaster I don't know the answer. But to clarify, it's a charity based event and of course English Heritage is a stakeholder in it.

Because I'm not sure I'm right on it
well, I'm sure that "right to roam" doesn't come in to it

@CMaster I need to suggest some ideas for this answer
worry about the battlefield later :)

8:39 AM
They should marry and go for the EEA family permit/residence card... while it last!

Ooh, that reminds me
meant to point out V4.10

@CMaster no, a few things to bring out before I can comment that the other answer is wrong
At the top, point out that the standard visitor visa is a type of entry clearance because there's no connection and the OP may not get why P28 is relevant

good point, forgot to say that the UK calls visas "entry clearance" a lot

@CMaster And you need to tone down or eliminate the stuff about minimal answers because that sets off the IO's alarm that the OP is playing cat-and-mouse!
The best practices advice for a landing interview is that the IO is doing his job and the person should be HELPFUL. Answer questions using the natural meaning of the words, and the purpose of her visit is to MAINTAIN AN EXISTING RELATIONSHIP

@GayotFow yes, "minimal" answers is probably a bad idea
but volunteering extra (and often largley irrelevant) info beyond what is asked about often seems to land people in trouble

8:49 AM
@CMaster No it doesn't. That's just internet lore.
It's extra information when they are playing cat-and-mouse
The most cases involve a contrivance
@CMaster ping me after your edit and I'll leave a comment for the OP

in terms of rep given away in bounties. You should defs give him a prize as well

mts
10:19 AM
@CMaster who should get the win in total rep given in bounties!

@mts oooooh

@mts You just elected yourself as the official prize-giver. Could you count the total bounty amounts of everyone please?

@JoErNanO you are one lazy man

@JonathanReez Be happy.
@HeidelBerGensis I am the Team Manager.
Let other people do the grunt work.

Let me do that later on folks... if no good soul comes around any earlier
concerning loosing rep: I could have been at 10k by now :o

Big hug to @mts for winning the Bonanza!
@JoErNanO let's do it every year
If anybody needs to recover rep, just shout! I can bounty one of your existing answers

thanks @GayotFow and all of you! It was great. Is there a meta post to discuss how bonanza went and for our impressions?

@JonathanReez In Russia?
@GayotFow Why not? We need swag or prizes though.

Q: Proposal: Voting Bonanza

mtsWe just ended the The Great 5 Year Anniversary Bounty Bonanza - CLOSED - mts won and it was a great success. However one thing I personally found discouraging is the low number of votes attracted by the bonanza. In general it has been found that we are not voting enough before. Voting is goo...

@JonathanReez Yeah yeah. "Legal".

Austria now has a chance to repeat the left's worst nightmares :)

How do we know whether people have indeed maxed out their votes?

after Brexit

mts
@JoErNanO this tells me you only did one vote today. Shame on you!

12:36 PM
@mts Where do you see that? I'm genuinely curious.
I just downvoted a spammer.

mts
that page, bottom right under votes cast, 1 vote per month, 51 per week and one for today
flagged as well

@mts Ah. Good to know. Did I really never scroll that far down?!

mts
Did you really only give one vote today is the question!?! I'm at 17 for today, and that was saving some :)

@mts Yup I really did. Haven't been on the site properly yet. :)

mts
Well you have until tonight ;)

12:42 PM
Oh remember those counts are cached.
Also, how about making it "lowest voter is out", rather than "must vote all 40 times"?

mts
Post an answer to my meta Q with that suggestion. I would prefer to do the max though, to have maximum impact. We also all did max number of bounties
True, counts are cached. How frequently are they updated? Could one cheat?
@CMaster are you continuing to splash out bounties? Respect!

@mts There seems to be no information about when votes are updated:

Q: Reliable count of votes that I've cast today

GillesI often want to know how many votes (upvotes and downvotes) I've cast today, so as to know how far I am from the 40 vote limit. In the old days, this information was easily accessible on each page by hovering over my name in the top bar. Sadly, this information disappeared. I now have to load my...

mts
I see. Also sad to see how little gets done on Meta SE.
I guess we'd have to trust users then to not cheat. The activity tab still is a good indicator though.

12:59 PM
@mts It's not cheating I'm afraid of. It's the fact that people will lose count of how many votes they've cast.
We can also think up a dataex query.

mts
dataex only updates weekly I believe
that's why I suggested max out, you are notified when you maxed out
you could also count votes in the "votes" tab on your activity page, but that is not public

1:11 PM
@JoErNanO You can have my TSE t-shirt; if I can find it

@HeidelBerGensis Too generous. But thanks

Q: What to do when "no cars available" in Uber

GlebIs there a way to automatically search and request a ride when there's no cars available for a ride at the moment. In case I'm flexible with my time, and can tolerate an hour or two of waiting. Other than constantly staring at the app? Is there third-party app maybe?

I am tempted to answer take the bus (or a cab) but that's not constructive...

2 hours later…
4:02 PM
the obvious answer is to with you were an uber driver, because the surge would be huge

2 hours later…
5:51 PM
@ZachLipton Surely you're an Uber expert living in their home city!

love it when you only notice your typos after the edit window closes...
I don't use Uber a lot, generally go with Lyft instead

How come?
I've never used lyft

I mean there's not a lot of a difference. Lyft lets you give a tip through the app which is nice

For some value of nice :)

sure :)
lyft is also pretty plentiful here, some cities it's not as popular

6:02 PM
What do the drivers prefer?
Presumably some are on both?

yeah the drivers do both. I think some prefer lyft because they say they can make more money on it, but it's hard to compare since both have various bonus programs

Does lyft have surge too?

the drivers pay lower commissions if they give a certain number of rides/hours/whatever in a week or something
yeah
and lyft has lyft line, which works like uber pool (pay less, share with someone else going in your general direction, hope you don't waste 30 minutes in traffic picking them up)
uber has food delivery here though, which lyft doesn't do
if I need a ride and one is surging I'll check the other certainly

I've never used pool. I can't say I like the idea much

yeah I've used it if I feel like being cheap, but you have to really not be concerned about time
it can work pretty well, but if you end up in traffic going around one way streets to pick someone up, it's a problem

6:11 PM
I've read that drivers don't like it either
There's a web site uberpeople.com ISTR with a driver's forum

I read uberpeople occasionally
yeah because suddenly they have to deal with two customers and one of them is a cranky jerk who thinks he's more important than the other passenger

lots of angry uberpeople on there!

we've got a service here called scoot that rents little electric scooters (like Vespas basically) by the half hour. I've been using them a bunch

6:26 PM
Where are they?

6:49 PM
To clarify, my father (who is not a visa-exempt national) has written in a post online that he wants to fly from Tehran to Edinburgh via Heathrow illegally this way (he "knows People" at the airline and so will be permitted to board without a visa) and settle there through a sham marriage. He's a pig, so I truly want him to get in as much Trouble as he possibly can — Crazydre 8 mins ago
Heh

7:00 PM
Isn't it ridiculous that that Canadian visa question gets a million votes and that one we worked on last night gets next to nothing?

they're scattered all around SF. You can pick them up and drop them off different places too
that's er, crazy. craziness from Crazydre

I haven't seen them. pity, going home tomorrow
Have had family with me this trip though, so not had much spare time

Q: What time do air conditioned buses run from Colombo to Anuradhapura?

Dash YoungbloodWhat time do air conditioned buses run from Colombo to Anuradhapura? When is the earliest bus leaving?

Interesting answer
Seems to be an actual answer if I put it through google translate

Hard to miss

yeah, very interesting

I flagged it for moderator attention. I presume the policy is English only?
Wow, scoot is cheap
Damn. Wish I'd known about it

yeah it's super cheap, and there's a garage with them near my place so I can get to them easily
you have to sign up and be trained in advance, so it's not perfect if you're just visiting for a short time

7:31 PM
can you take a passenger?

Ah
But I'm here loads of times, so might be worth it
Probably have another trip in August, though down Santa Clara way

they have a couple of scoot quads (s.aolcdn.com/hss/storage/midas/d975afb2b63f17f65c70b8857ca872e3/…) which have a backseat with room for 1 passenger, but they're more like little cars, so they aren't so maneuverable and you can't park them anywhere like you can with scoots

Do you need training if you have a motorbike licence?

the only catch is that it's bikeshare style, so you can't rely on one being available near you
if you have a motorbike license maybe not
they use a weird loophole in CA law which lets you rent scooters for up to 48 hours with just a car drivers license, ordinarily you'd need a M2 license to drive one

7:34 PM
Hmm. Says need US licence

oh yeah, hmm
I know they were encouraging people to sign up friends visiting from out of town, so they might work with you if you ask (they're pretty friendly people), but it may be an insurance requirement or something

I got a motorbike licence about 15 years ago. In the UK you can do a direct access licence if you're over 25 and go straignt on a 1000cc bike. Though I bet you can do that here too

I'm not certain how it works here. I know the test is pretty difficult (you have to do a weird circle maneuver thing where you keep the wheels inside painted lines), but you can be exempted from the test if you take a approved motorcycle class

in the UK we do a test with the examiner following you around town
on his own bike
you have to do emergency stops and all sorts of things

yeah for cars they get in your car and you drive around and demonstrate various stuff
it's still pretty easy, as evidenced by the number of terrible drivers
and once you do it as a teenager, you can go ages without anybody ever making you do it again

7:42 PM
Have dropped scoot an email

7:54 PM
cool
app.scootnetworks.com/registrations/new?referral=R5027 is my referral link if you end up signing up :)

2 hours later…
9:42 PM
Got a reply. Due to insurance, only possible with a US licence. Oh well

yeah that's what I feared :(

Probably a TSE question in there somewhere

10:02 PM
@Berwyn just trying to help you reach 10k.. u did a good job in the short time u were here..

Cheers! It undid the 500 I gave out :)

@Berwyn u offered a 500 bounty ? why man..

I was encouraged :)
I think 10k is still doable this month
Nobody's put up a competing answer on the berlin wall Q yet...
But then again, @GayotFow has high standards

@Berwyn u mean i have low standards? :D :D :D

Probably that too :)

10:29 PM
:D

11:23 PM
@Berwyn thanks for clarifying. I've never had cause to take a UK domestic flight so the shared lounge concept is a bit strange to me

It is a bit complicated

indeed

Well, the US has it too. It's just that there's no airside transfer
For international to domestic that is

11:39 PM
right. And most other countries with airside transfer don't have shared domestic/international lounges. There's a international (or non-Schengen) part of the airport and a domestic (or Schengen) part of the airport and controls in between the two
like MUC with its two stories and its LH first class lounge with its very own border policeman inside because the lounge straddles Schengen and non-Schengen

Not sure I know how common it is. Can't recall doing many domestic connections
and it's hard to remember one airport security/immigration encounter over others

they do all tend to blend together
