Q: Which fork is more active, English Wikitravel or English Wikivoyage?

Andrew GrimmWhich fork is more active (in terms of genuine contributions, not spam or vandalism): the English language Wikitravel, or the English language Wikivoyage? I noticed that Wikitravel had some info on ATMs in Ulaanbaatar that Wikivoyage didn't have, and it seemed Wikitravel had more of an edit hist...

Excellent question
Folks at Wikimedia claimed "a slow fade to spammy oblivion" for Wikitravel, but they've severely overestimated how much the average traveler cares about open-source

Q: Recreating Hemingway's Trip to Pamplona (Part 1)

Gayot FowIn about three weeks one of Europe's most widely known events will take place: the legendary running of the bulls in Pamlona, or known locally as the "Fiesta de San Fermín". The city is famous worldwide for the running of the bulls during the San Fermín festival, which is held annually from J...

@hippietrail I have only been as far east as Tomsk, but know Novosibirsk, Omsk, Yekaterinburg pretty well. Go there and ask. ,
@hippietrail Per the standard way things work, I'm sure the Russian consulate in Canberra has both a front door and "back door" for visa applicants.
@JonathanReez I just ran your query, it's excellent work! Thanks and a tip of the hat!

@Berwyn you got 7 upvotes totally free for that visa question. Well done
and @ZachLipton got 8, also commendable.

Q: Shopping at Paris

NormanWhile i can pay "for example" (40-70 € , for a Shirt ), what do you recommend men's shops in Paris, i was thinking of Boggi Milano, but unfortunately it will be closed at Sunday (my only free day at Paris), Please help

Is clearly not a shopping question!
It's opinion-based and too broad...
And very unclear too

So vote closed for one of those reasons.

@GayotFow Was interesting answering it. Maybe I'll do some more in the future if there's anything else left to say...

2:25 PM
@Willeke I did, mind you, but I am still annoyed that this and many other questions get closed with a reason that does not really apply and just confuses everybody

My misunderstanding of the term, but shopping for a question about shopping seems fitting.
I often do not close vote questions as first just because I am not always sure for the reason. But this was a wrong question for so many reasons that I felt right to do so.

It does not, there is a also a sentence and a whole meta-question about it
Indeed but there are at least two reasons that are a much better fit

Vote to re-open and have it closed for an other reason, if you are so concerned.

Please...
I am not that concerned
But there is a middle ground between doing nothing and reopening a bad question and bothering 10 other people

Complaining to me is not going to change anything

2:32 PM
Of course, it will, I hope you read about the whole "Shopping question" thing and pay more attention next time
That's the point, not whatever happens to this sorry question
That's a regular issue with the shopping stuff, that's why I bring it up

That may happen, it may also have the opposite effect as I do take this kind of complaing well.

What's the opposite effect? You are going to abuse the shopping close reason for other things just because you want to piss me off?
That may very well happen but that's an interesting set of priorities...
In the meantime, I will continue to hope we can at least discuss this type of things in chat...

2:47 PM
I must admit I'm a bit sheeplike if I see an off-topic question and sometimes follow the herd in close votes

@chx I guess you don't like Uber...

Neither do I.

I do

I hate to have to use a smart phone to get a ride.

I was in a Taxi yesterday in San Francisco (home of Uber) and asked the driver what he thought of Uber. Don't think he was keen :)

I already find it a problem to getting a normal taxi when I get to my 'home' railway station and the more different services the harder it gets.
And there are very strict rules and regulations on taxis in many countries and uber is not following any of them, claiming not to be a taxi. If they are not a taxi, they should not transport people for money.

chx
3:16 PM
If there would be any sanity, Uber would be banned and the leaders in prison

Uber has been baned in several cities or even countries in Europe, but I fear they have sneaked their way back in.

chx
it's definitely banned here and I am fully supportive of the idea

In the past there was a central taxi telephone unit which you called, they would make radio contact with the taxis and send you the first available. When arriving at the station you would push a button to make contact. Now all taxis in the nation are allowed to drive all over, no single telephone point anymore.
You are restricted to the taxis in the rank, as it is almost impossible to find one by calling.
And the rank is almost always empty when I need a taxi.

4:03 PM
Is there someplace where this fork business is explained? I am familiar with the fork invented at the Tour d'Argent in the 16th century only.

4:31 PM
Open-source projects can be modified and reused without their authors' permission (following certain rules).
If the changes made by a third-party are not integrated in the original project, you end up with two projects based on the same original body of work (mostly, it's computer code but it can be a bunch of text and pictures like Wikipedia).
One or both of these projects are called a “fork”

@Relaxed @GayotFow analogous with a fork in the road.

What would happen if you forked that fork?

@Willeke "if they are not a taxi then they should not transport people for money": I wholeheartedly agree. Fortunately in NYC they have to have cars and drivers licensed by the Taxi and Limousine Commission.

I think a reasonable analogy for forking is taking someone else's book, modifying it, adding a new chapter or two and then distributing it as yours. You would have "forked the book"

@Relaxed If it really concerns you, flag for mod action explaining that it should be closed for a different reason. I did that once on German when a dupe question was linked to the wrong original.

@GayotFow Well I'd be travelling in the opposite direction. Probably arriving on the ferry from Japan then travelling not on the Trans Siberian to Tuva, then exiting to Mongolia. Or something just as crazy (-:
