Based on this question Avoiding crew fatigue on empty leg flights I learned that there are "empty leg" flights or "ferry flights". These seem a good option but I would like to know more about them. Where are these announced? How can one travel this way?

some airports have fancy "water bottle filling stations," which are basically drinking fountains that are meant for filling a bottle instead of drinking

it's a fetish question

mostly it's a way to show how "green" they are by encouraging people to refill reusable bottles using a machine that undoubtedly involved a great deal of resources to produce, but an airport is one of the few places they make a bit of sense

At the end of the day, a fast food worker taking a month-long overseas vacation for a long-distance relationship is going to send up all sorts of red flags to an IO. Maybe, if you interview well and get the boyfriend to provide his details, you can convince them of sponsorship and they'd let you in, but it's got to be an uphill climb. And nothing in the OP's story makes me think she interviewed well at all.
