Props to @MarkMayo for bringing in lots of views with the 'toilet' question. Public curiosity never ceases to amaze!

2 hours later…
2:24 AM
@GayotFow I still don't understand your ID question

2:45 AM
@Berwyn Leave it to lawyers to ask questions. :)

is there some word(s) missing from that question or am I just being dim?
"Secondary: in the chance that I get selected for screening by the maritime division of the TSA, will I need to produce a passport or would it be deemed acceptable for security purposes?"

As I said. Leave it to lawyers to ask questions.

are you a lawyer too?

There is nothing missing from that question it is just too damn complicated.
Nope
I've just had to pour over way too many legal documents.

shouldn't something like "driving licence" be there instead of "it"?

2:48 AM
it means a passport here

i.e. will I need to produce a passport or will a passport be ok?

basically

eh??

Yes that's the question
But as I said. Leave it to lawyers...

that doesn't mean anything!

2:50 AM
What doesn't mean anything?

he either needs to produce a passport or doesn't
not needs to produce a passport or produce a passport

The question is will he need to produce a passport and will that passport be an acceptable form of id.

should the or be an and then?

In common speech pattern it would have been.

oh. you're saying that lawyers use or to mean and?

2:53 AM
No. This form of a sentence is acceptable.
I'm just saying that it would be most commonly used by lawyers.

wow. it does not make sense to me
I usually use "or" to separate two alternatives

Welcome to the intricacies of the English language....
That's why I prefer computers.

I'm not convinced

Q: Bounty Bonanza Interest Gauging and Commitment Levels

Gayot FowJune 2016 will mark the 5th anniversary of the TSE site, to mark the occasion we can run a "Bounty Bonanza". This is a month long event where bounties are offered at an unprecedented level! Regular users will swarm over the site looking to run the maximum number of permitted bounties for the enti...

14 questions
And I never touched Hudson County or Fairfax County so far!
Or Bergen County either
I will try to think up two questions about Weehawken or West New York
@Karlson if you have one about Hudson or Bergen Counties, now's your chance!

1 hour later…
5:01 AM
@GayotFow Not really much of a travel destination IMHO

5:21 AM
From this morning. Tweeting is great publicity

2 hours later…
7:06 AM
@Berwyn correct - that needs an 'and' to make the sentence correct
as it stands, that line does not have a defined meaning. 'Or' in that position requires the sentence to have some other action defined with the passport.

7:50 AM
@HeidelBerGensis please don't vote to delete non-offensive, informative answers by mods (or any other users) on meta! Kinda defeats the purpose :(

@GayotFow I still am not sure what I did wrong on the UK student re-entry question. Can I know how you would have worded it?

8:15 AM
@MarkMayo I was just bothering @mindcorrosive for deleting that answer.. lol. take it easy blonde kiwi ;)

8:26 AM
@JoelDamien I edited the answer. There's not much else to do on it, perhaps a reference to Paragraph 320, or Paragraph 10B, but that's really your call. Put a link to your question here in chat and see what @JoErNanO thinks about it

8:49 AM
If you get some time please have a look.
And Thanks @GayotFow!!
P.S. idk how to properly link a question and make it big
P.P.S I'm getting paid to answer TSE questions lol, does anyone else answer while at work? xD

Q: Item held by customs until I pay tax; what are my options?

FlimzyI just arrived in the UK yesterday, from the US, carrying a piece of jewelry, which I intend to carry with me for the following months before I give it to someone at the right time and place, then presenting it to a special someone. Immigration discovered the jewelry while searching my bags for ...

OP asked her out and she said yes!

Q: Norway: Is frozen chicken widely available in and around oslo? Is the price higher than other capitals like stockholm for example?

user1788092I will be travelling to Norway next month. I was wondering about what is available to cook and eat in the supermarkets there. So specifically: are frozen chicken legs/breasts cheaper than other kinds of meat there? I saw this link which prompted the question: http://www.thelocal.no/20140818/se...

Makes it sound travel-related though...

@HeidelBerGensis Awesome. Glad you like it.
@JoelDamien Looks good to me. You can think of adding an authoritative reference as suggested by @GayotFow for completeness sake.

Q: The Great 5 Year Anniversary Bounty Bonanza

JoErNanOThe Great 5 Year Anniversary Bonanza Our 5 year anniversary falls on the 28th of June this year, if we consider our birth date to be the date our public beta went live. Time to celebrate this Travel.SE style - with a competition! Rules For the whole month of June we will be running a bounty gi...

We need to edit all the community ads we sent out to point to this.

@JoErNanO - done on Sec.SE

@RoryAlsop Awesome thanks.
We just became a love counselling agency.

10:28 AM
@JoErNanO ... o...kaaaay :-)

@JoErNanO appreciate removal of your downvote.

@JoErNanO @GayotFow which particular document/compendium of documents should I be referencing? So far I've only found various individual documents for each type of visa (as you can tell I am pretty new to this haha)

I suspect the ukraine thing was merely spam

@Berwyn I'm not a fan of sarcasm on a Q/A site. People posting questions here sometimes have actual problems they wish to solve and the last thing they need is a sarcastic answer. ;)

Well, I contend that my answer was factual!

10:32 AM
@JoelDamien Reading what @GayotFow said he suggests quoting perhaps a reference to Paragraph 320, or Paragraph 10B which I guess can be found somewhere on gov.uk

Admittedly the OP's question did rub me up the wrong way a bit...

@JoErNanO yeah that's where I was looking but there seems to be many smaller documents for each type of visa, whereas the lack of a document name in his reply leads me to believe @GayotFow was referring to some kind of main/primary/compiled document. I'll wait and see if he can link me it when he gets back :)

@JoelDamien OK makes sense. @GayotFow is our local UK visa expert. :)

@JoErNanO Indeed, his expertise is impressive.

10:49 AM
@JoelDamien The RULES dude, the rules! You cite the RULES, then you have all the bases covered. In your case you're looking at it's the exact same paragraph that got this unlucky soead.
Nobody can bother you when you cite from the rules

@GayotFow There's 100s of documents though x( gov.uk/government/…
Where can I find a document with all the rules?
Have you got a link?
that one?

No, you can see in the link it's the guidance
just a moment

Yeah I figured, but on the page it has a big heading saying 'Immigration Rules' xD
thats the same link
LOL
I have that exact page open in another tab and I got to it from the guidance link x)

the io will use 321 (iii)

right
I'll read up
Thanks!

10:58 AM
or paragraph 10B

This page is really nice for finding paragraphs: gov.uk/guidance/immigration-rules/immigration-rules-index
Just a note for anyone interested

or paragraph 30A, you can decide

I hate it when they have referenced to other paragraphs that are like 100s a paragraphs away haha
By the way, just a general shoutout/thanks to everyone who helped me on my visit visa question
the visit was awesome
wedding was great
was nice to be back in the UK again
30A is good

11:58 AM
5k views on the dueling scar and it's been a hot question for 3 hours

12:45 PM
@HeidelBerGensis getting @mindcorrosive's attention is easy, you just ping him in here. Voting to delete a post (AND asking others to join you) is not the way to do it. Just ping him next time :)
@JoErNanO I've featured your meta post, hopefully get some links

@MarkMayo Awesome thanks.

1:11 PM
@MarkMayo I wasn't getting his attention, I clearly said I was bothering him.. You know, delete his answer to prove the point. Take it easy mate!

1:23 PM
@MarkMayo Do you think we can ask SE higher-ups for some swag prizes for the bounty competition? Can you, as a mod, do this?

2:22 PM
is there a statistics page somewhere? it seems like there's a lot more traffic today

@HeidelBerGensis take what easy? Nobody's stressed out here, I'm just asking you not to bother people and/or misuse the system. If that's good, everyone's good :)
@Berwyn only really on here
mods have more stats, but we're not meant to disclose details

@Berwyn There's always more traffic mid-week.

np. only curious

I realise this is a coupleof weeks old, but anyone joined the new airline points alliance for low cost carriers?

Not me. Be interesting to see how it goes. Perhaps it can go worldwide

3:03 PM
/me feels a bit guilty about bouncing that fines question. just saw the spelling mistake and felt obligated to correct it

3:27 PM
@Berwyn Feel free to edit if the edit improves the post.
No guilt.

I noticed that there was a badge with a unique holder going from -5 Q to +25 A so had a look at it
I go through the ZTL every so often and it's always a concern, but not really more so than going through the congestion zone in london. I don't think "congestion zone" is any more descriptive than ZTL really

3:56 PM
@MarkMayo all cool man, i am cool.. since my return i am cool ;) relax man.. promise!

4:23 PM
@Berwyn ZTL are not solely for congestion. They can also be set up to preserve historical city centres, pedestrian areas, monuments, etc.

It does seem odd we've gotten 8 answers on travel.stackexchange.com/questions/69321/…, all saying basically some variant of "yes"

ZTL literally means controlled traffic zone.
@ZachLipton You're just envious because you didn't get a piece of the action. :P

maybe I'll post one now too, just in case 8 isn't enough

@ZachLipton 8 is the magic number.

4:53 PM
@JoErNanO I meant comparing it with what London calls the Congestion Zone. If you're a foreigner, does Congestion Zone mean anything more than ZTL does to another foreigner?

@Berwyn Absolutely not. Wanna talk intelligibility? Let's discuss the German Umwelt-Plakette. That thing you need to enter most German city centres and you discover only after receiving a fine. :D

I learned about the Umwelt-Plakette on this site a little while back. And people think US laws and police can be arbitrary...

or just taking your rental car out of the airport in Florida and realising you've just been charged $30 in automatic tolls
+ "convenience charge"

We like to get people on that with the Golden Gate Bridge too

5:26 PM
@JoErNanO no pride of ownership here, if you see any of my questions that you want to bounty, go ahead; that's what they are there for
Except I'll put a 100 points on the dueling scar question since it's been so controversial
possibly 100 on the Copenhagen one for the same reason,
50 for everything else
and tell me guys, is it me or have we seen a bulge in 101's coming in from the SE hinterlands today?

5:55 PM
why is that passport number thing so popular? It's bizarre

Maybe because everybody having had more than one passport in his/her life can answer out of personal experience.

heh. ok

6:53 PM
Can they send ZTL tickets abroad?
I know they can do that with speeding tickets but not with parking fines...

not sure

@Berwyn There is a kind of feedback loop, once a question make it to the threshold to be "hot" it gets many more visits (and many votes just by virtue of being seen a lot)

if it's a hire car, I'm sure they'll get you. not sure if a fine for a private car will follow you home
@Relaxed presumably certain kinds of questions that are easily researched or answerable from experience encourage lots of answers as Willeke says

7:13 PM
I have a great photo of a guy in Christiana passed out on a tire swing, but it seems wrong to post it online
especially as it has nothing to do with the question

@ZachLipton agreed. I would hate it if I found myself like that (On internet.)

7:55 PM
OK, three bounties set. (I will be asleep when 1st June arrives.

8:05 PM
Hey guys, if I wanted to get some ideas from the community here about things to do in a particular destination (because I figure there would be a great wealth of knowledge here), would that be off-topic?
I'm guessing so, and I found this - meta.travel.stackexchange.com/questions/38/… - but it's five years old so just wanted to check how these sort of questions might be received these days. I know on other SE sites it would attract opinionated answers, just wasn't sure if it was different here since destination questions I guess would be quite regularly asked?

Unfortunately questions of that form are usually closed with the reason "we are not a travel agent"
more specific questions about particular activities or places can be on-topic

Cool, that makes sense. Thanks :)

You can always try asking an off-topic question in chat too, you never know :)

Ok, I may well do!

chx
Thanks for being a considerate asker

8:17 PM
I guess those Q get closed more now than in the earlier days (looking at older content.)

Yeah. I understand why that's the guideline, but it's also a bit sad, because it's nice to get local suggestions on what to do that go beyond what the guidebooks say

I feel those Q should be encouraged, as local knowledge it very useful, but I feel this site is a bit to much fact bound. (I might be in the wrong spot, but I like the people here.)

I've always felt that people on SE in general would often rather look for a reason to close a question than answer it.
And some will argue that's a good thing because it keeps the site cleaner, easier to find things, etc...
but the human touch is nice too
I'd like to see more advice of the sort "if you lived in X and a friend was coming in from out of town, where would you take him that most tourists wouldn't know about?"

That's a better question than "where's the best place to go"
it's providing direct experience, rather than attempting to satisfy the requirements of someone they don't know

true, but want to bet it would still be closed as WANATA or opinion-based?

8:30 PM
Many good Q have some opinion based parts of answers, even in the factual ones, opinion will often guide you to which answer to give.

What about: "Which airline should I fly from CDG to JFK"?
that's opinion based but there's a lmited set of answers and each of their pros and cons could be given
what that have a chance?

List answers (or Q asking for them) are also out of bounds

it might have a chance, especially if you added more parameters ("which of these three airlines flying CDG to JFK has the most comfortable first class seat?" or something). I'm sure someone would vote to close it anyway though

Is it ok to just ask which airlines fly CDG-JFK?
and if the answerer happens to point out that airline X is the best because of leg room and free beer or whatever, then the questioner gets what they wanted in the end too

@ZachLipton "if you lived in X and a friend was coming in from out of town, where would you take him that most tourists wouldn't know about?" <- I like that as a question. I can see it's still opinion based though; seems like it's almost a grey area here?

9:05 PM
I'm not sure if I'm ruining some bounty bonanza questions by answering them before the bounty is added. If you'd like me to not be so trigger happy, do shoot me a message. xD

9:20 PM
Is there a scheduled chat on?

@GayotFow Scheduled chat for?

I got a ping

@Berwyn i dunno but that question is really easy to answer :) You can get it from wikipedia, skyscanner or any flight search engine
@Berwyn the question btw is timely if you want Paris because Air France starts an Orly-JFK flight a week from now airfrance.us/US/en/local/page_flottante/hp/… :)

9:42 PM
Does anybody know something about a scheduled chat?

There's an event scheduled in 2 hours for the bonanza: chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/info/591/you-are-here?tab=schedule

@ZachLipton Thanks

10:17 PM
I just want to point out that @Berwyn has gained 2,425 rep in 17 days, which is seriously impressive

Hat's off!

chx
Indeed congratulations
If you look at stackexchange.com/leagues/125/year/travel/2016-01-01 you will see something odd: @Berwyn total reputation vs yearly reputation is not the same
How do you file bug reports, meta.SE?

and his actual rep now is 2,757 based on his profile
