What is 'なにがしか' and how is it different from '誰か' 'なにか' ?

This says なにがしか means "some sort of".
自信ないけど

誰か (Somebody)って意味もあるようですが
「なんらかの」って意味もあるみたいです
「いくらかの」って意味もあるらしい
「なにがしか(の)」は、「誰か(の)」「なんらか(の)・なにか(の)」「いくらか(の)」って感じで、
古語っぽいよね?

8:30 AM
so in 願ったらなにがしかが叶う

8:50 AM
Does it mean "something gets granted / comes true" ?

6 hours later…
3:03 PM
そうだと思います
願ったら、なにか叶う、みたいな

Can I ask all of my questions here without losing points?

4:20 PM
@JACKB Of course you're welcome to participate in chat and you're welcome to post questions here (as long as you observe the usual chat etiquette, see for example meta.graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/597/…). It might be a good place to get informal answers to informal questions (but of course chat is not a dumping ground for questions).

Thanks!

Chat is good for asking about books, software, "help me study"-type questions... all of which are not allowed on the main site. (stick around if you ask, though... since we'll probably need to clarify exactly what you're looking for)

I am learning more by reading answers to previous questions then asking them.

9:09 PM
I've written up two or three questions in the last few months, only to find the answers in the "potential related questions" popup

What is the best android app for kanji draw recognition?

@BouzuHarinezumi There's a Software Recommendations SE site now. I don't know much about it, but maybe you could post your question there: softwarerecs.stackexchange.com

Here are Software Recs' guidelines for posting questions: meta.softwarerecs.stackexchange.com/questions/336/…

I would just answer you in chat (asking things like that is fine here) but I have no idea :-)

I don't have an Android device. My newest Linux tablet is my old Nokia n800, which is sadly now ancient :-(

@snailplane Thank! I just got Samsung P580 with pen - powerful and cheap. Unfortunately all the apps I have could not recognize 啇 - it is just not in their databases. I wonder how you found it so quickly - in a paper book?

Anonymous
I wrote it into my EX-WORD electronic dictionary.

9:51 PM
By the way, if you look up 適 on Wiktionary, they give the character composition as ⿺辶啇: en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E9%81%A9

Anonymous
You can just copy+paste it from there.

So, when you type テキ in EX-WORD it just pops up as a choice?

Anonymous
Oh, it probably would, but I meant that I used a pen to write it.

Anonymous
For a reading like テキ I would have to sort through a lot of kanji if I looked it up that way.

Anonymous
The EX-WORD has handwriting input.

9:54 PM
Oh, cool - I did not know EX-WORD has a pen.

Both of its screens are touchscreens on the newer ones.

Nice! I wish they created an app for android...
I see they sell them on Amazon.jp for 円22,800 used - this is the price of my new Samsung tablet!

Anonymous
Yes, it cost more than that when it was new. People told me it was a waste of money, but I love it :-) I've gotten a crazy amount of use out of it.

I wouldn't recommend it primarily for studying kanji though, since I don't think 新漢語林 is a great dictionary for learners of Japanese to use.

10:01 PM
I use it mainly for the dictionaries. My favorite dictionary on it is 明鏡国語辞典, which can be had in app form much cheaper :-)

I do use it to look up new kanji I come across all the time. Usually what I do is I write the whole word the character appears in and look up the word.

But I think I did what you're doing now, which is learning sets of characters that use specific phonetic elements to speed up memorizing characters.

Anonymous
(I'm only guessing that you're doing the same thing :-)

So for example, in my notes I have: 包 ホウ 包 抱 砲 胞 飽 泡 鞄 咆 炮 庖 疱

There are books that are designed for this sort of study:

I always thought that was cool :-)

Yes, I use similar technique. In the beginning I tried to learn all kanji with a common semantic or phonetic element, but realized that they don't stick without a context. So, lately I only learn kanji that I encounter in my daily life, but I do still decompose them into elements and learn elements at the same time. It helps me to guess reading for the unknown to me kanji.

@BouzuHarinezumi I think learning in context is the best way :-)

I'm with you in Nocluesville.

My friend sent it to me :-)

Is it a linguistic or mathematical puzzle?

Anonymous
I think it is a linguistic puzzle.

Это интересно :)

@CowperKettle Help! :-)

CowperKettle speaks Russian.

東京は03...
06は・・・

Ooh, I would never have guessed that.

I still don't see it - what is the association with numbers here?

So 06 would be 大?

I see now: 東京、大阪、札幌、青森

Yay :-)
