Just a light question here. If you'd have to choose between 漢字が覚えたくない and 漢字を覚えたくない what would be your choice? (no need to justify your choice).

I want to say "Mathematics is the richest in games to sharpen logical thinkings.". My attempt is 数学ほど論理的思考を鋭くするゲームが豊かなことはない。. Is it correct? Any comment and suggestion are really appreciated.

My friend suggested 数学ほど論理的思考を鋭くする、豊かなゲームはない。. But I think the meaning is not the same as what I want to say.

My friend's translation is "Mathematics is the richest games to sharpen logical thinking."

Is what you want to say equivalent to "Of all the games that sharpen logical thinking, mathematics is the richest game."? Or "Mathematics has the highest number of games that sharpen logical thinking."? Your translation appears to say: "Games that sharpen logical thinking as much as mathematics are never rich." Your friend's: "There are no other rich games that sharpen logical thinking as much as mathematics"

I've just asked a question on Stack Overflow which was a prime candidate for googling. I admit it was a poor question and with a little bit of research I would have found the answer. It annoyed me that someone put a let-me-google-that-for-you link in the comments. It got right up my nose. I find...

I have a strange question maybe... Are you guys good at reading upside down Japanese texts? I've noticed that it seems very difficult to me compared to English or Russian. I wonder if that's just a question of experience or maybe I'm missing something in my studies.

I think when I'm reading upside down Russian, I'm not really trying to make out every character... I just read the first few and then I can kind of guess the rest. So maybe I indeed just need more reading experience.

As the ban is already in place, the error message shown for a comment should also be adjusted properly. Just tried to post a comment containing a lmgtfy-link (and other links and information beside that), but wasn't able to, as the error message just stated that "This content is not allowed.". Great! Which content? I had to create an answer to see what was the cause for the problem. 2 reasons for a lmgtfy-link: I don't want to list 10 links from a Google search, lmgtfy summarizes in one link. And I don't want to paste in a Goole search URL as I don't really know what all these parameters mean. — taffit Apr 1 '14 at 11:03

I also noticed I couldn't use LMGTFY. I don't mind it being banned, but I do feel strongly that if you're offended by it, you're being too sensitive. If the implication that "you're too dumb/lazy to search for that" bothers you, a better solution is to have a little confidence that you are neither dumb nor lazy. — Jason C Aug 14 '13 at 23:09

The argument was that it was a colloquial word, so it wouldn't be in a dictionary. Actually, "I'm feeling lucky" on Google with "Japanese dictionary" gets you to a dictionary that contained that word...

Anyway, I guess it's less controversial this way

Hmm. Sometimes I feel like Google can answer my question (especially places like Oshiete goo), but I ask anyway because I might misunderstand a Japanese answer, or someone here might explain it in a more accessible way, or simply because there is no such question on stackexchange yet so I can contribute by just asking it.

@kuchitsu I have a new idea for deciding if a question is off-topic (too easy, no "research effort"): If the question is answered by someone posting an entry of jisho.org (WWWJDIC), then it's too easy / too little "research effort".

If it has to be answered by explaining an entry in a monolingual dictionary, which is more nuanced than the entry in a bilingual dictionary, then I think it's OK.

I'm not against easy questions. I just think they should be detailed enough to encourage more nuanced answers.

I like the rather minimalist feel, with the small accents. The particular nature of the accents doesn't bother me all that much

@YasashiiEirian Well, for that reading, you have to switch around the two modifiers ("論理的思考を鋭くする" and "豊かな"), so that the "豊かな" comes right after "数学ほど". Hence: "数学ほど豊かな、論理的思考を鋭くするゲームはない" = "There are no other games that sharpen logical thinking as rich as mathematics."
