I'm certainly partly responsible for that wall o' text. Should there be a separate room for extensive discussions in Japanese? Or should we try to encourage holding multiple conversations in multiple languages in parallel? (is that feasible?)

Ideally if it's a private discussion you'd just make a room for that conversation

this is the first line of shirokuma cafe: 今日からもう8月かあ. What's the かあ at the end?

ssb
It's the question か plus an elongating あ

oh, didnt know you could make questions with no verb

ssb
It's being used really informally

yeah, it makes sense in the context
thx
would ヒマ mean something different when written with katakana?

ssb
5:05 PM
nope, same thing
just stylistic emphasis

5:24 PM
dont know if it might be a bit too advanced for me
there are things i get
but other, such as なったらまた
i dont get, even looking it up on google
秋になったらまた to be precise

ssb
また is referring to some verb that is understood through context

Think of it as だ+か. You have to omit だ in a main clause before the particles か and さ

So just pretend だ is secretly there :-)

@ento I think chatting in here is fine, whether it's in Japanese or English :-)

People can always make additional rooms if they like, of course

Keeping our 日本語で room open meant unfreezing every 14 days…. So I'm not sure we've got enough demand to keep a separate Japanese-only room open in perpetuum

But I think everyone should feel free to speak either language here

Hm, thanks to some lyrics, I just wondered - is it possible to know, without context, whether 「赤い{あかい}薔薇{ばら}の姫{ひめ}」 means "red princess of roses" or "princess of red roses"?
Welp, I gotta read up on how to do furigana in chat again

Any ideas for easy to read manga for a beginner? Just finished the first genki textbook and about to start the second one (thats more or less my level)
Something real real real simple I can read and not have to constantly look up words in a dictionary

@Daniel From what I heard, Love Hina is relatively simple, with furigana.
I have a chart flying around somewhere that rates various manga and visual / light novels according to difficulty for beginners, dunno where atm though

Ill look into it

We don't have furigana support in chat unfortunately, but I'm sure everyone can understand your brackets here :-)

@Xeo I think it's technically ambiguous

Anonymous
I would expect that since あかいばら is a collocation that it would be more likely to be parsed as (あかいばら)のひめ

You can reproduce the ambiguity in English with "red rose princess" if you like
