Here's a useful term: 反面教師

4:50 AM

@DariusJahandarie I changed your link to HTTP to make it clickable :-)

Anonymous
HTTPS still isn't supported on meta sites because they can't do a meta.*.stackexchange.com wildcard cert

Anonymous
Long-term, I think they're going to rename the hosts rather than get individual certs

Anonymous
5:09 AM
@DariusJahandarie Oh yeah, I read about that a few months ago on the arXiv blog: medium.com/the-physics-arxiv-blog/…

Anonymous
At the time, people were grumbling about downvotes on meta and I was thinking of putting something similar together, but then I never did

Oops, didn't even notice it was https because it hides the schema, lol.
Well, I've at least convinced myself to not downvote... no idea if I've convinced anyone else. :)

Anonymous
I don't downvote a lot

Anonymous
I do on occasion

Anonymous
I think if people can manage to be tactful, leaving comments is one of the best options :-)

5:19 AM
Dunno. I think it really only makes sense to leave comments if you have a clear factual thing that you can point out.

Anonymous
Well, that's sort of what I meant.

Anonymous
I wasn't very specific, I guess.

6:54 AM
Man, I really hate the layout on meta. It totally doesn't work for long discussions. Why can't I put linebreaks in my comments!
@ssb Thanks for your comments by the way. I got a little too excited when I saw the paper, I think. ;)
Off to bed, night all.

ssb
@DariusJahandarie I do think it's a cool study of course, but that it might more accurately reflect youtube comments or fox news comments or the like
good night!

7:25 AM
Anecdotally, I've definitely seen negative effects on behavior from downvotes

Why are you trying to hurt my brain? :-)

reddit
死せる英雄
what is 死せる? A word that is no more?
That's why Stack Exchange platform tries to be based on facts
Otherwise you get those agree/disagree with your opinion votes
I'm saying that the paper does not necessarily reflect the SE community
It's not really a discussion forum
It's Q&A
Disclaimer: I haven't read the paper

ただいま!

お帰りなさい
Disclaimer: I just looked up in dictionary
can't find that post about downvotes...
oh wait, maybe that was on reddit

行ってきます!ww

9:06 AM
wait, don't go yet... lemme check the dictionary for the appropriate response
got it
いってらっしゃい

9:18 AM
I think it's 死す (now 死する) in its form 死し+あり → 死せり, in its adnominal form 死せる

Anonymous
You can find it in 古語辞典 as 助動詞「り」

Anonymous
Martin says it's perfect/resultative

equivalent to 死んでいる?

Anonymous
Yes I think it is a literary form with that meaning

Ah, thanks

Anonymous
9:21 AM
So I think 死せる appears before nouns

In everything I've seen so far, yeah.

Anonymous
Because it's the 連体形 (adnominal form) of classical 死せり

Yessss, like べき is the 連体形 of べし

Anonymous
:-)

.... except now you have べきだ

Anonymous
9:22 AM
べき does not fit cleanly into any part of speech

Anonymous
But historically I think it was more regular

Anonymous
It only really makes sense to put words into paradigms when they actually alternate with one another consistently

Anonymous
べし and べき aren't really regularly used in a conclusive-adnominal paradigm anymore

Anonymous
So it's questionable whether it's useful to say it is still the 連体形 anymore

How is べし used nowadays?

Anonymous
9:27 AM
Well, you can still use literary language

Anonymous
I don't know

Anonymous
Maybe you could ask a question if you want to get an answer about べし and べき and the like :-)

Nah, I'm not really burning to know that
Just an offhanded question

Anonymous
I don't have a lot of experience with hearing べし

Anonymous
I think it sounds older / more literary than べきだ

Anonymous
9:30 AM
But I think it's less common

Anonymous
Someone else would be able to provide a better answer :-)

I have bookmarked the link for later reading, among many such links
This issue is being looked into
