00:00 - 13:0013:00 - 22:00

1:00 PM
or when you're talking about AKB48 in class,

"~たらどう"という意味と似てる

then someone says 「それよりさ、今度の新しい先生、見た~?」
あ、そうかも
それより is literally "than that", so
or "rather than that", so
It's like "I have a better idea" when you suggest something

ですね
(was that correct usage?)

and it can be something like "Let's talk about something else (better)"
...when you change topics (I think)
Yes I often use ですね that way

does it sound feminine?

1:06 PM
Sometimes I say ですよね~~
neutralかな~
そうよね~would sound feminine
そうね too
I googles 札幌ルビー会議,...
Does it have anything to do with "Ruby"?

I think it has something to do with the programming language Ruby

Ah~~~
I don't know anything about computers or programming

私も

そおなんだ~~ww

my teacher used to say...something like あるいは a lot
that's like つまり, right?

1:15 PM
あるいは=つまり、yes,
「あるいは」(or/in other words)って、

I think it is similar to id est (i.e.)

@Chocolate Wow. I thought that everyone in JLU was a programmer. That is, they started off with Stack Overflow, and heard about JLU from there. I'm glad to see that some people aren't.

"or we can also say that ..."

Yeah~~ あるいはsounds a bit literary

I was a "programmer" when I was in the robotics club in school.

1:17 PM
@AndrewGrimm I found JLU through Dave's post on KanjiBox

I don't think it counts, the program was exceedingly simplified
nothing about writing your own programs and stuff like that

I only started using the Internet last year

"I'm glad to see that some people aren't." Yeah, filthy programmers.

Haha, without programmers, I wouldn't have XKCD

I don't know anything about things online, so I don't even know Stack Overflow or KanjiBox etc.

1:19 PM
I like XKCD even though some comics I have no knowledge to understand.
My favourite is the "make everyday Saturday" comic

@Chocolate 本当に

That was a good one, but the one he just did about ContextBot, was hilarious!
She hit alt-tab to hide minecraft at work and accidentally dropped a stack of diamond into lava! HA!

2:10 PM
quick question: When you use 限り after an i-adj (i.e. 寂しい限り)...is that in casual or formal language?
In my notes it says it's in formal language, but it also says it's followed by だ, so I'm confused

my notes say that 限り cannot go after adjectives

Yes, generally that's true
but sometimes it can follow i-adjectives that convey emotion to mean "very" or "the height of that emotion"
I just learned this right now

oh? I did not know
can I have an example?

yes
久しぶりに友人から電話がかかってきたが、元気で研究を続けているそうでうれしいかぎりだ

"formal language, but it also says it's followed by だ"

2:19 PM
is that not contradictory?

the appearance of だ does not preclude formality

oh really? I guess I just always had that in my mind that that's how it was

だ→です is change in politeness, not formality
plain vs. polite; casual vs. formal; colloquial vs. literary

oh!
I guess you're right, that makes a lot of sense

also if you count humble vs. honorific
I have this expression in my practice book: 今日の一言
I think it's similar to "word of the day" ?

2:31 PM
today's word?

Ah I think I have it figured out
とてもうれしい is the colloquial version of the written version うれしい限りだ

oh no way
huh
Flaw, you're awesome :)

and うれしい限りです is also possible

just not common?

no idea about how common it is
but it would be the polite version
I'm not sure if 限りである exists haha
hm, seems that 限りである is possible
it would be even more formal than 限りだ I suppose

2:53 PM
Haha!
I guess so
OH! Everyone mark your calanders, Mists of Pandaria comes out September 25th

What's that? (goes off to google)
Oh it's a WOW thing. (I'm not a WOW player)

It is a WoW thing :)
I used to play a lot, and now I play sometimes
and I am so EXCITED because they're adding a pokemon game into it
you can catch pets, and battle them

Why don't you just play pokemon?

It it going to be fantastic, I can't wait
Because pokemon is stupid

How is one concept less stupid than the other?

3:03 PM
Haha, no, I mean, I only like the origonal games...Red, Blue, Yellow...the new ones I don't like

Haha, yea the first 150 were much cuter

I used to play Yellow on my gameboy all the time...I just got a what's-it-called...emulator for it
I'm about to face Brock
But Yellow is hard because you start with Pikachu and electricity week against rock

Garbodor?

It's not cute!

3:06 PM
Haha!
Yeah, the old ones are the best

Some of the newer ones are okay though
sapphire and ruby version weren't all bad

I wouldn't mind playing the reboots, but I can't see myself trying to learn all the new pokemon, that's just not fun for me

Well you don't actually have to make a conscious effort to for the red/blue/yellow version
you can sort of guess the pokemon's type and attacks based on what they look like
but for the newer versions, how they look don't always translate to their type

Ah, yeah
And there's something about personalities?

Oh that just affects some stats of the pokemon

3:11 PM
Ah, I see

Unless you're playing for maximum stats or something

I think I'd write うれしい限りです to say thank you in a rather formal letter

there's really not much point to study so much into it

Sorry to interrupt you

@Chocolate Oh really? neat :)
No, by all means :)
added to my notebook :)

3:15 PM
You might find うれしい限りだ・うれしい限りである in a journal, essay, novel...
used in the written form. not in a normal conversation
These sound formal. (might not polite though)

oh cool :)

What happens if a person uses it in conversation?
Will it sound strange?
Or will it sound like the person is giving a speech?

1 hour later…
4:49 PM
Need some help understanding this sentence from a practice book:
あー、四つ目の信号って、地下鉄の出口を出たところの信号も入れて四つ目っていうことだったんだよ、きっと。
I got lost at も入れて
"Ah, the fourth traffic light; the traffic light upon exiting the subway も入れて..."

5:34 PM
@Flaw: What about, "Including the traffic light at the exit, there were four"?
I'm not sure, just a guess..

@Flaw Yeah~~嬉しい限りです sounds like a speech
@ChrisHarris I agree

Oh cool, I'm not sure, but I get the feeling this guy is following directions or something, then he needs to count the traffic lights^^

Yes~~^^

1 hour later…
7:08 PM
@Chris Yes your guess of the context is correct. And looks like he wasn't the only one to get lost haha
I still have a long way to go to improve my reading comprehension

2 hours later…
8:56 PM
@Flaw: ahah, yeah I do also. I find that I can read technical stuff, but I can't read novels for some reason (T_T).

9:33 PM
I have a question, why is October 神無月? ww

eh... considering the history of "October"...
or were you referring to the meaning of the kanji?

ah, the history
