5:00 PM
@HodofHod :-/ Not a fan of random-word gimatriyaos. But nice work compiling.

@msh210 Me neither, but hey!
they're all biblical, if that helps
:D

:-)

@RebeccaChernoff are you around?
(why isnt @rchern a valid alias that I can ping?)
@msh210 btw, also in my defense, I did find 18 extra non-gematria references. Anyone is welcome to find more and pop gematrias off the list and replace them with better ones.

@HodofHod Oh, I hadn't noticed. I apologize! Nice work!

@msh210 No apology necessary, I didn't really want to do it with the gematrias, but I don't think it would ever have been done otherwise. Now lets see if I can make a sentence that uses all those gematria words.....

5:14 PM
@HodofHod yo

@RebeccaChernoff You wouldn't happen to know if there's a scheduled time for launch, would you?

eh, we're not really watching the clock planning to do it at a certain time...just rough estimates, why?

@RebeccaChernoff Curious if I'll be around when it happens. Our site doesn't graduate every day, you know! :D Sorry to bother you.

hehe
no worries
will likely be in a few hours

kthxai!
yech! I swallowed a B!

5:20 PM
lol

that was, btw, totally unintentional
just so's y'all know

@HodofHod So we don't have to give you malkos?
5 times
that would be 195 lashes.

5:34 PM
@ShmuelBrin Wait, whaat???

@HodofHod 5*39

Jin
hi anyone here?

@Jin !

Jin
i'm thinking about using that golem art for the CAPTCHA page

Q: Design Ideas for 404, Captcha, and Error pages

HodofHodAs you all know, StackExchange's resident designer, Jin, has informed us that our site is due for graduation soon. Jin has been really awesome about getting input and ideas from the community about how the site should look. Now Jin is going to work on the design for the 404, Captcha, and Error pa...

@Jin I was never the hugest fan of using a golem, but if you're going to use one, that one looks very good IMO.

Jin
5:48 PM
there were couple of other captcha suggestions, but i think this one is more obvious with the convetion we have for captcha images
also the art style blends in with the site design well too

@Jin and it's cc-by!

Jin
yep.
i'll put attribution in the image, linking to the artist's site

@Jin Yeah, I was saying that's a benefit, not cautioning.

6:15 PM
@ShmuelBrin what 5?
idk, I think he needs some pants...
2

@HodofHod wanna @ that?

@HodofHod does eating a bee result in four times malkos or 5?

@HodofHod Rambam Maachalot Asurot 2:23

6:34 PM
(At the beginning of paragraph 27 there.)

@msh210 It seems to me he's slightly underestimating the number of hairs on people's heads.

@DoubleAA Hm... looks like it might be six according to the Magid Mishne.
@DoubleAA I don't know. You can eat a lot of bugs.
If a person has 100,000 hairs, and (rounding) it's 200 lashes per bug, that's only 500 bugs.
In two k'zesim of maror (two days)..... hm, okay, yeah, that is a bit much. :-)

@msh210 Also remember that for everyone else it's all he'elem achat and they would only get 1 set each (or one for each night). So she would have to eat 496 (492) bugs herself.
assuming a family of 5

@msh210 I don't want to sound too picky...

Jin
6:51 PM
it's almost time...
3

@Jin yay!

Jin
btw this chatroom skin will get a facelift as well.

@Jin yay! and I like your golem. What did you end up doing for 404?

Jin
@MonicaCellio i'm just using a plain image for 404 and error pages now. i'll spend more time to work on the final versions.
for the launch i only care about CAPTCHA since it's far more visible.

@Jin makes sense.

7:05 PM
We're already Mi Yodeya Beta

Jin
@ShmuelBrin not "Beta" anymore

We're Up
3

Jin
congrats!
btw refresh this chat

@ShmuelBrin yay! Beautiful!
chat, too!

@jin not to be nitpicky, but you misspelled judaism as judiasm

Jin
7:11 PM
@ShmuelBrin where?

@Jin on the bottom of the page (in the list of sites)

Jin
@ShmuelBrin it's our dev's fault, i'll let him know! :)

@Jin Beautiful.

@Jin but in general, it is beautiful.

Jin
@ShmuelBrin thanks. thank you all(chatroom regulars) for helping me out with the design. I had fun
I'll be monitoring Meta and checking the site for CSS and styling bugs.

7:21 PM
Does anyone know if the privileges listed here are final?
Also, will our URL be switched to mi.yodeya.com (like askubuntu.com) or will mi.yodeya.com continue to redirect to judaism.se?

@ShmuelBrin it doesn't look like they've been updated yet.

@MonicaCellio they were someone updated (I used to be at 100% on all, now I still need points to protect questions [which I think I've done once, IIRC]

@ShmuelBrin Note incidentally that yodeya.stackexchange.com also redirects to the site (and has done so all along).

@ShmuelBrin oh, ok. I don't know if I was able to protect questions before (never did), but everything else topping out at 5000 seems odd.
@Jin, on my network profile page, the icon is the new one but the name is "Jewish Life & Learning".

Jin
@ShmuelBrin the spelling in the footer is now fixed.

7:27 PM
@MonicaCellio our old privileges looked like

@Jin Thank you!
@msh210 @Jin that '1' is nearly invisible on its background. (Maybe boldface it?)

Jin
@msh210 hm weird it should be white text. i'll fix.

@Jin Thanks :-)

Jin
@MonicaCellio we're looking into it. the devs want to wait for a bit because it affects API calls

@Jin At judaism.stackexchange.com/users/170 the "meta user" tab has the old favicon. (Or is that a caching issue?) (Do you want these reports here, or only on Meta?)

Jin
7:33 PM
@msh210 it's cached

@Jin Oh, okay.

Jin
Chrome is notorious for holding onto old favicons, even after hard refreshing.

@ welcome!
(Hm. That didn't seem to work. I wonder whether he/she got pinged.)
Let's try again... @טוני welcome!

@Jin it's also hard to see which question have been voted (the dark arrows and light arrows look very similar)

Jin
@ShmuelBrin on the main site?
they look pretty different to me, tried on 3 different monitors

7:38 PM
@Jin on Meta definitely, (my internet conecton is too slow to see anything on main right now)

@Jin thanks. (Ok, I was guessing config file, not code...)

Jin
@ShmuelBrin ^ is that what you see?

@msh210 @Jin I'm thinking the hand should be lower, so top of the index finger aligns with the top of the 'N'. But maybe it's just me. (I'm being very nitpicky, I know. In general the site is great.)

Q: New Design Launched

JinAs you can see the new design just went live. Which means this site has been officially launched! Congratulations! Thank you for your valuable design feedback. If you're still seeing the old favicons, please load the follow urls and do a hard browser refresh. Main site favicon Meta site favico...

7:41 PM
@Jin yes

@ShmuelBrin Considering that the domain is owned by @IsaacMoses, that'd be a question for him and SE to discuss. I understand (from what he's said here) his hope is that SE will take over and use he domain, but I have no idea whether he's spoken with SE about it, or whether they are interested.
@ShmuelBrin Looks distinct enough to me. @MonicaCellio?

Jin
@ShmuelBrin hmm on my screen they contrast is pretty significant to see the difference. does anyone else have problem seeing them? @MonicaCellio

The main-site voting arrows (selected and not) are, I think, less distinct from one another. I'd be curious to know how they differ in monochrome, or for the colorblind.

Jin
@msh210 I use a color blind simulator(Protanopia in the screenshot) to check for the color choices I make

@Jin in my reverse-video theme the arrows and accepted-answer icons look kind of funky. (My employer blocks wherever some of the screen shots are hosted.) I realize that my scheme is abnormal, but yeah, they're a little hard for me to see. I'll take a screen shot but I won't be able to post it until I get home.
(Unless you want me to email it to somebody.)

Jin
7:48 PM
the arrows look fine in tritanopia an deuteranopia modes too.

@Jin They look distinct enough to me! I was asking because apparently @ShmuelBrin was having trouble on meta, and main's are (I think) less distinct than meta, is all.
@Jin Sounds good to me.

Jin
@msh210 it could be monitor's gamma setting. I know some of the older laptop screens tend to make everything more washed out.

@MonicaCellio If you want to post it, I'll be glad to do so for you. My account is msh210 on the server gmail.com.

@msh210 right now I can't see any images

Jin
@ShmuelBrin that's definitely abnormal... do you think it's because of your internet connection?

7:49 PM
@Jin think so
@Jin it loads fast on chrome though.
and it is hard to see on my laptop screen

Jin
@ShmuelBrin is your laptop calibrated for optimal gamma setting?

@msh210 coming right up...

@Jin no idea

Jin
I've run into this issue before, but unfortunately If I change the colors, then it'd look pretty off for most people's monitors.

@Jin another thing... probably also not your issue but a dev's... the <title>s on meta pages no longer say "Meta".

Jin
7:55 PM
@msh210 ok i'll let him know. it's a site setting.

@Jin thanks :-)

@Jin, should I be seeing the new design on my phone? (I see the new logo but it otherwise looks the same as before -- but maybe that's how mobile SE works?)

Jin
@MonicaCellio for mobile, we only have one standard SE theme.

@Jin choosing colors is a finicky thing, yes. I sent some images along for what I'm seeing, but want to be clear that I know I have a mutant setup for accessibility reasons and I'm used to things not working perfectly.

Jin
7:58 PM
but we do plan to tweak each site's mobile theme to reflect their brandings.

Those are @MonicaCellio's screenshots. I'll let her caption them herself.

Jin
@msh210 thanks for posting that.. hmm I'm not sure what the best solution is for high contrast mode for the on-state of the voting arrow..
I can make it redder i suppose, so it stands out from the black background

@Jin for what it's worth, on English.SE for the check there's no border, so I see either a green check or nothing -- very clear. Votes are done there by color highlighting over the whole area, which is also clear.

@jin the checkmark "accepted answer" icon is a little bit hard to recognize as a checkmark if you're not familiar with it, no?

Jin
@MonicaCellio so maybe i should color the round border as well for the on-state?

8:01 PM
..and now my gravatar clashes! <pouts> ;)

Jin
@HodofHod does it look like a checkmark to you? or it should be more slanted and off centered?
i thought it was obvious, then again i'm biased

But seriously, it looks awesome! Thank you so much for this @Jin! Especially thanks for listening to our input, even when we couldn't agree between ourselves on anything :D
2
@Jin I feel like the right arm : left arm ratio is a little bit vague

Jin
@HodofHod my pleasure. it was really fun for me. I went in not knowing a lot about Judaism.(I still don't!). But I loved the design process. the research phase has been educational.
@HodofHod ok i'll tweak that.

@Jin coloring the border would make a big difference for me, if that doesn't mess up the design too much.

@Jin also, perhaps the angle part could be slightly deeper

Jin
8:03 PM
@MonicaCellio no it's easy to fix. it will go in tonight with the daily production build. so you probably won't see the update until tomorrow morning.

@Jin, I just sent two screen shots from English.SE along to my posting proxy (thanks :-) ), for comparison.

Jin
another thing I point out, for some of the sidebar modules, community bulletin, chatbox, help tips etc, I'm using the fancy border @DoubleAA suggested
however, since those boxes' heights vary, i couldn't just use a fixed sized background image. So i went with CSS3's border-image.

Jin
it works in chrome, firefox and safari. but IE doesn't support this, yet.

^^ @MonicaCellio's EL&U screenshots

Jin
8:06 PM
But I'm going to keep it this way, because it's just matter of time IE will implement border-image. Also judging from our stats, IE user base is rather low on the site.

@Jin good idea :-)

@Jin I was about to ask how many IE users we had. :-)

Jin
@MonicaCellio 15% ish.
but not as low as I'd hoped :)

@HodofHod you'll just have to get a new gravatar, then. :-)
@Jin yeah, that's more than I expected.

@MonicaCellio @HodofHod I recommend black and white :-P

Jin
8:08 PM
@MonicaCellio are you active on English.se too?

@Jin variable but yes -- not answering as much these days but I still read every day. (And it's my highest SE rep.)

Jin
@MonicaCellio ah so you received the top user swag package from English.se before

@MonicaCellio @msh210 Nooooo! You can't make me change my gravatar! @ShmuelBrin may like to change his every other week, but not me!

@msh210 I have the avatar I do because I can't draw my own and I found some icon-making site that could come reasonably close. I don't have the Photoshop skillz (or software) to replace the coffee cup with a can of Diet Coke. :-)

@HodofHod Yours isn't even custom! (Or doesn't look custom, anyway. Is it?) Design one, and keep it.

8:10 PM
@Jin Nebech. Maybe add a notification bar reccomending a switch to Chrome ;)

@Jin no, I missed out on that. :-( (I was late to the party.)

@msh210 I'm no graphic designer.

@MonicaCellio Mine was my X-Face: when I had an e-mail and Usenet client that could add add X-Face headers.

Jin
I still have nightmares about the English.se swag I made

@Jin ("Nebech" = "oh, poor...".)

8:11 PM
@msh210 I remember Usenet well, but what's an X-face?

@msh210 btw, while we're on the subject, I've been meaning to ask: what's your gravatar a picture of?

@HodofHod Nor am I. Mine is simple enough for even me to have designed it. :-)

@Jin you made their swag? Cool. I was something like three down on the third page when they announced that, so I just missed.

Jin
@MonicaCellio I make all SE sites' swag :)

An X-Face is a small bitmap (48 × 48 pixels, black and white) image which is added to a Usenet posting or e-mail message, typically showing a picture of the author's face. The image data is included in the posting as encoded text, and attached with an 'X-Face' header. It was devised by [http://users.rsise.anu.edu.au/~jaa/ James Ashton]. It is one of the outgrowths of the Vismon program developed at Bell Labs in the 1980s. While many programs support X-Face, most of them are free software and based on Unix or its variations, such as KMail or Sylpheed. The most common email programs thoug...

8:13 PM
@Jin oh cool. Well let me compliment you on the beautiful moleskin books from UX.

Jin
@MonicaCellio oh thanks! I gave quite a few of them away when I was at SxSW. designers loved them.

@HodofHod A knot. My doctoral research was in a branch of topology closely related to knot theory. The particular knot in my gravatar is one of several knots that are sometimes called (not by mathematicians AFAIK) "the true lovers' knot"; I liked the sound of it.

@msh210 thanks. I was reading first with rn and then in emacs on a unix terminal (yes, terminal), so I wouldn't have been able to see them anyway. :-)

@MonicaCellio I couldn't see them, either (using PINE and tin), but I could post 'em. :-)

@Jin our designers are jealous of mine. :-) (I'm a developer, not a designer.)
@Jin at SxSW did you happen to see Pepsi's zeitgeist board? (bunch of big monitors)

Jin
8:17 PM
@MonicaCellio no I didn't.

@Jin bummer. I helped make some of that.
@msh210 I still use pine! Nobody can force terrible formatting (or viruses) into my email that way. If I really need to see a message in all its formatting glory, I pop over to my gmail mirror.

@Jin Btw, the favicon is a bit hard to recognize as a tree. Perhaps it would be more clear without leaves? (Just fishing here.)
If anyone does not yet have the new favicon, btw, you can force it by going to cdn.sstatic.net/judaism/img/favicon.ico and hard refreshing

Jin
@HodofHod that's what I did first actually, it looked a bit bare. i may have to redo that favicon from scratch, pixel by pixel
right now I just resized the bigger version

@Jin, might you be able to spare a CSS clue? I'm trying to make the "question", "tags", etc links smaller because they're overlapping the logo and wiping out the "mi yodeya" (I need bigger fonts in general but not those). I tried overriding mainnavs but that didn't do anything, presumably because what I really need is an a within a mainnavs. Can I represent that? (I don't want to make all a tags small...)

Jin
8:32 PM
@MonicaCellio .nav a { font-size: 13px; }
or whatever value you'd like for the font-size

@Jin oh, first one gets a '.' but the next doesn't -- thanks!

I totally did not see that favicon hard refresh thing in your meta post, @Jin. I don't know how I skipped over that.

@Jin beautiful, thanks! Now I have a complete logo again. :-)

@HodofHod what's the problem with your avatar?

Jin
this design is pretty unique.. the logo is centered, and I had to split the menu items around it.
there's actually a tiny "blind spot" in the tree trunk that doesn't work... (shhh)

8:39 PM
@Jin at my browser's font defaults, the row of links was wrapping and "unanswered" came around and clobbered the text. Now it doesn't, yay. (To get body fonts I can read I sometimes get "header"-style fonts that are too big, so this kind of wrapping isn't completely new to me, but it's such a pretty logo that I had to fix this!)

Jin
@MonicaCellio cool thanks!
i'm going to get some dinner 'n nap. but i'll be back later this evening. congrats again!

Congratulations
@Jin I find your work very beautiful. Thanks.

Jin
@jutky thanks!

@jin I just noticed this on the english.se site. Just wanted to point it out.
Running mozilla.
same result on chrome

Jin
@ShmuelBrin ok i'll fix
ok going to dinner for real this time! ttyl.

Q: How to handle "clothesline for my cute vort" questions?

ShalomIt's a common yeshivish style that rather than just say: Rabbi X reads the verse as Y. or: Rabbi X reads the verse as Y. And I think that fits well with the wording of such-and-such. Instead you have to go: Why exactly does the verse (Gemara, etc.) have to say this? It could have ...

9:58 PM
Is anyone else having trouble with editing their chat posts in here?
For me, when I push 'up' to edit, it starts the edit, turns the text white, but forgets to turn the background dark. So I can't see anything.

WAF
10:21 PM
@DoubleAA Same.

yes, I have the same issue

WAF
10:32 PM
When did the link format change to "judaism.stackexchange.com/q/#/#" from ".../questions/#/$TITLE"?

10:59 PM
@DoubleAA same
@WAF Where do you see that?
I'm so unused to the location of the logo! I keep moving my mouse to the top-left whenever I want to go to the home page.
I guess I'll get used to it

11:12 PM
@Jin Seems there is some issue with the chat-design (see my previous comment). I don't know if that belongs on meta, so I'm just pinging you here.

11:23 PM
@DoubleAA Meta would be fine instead (or if you get no reply here).
@WAF Both exist, in different places. On the homepage, links to questions are still to /questions/number/titlelike-thing but the "link" on each question page is to /q/number/your-user-number - this has been true for a little while already.

I like the HodofHod-color highlighting of your name when you are pinged in chat!

We just rolled out three new badges to encourage sharing worthy questions:

Each badge can be earned only once, and each must be earned on a different question. Also, the tracked IPs must originate from outside our existing network.

So how do you share questions? I mentioned in an earlier post that we support a shorter URL form specifically for sharing:

http://diy.stackexchange.com/q/970/123

You can access the shorter URL form using the twitter and facebook sharing icons on public beta sites, or by right-clicking and copying the link conveniently provided under each question, on any site: …
