@lockstep Congrats on reaching 100K :)

Hi @HarishKumar! How are you? :)

2 hours later…

@PauloCereda Hi Paulo Doing good
How about you? It has been a mess with my time table. I manage to sneak inside tex.sx through my new smart phone.
:)

9:27 AM
Any Tikzperts to rescue?

@kan Not sure if I qualify, but what's the problem?

kan
@TorbjørnT. Most certainly you do! :)
The problem is, I tried to use fill with a matrix, but, I am unable to fill!

@kan Fill what exactly, do you have an MWE?

kan
I am just having the border joining the matrix entries...
@TorbjørnT. Yes. :)
Just a second:
 \matrix [matrix of nodes, nodes in empty cells, left delimiter = {(}, right delimiter = {)}, row sep = 5.5mm, column sep = 6mm] (matrix) {
     & & & & & \\
     & & & & & \\
     & & & & & \\
   };
\fill[color=cyan] (RSK-3-2) -- (RSK-2-4) -- (RSK-1-6);

@kan fill may need a coordinate, so try using e.g. RSK-1-1.center.
\documentclass[border=2mm]{standalone}
\usepackage{tikz}
\usetikzlibrary{matrix}
\begin{document}
\begin{tikzpicture}
\matrix [matrix of nodes, nodes in empty cells, left delimiter = {(}, right delimiter = {)}, row sep = 5.5mm, column sep = 6mm] (RSK) {
     & & & & & \\
     & & & & & \\
     & & & & & \\
   };
\fill[color=cyan] (RSK-1-1.center) -- (RSK-1-4.center) -- (RSK-3-4.center) -- (RSK-3-1.center) -- cycle;
\end{tikzpicture}
\end{document}

Q: TikZ doesn't fill when node coordinates are used

AkiRossCan someone please explain me why the following code doesn't result in a fill? And why, sometimes, I get such "very thin lines" artifact (that's visibile in my picture)? \begin{tikzpicture} \node (A) at (0,0) {A}; \node (B) at (1,0) {B}; \node (C) at (1,1) {C}; \fill[red] (A) -- (B) -- (C) --cy...

Thanks!

@DavidCarlisle: no new answers today? :(

10:43 AM
@PauloCereda Lazy boy.

@egreg Gardening again? :)

@PauloCereda Maybe working. Strange. ;-)

@egreg We have Corpus Christi on Thursday, who needs to work this week? :)

@PauloCereda We have it next Sunday.

@egreg Really? Is it considered a national holiday in Italy?

10:58 AM
@PauloCereda It used to be a holiday, on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday; it's been transferred to the following Sunday from several years.

@egreg Ah I see. Since my city is very small, we use to have Corpus Christ on Thursday, the procession doesn't cause trouble to the traffic. :)
@egreg: this is from Matão, a nearby city. It's probably one of the most artistic works for the feast in the whole Brazil: fotografia.folha.uol.com.br/galerias/… It's simply amazing.

11:32 AM
@PauloCereda it it really amazing, very beautiful

@dıʞsdoʇ :)

@PauloCereda I have to work occasionally:( (yesterday was holiday)

@DavidCarlisle oh. :(

12:19 PM
Word of advice: turn off auto-correct for iPad. :)

@PauloCereda But auto correct on i<Things> can be so much fun (for other people): damnyouautocorrect.com

@TorbjørnT. LOL this is evil. :)

how can I define a scriptscriptscriptstyle?

I tried to tweet from my iPad. Thankfully I checked the message before sending it, otherwise I'd have an epic fail. :)
@DominicMichaelis The question is not how, but why? :)
Do you need a smaller font?
Actually, what am I saying.
Damn, I'm stupid today again. :)

@Paulo Well I have something like $ \int_{a^{b_c}}$
sorry let me make a real mwe

12:29 PM
@DominicMichaelis I'm sorry, I misread your question. My brain is malfunctioning today. :)

\documentclass{article}
\begin{document}
\[ \int_{a^{c_b}} \]
\end{document}

@DominicMichaelis you can't.

12:44 PM
@David oh that isn't surprising, the question is if you can :D

@DominicMichaelis Ah trying to trick me with English Grammar:-) TeX math mode only has three sizes. You can of course make a box with a font of arbitrary size but (a) it won't work in a natural way indifferent math contexts and (b) it is pretty hard on the reader to distinguish anything below 5pt (the default scritscriptsize of a 10pt document)

1:10 PM
@PauloCereda Very nice! The works in my office are almost finished. I still have a big hole over my head. :) Hopefully they'll fix it by tomorrow.

@egreg "hole over head" is better than "hole in head"
@egreg I suppose you'll get the tick but you answered the question that was meant (how can I define a big operator) not the question that was asked (how are the existing ones defined) I'm sure that's cheating:-)

@DavidCarlisle That have been there since the beginning. ;-)

@egreg Oh my. :)

@PauloCereda Well, I was told that the works would have been done on 22 and 23 May. :(

@egreg Wow, they are a little late. :)
How complicated is to create a texbucket, a code repository designed specifically to host TeX packages?

1:55 PM
Kicked out of the office again. Fixing the ceiling.

2:34 PM
I hope someone can clear the following up for me: as far as I can deduce from the Companion the right way to avoid inter-sentence space after a period which does not delimit sentences (e.g., i.e., etc.) is to use \@ as in e.g.\@. However, I have seen plenty of places suggest using a forced interword space \ instead. Which one is preferable ?
tex.stackexchange.com/questions/55105/… would suggest using \ instead, is that about right ?

3:00 PM
@ach Just asked and answered
1
Q: \@ vs. \␣ after abbreviation. (Read backslash-at vs. backslash-space)

MvGI was used to write abbreviations like foo i.e.\ bar but today learned that I could also write them as foo i.e.\@ bar. Both of these apparently have the effect of keeping the space to its normal inter-word size, as opposed to the larger after-sentence space. The fact that there are two possible w...

@egreg ah nice

Dennis Gilmore has announced the availability of the beta release of Fedora 19: "We've opened the box for the Fedora 19 'Schrödinger's Cat' beta release and confirmed it's alive! Ready to purr at the latest free and open source technology?"

@PauloCereda What does people have with Schrödinger's Cat? The poor cat.

@MarcoDaniel I heard that Schrödinger used this as a pickup line. :)

@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: The current score is egreg 215 vs. 245 David. So far, David is winning.

@PauloCereda What is a pickup line?

@MarcoDaniel According to Google, "conversation opener with the intent of engaging an unfamiliar person for romance, or dating." :)
For example:

@PauloCereda If I said you had a beautiful body, would you hold it against me

3:47 PM
me: are you a robust command?
girl: WHAT?!
me: because my heart is fragile for you. <3
girl: WHAT?!
@JosephWright LOL dirty hungarian

@PauloCereda Oh dear, that is bad

@JosephWright I know. :)

@JosephWright funny ;-) and understandable.

@JosephWright I am no longer infected!

You have beautiful thighs.

3:53 PM
@cgnieder That's downright creepy

@JosephWright lol

Roses are red,
but no flowers are needed,
my love for you is \huge
TeX capacity exceeded.
This is pure gold.

where is that from

@ach It's from a Monty Python sketch. :)

I doubt \huge and TeX featured in a Monty Python sketch

@DavidCarlisle :P

@egreg thought you might like that.

@DavidCarlisle Still +700 for the month. :P

@egreg yes I had several days off site this month to give you a chance (not that you need it, you regularly get more rep than me anyway:-)

ach
4:55 PM
Is there a !!/battle graph ?

@ach There are two, which you can superimpose at home: eg mine is

ach
@DavidCarlisle You mean I can superimpose them in my head or is there a programmatic way of doing it ?

@ach I meant the latter but don't have a program to hand, but just from first principles it must be possible:-)

ach
@DavidCarlisle Well I am sure it is possible, just as one can check daily rep manually, but that is the beauty of ``!!/battle``` no :) ? Anyway, just curious

@MarcoDaniel egreg mentioned that one yesterday: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/9624318#9624318

@TorbjørnT. Thanks

@MarcoDaniel Bogus. :(

Hopefully sabertooth will make justice for L3 packages. :)

ach
sabertooths are extinct though

@PauloCereda sabertooth or saberraider ;-)

@MarcoDaniel LOL I can't believe you brought this up. :P

@PauloCereda our childhood.

@MarcoDaniel Yep. :)

@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: The current score is egreg 230 vs. 745 David. So far, David is winning.

holy dear

@DominicMichaelis David got a 500 rep bounty, that's why. :)

That doesn't change anything :D

@egreg: I'm afraid you can't beat David today because he cheated with a 500 rep bounty. :)

@DominicMichaelis A totally unmerited 500 bounty. ;-) Well, it was not adding a missing %

5:50 PM
I take unmeriteds bounties too :D

@DominicMichaelis We all do, I guess. :)

@PauloCereda Just answer more questions by adorable bug or whatever they're called today ;-)

@StephanLehmke LOL
!!/eightball Does @David deserve that bounty?
@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: The great 8-ball says: as I see it, yes.
Oh.

!!/eightball How does it come, that the TeX bot is named Psmith?

@DominicMichaelis Psmith, the TeX bot: The great 8-ball says: I sense conflict.

Q: Psmith, the friendly TeX bot, at your service

Paulo CeredaPrologue We love hanging out in our main chatroom. It's a very friendly place, where we talk about virtually everything - even TeX, sometimes! I decided to give it a try and add a few "extra features" to our chatroom, and the result is presented in this meta thread. I was planning to implement ...

Thanks

@DominicMichaelis Psmith, the TeX bot: Paulo is not listening to any songs at the moment.

6:39 PM
@MarcoDaniel Yes, I will be writing to the author later today

@PauloCereda why do you sound surprised?

Q: What's the percentage of doublefree Questions on tex.stackexchange with an already good answer that David Carlisle improved upon

ToschoThe title says it all. But for the question to be posted I had to enter this sentence as well.

ach
what is a doublefree question ?

what is this ? ^^

ach
that sounds like something from 1984

7:40 PM
I surely can and do improve upon answers by David. :P Actually, sometimes my answer is even correct.

@David you hadn't fniish an answer on one of my question

@egreg Do...
...quickly...
...he's not around!

8:19 PM
@Werner I prefer the sweet smell of stealing a green tick from him. ;-)

@egreg He's back... the smell will be even sweeter now.

Hello guys, why did you kick the german guys out? :P

@Werner I anticipated an easy one: \parfillskip=0pt was too tempting.

@percusse Was?

@egreg I was too slow against your \parfillskip answer.
I was writing something up with a reference to TeX by Topic.

8:28 PM
@AlanMunn They are secretly planning to take over TeX.SX in the other chat room (if they didn't already) :-)

Wie definiere ich eigene Kommandos? \begin{bootcamp} \end{bootcamp}
from TeXwelt.de ....

ach
what ?

@percusse blame @MarcoDaniel :)

ach
The Problem with TeX.SE is that there are too many wizard level users, by the time I have thought about / looked up a problem someone has come along and already solved it :)

8:38 PM
@Werner Added some theory and a reference to the TeXbook.

@ach Wizards; a few, procrastinators and manual readers; too many :)

@egreg I can only upvote once. :-|

ach
@percusse At least it seems biblatex questions are not so popular, there I have time to respond ;)

@ach I've started a basic user manual once but it's a monster so I left it out.

ach
texdoc biblatex is quite good
@percusse though it has 4 levels of sectioning A.B.C.D
so it's not exactly short

8:48 PM
@ach Yes but that's a user reference. With manual I have some straightforward examples etc. in mind.

ach
@percusse somehow I found biblatex styles etc. to be quite straightforward, compared to plain TeX or LaTeX, but I can see how people would want simple examples
assuming you know what the most requested things are of course

@percusse biblatex sorely needs a good tutorial manual.
@percusse Hey some of us read package code as well. :)

@ach A full style is not an easy task to obtain. There are just too many details. I've started out with a ieeetran compatibility example because I've needed it then it escalated and then stopped :) It might the case that I'm just lazy.
@AlanMunn @ jungle is a good place to find some peace of mind
:)

ach
@percusse do you mean a full style has a lot of details in it (e.g. APA has lots and lots of directives to control every last detail) ? That's well, a question of the style ?

@percusse TeX was made for procrastination: just think of \expandafter

8:55 PM
@AlanMunn Or \noexpand

@ach That's true, but there's also the fact that biblatex has many ways to tweak things, so even understanding how to implement a particular style isn't trivial.
@egreg Not to mention \relax

ach
What about \smash
that does not sound too relaxing
@AlanMunn yes definitely, there are usually many ways of doing things in biblatex, almost too many

@egreg There must be an \ohok primitive for ambiguous code.

@percusse There's \inaccessible that can jump off the computer and bite you.

I'm trying to find an online version of a Fawlty Towers episode where Basil tries (and fails) to speak German with one of the guests. :)
@AlanMunn: you are versed in good series, maybe you can help me. :)

9:01 PM
@PauloCereda Sometimes I really think that you have reincarnated without a full reset on the memory. How can you possibly know all those?
@egreg I have been using Microsoft Project in the last three weeks. I think I've been bitten enough. I never thought that I would hate Gantt charts

@percusse awww <3 Since I have no one to practice spoken English, I watch a lot of series. :)
@percusse LOL at some point, everything can be done with Gantt charts. :)

@PauloCereda Take a long haired dictionary

@percusse LOL
Not the one I wanted, but this scene is quite epic. :)

@PauloCereda I don't know any Fawlty Towers dialogues.

@AlanMunn Oh. :)

9:12 PM
@egreg, @MarcoDaniel Have sent e-mail about 'l3ctr2e': will report back

@DominicMichaelis ?

@PauloCereda That would be 'The Germans'

@JosephWright Ah!

@Werner @egreg no but I have enough understanding of computers to read the logs of messages discussing me in my absence...

@DavidCarlisle Hey, I'm clean this time. :)

9:17 PM
@PauloCereda :) Hi!

@tohecz Hi Tom! How are you? :)

log reading ... had to be done

@percusse hahaha

@PauloCereda I'm fine. I've just re-installed the piano after a week off (I took it with me to our science workshop) :)
@percusse :)
If you needed a new tiling in the hall (5 tile shapes):

@percusse And click on the Art link. Guess what shows up @PauloCereda

@percusse yeah, I can see that. However, they seem to be periodic, mine is not :P
@AlanMunn :)

@AlanMunn futility closet is one of my favorites. I highly recommend (in case you don't know it already) There are many things that would please you too.

@percusse I'm starting to see that. Browsing the language part right now.

@AlanMunn woohoo

9:47 PM
Browsing superseded by tornado warning. :(

@AlanMunn Oh my!

A few miles south of me it seems, so for the moment nothing to worry about, but our tornado sirens were wailing so I needed to see what was up.

10:05 PM
We're all anxious about @AlanMunn

10:51 PM
@AlanMunn I hope all's fine, pal!

11:37 PM
Did anybody notice changes on the starting page?

Q: Can someone explain the homepage _new_ look?

zunCan someone explain the new look of the Tex.StackExchange homepage and what is displayed? I could find no reference to the changes and did not know who to ask. I think I get the Here's how it works section, but I don't understand the rest of the page. Previously, when a user signed onto the home...

@egreg To be honest, I didn't notice any change.
@AndrewStacey: Hi Andrew, just in case your mail provider put me in the spam box, I've sent you an email. :)

@egreg no, I wonder if he got on the featured tab or the mobile site

11:56 PM
@DavidCarlisle @egr I asked him for a pic proof, hope it doesn't hurt helps
