@PauloCereda what's that duck doing there:-)

12:15 AM
Here is an example of pdf generated, before and after adding \usepackage{lmodern}. The difference is amazing. I can't believe that I have been using low quality pdf's for years like this.
You can guess which one of the above is using \usepackage{lmodern}
This was at 800% magnification. It is very clear on the screen which is the much sharper font
Might not be as obvious after taking screen shot. But on my monitor the difference is really amazing.

Q: Compiling with XeTex does not respond

aribloggerI have downloaded a CV template from http://www.latextemplates.com/template/plasmati-graduate-cv, and I tried to compile it by making an user command xetex %. @Jake @GonzaloMedina I think in tex.stackexchange.com/q/116285/16595 is an extra error hiding: The fact that the second TikZ picture misses a definition for (kink) is the reason that the line is not scaled like everything else. The actual answers already deal with the fact that the line is scaled twice (once when (z) is defined, once when (kink) is defined).

@Qrrbrbirlbel Yeah, I noticed that (and corrected it in my answer)

@Nasser for TL DVD same for new 2013 also and its works on windows linux also

@texenthusiast thanks. Will join tug now and order the DVD then.

@Nasser I suggest you buy a book and donate. Also see Plan for TeX Live 2013

I am joining tug now so to get the DVD for 2013. I have lots of latex books already :)

@Nasser other option you may get via TeX user groups close to you to avoid of shipping delays.

@texenthusiast I am really confused by the tug web site. I filled the form, select paypal expected to get to paypal web page, but it is not sending me there. I logged now to my paypal to send the money, but do not know where to send the money to. The email I get from tug just now does not show what email to send the money to
I remember it said something like tug@paypal? but the page is gone now

5:08 AM
@Nasser although i did not use paypal. I see paypal@tug.org

Ok, thanks,. I just send the money using paypal.
good thing I am student, the fees are $65, otherwise it would be too expensive

@kan I'm not using listings very much; with AMS classes I write math. ;-)

kan
@egreg Oh, me too. :) I wanted to throw in some sage code. :)
@egreg Can you please tell me where in the Mathmode.ltx is the color for the listings background chosen? I can see [AlLaTeX]TeX but, are these Herbert's own macros?

@kan If I measure the color, I get the RGB values 255 255 207

kan
@egreg Ooh! I also got hold of this (from his MathCol source):
\lstset{%
    language=[AlLaTeX]TEX,%
    float=hbp,%
    basicstyle=\ttfamily\small, %
    identifierstyle=\color{colIdentifier}, %
    keywordstyle=\color{colKeys}, %
    stringstyle=\color{colString}, %
    commentstyle=\color{colComments}, %
    columns=flexible, %
    tabsize=3, %
    frame=single, %
    extendedchars=true, %
    showspaces=false, %
    showstringspaces=false, %
    numbers=left, %
    numberstyle=\tiny, %
    breaklines=true, %
    backgroundcolor=\color{hellgelb}, %
    breakautoindent=true, %
And, these color macros are as follows:
\definecolor{hellmagenta}{rgb}{1,0.75,0.9}
\definecolor{hellcyan}{rgb}{0.75,1,0.9}
\definecolor{hellgelb}{rgb}{1,1,0.8}
\definecolor{colKeys}{rgb}{0,0,1}
\definecolor{colIdentifier}{rgb}{0,0,0}
\definecolor{colComments}{rgb}{1,0,0}
\definecolor{colString}{rgb}{0,0.5,0}
\definecolor{darkyellow}{rgb}{1,0.9,0}

@kan That's it: hellgelb (gelb is German for yellow)

kan
@egreg Ooh!! But, I wonder why the "hell" prefix. :)

@kan hell -- get a bit whiter ;-)

@egreg Where to?

kan
9:20 AM
@MarcoDaniel Ooh! So, yellowish white ? :)

@kan hellgelb = light yellow :)

kan
@cgnieder Sweet!! Thank you for the clarification!
should I pass t also to float key?

@JosephWright The OP suggests opendata.stackexchange.com which seems reasonable

@egreg OK

kan
9:50 AM
Oh, need some more help with this listings!
Can some one please tell me how to get one word alone to appear in a particular colour always?

10:02 AM
@lockstep update: 35 to go!

kan
@egreg What tool do you use to measure rgb values of a color sample? :)
I was looking to emulate a greenish color...

@kan On Mac OS X there's an application called "Digital Color Meter" :)

kan
@egreg Mac. :(
OK. Could you please tell me what I should put in for the green color that appears in listings.pdf (texdoc listings)

@kan I get rgb .06 .44 .01 (in decimal)
Or more simply, (0,0.5,0)

kan
@egreg Hmm, I see! Thanks, I was off by a lot! My color intuition -> 0 . :)

10:10 AM
@kan With xcolor it should be \definecolor{mygreen}{green!50}

kan
@egreg Oh, dear! I am using color package... Should I shift to xcolor?
I think it is straight forward?

@kan Definitely.

kan
OK. Eg.
\definecolor{hellgelb}{rgb}{1,1,0.8}
should be:
\definecolor{hellgelb}{red!100!blue!100!green!80} ??

@kan I don't think so.

kan
Indeed. :(
I am trying to figure out...

10:19 AM
@kan The ! syntax isn't easy. But specifying directly rgb is possible.

kan
@egreg God! The author must be a mathematician! He wants me to go through the entire theory without an example.
3
I can, but not for a silly colors business.
It must be Math...

10:32 AM
The xcolor actually handles more than 2 colors on the same time ?

kan
10:55 AM
@egreg Oh, he is a differential geometer.

@kan Only algebraic geometers can be worse. ;-)

kan
@egreg :-) Agreed! (Although, I haven't yet come to this world...)

1 hour later…
12:16 PM
@DavidCarlisle I couldn't resist to add a duck to the picture. :)
@kan: I'm sure you figured this out: those values are obtained by dividing each value of RGB by 255. :)

1:07 PM
@lockstep update: -15!

@egreg Leave it to me. :)
-5 now! :)

2:31 PM
@DominicMichaelis I'm disconcerted about answers in Math.se; in the case of an equation such as $x-5\sqrt{x}+4=0$ people suggest $x=y^2$. Which is utterly wrong without also saying $y\ge0$. In other cases, irrational equations are solved without any check on the solutions, so for $\sqrt{x+1}=x-5$ (or similar) the solution `$x=3$ is offered. :-(

@egreg yeah most time the answers are not that strict, because some are concerned to do others homework

@DominicMichaelis They do worse, by suggesting wrong methods. Students consider the site as authoritative.

@egreg most times false answers are downvoted or commented as false answers. Not very strict answers are not always downvoted

@egreg Huh, that's not what I would expect from an expert site (even if it is homework for students)

@cgnieder well the expert site is mathoverflow and they are VERY strict about homework

2:45 PM
@cgnieder: being a guitar expert, do you know Tanglewood? I've never heard of this brand before. :(

@cgnieder Unfortunately it isn't an expert site. You can find very peculiar answers (along with very good ones).

@DominicMichaelis I don't mean expert in the sense of the skill level of the questions. Answers should be right even if you do other peoples homework.
@PauloCereda No, never heard of them either

@cgnieder I'm intrigued. Friends of mine said it's a very impressive guitar: madeinbrazil.com.br/images/product/33038.jpg

Well everyone can answer so the chance of wrong answers is always there. And you can give the right idea even though your answer isn't right (which clearly shouldn't be done =

@DominicMichaelis Well I can't really comment as I don't follow the math sites. I only hope the wrong answers are not being upvoted, at least not without a comment on why or where they're wrong
:9621340 sorry, had a »not« missing

@cgnieder GEMA does it for us.

@cgnieder <3
@MarcoDaniel I'll think of something. :)

4:42 PM
@egreg: What do you think? Which equation is correct?
\documentclass[]{article}
\begin{document}
\[\int\limits_{b}^{a} x^3+4x^2+x-2\ dx\]
\[\int\limits_{b}^{a} x^3+4x^2+x-2\,\mathrm{d}x\]
 \end{document}
For me the second one
\ dx\ vs. \,\mathrm{d}x

@MarcoDaniel Have you seen tex.stackexchange.com/questions/14821/… ? egreg didn't answer that one, but he has commented.

Tikzperts! Please help!
I am unable to understand why nodes at empty cells does not create nodes. I still get (m-i-j) shape unknown!
@TorbjørnT. Would you happen to know how to create an empty tikz matrix{} ?

@kan There is an option: nodes in empty cells

kan
@MarcoDaniel I am using it, but it seems to have no effect....
Oh! Wait!
Figured out!!
Now, I'll have to put node at a couple of places...

5:15 PM
@kan Worked:
\documentclass[]{article}
\usepackage{tikz}
\usetikzlibrary{matrix}
\begin{document}
\begin{tikzpicture}
\matrix (matrix) [row sep=1cm, column sep=1cm,matrix of nodes,nodes in empty cells]
{
  & \\
  & \\
  & \\
};
\draw (matrix-1-1) -- (matrix-3-2);
\end{tikzpicture}
\end{document}

kan
@MarcoDaniel yeah, the trick was adding matrix of nodes. Without that, I get errors.
I tried to be Poirot. But, I could not. ;-)
Later I tried every choice of keys from manual.

@kan LOL

kan
By principle of inclusion and exclusion, I figured out what was right. :)

@MarcoDaniel Neither; I use \,dx Others disagree, but usually they're applied mathematicians or engineers. ;-)
@MarcoDaniel For intensive usage: \newcommand{\diff}{\mathop{}\!d} and then \diff x will automatically do the right thing.

@egreg As an engineer I prefer your \diff ;-)

kan
5:31 PM
@Marco daniel how do I draw a vertical line from an entry in the matrix of a given length? Do I need to compute with pgfmathparse?
Oh, there is this syntax:
--++(90:<len>)

@kan \draw[thick,red] (matrix-1-1)--++(1cm,0);

@MarcoDaniel Usually engineers want an upright "d".

kan
@MarcoDaniel Oho... I see... So, this means, the distances as tuple means, length in x-direction and y-direction respectively?

please if i have no ideas about latex what is good way to start ?
ya wlad el laziina

@egreg Indeed ;-)
@kan yes.

@FadyKamal Hi there are a number of good starter guide questions on the site. Here's one:

Q: Best Way to Start Using LaTeX/TeX?

JFWI'm not really a programmer but am quite interested in learning how to use LaTeX/TeX. I've looked it up on Wikipedia and scanned through it and the documents created through this way of editing is just beautiful. Formulas are also available within it too, so writing math thesis or physics papers...

If you are writing in Arabic, you should use XeLaTeX.

Q: Typesetting a document using Arabic script

mariaI'm using TeXlive (2009-7) on Ubuntu 10.04. I've installed texlive-lang-arabic and I can't find out how should I compose the preamble to be able to use it. The babel's documentation I've found in the Internet http://www.tug.org/texlive/Contents/live/texmf-dist/doc/generic/babel/ is probably out-o...

I highly recommend getting a real book. Marc van Dongen's LaTeX and Friends is excellent and very up-to-date. (A lot of the classic books are now a bit dated for absolute beginners).

6:09 PM
@AlanMunn Very true: I'd say either Marc's or Nicola's books are the best starting points today

@JosephWright Yes, it's sad to say, but both Kopka and Daly and the LaTeX Companion are now a bit dangerous for beginners. LTC is still really useful though.

@egreg Don't know this package: link?
@AlanMunn Things have moved on, as you say. Kopka and Daly still a good intro but you'd have to say 'and buy X as well', while TLC does require some knowledge of where to check it's not been overtaken by events

Q: siunitx carry error when rounding? \num{89.80} renders as 810

Dave KleinschmidtI've found what I'm afraid is either a bug or a supremely foolish error on my part: whenever I ask siunitx to render \num{89.80}, rounding by figures, it renders it as "810.". Likewise, \num{898.0} comes out as "8100.". After a bit of poking around, it appears that this happens whenever roundin...

Answer is 'you have an old version, sorry': should I say as much?

@JosephWright I guess so, and then close as too localized.
(Although using your mod powers to do so, might not look very good, seeing as you're the author...) :)

Back, we are facing some heavy power shortage here. :(

@PauloCereda Have you been playing your electric guitar again? :)

6:17 PM
@AlanMunn No distortion this time, I swear. :)

@AlanMunn lol!!!

I was, like, "now, the epic guitar solo!" then... power off. :(

@PauloCereda on the other hand, I spent a nice week with co-workers and mates, having my Yamaha CP with me :)

@tohecz Yay! How's your singing going, BTW?

@PauloCereda I tried it and I think it might be ok, however, I need to get a good some recorder

@kan Sorry, was watching Sherlock.

@egreg and everyone else -- Thanks for all the kind words! When I joined tex.sx in August 2010, I didn't even dream of ever reachig 100k ...

Publicity (as if it were needed) for TeX Welt: texdev.net/2013/05/27/tex-welt-a-new-german-tex-blog
@StefanKottwitz Is TeX Welt in the TeXample aggregator?

6:31 PM
@JosephWright I will add it. Just waited for one post to be improved a bit.
Though I'm a bit unsure because it's German.

@StefanKottwitz I can see that point, hence asking. On the other hand, having a single feed is useful
The problem with writing a blog is people then ask you to write articles: see texdev.net/2013/04/25/moving-from-mercurial-to-git/#comments

@StefanKottwitz IIRC there's also a French blog in the feed

@StefanKottwitz Nice work on the blog
@cgnieder Yes, I remember some non-English articles
German and French are OK with me :-)

@JosephWright Take it as a compliment

@StefanKottwitz :-)

6:34 PM
@JosephWright and return it - "You write nice articles, would you write guest posts for my blog?" ;-)
@JosephWright Thanks, I hope it's a nice playground and we will have fun :-)
... and we will be asked to write articles.

6:55 PM
Adding a self-answer based on someone else's comment: chutzpah.

@AlanMunn o.O
!!/answer define chutzpah
Psmith, the TeX bot, in fixed font mode:

chutzpah  (English word) | definition
noun | (Yiddish) unbelievable gall; insolence; audacity
Oh.

Psmith's definition is probably a little stronger that most people's. Audacity is closest.

@AlanMunn Indeed, Wikipedia agrees

7:20 PM

@egreg Have to ask for a name change!

@lockstep Congratulations to you and thanks again for your great work

@egreg All looks like the sort of thing I'd hope we can avoid

@JosephWright I really don't know what it's for.

Also, we really don't want anyone calling packages l3... outside of official team ones

Q: Meta participation vs main reputation and associated badges

This is different on the child-Meta sites elsewhere. On these sites reputation is substituted for participation which is measured differen...

Q: Badges on Meta vs Main

WernerSince the Meta site does not maintain a reputation, certain badges related to reputation (like Epic and Legendary are unavailable. Which other Meta badges are (un-)attainable? For the unattainable ones, why do they still appear under the list of Meta badges?

...for those interested in becoming a legendary meta-person. That can be interpreted in so many ways. :-|

Q: Six ducks in a pond

marshallThis puzzle has got me stumped. $6$ ducks are swimming on a pond radius $5$. Show that at any moment there are two ducks a distance at most $5$ apart.

@egreg Hey! Can I flag that question as plagiarism? We are the duck-related community. :)

@PauloCereda We really need a tag.

@egreg Indeed! :)

8:21 PM
@Werner Don't the Mortarboard, Epic and Legendary badges simply reflect upvotes (roughly more than 20 in a day, modulo Question vs. Answer differences if any) for 1, 50 and 150 times)?

@AlanMunn That is my guess. I wanted some more authority behind that.

@Werner Now looking at the linked question, that is linked as a comment to yours, Jeff Atwood confirms it.

If it holds under the same standard (+5 for upvotes, -2 for downvotes, +2 for accepts for questions; +10 for updates, -2 for downvotes, +15 for accepts for answers), then that's okay.
@AlanMunn Yes, Jeff mentions it as being "in that spirit" (I didn't find that question in my search for similar ones). :-|

Hi, which version/package of LyX is preferred if I have Windows 8?

@Werner I assume that it does; it's unlikely that it would work differently, since that would have required more programming.

8:25 PM
@AlanMunn Exactly, I thought the same.
@TheSubstitute Hmmmm, a better (tongue in cheek) question is "Should I use LyX?"
14
Q: Can I think of LyX as a LaTeX IDE?

pic11Can LyX be used as an IDE for LaTeX? I am considering using LyX instead of Emacs to write my LaTeX papers. Emacs is powerful editor/IDE which helps me be more productive while writing LaTeX. LyX looks like more than an IDE, because it uses its own file format. Is LyX is a good option if the end r...

@TheSubstitute I would assume the latest stable Windows release would work, otherwise there would be lots of "LyX doesn't work with Windows 8" posts around the web. There's aren't many LyX users here, I'm afraid.
(That would be v. 2.0.6)

@AlanMunn: Do you have any cool free iPad apps to suggest me? :)
@Brent: BTW, is Feedly a nice option? I'm thinking of migrating my Liferea stuff to it.

@TheSubstitute See the LyX website.

@PauloCereda I have very limited needs. I like CalenMob for my Google Calendar. I bought a few: Notability (fantastic PDF viewer/note taking app); Textastic (plain text editor); Prompt (terminal app). These last two may have been your recommendations.

@Werner, I did.  "Windows binaries (XP/Vista/7)"

8:39 PM
@TheSubstitute Right, that's the one. Since there are no reports of problems, and that's a very recent release I would assume it would work.

@TheSubstitute Interesting... I don't know what to tell you. What about other software for which there's no immediate Windows 8 release. I would try it (as suggested by @AlanMunn).

Thanks guys. I just installed MikTeX, gonna give it a try.

@TheSubstitute Instead of LyX? Are you new to LaTeX completely?

No, I've used LyX for about a year, but on Vista. LyX is easier for me to use.

@TheSubstitute Ok. Let us know if LyX works on Win 8.

8:46 PM
@AlanMunn Thanks, I'll take a look. :)
