@DavidCarlisle You didn't think to \appto, did you? :P

@egreg An etymology of 'drove' in this context: derive -> vowel reduction -> drive -> drove? Too much of a stretch. So instead draw -> 'w' -> [v] -> 'a' -> [o] -> spelled as pronounced.

@egreg no since the problem was OP using patch commands patching to unknown places I was going to suggest \let\oldquote\quote\def\quote{\oldquote\smaller\em} so you can see what's happening (I also put a useful comment about indentation in the comments since you omitted it from your answer:-)

@AlanMunn Pronounced à la Frau Blucher? /horses neighing in the background

@egreg Ja sicher.

@AlanMunn Showed it to Mara, she wonders if they mean "derive"?

10:07 PM
@Canageek That was my first thought, but then it's not clear how you get to 'drove' from there.

(3:08:35 PM) Mara K: Mishearing
(3:09:20 PM) Mara K: input "derive", analyzed as "drove". Speaker's first language is likely to be Mandarin.

\newenvironment{solution}{\ifdefined\solutionflag}{\fi}
Any hints on why this fails?

@PauloCereda because it can't work

@Canageek Yeah, with a name like Jamal Farokhi seems likely.... :)

@DavidCarlisle hm short circuit?

10:16 PM
@PauloCereda in the false case, \end{solution} will be skipped so the \fi is never seen

@DavidCarlisle ouch, I see. :) Thanks. :)

@PauloCereda \newenvironment{solution}{\ifdefined\solutionflag\else\setbox0\vbox\fi\bgroup}{‌\egroup}

@DavidCarlisle Oh my, I have no idea of what it does!

@PauloCereda the right thing, naturally
(most of the time)

@DavidCarlisle I wub you, thanks. :)

10:23 PM
@PauloCereda put \par before the \egroup if you plan to use that

@DavidCarlisle Thanks. :) I will just mention that to the OP. :)

hhh
I was given a CLS file (no .sty file) and I am getting an error that .sty file missing (pastebin.com/GC50hEwt), I am trying to solve err in trial 2. Ideas?
Is it common practise that Document Class file CLS is given while the Style file STY not?
...
What are required to use Custom Document Class Style? Both STY and CLS files or only CLS file?
I moved this topic to:

Q: Files required for Custom Document Class Style?

hhhI am confused by errors in Trial 2 of this that *.STY file missing while only Document Class file *.CLS file given. So Which files are required to use Custom Document Class Style? *.sty? *.cls? *.layout in Lyx? Other files?

where my confusion lies in the fact that err about missing sty file but that should not be required so I have to create it somehow?

10:50 PM
@hhh there isn't a general answer, class and package files are just input so if you are given a foo.cls and you go \documentclass{foo} if foo.cls has \RequirePackage{wibble} or \includegraphics{zzz} then you need those files too.
@hhh you don't create it, you just get it from where you got the rest of ythe aalto files from or failing that google for it, the first hit for aaltologo.sty at google is wiki.aalto.fi/display/aaltolatex/Aalto+University+logo+package which says it has a copy of the .sty

Do you want this here?

Q: How can I annotate syllable weight and stress in Sharelatex?

Steve RapaportSee the example from Hayes 1995 (Metrical Stress Theory): I don't need to exactly replicate his notation, but I'd like a way in Sharelatex (preferably using the standard compiler) to make a similarly compact and readable one-line analysis of syllable weight and stress. His notation uses one ch...

@Alenanno up to our mods (who are probably asleep:-) but it looks reasonably on topic except it's already self answered so probably not a lot of point now?

@DavidCarlisle It's not really on topic on Linguistics

@Alenanno I don't see any problems with it being here (but not sure it'll pick up any more answers)

@DavidCarlisle Thanks. I migrated it.

@DavidCarlisle Even if treated as a purely latex question? Is it that hard to draw lines over letters?

@Canageek are you saying it isn't on topic, lots of questions here are not "that hard" to answer, it doesn't make them off topic though.

11:20 PM
@DavidCarlisle No, I'm saying I'm surprised you don't think it will get any more answers.
