@lockstep Perhaps you're right.

Do we have experts for preview-LaTeX?

Q: preview-LaTeX: Specific scaling for graphics

JanusI'm using Emacs 23 with AUCTeX/preview-LaTeX for all my LaTeX editing. Mostly I am very happy with this, but I do not like the included graphics previewed in full size. For now my solution is to disable preview for floats and graphics, but what would be really nice would be to get a thumbnail pre...

@PauloCereda I didn't know that either.

I'd be grateful if someone (re)tagged this one:

Q: Preprocess LaTeX file, a latex -E equivalent

MaximeI'm developping a framework for managing LaTeX project's dependencies but I can't figure out if there is a simple way of getting a preprocessed LaTeX file. For instance, if my main.tex looks like : \documentclass{article} ... \newcommand{\specialpath}[0]{../foo/} \input{\specialpath extracomman...

Yay Sunday!

@PauloCereda Blog post looks okay

@JosephWright Thanks! Stefan suggested me some minor aesthetic fixes, I'll work on them, then publish. :)

12:46 PM
@PauloCereda Great, nice to read that!

@StefanKottwitz Thanks for the suggestions. I'm a newbie on blogs. :P

So I have some time more to polish my post :-)

hehe that post will be epic. :)

@JosephWright I extended my post, it's nearly complete I think

@StefanKottwitz What will it be about?

12:59 PM
@lockstep: do you have any suggestions for our next interviewee? :)

@PauloCereda Besides Stefan? Basically any trusted user that wasn't already interviewed by TUG. Perhaps @MartinScharrer, our current no. 1.

@lockstep Great idea! I'll invite Martin.

@lockstep It's about why TeX.SX is a great place for package authors and maintainers. If you would like, you could get an account on the blog for reading it (and writing later).

@StefanKottwitz Yes, I'd like to. Can you manage it?

1:14 PM
@lockstep @JosephWright could, I don't have access to user management on the blog.

@StefanKottwitz Give me 10 minutes: lunch at the moment

1:28 PM
@lockstep You should now have an invite
@StefanKottwitz I've set you to 'Admin': it seems sensible that the mods on the main site are all admin users on the blog

@JosephWright Already logged in. Thanks!

@JosephWright thanks!

1:46 PM
Yay, Martin is here!
@MartinScharrer: would you like to be our next interviewee?

@PauloCereda: Interview for the TeX.SX blog? Ok, as long I don't have to give autographs ;-)

@MartinScharrer you will, after the interview. :)

2:04 PM
Should this question be migrated to superuser.com, based on the OP's request in the last comment?

Q: Indentation in AUCTEX and algorithmic package

DrorWhen working with EMACS+AUCTEX I encountered the problem of proper indentation when using the algorithmic package. In this MWE: \documentclass[12pt]{article} \usepackage{algorithmic} \begin{document} \begin{algorithmic} \IF {list.first $\neq x_{min}$} \STATE bla \STATE bla 2 \ENDIF \...

@lockstep Experience suggests that there will be no more answers there than here, so migration might be considered a bit of a waste of time

@JosephWright Okay, good to know.

@lockstep I can ask in the mod room, probably later (when the US people are more likely to be around)
The SU mods may have a view

2:26 PM
Quick tag merging suggestion: Could we add a new tag and make (7 questions) and (9 questions) synonyms of the new tag?
(4 questions feature both tags at the moment.)

@lockstep Sounds okay to me - anyone else?

@lockstep I like the idea too.

I think the two concepts are very closely related.

2 hours later…
4:20 PM
Anyone know of a question about setting up WinEdt to use SumatraPDF for SyncTeX: I'm sure we've had one, but can't find it.

4:31 PM
@JosephWright Maybe is it the same for TeXnicCenter?
Let me check mine.

@PauloCereda Could be

@JosephWright Oh mine is not set, but I found a reference about it: wiki.bath.ac.uk/display/latextricks/…
I think it might be the same for WinEdt
Could not find a proper question.

@PauloCereda I'll have to test it. If there is no question on the site, perhaps I should ask :-)

@JosephWright It's a nice reference for us to have. You need to use Google-fu to reach some of those obscure references. :)

Can't remember anyone about WinEdt, though there have been questions about other editors. Another reference: robjhyndman.com/researchtips/synchronizing-winedt-and-pdf-files

4:43 PM
@TorbjørnT Great
OK, I will test out then ask the question perhaps later today

Is this really on topic? It seems to me like a Sweave related problem
0
Q: RSweaveLaTeX in For -loop not working but without for -loop working with Arima -analysis?

hhhI want to stress I cannot understand why this part in the code below does not result in many arima results for(i in 1:ncol(f)) { arima(na.omit(f[,i])); } but this does arima(na.omit(f[,1])); arima(na.omit(f[,2])); arima(na.omit(f[,3])); arima(na.omit(f[,4])); This is something very uni...

@egreg: Juve won yay!

@egreg I'd say off-topic.

Warning: the OP will stress. :P

@PauloCereda :) :) :)

5:18 PM
I recently became a member of the sister site spanish.stackexchange.com (now on public beta). I would like to propose there something similar to our meta.tex.stackexchange.com/q/430/3954. Would it be OK (to TeX.sx community) if I borrow some of the blocks here to be used in spanixh.sx? Should I ask this on meta?

@GonzaloMedina Seems fine to me: what is there to object to?
Turns out WinEdt 6 makes SyncTeX trivially easy, at least with MiKTeX.
There's a tick-box to turn it on :-)

@JosephWright I don't know. Just wanted to be sure :-)

@GonzaloMedina: I wanna vote you for moderator there. :)

5:33 PM
@PauloCereda You'll have to wait a while: pro tem first, surely

@JosephWright Ah.

@JosephWright you're right.
@PauloCereda I've nominated myself to be a Moderator Pro-Tem over there ;-)

I'm reading the Bugzilla entry for LibreOffice and Java 7. One user wrote the following: "I thought LibreOffice devs were trying to get rid of any dependence on java anyway. Perhaps moving to python instead?" Yes, go for it! Python 2.5/2.6/2.7/3.0/3.1/3.2, everything is so easy. [:set sarcasmmode on]
@GonzaloMedina Cool! You will surely be a great mod! :)
Sorry, I can resist. Another pearl: "I have uninstalled LO today and installed Microsoft Office 2010; it works fine with Java 1.7 - in fact it works fine even without JRE."

5:55 PM
Could someone send me a screenshot of a terminal window with the menu entries in English?

@PauloCereda Check your e-mail.

@AlanMunn Thanks a million Alan! :)

6:15 PM
@AlanMunn: I'll nominate you as a moderator for English.sx too. :P

6:33 PM
@GonzaloMedina it's cc-wiki, so you could do it without asking, I guess it's fine if you link to the original post, also it belongs to the network

7:09 PM
@StefanKottwitz: I corrected my blog post. Could you take a look on it? :)

@StefanKottwitz Thanks, Stefan.

Q: Finding TeX Sources in C

DotNetStudentWhy is it so hard to find TeX sources in C? I know the full source code is included in the tex.web and pdftex.web files, but isn't there any way to convert them to plain C code?

Too localized?
or duplicated.
I remember a similar question / answer.

7:42 PM
@PauloCereda The images are better now :-) the last image is especially sharp and readable

@StefanKottwitz Mac power! :) And less smileys too. :)

Ehm. :)

@egreg: rep cap! :)

@egreg And Legendary. :-)

@PauloCereda Look more closely. :)

7:57 PM
@egreg OMG!!!!!1
Congrats!!!!!!!!!
@StefanKottwitz: Is it ok to publish now?

8:13 PM
@PauloCereda I'd like to buy a beer to all chat room members, but a cyberbeer is not as good as a real one.

@egreg LOL
@egreg: Great achievement! I was expecting to see the Legendary badge tomorrow. :)

@PauloCereda I too, but apparently the count lists only the past days, so today was the day, as soon as 200 was reached. :))))

@egreg Ah! :D
@egreg: what will be the next project?

@egreg: Congratulation. You have earned this right.

@MarcoDaniel And you have hit 10k - Congratulations, and delve into the mod tools! :-)

8:28 PM
@lockstep Thanks. I am little bit proud ;-)

@MarcoDaniel: congrats!

@egreg @MarcoDaniel Congratulation!

Oh wait, that means I owe @Marco my credit card number too.

There are now 15 trusted users plus 8 more with access to the mod tools.

@lockstep I'll enter 2012 in total bankrupcy. :)

8:36 PM
@PauloCereda looks good for being published! I missed a link for rubber, but noticed that the link at the top was just hard to see because of the code markup.

@StefanKottwitz Great, I'll publish it. :) Sorry, I usually hide links. :)
@Stefan: BTW I renamed the "birthday celebrations - interviews" chatroom to "TeXtalk - interviews". Could you unfreeze it? chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/info/1728/…

@PauloCereda done

@StefanKottwitz Danke! :)

@MarcoDaniel Congratulations!

9:00 PM
@MarcoDaniel Congrats from me too!
@egreg Thanks for the \par discussion.

Thanks for the congrats. Nice to be here.

@MarcoDaniel It is a nice and civilized group. Very unlike the main site.
@PauloCereda @egreg Today I hit a score of 22,222 and then somebody upvoted and spoilt it that makes it about a 0.2 on the egreg scale:)

@YiannisLazarides Yay! :)

@PauloCereda Yup! Long way to get to 0.9egreg on my estimation, I will be 90 by then:)

@YiannisLazarides I too was a bit surprised that TeX finishes the paragraph without inserting \par as it does in all the other cases. Maybe Knuth had some application in mind or it's just an oversight.

9:11 PM
@egreg Surely Knuth was thinking of something. Sometime back I went through all the Pascal code, with the exception of the gotos everything was well planned.
@egreg I think within the vbox the "par" was not showing in my example, due to grouping. Similar to if you end up the paragraph with {\par}, it will restore previous values.

@YiannisLazarides No, you redefine \par outside the \vbox, so the definition inside is the same as outside. When you do {\par}, \hangindent, \hangafterand \parshape are restored inside the group, so the restoration is forgotten. But your redefined \par doesn't redefine itself. Try \let\par\relax\vbox{a\show\par}: TeX will say that \par is \relax (but it will terminate the paragraph and the vbox will be as wide as \hsize).

@egreg Yes! You are right. Normally if you let \par to \relax it will just hang, why doesn't it do it with the vbox?

@MarcoDaniel @egreg Big Congrats! As the wise StackExchange designers once put it wisely "They’re something of an accomplishment!", indeed they are!

9:26 PM
I'm not sure if people like my YouTube references. :P

@egreg Not to worry I figured it out, is the \unskip\penalty10000\hskip\parfillskip\penalty-10000 story.

@YiannisLazarides TeXbook, p. 100.

Next blog post: "Here we have the TeXbook. We all know TeX is a typesetting system designed by Donald Knuth. We can produce beautiful documents... but will it blend?" /me gets an industrial blender, puts the TeXbook inside and turn it on. Then the following phrase appears, "YES IT BLENDS!"
Then I get a copyright issue.

@PauloCereda Heresy! You will be TeXcommunicated. :)

@egreg (slow motion) noooooooooooo!

9:32 PM
@PauloCereda I think the beauty of TeX is that it is like sudoku :) That's what should come out of a blending machine:) or maybe a crossword puzzle with uncial fonts!

@YiannisLazarides OMG that would be awesome!!!

10:01 PM
I turned my "quick tag merging suggestion" into a proper meta question:
0
Q: Create {forward-inverse-search} and make {forward-search} and {inverse-search} synonyms of it

lockstepThe concepts of forward-search and inverse-search are very closely related. Therefore I suggest to create a new forward-inverse-search tag, make forward-search (7 questions) and inverse-search (9 questions) synonyms of the new tag and merge the existing questions. (Note: 4 questions feature both ...

10:43 PM
Cool, I found how to add xelatex support for rubber. :)

@PauloCereda You should update the blog article!

@egreg Good idea!

10:59 PM
@egreg: done. :)

@PauloCereda XeTeX and LuaTeX are around since some years: it would be nice if rubber realizes this. From the code it doesn't seem so difficult.

Oh boy .. I asked my first question at meta.stackoverflow and promptly received a downvote ...
-1
Q: The "total rep" line of the reputation audit features incorrect colons/braces

lockstepFrom my reputation audit for tex.sx: ** rep today: 262 ** rep this week (2011-12-04 - 2011-12-10): 262 ** rep this month (2011-12-01 - 2011-12-31): 752 ** rep this quarter (2011-10-01 - 2011-12-31): 8113 ** rep this year (2011-01-01 - 2011-12-31): 31462 ** rep from bonuses: 100 ** total rep 3907...

@egreg Agreed! The author of the patch said in the tracker, "I've submitted this patch ages ago to the upstream maintainer, but have never received any response."
@lockstep Oh my! It's really dangerous outside TeX land.
All bow before @MartinScharrer and @egreg, the legendary users! we are not worthy, we are not worthy.

11:17 PM
@PauloCereda Thanks :-)
@egreg: Congratulations!
At least I'm not alone any longer ;-)

@PauloCereda Remember that you're TeXcommunicated; as reparation you have to solve 2^4 exercises of the TeXbook, without peeking at the solution, of course.

@egreg Please please please pretty please. I'll behave. :)

@MartinScharrer Non so many days after you. Prepare to the overtake. :)

@MartinScharrer: the interviews room is now open. When you have time, we'd like to interview you. :)

@PauloCereda Sorry, not tonight.

11:24 PM
@MartinScharrer Don't worry. :)

I'm calling it a night.

@PauloCereda Do you know about the story of emperor Henry IV and pope Gregory VII? The emperor had been excommunicated, so he went to the Pope who was at the Canossa castle and stayed for some days kneeling on the snow to get pardoned? I remember well their names. Guess why. :)

@egreg Ah I didn't know! :) I only know "kneel on corn", it's a common expression here. :) But I won't need to do that, will I? :) Henry Gregory is cool! It's like Victor Borge said about Giuseppe Verdi: "The next opera is by Giuseppe Verdi. Joe Green to you." :)

Yes, yes, @egreg the TeX pope ...

11:40 PM
@PauloCereda Here we use "kneel on chick-peas"
@MartinScharrer And emperor at the same time. :)

This one may be interesting for tex.sx:

Q: Should "literal duplicate" questions (created by migration) be deleted or just closed?

lockstepNow and then, a questioner will be given the advice in comments that his/her question would be more appropriate at another SE site (say, a question about LaTeX would fare better at tex.sx than at stackoverflow). Sometimes, the questioner will then proceed to ask a carbon copy of the same questio...

@egreg Really? Cool! I love how chickpeas are called in Portuguese: "grão de bico"

@PauloCereda In Italian "ceci". In Genoa they do a kind of flat bread with chick-pea flour: "farinata di ceci". it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farinata_di_ceci

@egreg It looks so yummy! :)

@lockstep I remember a couple of those cases, I believe they've been deleted.

11:53 PM
@egreg I flagged some of them and they were deleted. IIRC, others were just closed, though.

Congratulations to @egreg and @MarcoDaniel!

My poor credit card number. :P

@PauloCereda Don't forget the regular "focaccia genovese" (flat bread made with wheat flour and olive oil), but also another speciality of Liguria: the "focaccia al formaggio di Recco"
@GonzaloMedina Thanks!
