For users of emacs: I found a neat package today to pull in BibTeX citations off the web: github.com/cute-jumper/gscholar-bibtex

@JosephWright can we delete {latex-project} is about LaTeX in general and from the excerpt and add some text to the main bit referencing latex-project.org ?

8:34 AM
@DavidCarlisle But it is about very general questions for LaTeX

@JosephWright it shouldn't be called that then

Q: Rename the {latex-general} tag to {latex-project}?

Martin ScharrerThis is a follow-up discussion to What to do with the 'latex' tag?. New users keep trying to tag their normal LaTeX questions with latex and auto-completion of the tag input element will make that into latex-general. Maybe renaming it to latex-project like suggested somewhere already might help ...

@DavidCarlisle The name was deliberately chosen to avoid new users tagging everything

@JosephWright hmm so now they tag everything latex-project and 9 times out of ten that then gets removed

@DavidCarlisle To some extent

@JosephWright just came up (again) this morning as I was just thinking of doing a tag edit to remove that (from a gantt chart question) when the tag vanished as someone beat me to it:-)

8:47 AM
@DavidCarlisle The issue of the tag goes back to the start of the site: we want to have some way of covering general LaTeX issues but not have (almost) everything tagged

@JosephWright well I think we should reserve the latex-project tag for latex project work, can't really expect users to understand why they can't go to latex-project.org to get miktex, or report bugs in pgf if "latex project" is being used as a synonym for "anything about latex"

@DavidCarlisle I think this one needs a meta post :-)

@JosephWright I'd have to ask @egreg how to ask a question
@JosephWright Actually I'll reply to the earlier question so the older context and discussion is to hand.

@DavidCarlisle OK
@DavidCarlisle Once you have, I might feature the question so it gets some views

Good maen

9:03 AM
@JosephWright @DavidCarlisle The newest latex-project question:

Q: Problem in indenting Multiple Line items in Latex

user3518014These are files I am using to make my Resume. http://pastebin.com/U9bF6iLB http://pastebin.com/TXrK2r7E I want to shift the indent of items -3pt left. But when do that only the 1st line is shifted. The next lines follow the default indentation. I tried to search for some solution but they sugges...

@JosephWright done
@Johannes_B retag it to

@DavidCarlisle Just had another look at that resume template questin from above and found that ^^^^^

It is quite interesting to see how much Josephs are moderators throughout the SE universe. :)

@Johannes_B res.cls? I think I have something about that, IIRC.

@Johannes_B Yes, I had!

A: Problem using etaremune (reversing the labels of items in a list)

egregThe class res.cls issues \nofiles, which means that etaremune can't write off the last value in the .aux file. Either remove the \nofiles from res.cls or call it as \let\latexnofiles\nofiles \let\nofiles\relax \documentclass[margin,line]{res} and use \latexnofiles if you ever need it in such ...

@egreg You can answer the current one if you want, i vtc as unclear. tex.stackexchange.com/questions/274717/…

@Johannes_B It can remain closed, unless the OP edits it.

@ChristianHupfer quack! :)

Quackadoodle

@Johannes_B :)

12:52 PM
@PauloCereda....pssssh ... I am improving my old dissertation ;-)

@ChristianHupfer :)

@UlrikeFischer You are the MikTeX expert, any hints? latex-community.org/forum/… Thanks

@Johannes_B I would say there's an antivirus or other tool pestering the installer.

@Johannes_B I think there was a bug in texworks which looked some files and so prevented on-the-fly installation. Closing everything and then compiling on the command line should work. An update should solve the problem too but one should read the section about "critical updates" first: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/108447/…
@Johannes_B Actually there seems to be an open bug with texworks: sourceforge.net/p/miktex/bugs/2394

@UlrikeFischer latex-community.org/forum/… Thanks :-)

1:30 PM
We have biblatex-examples, do we have one available just for BibTeX that is usable in a normal MWE?

@Johannes_B You can use biblatex-examples with bibtex too. See e.g. tex.stackexchange.com/questions/276320/…

@UlrikeFischer Yes i know, but the date isn't recognized.

@Johannes_B There are some entries which uses year.

@UlrikeFischer Just noticed. Somehow, i always had test entries that used date. I am a bit ashamed that i missed that.
@UlrikeFischer I bet you have seen the very very basic question of how to create a list of figures on texwelt. Thoughts?

1:54 PM
@Johannes_B saputellos answer is too long and the documents created by the code too. Beside this: googling for abbildungsverzeichnis latex gives 15.000 hits, and every introduction mentions it. So I would simply add a link to some question about basic documentation and tell people to read it.

@UlrikeFischer The people don't read any documentation anymore it seems.
@UlrikeFischer I am thinking of a project that explains the different steps to write a thesis, including some of the often required but stupid things supervisors want. Instead of giving the infomration right a spot, a link is provided. Somehow a guided set of useful links that doesn't just hit the user in the face.

@Johannes_B That is their problem, and you can't solve it by creating more documentation in the disguise of answers.

@UlrikeFischer Ah you are right, that would be another piece of information littered somewhere. Argh, violating my own point.

@JosephWright Do you wanna take this one? latex-community.org/forum/…

@Johannes_B I guess so: if the user knows how to get one thing from CTAN, why not other things

@JosephWright :-)

@PauloCereda hmmm
@PauloCereda who's been taking pictures?

3:09 PM
@DavidCarlisle You and the L3 team are displayed in the TUGboat. :)

@PauloCereda You didn't grab the full version: should I?

@JosephWright I got both. :) The full (digital) version also includes the photos. :)

@PauloCereda Indeed

@JosephWright Page 79, look what you all did to poor Paul. :)

@PauloCereda Yes, I'd seen that

@ChristianHupfer just another 50000 to reach 99999!

@DavidCarlisle Piece of cake ;-)

@PauloCereda I suspect this was at a Biergarten in Darmstadt (and a beer was in front of the bloke).

@egreg ooh a secret information. :)

@egreg Looks like it: the place with the rhubarb drink

@JosephWright I had a beer. Maybe two. ;-)

Q: completely blank console

BrianI've now reinstalled LaTeX several times on my Mac after upgrading to the El Capitan OS. I read the document on how to change directories and everything seems to be in the proper place. Except when I try to compile a document, I get a completely blank console. No error messages, nothing. Just...

@DavidCarlisle Yes, yes
@DavidCarlisle So back to or ...?

@JosephWright we should have an tag, would be even easier than to pick up a gold badge.
6

@DavidCarlisle :-)
@DavidCarlisle Luckily I'm stuck with Mavericks (10.9) for VPN reasons

@JosephWright or yes or something that suggests it is only for cases with nothing better unspecific-latex or some such

@DavidCarlisle ?

4:14 PM
@JosephWright sounds good to me

@DavidCarlisle I guess needs some retagging effort to separate out (1) as you'd like it (2) other better tags and (3) the small number of cases where there's nothing better than

4:37 PM
@lockstep You are the tag expert: thoughts on the above?

@JosephWright Sounds good to me too.
@barbarabeeton From more than a year ago :-) latex-community.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=85369#p85369

@JosephWright can you rename latex-project to latex-misc without bumping them all to the top page then we could manually go through those and re-tag to something more appropriate of needed?

@DavidCarlisle No

@JosephWright not the most flexible of systems we live in:(

@DavidCarlisle Can I then get a "miktex-update" tag? ;-)

4:42 PM
@DavidCarlisle Well, 'probably no': that would mean removing the tag entirely, which I don't think is the aim
@UlrikeFischer Good plan :-)
@DavidCarlisle By-design: the Powers don't want 'silent' edits as all sorts could get through

@UlrikeFischer as long as you promise to answer all the el capitan ones as well, yes.

@DavidCarlisle Perhaps I can do a tag merge then reverse it
@DavidCarlisle I think I can pull off some mod trickery :-)

@JosephWright OK. seems there are 206, could be worse I suppose.

4:59 PM
@JosephWright While we're at it, can i get buggy-template tag? :-p
@JosephWright should that one reported to the powers? helptouser.com/texlatex/…

@Johannes_B Yes

@JosephWright tbh, i don't know how to do that. Can you do it?

@Johannes_B OK

There is a word missing, right? should that one be reported to the powers
@JosephWright Thanks

Unless you are using Windows, a little sed and/or awk seems a whole lot easier. (If you are using Windows, my sympathies.) — cfr 17 hours ago

@SeanAllred don't all windows users have sed and awk?:-)

@cfr My dislike for Windows is growing by the day.
@DavidCarlisle You mock me

@SeanAllred LOLOLOLOL

@SeanAllred I use sed on windows most days:-)

@DavidCarlisle Cygwin. :)

5:27 PM
Side effect of discussing on meta: even more points for me from Stefan's Grandma.
@PauloCereda Well naturally you need a window system if you are on windows, so cygwin X-windows seems the natural choice.

@DavidCarlisle :)

6:25 PM
@SeanAllred Mine can't grow, having been at its maximum for the last 30 years. I checked: Windoze 1 was shipped on 20 November 1985. ;-)

@egreg thirty years of hell

@SeanAllred for developers yes, for users less so, and there are more users than developers, typically:-)

@SeanAllred Why? I have never used it. ;-)

@DavidCarlisle I have no problem with window systems; I have a problem with Windows' excuse for one

@SeanAllred As I say you need some platform to run X-windows on, so MSWindows will do. But when I had linux machines at home they were hardly friendly and getting any window system at all required lots of internet searching and downloading dubious reverse engineered graphics drivers. things are better now but it took years to catch up.

6:38 PM
@DavidCarlisle I can appreciate what Windows did for the personal part of the PC industry while maintaining my gripes :)

@DavidCarlisle ssh -X
:)

I, on the other hand, while relatively new to the site, find people trying to ask basic questions about latex tagging them as tex-core, which is utterly wrong. Given that there is already a latex-kernel tag (appropriately, for the kernel), is it possible to assign a tag called "latex-core" or "latex-base", meaning the kernel plus base and required classes and packages? — erreka 2 mins ago

7:03 PM
@DavidCarlisle The graphics drivers are still dubious.
I wish someone would produce graphics cards with decent free software support.

7:25 PM
@yo' I just found some interesting (hopefully) read in form of a bachelor report of the university in Brno.
\thesissetup{
  title = The Form of Theses Written in LaTeX,
  TeXtitle = The Form of Theses\\ Written in \LaTeX{},

  keywords = {latex document classes, thesis typesetting,
    fithesis, tex usage statistics},
  TeXkeywords = {\LaTeX\ document classes, thesis typesetting,
    \textsf{fithesis}, \TeX\ usage statistics},
  basePath    = ./fithesis3/fithesis,
  assignment  = {./misc/assignment, ./misc/declaration}}

7:47 PM
@Johannes_B Promising, but the preamble in the document is a mess

@egreg :-)

I'm in the concert hall waiting for Beethoven's 4th and 3rd symphonies. Orchestra about to enter :)

@egreg stop being anti-social and turn your phone off!

@DavidCarlisle :-D

8:07 PM
@FaheemMitha -- and i wish someone would produce graphics cards with a decent (quite high) resolution for a decently large monitor (two full output pages, side by side, actual size, plus a little slop at the sides) at a price that my employer would be willing to pay.

@barbarabeeton And how much is that? :-)
@egreg Which concert hall?

@FaheemMitha -- not sure (it's hard to get actual numbers out of them), but the monitor itself has to be under $1000. i've got a large enough screen, but it's a hand-me-down from some more privileged user who got something even better, it's old, the "good" graphics card fried because it was a half-height card (the chassis into which it was placed would only support a full-height card so it kept shorting), and they no longer make cards to support the monitor i have. so i live with oversized fuzz.

@barbarabeeton I remember talking about this earlier. Your employees really seem appallingly cheap.

@FaheemMitha -- partly, but a more important criterion is that they want every workstation on every desk to be exactly the same. and that isn't realistic!

8:24 PM
@barbarabeeton I agree, it's not realistic.
I use an Nvidia graphics card. I wish I didn't.

@barbarabeeton My home town, city orchestra. Fourth symphony was very good.

@ChristianHupfer How long can you watch the video? youtube.com/watch?v=f6XagVEIqOY

@barbarabeeton www.opvorchestra.it

@egreg -- ah, you're on the interval. hope the third is just as good.

@barbarabeeton Gérard Korsten conducting. I like him.

8:37 PM
Shouldn't they play the third before the fourth?

@FaheemMitha The third is too emotional

@egreg So?

@FaheemMitha You can't play anything after it

@egreg Ah. It's been a while since I have listened to the Third.

@egreg -- it appears that your home-town orchestra doesn't have a permanent conductor. but their programming appears interesting. i'm terribly fond of the eroica symphony, and i don't blame beethoven one bit for retracting the dedication to napoleon. (i know you won't approve, but my favorite pianist has liszt's piano transcriptions of beethoven's symphonies in his repertoire. last i heard, he was working on the third and seventh. i'm waiting eagerly ...)

9:00 PM
I can't imagine why anyone would dedicate anything to Napoleon. The creep.

1 hour later…
10:18 PM
@barbarabeeton No permanent conductor for several years, after Peter Maag. But guest conductors seem to be happy to come. Unfortunately, this year's program is not really along my tastes.

@egreg -- ah, the 1827 "witching year". but i did spot some bach and mozart. (and it seems from korsten's bio that he indulges in later repertoire, so i guess you're just fortunate this time.)

@barbarabeeton :)

10:37 PM
@egreg You seriously don't consider any composers after 1827? How about Sibelius?

@FaheemMitha Did he ever write music? ;-)

@egreg Yes, he did. Some of it is very good.

@FaheemMitha Sorry, but I disagree: I think he's one of the worst composers of all times.
@FaheemMitha Of course Stravinsky is much worse.

@egreg Seriously? Ok, fair enough.
@egreg I don't know Stravinsky's music.

@FaheemMitha Better for you!

10:49 PM
Good maen

@egreg What music of Sibelius have you listened to? Just curious.
Hi @Christian. How are you?

@FaheemMitha Fine! How about you?

@ChristianHupfer I'm Ok, thanks.

@FaheemMitha I think something like “The swan of Tuonela” or a ludicrous “Serenade for strings” or how it's called. Also the Karelia suite, IIRC. Unbearable.

@FaheemMitha Sounds good....

10:55 PM
@egreg The symphonies are quite good. Though I like the Swan too. Of course, tastes differ. Some people like rap, for example. Also, Hindi film music.

@FaheemMitha: Apparently you are talking to @egreg, the only one here being older than the music your talking about :-P

@ChristianHupfer Everybody knows I was at the premiere of the Third Symphony. :P

@ChristianHupfer Well, yes, I'm talking to egreg. Who apparently has standards in music.

@ChristianHupfer Unfortunately I couldn't manage to be in Leipzig for Easter in 1727, but I was in 1729.

@FaheemMitha boooh!

10:59 PM
@ChristianHupfer Boo?
@egreg Are you a time traveller? And if so, could I borrow your machine?

@FaheemMitha You're indicating that someone else not listening to egreg's music has no standard? Booooh! :-P

@FaheemMitha -- stravinsky wrote music for some marvelous ballets. and "l'histoire du soldat" is very compelling. (@egreg and i, i think, have agreed to disagree on taste in music.)

@FaheemMitha Well, everybody is saying I'm old.

@egreg there is a reason for that

@ChristianHupfer No, that was not implied. I just said egreg has standards. Which is a good thing.

11:01 PM
@egreg Did you meet Bach there?

@FaheemMitha I think "prejudice" is the word you mean, not "standard" :-)

@egreg -- "everybody" just happens to include you.

@egreg Not me.
@barbarabeeton Nothing wrong with having different tastes in music.

@ChristianHupfer On Good Friday 1727 there was the first performance of the Matthäuspassion, you should know.

@DavidCarlisle If he's listened to those composers it's not prejudice.

11:03 PM
@egreg Well, a Good Friday is the right day then for such an event

@FaheemMitha it's all the ones after that that he refuses to listen to

@DavidCarlisle No, I meant if he's listened to Sibelius and Stravinsky, for example, and doesn't like them, then it is not prejudice wrt Sibelius and Stravinsky, at any rate.
Prejudics means you haven't tried it out. As far as I know.
Prejudics -> Prejudice, sorry.
Personally, I think Sibelius is great. Though he didn't write much music.

@FaheemMitha keyboard typos are acceptable here (defending @egreg isn't:-)
2

@DavidCarlisle LOL.

@DavidCarlisle Who's being mean to whom?

11:13 PM
@egreg me to you of course
main site down?

@DavidCarlisle So it seems
