1:55 AM
-@JosephWright classified some questions on meta.tex.stackexchange.com/a/6384/1090 ...

5 hours later…
6:40 AM
@DavidCarlisle Great

7:11 AM
@DavidCarlisle Looks like you've got the votes for this: I guess I'll make a start on the retagging today (and alter the wiki entries)

7:47 AM
@PauloCereda Do you know anything about arara? Could you take a look at tex.stackexchange.com/questions/276866/…

7:58 AM
@TorbjørnT. :-)

8:39 AM
Greetings
Why in a document latex after a while the limit appears like below
I mean there is an weird "i" with a missing point. What is the cause of that?

Q: Why should lines be avoided in tables?

Vince42I read some books about typography and design some years ago. They all recommended to avoid lines in tables, instead they recommended to make use of spacing. I found that reasonable and adhered henceforth to those rules. Recently I ran into many discussions with spreadsheet users, who doubted th...

A: Conflict with limit , font, babel

ManuelSpanish babel offers a switch to have accented or unnacented operators (lim/lím, max/máx, min/mín, inf/ínf, mod/mód, etc.). It seems to work with the switch \unaccentedoperators In any case, I would wait for another answer because this just removes the addition made by babel leaving the origin...

@Johannes_B Awesome!!!!! Tons of thanks!!!! :-)

9:18 AM
@JosephWright I'm happy to do some (unless you have special powers) how would we split it up not to conflict each other?

@DavidCarlisle I'm working through the list you did on meta: so far I've got to tex.stackexchange.com/questions/251941/…
@DavidCarlisle Not sure about versus (I could add a synonym)
@StefanKottwitz Got my copy of your new book :-)
TUGboat to read too

@JosephWright just saw/replied to that comment, I'd leave it for now, or make it a synonym

Need to get a replacement copy of @NicolaTalbot's first book (I lent it to someone ...)

@JosephWright I could start from the other end?

@DavidCarlisle OK
@DavidCarlisle Agreed: I'll make a synonym and flip round (that doesn't show as an edit)

9:38 AM
@DavidCarlisle, @Johannes_B Looks like you two are dealing with the tagging: I can stick to reading TUGboat :-)

@JosephWright :-) Not sure what to tag that one though tex.stackexchange.com/questions/51138/…

@Chris'ssistheartist That seems due to having \usepackage[spanish]{babel}

@egreg Yeah, true.

@egreg Did you enjoy Petr's article in TUGboat (and his comments re: LaTeX)?

@JosephWright Not yet received it

9:41 AM
@egreg Ah
@egreg They'd made it across the Atlantic so I'd assumed everyone in Europe had got theirs

@TorbjørnT. I will take a look, thanks. :)

@JosephWright Well, I'd ask him to implement the code for bytefield, for instance. Or for preparing multiple indices, glossaries, bibliographies.

@egreg He'd do that, though, for each case as required (from I guess a store of code snippets)

@JosephWright Yes: probably slightly different solutions for each multiple bibliography case.

@egreg Exactly
@DavidCarlisle did you see TUGboat?
@egreg One for you: github.com/latex3/latex3/commit/… :-)

9:50 AM
@JosephWright Lucky man! I did not get one yet.
But I got the TUGboat too.

@StefanKottwitz Well they are physically printed in the UK so that might help

Q: Is it still worth it to learn TeX?

JohnJamesSmithI think I've reached the stage to where I can't get any better at producing documents that look the way I want them to unless I put serious effort into learning how to write the kind of as-of-now-to-me-completely-opaque code littered with @ symbols and all manner of unfamiliar low-level commands ...

@JosephWright How is the image print quality?

@JosephWright it arrived, not looked yet (apart from the pics, which Paulo had warned about)

@StefanKottwitz Much improved over the previous book

9:53 AM
@JosephWright This time I insisted a lot, and again delivered all images in PDF (except the cute dog photos which were bitmaps anyway)

@StefanKottwitz Ah, just found said dog

@JosephWright I just discovered the tex-general tag.

10:06 AM
Sems like @David passed by me in the list.

@Johannes_B was thinking the same:-) does that mean we are done? did you start from the start?

@DavidCarlisle I was starting right at the end, but you were there. I thought @Joseph might start at the beginning; so i started on the top of what was page 3
@DavidCarlisle I skipped a few where i was unsure.

@Johannes_B ah that explains why there are some left OK, I''ll do a few more then:-)

@DavidCarlisle Probably page two is untouched yet.

@StefanKottwitz Publisher should read your advice about tables :-)

10:10 AM
@DavidCarlisle Note: I sorted by date.

@JosephWright That's really paranoid! :)
I see that @DavidCarlisle is in retagging frenzy.

@PauloCereda Rayman update: 694 teensies saved
@egreg Bruno's idea, really

@JosephWright ooooooooh that's great news! :)
@JosephWright: I just beat Super Mario 3D World yesterday, but I don't think there are many Wii U players here. :)
@DavidCarlisle: all birds were found? :)
I was going to write a crawler to ease the work of finding them, but then I had to write another chapter in my thesis. Bah. :)

Good maen

10:22 AM
@ChristianHupfer Quack! :)

@PauloCereda: I've got a Wii U ... but no Super Mario :-(

@ChristianHupfer ooooh
@ChristianHupfer which games to you have?

@PauloCereda Need for speed ... yet in the hull :D and The Force unleashed ... \the\numberofgames is \lim ited ;-)

@ChristianHupfer :)

Yeah, 666 days -- devilish :D

10:26 AM
I have a few games for the Wii U as well. Mostly because Nintendo is a stupid company who shutdown activities in Brazil, so I have no eShop available neither an official game distributor.

Off - topic, in my point of view:

Q: how to give shift enter in latex as in microsoft office word

Prasadin few cases i need shift enter to move the word to next line in MS word by giving shift enter that word moves to next line how to do in latex?

@PauloCereda: Amazon?

Q: why latex templates downloaded from latextemplates.com not working in my tex editor?

amitozI downloaded templates from latextemplates.com and opened them in texeditor and kile and while compiling it gives so many errors but I am able to compile them online on share latex website.Can anyone help?

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

@ChristianHupfer Also unclear

@ChristianHupfer Imported stuff.

@Johannes_B Answer it: Because templates suck and you screw up the system ;-)

10:29 AM
@Joseph, @Christian: trivia: video games are tagged as gambling in Brazil, so there is a huge tax applied to them.

@PauloCereda Ah, I forgot: There was Lego City Undercover as game bundled with the Wii U :D

@ChristianHupfer Everything is awesooooooome!

@PauloCereda The chicken slide is quite funny :D

@ChristianHupfer On a sidenote: Wrote two mails yesterday and asked if they can remove the link to the horrible template from the garden. They did :-)

@Johannes_B Censorship :D

10:31 AM
@PauloCereda one person (claiming to be 5 but wrote very good email) found 4, i left a big hint so hopefully will find the last one:-)

@DavidCarlisle ooh what will the prize be? :)
I stopped believing in Santa Claus when I was six. Mother took me to
see him in a department store and he asked for my autograph.

^^ LOL

@PauloCereda it's a secret but if you can crack this code you may be able to work it out: 10 pound voucher book

By the way: The next buggy package by me:

@DavidCarlisle ooh :)

10:50 AM
what's the best way to write a U for the universal set?
I have : \usepackage{tipa} and \textscu from dextrify, not sure if theres something thats baked in though

@baxx A small caps U?

@egreg hmm ok , what's that written as?
detrify just suggested \usepackage{dsfont} and \mathds{U}
although that didn't compile I don't have the font or something

@baxx Can you point to a source with an image? I've seen several ways for denoting the universal class.
@baxx Maybe you're asking for \mathbb{U}? (Requires amssymb)

@egreg i'll try that now thanks
@egreg yeah i think that'll work thanks - looks in the same style as N, Z, R and what not, which I'm guessing is alright?

11:06 AM
@Johannes_B ? you mean the hashtag suggestion, it is what it is:-)

@DavidCarlisle That might get people confused once more if things are tagged #latexproject :-)

@baxx I'd never use \mathbb{U} for the universal class, but that's your choice, not mine.

@egreg right, what would you use then?

@baxx \mathcal{U}, for instance. But it depends on your general conventions about notation.

Ok thanks
I have no convention, part of why i'm asking ;)

11:10 AM
@Johannes_B it doesn't say when to use each and using that to reach the project might even work:-)

@DavidCarlisle Ok :-)

Finally TUGBoat arrived in BlackForest ;-)

@Johannes_B @JosephWright done with edits I think

@DavidCarlisle Nice to hear the site a bit cleaned up. Thanks :-)

So @David is our new @lockstep. :)

11:26 AM
@PauloCereda surely the usual saying is "new and improved" !

@DavidCarlisle With more LaTeX3!

@PauloCereda you must have me confused with @JosephWright

@DavidCarlisle Nah pretty sure it's you. :)

@PauloCereda LaTeX3 (well expl3) rocks!

11:47 AM
@DavidCarlisle Cool

@JosephWright Just read the tugboat article. Less negative about latex than I expected.

@DavidCarlisle Petr's one?

@JosephWright yes

@DavidCarlisle I was thinking you'd appreciate @egreg's one ;-)

@JosephWright shame you don't have the older stuff, that log starts mid 1997 and I got the job here in november 97 and that's more or less when I stopped:-)
@JosephWright didn't bother to look at that!

11:51 AM
@DavidCarlisle It's not my fault
@DavidCarlisle Probably for the best

@JosephWright although actually I didn't commit so much stuff, we sat around and chatted a lot but Frank did most of the source level commits in those days. I only started regularly committing once we started 2e

@DavidCarlisle Sounds good

@barbarabeeton I'm very disappointed that you did not exert more editorial control and excise the figure on page 152 of the current tugboat.

@DavidCarlisle I think I know what figure you're referring to. :P

@DavidCarlisle Ah, now you've read it
@DavidCarlisle You did see the bit where he says LaTeX is wrong, yes?

12:03 PM
@JosephWright he's been saying that for 30 years

12:34 PM
@DavidCarlisle nicely retagged all the project stuff and now:

@Johannes_B just delete the l3 one:-)

1:02 PM
Good maen

@ChristianHupfer Glück Auf

How to do sub and superscript with \bigcap ? It works as \cap_{i=1}^n for \cap, but when I apply this to \bigcap it puts the values above and below rather than to the side

@Johannes_B Ah, der Freiberger ;-) Heute schon unter Tage gewesen? ;-)

@ChristianHupfer No.
@ChristianHupfer No templates can be found there.

@Johannes_B Well, the precious stuff comes out of the mountains, from mines ... the precious templates as well :-P

1:17 PM
@ChristianHupfer The precious ones have a strict copyright license.

1:27 PM
@baxx it works like \sum so by default under in display and to the side in inline, but you can use \bigcap\nolimits_{...} to always get the subscript to the side

1:43 PM
@DavidCarlisle thanks, that' s the way that the book had it as... do you have a preference with this?

@baxx if you are using it to take the intersection over a set of sets then as for \sum, having the limits underneath is normal

Hmm ok , i wasn't sure if there was something that I was missing understanding wise in this... basically it's just saying the intersection of a finite number of sets= $\bigcap_{i=1}^n A_i = \{x : x \in A_i \text{ for every } A_i\}$
I thought that would render sorry

@baxx I'd use the default setting.
@baxx you need a tex engine:-)

@DavidCarlisle ok thanks - what would be the case for the sub / superscript to the side in the case of bigcap ?
Ah - I just started mathjax and I can see it :)
ha, on here it renders to the side :P

@baxx as I say it's like sum for inline use $\bigcap_...
@baxx well it will with $ that is an inline expression so it uses a cramped style so as not to disturb the linespacing. In display math the limits go above and below as there is more room
@baxx you have some user script to use mathjax in chat?

1:57 PM
@DavidCarlisle I have a little thing that I can activate it with (mathjax)
I tried to paste then it didn't work 2 secs

@baxx no it's Ok I could have such a thing, but it would be confusing here, where normally we want to see the tex markup

Yes fair, vpaste.net/rdQiG that's it anyway, I have it as a button on my bookmarks so I click it and it runs... can't remember how I actually set that up now though :/

2:35 PM
> Next we have number four, 'Crunchy Frog'.
@PauloCereda :) ^^^

2:54 PM
Any hint on what he might want? latex-community.org/forum/…

@Johannes_B A better translation machine?

@egreg :-D

@Johannes_B not really… a footnote containing a hyperlink? Bookmarks?

@clemens I would understand the label to jump to the footnote. But a footnote jumping to sections?

3:14 PM
@DavidCarlisle -- ah, now why would i want to have done that? (tee hee ... did you never consider that my exercise of editorial control might be to leave it in?)

@barbarabeeton I'm sure you used to be nice, clearly you met bad influences in Darmstadt,.

Let's see what happens, or if something happens:
Where can i get a LaTeX thesis template and how does it help me?

3:39 PM
@Johannes_B is that just bait to trap people promoting a thesis template?

@DavidCarlisle Jep :-)

@Johannes_B should I retweet so you get more people seeing your tweet?

@Johannes_B I don't get it :(

@clemens I wonder if that's a good idea or if it will cause sleepless nights.
@baxx I don't like templates.

@baxx It's a trap, so @Johannes_B can collect more thesis templates and document what's wrong with them,

3:44 PM
@Johannes_B oh right :) fair
@DavidCarlisle i just bumped into your response about Preambles actually... does everyone here write the preamble specific to the document? I have a header.tex file that has a load of packages in it in my template directory which I use for any LaTeX writing that I kinda add to gradually. Seeing as the documents just compiled into PDF and not run constantly I thought having it a bit slower would be worth it to save adding things all the time

@baxx don't ask me, I haven't written a latex document for years, but if I was writing one I certainly wouldn't start by loading any package I'd ever used.

@clemens One thing i noticed: There never seems to be a template at golatex. Everything we get there are vorlagen, so it seems germans don't use the english term.

@DavidCarlisle oh right, you just use the LaTeX for math symbols then?

@baxx I just use it for answering questions here:-)

@DavidCarlisle oh ha, I'm grateful for that then

3:51 PM
@baxx You should at least load all the packages that have the string DPC in the source. They are bullet proof and free of bugs.

@baxx the last document I really worked on using latex syntax was the latex companion book, but that's 10 years old now, the MathML PDf is typeset by latex but generated from the XML sources. Oh no I lie I did a beamer talk for UKTUG a couple of weeks ago, that was input as latex (but didn't have any preamble other than including beamer and setting its theme thing)
@Johannes_B sound advice

@Johannes_B so would that involve grepping all the source to find out?

@baxx no the version strings as printed in the log

@Johannes_B I wouldn't use template in German, either

Oh, exxactly 5000 packages on CTAN right now.

3:52 PM
what's the log :/ I really don't know my way around LaTeX tbh, I just compile a doc.

@baxx if you make zzz.tex all the information about it goes into zzz.log

@DavidCarlisle ah right ok, my compile script automatically deletes all them kind of files at the end >.<

@clemens Have you read my short summary about Thesis.cls?

This gets run at the end of the PdfLaTeX and Biber compilations vpaste.net/rkb8t

@baxx If you run in nonstopmode (which i guess you do) and your script is deleting all log-files at the end ... Have you ever seen a LaTeX error?

4:00 PM
@baxx how often do you run that? removing log files just makes it harder to debug problems. removing aux files stops latex working.

@Johannes_B I don't actually run in nonstopmode (I'm guessing that's when it compiles on file save). I've seen a LaTeX error, like if I try and use a font that's not on the system
@DavidCarlisle everytime I compile a file

@baxx then you can never have any cross references work.

here's the compile script that calls it vpaste.net/fTLZM

@baxx If latex notices something fishy, it stops and asks you to take actions. Unless in nonstopmode, where all errors are silently skipped (but logged).

Hmm, I'll take log and aux off the clean file than thanks
@Johannes_B oh right, no then, pretty sure that I don't use that

4:02 PM
@baxx you can cut and paste here you know, no need for links

@DavidCarlisle I thought it might be annoying for the chat window and might not format well, I'll try next time

@baxx Have a look at latexmk it checks how many runs are needed and does them all.

@baxx I know machines are faster than they were but it is crazy to do that, why latex three times and run biber every time you edit, it just makes things slow, and isn't even guaranteed to be enough.

@DavidCarlisle because it's worked so far, I've no proper thought process to add other than that :(

@baxx it's not guaranteed to work (it is easy to make a document that takes more runs than that) and it is massively wasteful of your time, if you edit one equation then you just need to run latex once not three times and you don't need to run biber unless you have edited a new citation.

4:06 PM
@Johannes_B I'm not sure which means I probably haven't

@clemens templateConfusion/ourfamousthesistemplate on github

@DavidCarlisle i guess i haven't thought too much about it, I just run the script and it opens the file when it's done... what's the recommendation? To look into using the latexmk that was suggested? cheers

Hello everyone.

@baxx latexmk or (or arara, or make or ...) or most editors I would have thought let you specify such a pipeline directly. personally I normally just type pdflatex on the commandline

I just run this script from eshell
at the mo

Q: What is Tex's gullet?

Charles StewartChapter 7 of The TEXbook famously talks of Tex as having 'eyes', 'mouth' and 'stomach' and goes on to talk of Tex's 'digestive processes' and keeps reusing these terms. Chapter 8 introduces talk of Tex's 'gullet', apparently a reference back to this extended metaphor, without further explanation...

@baxx You can safely do it by hand, in most cases you don't need to run biber. But latexmk is quite helpful for everyday support (and the hell if a MWE is faulty).
@FaheemMitha HI

The answers of Sean/egreg and David seem to conflict a bit

@CharlesStewart well then the other two must be wrong.

As if Knuth's definition of the gullet differs from the one taken up in Tex by Topic, etc

Hi @Johannes_B. You seem to be here a lot.

4:10 PM
@clemens btw: permission to retweet allowed

@DavidCarlisle :)

@FaheemMitha This is a nice place :-)

Actually, David seems to be here a lot too.

@Johannes_B :) don't expect exciting effects

@CharlesStewart That's the point the gullet stuff is mostly meaningless and TbT doesn't use that analogy, so naturally it's different

4:11 PM
Does anyone have tips on a good standalone scanner which is supported by Linux?

@clemens I don't :-)

@DavidCarlisle ok I'll look into one of them. My only thought is that the time I'll spend learning a new tool would be greater than the time it saves me. I've heard arara is good though so maybe I'll try that
I've still got to get round to using refTeX properly! :/

@DavidCarlisle The metaphor in your answer about regurgitation is quite graphic
I should probably accept your answer, since it is the one that is relevant to what Knuth meant by the term

Arara is some sort of build thing, right? I've never used it. Is it popular?

@FaheemMitha Yes, see for example tex.stackexchange.com/questions/64/…

4:22 PM
@TorbjørnT. Thanks.

@FaheemMitha And the maintainer is @PauloCereda

@Johannes_B Yes, that I'm aware of.
But shouldn't it have some sort of duck motif?
Apparently arara is some sort of parrot. Possibly a macaw.

@CharlesStewart @egreg always likes it if I get a tick on a question he's answered.
@FaheemMitha ask @PauloCereda :-)

@CharlesStewart If you want to accept the wrong answer…

@clemens I searched for Vorlage `:-/

4:33 PM
@egreg You and David could be a comedy act. Like Penn and Teller. Or Fry and Laurie. Except with More TeX. But I've said that already, I think.

@baxx as I say I would just type pdflatex on the commandline and not use a tool at all, most likely

@clemens One includes a block of code for adding a nomenclature (LiveTex Version) and a commented block with the TeTEX version.

@DavidCarlisle fair enough !

Who here uses arara regularly?

4:35 PM
@FaheemMitha Or Statler and Waldorf
Statler and Waldorf are a pair of Muppet characters known for their cantankerous opinions and mutual penchant for heckling. The two elderly men first appeared in The Muppet Show, where they consistently jeered the entirety of the cast and their performances from their balcony seats. Statler and Waldorf are named after two New York City hotels, the Statler Hilton and the Waldorf-Astoria. In The Muppet Show, the two were always trashing Fozzie Bear's humor, except for one occasion where Fozzie, with help from Bruce Forsyth, heckled them back. In contrast, they found themselves vastly entertaining...

@egreg Or the original Odd Couple.

@FaheemMitha but they were both old, so not at all like the present case.

@DavidCarlisle Who were old? The Odd Couple?

@FaheemMitha whatever:-)

I thought they were youngish. I remember seeing the movie. Was there a movie? Or maybe a TV series.

4:37 PM
@FaheemMitha yes

@FaheemMitha Of course you mean @DavidCarlisle as Felix Ungar and me as Oscar Madison.

@egreg I'm not sure. Which of you is the neat freak?
Autotools should have proper support for TeX, but currently does not appear to.

@FaheemMitha Let's wait for Felix's^H^H^H^H^H David's reply

It's annoying.

I have seen this sophisticated titlepage before, now i know where it comes from: A template!

4:40 PM
@egreg His reply may be "whatever".

@egreg I'm ignoring you so you'll have to wait a while

@DavidCarlisle Apparently Shaw used to write people letters where he explained why he couldn't be bothered to reply.

"I searched the web for hours and want you to save that time" That is exactly what i had mentioned before, either in a mail to @barbara, @clemens or Vel. But the result is very very hacky.

5:08 PM
@Johannes_B case #3456976 (number estimated) :p

@clemens :-(

3 hours later…
7:43 PM
Any Git experts about?

I'm not an expert, but I use it quite a bit
Have you a question?

@CharlesStewart Yes ;-)

Go on...

@CharlesStewart I've made two changes locally and realise one is wrong. I've tried git revert but that leaves both the original commit and the revert in the log. How do I zap both and just leave the one 'good' commit?

I would use git checkout to rewind to an earlier point in the history

7:50 PM
@CharlesStewart So redo the good commit by hand?

When you are on a branch that doesn't have the later commits, the logs should not be seen
No, just git-checkout the id of the last commit that you are happy with

@CharlesStewart But that then says I've got a detached head ....

You can then reattch the head by specifying a branch for it

@CharlesStewart All commits must be to master
@CharlesStewart There's a linear history, no branches
I guess I'll use the usual 'revert to the server and start again' approach

There are commands that undo commits

7:57 PM
@CharlesStewart I assume so :-)

I don't tend to use them, but I don't think git-revert has the semantics you want

@CharlesStewart It's only one commit to redo, I think I'll go for the path of least resistance (or just put up with the revert in the history)

Have you looked at git reset?
git reset --hard <commit> is supposed to throw away the commits done since commit
That doesn't introduce anything to give you a nonlinear history

@CharlesStewart Yes, that's what I normally go for :-)

Why doesn't it work for you now?

8:06 PM
@CharlesStewart Well it does at the cost of throwing away the one good checkin, but that's not a big issue

So the point is that you want to throw away a commit, but not the latest commit?
I think I dimly recall that is possible

@CharlesStewart Well that was what I was interested in pulling off, but never mind: I've gone for the hard reset approach
I suspect the people who write Git aren't interested in this sort of thing

OK. It is probably simpler than the alternative.
I think they are interested, but you are into advanced git usage territory then
Definitely above my level :)

8:52 PM
@JosephWright looks like you have been following xkcd's git manual again...

@DavidCarlisle Yup

@JosephWright mail on team list about a much simpler version control branching:-)

9:05 PM
Right, the unanswered list ...

Surely this is a dupe of something?

Q: Misplaced alignment tab character & error while using bibliography

KajaWhen I build my tex file, I get this error: ! Misplaced alignment tab character &. l.6 \newblock Chapman & Hall/CRC, six edition, 2003. I can't figure out why you would want to use a tab mark here. If you just want an ampersand, the remedy is simple: Just type `I\&' now. But if some right brace ...

@DavidCarlisle -- i'm trying to get rid of some ams questions. for this one: amsbook \ref: how to include chapter number selectively? the question Smartly omit chapter number in equation numbering would seem to be a perfect duplicate, but i figured i'd better test before linking. the example in the answer doesn't work -- the wrong (current) chapter number is reported.

Q: Overfull\Underfull hbox warnings

Shray SharanI understand that a lot has already been discussed on this topic but all the answers give a very generic solution which I tried but was not able to solve the problem. I have a very lengthy document and I have completed the coding. But strangely I am getting a badbox warning on almost every page. ...

@DavidCarlisle On the version business, the issue is that we need a single branch, which is tricky using a system based around lots of branches :-)
@DavidCarlisle Looks OK to me

Close as OT, due to clear typo?

@Manuel -- you proposed an approach on this one: How can I redefine \int to put a negative space after the integral sign, but keep the limits properly set?. if you think that the proposal you gave in a comment would be satisfactory, please make an answer.

@ChristianHupfer -- you said in a comment that "This question will provoke opinion-based answers": cleveref vs. IEEEtrantools/IEEEeqnarray. there's no test example. should we make that comment formal and close?

Q: Why do I see strange symbols like '?2312?' instead of strings after running LEd?

SumanWhy do I see strange symbols like '?2312?' instead of strings after running LEd like following image?

@Kurt OT

[Increase the thickness of a brace](tex.stackexchange.com/q/231276} seems covered well enough by Import curly brackets from MathDesign (Utopia) to make it a duplicate.

Q: Is there a general term for subscripts and superscripts?

Jon Mark PerryGiven subscript and superscript, and maybe on the left hand side as well, what is the general term for such features? And what are they called on the left hand side? And how do you do this?

@barbarabeeton No. Footnotes in math should not be used.

@egreg -- then it just remains open?

@egreg Can you say off the top of your head what characters are allocated class 0 and 255 respectively in the XeLaTeX format by default?

@barbarabeeton What's the purpose of solving a useless problem?
@ArthurReutenauer No. I think that every character is 0 by default, and boundary is 255, but I'm not sure.

@egreg Ah, too bad :-( No worries.
@egreg Yes, I think something like that too, but I couldn’t remember where this was defined. I’ll chase it.
