@MarianoSuárez-Alvarez Hi! Long time since we spoke!
How're you doing?

2 hours later…
6:34 AM
I am the only user here in chat ... everybody has gone... :D

7:13 AM
@Johannes_B: Guten Morgen

@ChristianHupfer Good morning
@ChristianHupfer How are your today?

@Johannes_B: I am fine... and how are you?

tex.stackexchange.com/questions/200561/… Lokking at this, is the OR some kind of oparator here and should be upright?
@ChristianHupfer My right foot hurts.

@Johannes_B: You walked too much the recent days, I suppose... It will get better

@ChristianHupfer Any opinion on the oparator from a few comments ago?

7:29 AM
@Johannes_B: Sorry , I was distracted -- Yes, I suppose it be upright and (bold ?)

@ChristianHupfer Thanks.
@ChristianHupfer Bold as well?

@Johannes_B: That's a personal taste rather... upright suffices
I am just inserting the ideas from yesterday into my package
@HenriMenke: Good morning
Where are our Gods this morning... they have left us... despaired

@ChristianHupfer Good morning to you sir! :)

@HenriMenke: sir? :D

Q: how to make fbox produce similar result to boxed from amsmath when used inside display math?

NasserI use Scientific word to generate Latex, and from its GUI, it only supports \fbox to put a frame around a displayed equation. i.e. I select the equation from the GUI and click on a button which adds a frame. The latex it generates adds fbox inside \[...\] and so I have no control over this. Wha...

What's the problem in there? I don't get it -- because I have not used Scientic World???
@Johannes_B: No reaction from Mr. Banana -- I am desolated, nobody comforting me ...

@HenriMenke We were just talking about your algorithm/imath answer from yesterday.

http://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/200561/how-to-resolve-the-error-missing-i‌nserted-inside-an-algorithm2e Lokking at this, is the OR some kind of oparator here and should be upright?
And looking at this, i should double read what i post.

7:46 AM
@Johannes_B: Wy? Is thr sme prblm wit te pohst?

@Johannes_B There are even further typographical issues than the italic "OR". The "++" for instance.
@ChristianHupfer Spidey's opinion

@HenriMenke Out of curiosity, how would you typeset the ++?

@HenriMenke: Which one? The algorithm question?

@HenriMenke: I feel deeply addressed... sob

7:51 AM
@HenriMenke That is a pretty good idea.

8:05 AM
Tidying up the flat
@DavidCarlisle, @Harald: Good morning

Hello world.

@ChristianHupfer I am here if I can clarify anything.

@Nasser: Yes... I added a code you can insert into the preamble and SW will use that one. My document runs out of the box. I can't say what's wrong with SW there

@ChristianHupfer but as I mentioned now there in the comment, the new code you have does not work. This does not compile. You changed the code inside the document to make it work. But it had $$ in there before. Here it is
\documentclass[11pt]{article}%
\usepackage{amsmath} \setlength{\fboxsep}{10pt} \LetLtxMacro\LaTeXStandardFBox\fbox \renewcommand{\fbox}[1]{% \[% \LaTeXStandardFBox{% \ensuremath{\displaystyle{#1}}% }% End of \fbox \]% }%
\begin{document} %can't modify code below
\[ \fbox{$x_1\left( t\right) =x_{20}\frac{t}{1+t^2}+\frac{1}{\sqrt{\left( 1+t^2\right) }}$}% \]
\end{document}

Good morning, too

8:15 AM
@Nasser: You know, that $$ is deprecated?
@Nasser: Are the $ inserted by this SW stuff?

@ChristianHupfer no, I mean changed the code, there was [ \fbox{$.......$}], you changed it to just \fbox{....}. Again, can't change the code itself :)
@ChristianHupfer All the code there is generated by SW.

@Nasser: Oh my dear ... that's the reason I don't use such GUI stuff

that is the whole point. I can add smart macros in preamble only. But I can't edit the code itself.

It appears to me that the whole \begin{document} ... \end{document} is "write-protected" and cant be changed by @Nasser
damn, I took to long typing it ... :D

@Harald yes. If I edit the code, then SW will not longer be able to display it if it does not support the code. So I spend lots of time trying to add macros and things outside the code. in preamble. OK. I use texlive to compile it.

8:30 AM
something like \renewcommand{\fbox}[1]{\boxed{#1}} seems to cause trouble...

@Nasser: Updated...

@Harald I see. Yes, that is something I can do. But not if it hangs latex :)

Put on hold after less than half an hour?

@Johannes_B: Which one?

Q: Mimic fonts and spacing of tufte-book class

dvk106I am writing a book using memoir class and I want to mimic fonts and spacing of tufte-book class.

8:35 AM
@ChristianHupfer thanks., Getting close. I tried your current version. But it does not work on the code as is. The code was inside [....]. It works if it is not in display mode. But the code generated is in display mode. Here is MWE again. Please try it with this one
\documentclass[11pt]{article}%
\usepackage{amsmath}
\usepackage{xstring}
\usepackage{letltxmacro}%
\setlength{\fboxsep}{10pt}
\begin{document}

\LetLtxMacro\LaTeXStandardFBox\fbox
\renewcommand{\fbox}[1]{%
  \[%
  \LaTeXStandardFBox{%
    \expandarg
    \StrSubstitute[1]{#1}{$}{$\displaystyle}%
  }% End of \fbox
  \]%
}%

\[
\fbox{$x_1\left(  t\right)  =x_{20}\frac{t}{1+t^2}+\frac{1}{\sqrt{\left(1+t^2\right)}}$}%
\]

\end{document}

@Nasser: I am getting angry, actually ... adding this feature.. add that one

@ChristianHupfer? I am not asking you to add any new feature. I posted MWE as is. The MWE example I posted was the above. I did not change anything. But thanks for your time. No need to spend time on this if you do not want to.

@Nasser: Last change from me, quite obvious ;-) I will not add something more. If it does not work, it's basically SW fault and not mine
@Johannes_B: Ok, that's was too quick -- It was in the Low Quality Posts queue for me
@Johannes_B: Now I understand you about ... you know ;-)

@ChristianHupfer I think the Q is quiete interesting (i hope it will be) so thanks for casting a reopen vote.

@Nasser there are new packages in the preamble, too. (referring to you comment about having a compile error)

8:47 AM
@ChristianHupfer thanks! last version worked. If you just used the MWE I posted to try things on it, then you would not have been frustrated :) But thanks again for your time on this.

@Harald: Your idea about \renewcommand{\fbox{\boxed...} might work, but I have no chance to test that

na, I think it causes an endless recursion from boxed to fbox to boxed... But I learned the letltxmacro from your answer. Thanks!

@Harald: If \boxed uses \fbox, then your are right -- I did not check it.
@Harald: Yes, \letltxmacro is useful for commands with optional arguments, although I just don't know whether \fbox has an opt. argument. If not, \let would be ok too

@ChristianHupfer "I suspect, that \boxed is doing nothing different than \fbox{\ensuremath{\displaystyle...}", I suspect your suspicion to be true :)

8:54 AM
@Harald: :D It's only an assumption ... I did not look into amsmath

9:17 AM
I am off for some hours, unfortunately... See you...

see you, too

@Harald: thanks

@Nasser The easiest solution is not using boxes. They don't really work typographically in math.
Other than maybe in exam answers

@percusse I see. But SW GUI only has few buttons to add frames. One for tight frame and one for frame with more space around. Both use \fbox. Screen shot. I have really no control on code generated.
I select the displayed equation, then click on the button.

@Nasser I mean don't use any decorations. It is what it is

9:24 AM
@percusse I see. But frames make the equation stand out, and the teacher likes this, so they quickly see the final answer.

@Nasser Ah so it is homework, nevermind then.

@percusse yes, school HW's. I am not writing a paper. If I did, I would not use SW actually. But for HW's, using GUI makes it very fast to type. so many HW's and so little time.

@Nasser Might be, depends on affinity. I can't use any WYSIWYG for text anymore.

@Nasser so little time, and still you care about the size of that little t :D ;)

@Harald well, I figured Latex should be able to do better. If I was using microsoft word and equation editor, I do not think I would care ;) I was going to take a class this fall, but then I found the teacher wanted everyone to use word for reports, then I decided to not take the course just for this. No way will I use word to write reports after Latex.

10:04 AM
@Nasser: I strongly suggest to use a plain editor or TeXMaker (if really needed) but not those GUI thingies. I started with LaTeX in 1997 (on Windows feel ashamed, with WinEdt) and it made me swear. I then switched over to Emacs and pure manual compilation and was happy
For the vi - users: No, I don't say, that vi is worse than Emacs. I just use Emacs...that's all

@ChristianHupfer So you hate vim users.
Oh my. :)

@PauloCereda here we go again

back so soon? I'll fetch some lunch... see you

@PauloCereda: I did not say I hate vim users nor vi(m) ;-)

@tohecz Now Christian said he hates vim users more than vim itself. :P ^^
(it's been a while since our last chapter of the holy editor wars)

10:10 AM
@PauloCereda: I just understand how quotes can be corrupted by Paulo :D

@ChristianHupfer <3

@PauloCereda: You are determined to destroy my 'fame' here :D

@ChristianHupfer Beware of the vim alley. Tom is also there waiting with a crowbar. :P

@PauloCereda: Tom? Tohecz? ;-) he knows about my feelings ... towards him and vim ;-)

@Nasser one day you'll learn it's easier just to write the correct thing than fix automatically generated wrong things. One day:-)
5

10:14 AM
@ChristianHupfer That's it, I'm gonna get a crowbar too. :P

@PauloCereda seems reasonable

@DavidCarlisle Hey! <3

@PauloCereda: I had to lookup crowbar ... never seen that word before... We call it "Ziegenfuß" :D
@PauloCereda: I am awaiting your Ziegenfuß ... come on, come on :D

@ChristianHupfer The name in Portuguese is pé-de-cabra. You know what it means literally? :)

I know cabron in Spanish..

10:18 AM
@ChristianHupfer Quite close. :) It means goat's foot. :P

@PauloCereda: I referred to cabra only
@PauloCereda: It's the same as Ziegenfuß :D

@ChristianHupfer o.O

@DavidCarlisle: One day ;-) Doomsday is more likely ...

@ChristianHupfer I wonder what will happen if M ever decides to use vim instead of emacs.

@PauloCereda: M???? Sorry, is that an insider's joke? ;-) M of James Bond?

10:23 AM
@ChristianHupfer David's little boy. :)

@PauloCereda: Sorry, I had no idea...

@ChristianHupfer No worries. :)

@ChristianHupfer Oh, no! It's well known that M uses Emacs.

@egreg o.O

@PauloCereda, @egreg: It would be a rebellion in the House of Carlisle if M would use vi(m)

10:25 AM
@ChristianHupfer LOL

@PauloCereda Like most knowledgeable people. :P

@egreg ooh! :)

egreg: Pure wisdom ;-)

@ChristianHupfer Putenrollbraten mit Brotsauce, Kartoffeln und Mischgemüse. Mensch, war das super.

@Johannes_B: Selbst gekocht, nehme ich an?

10:30 AM
@ChristianHupfer Yes, indeed :-)

@Johannes_B: Ich freue mich auf die neue Küche ....

@ChristianHupfer Will the oven have access to water?

@Johannes_B: The liver guy cooked ;-)
@Johannes_B: If I pour into it .. yes :D

@ChristianHupfer It is important if you want to bake your own bread.

@Johannes_B: Yes, I know, but that was not main aspect to decide which oven we should buy... A jar of water will do too...
@Johannes_B: Besides C. is responsible for the baking department :D

10:35 AM
@ChristianHupfer Be careful, some oven can react pretty badly to thermo shocks.

@Johannes_B No Schweinbraten?

@egreg No, turkey. It was yummy ;-) Have to test Scheinebraten at a later point.

@Johannes_B: Scheinebraten :D :D Tastes ... expensive:D

@Johannes_B I don't like Pute/turkey too much. By the way, in our dialect, the word for turkey is “pita”.

@Johannes_B: I will prepare a Black Forest Flammekueche ... a former colleague of mine will be here in about one hour

10:39 AM
@ChristianHupfer Oh, sounds good.
@egreg Pita, isn't that some kind of bread?

@egreg: It's quite similar then ... pita <--> pute ... I believe, Pute is no original German expression

@Johannes_B Not in our region. Maybe you mean 'pizza'. ;-)

@egreg How do you prepare the dough for pizza?

@ChristianHupfer So long as "Flammeküche" doesn't mean “burning kitchen”.

@egreg: I just checked: Pute cames from some Dutch word ...
@egreg: No :D
@egreg: It's a dialect word, "kueche" --> Kuchen -- The 'e' after 'u' prolonges that letter (terribly)
@egreg: But someone will even manage to get a burning kitchen ;-)

10:43 AM
@Johannes_B Flour, water, salt and leaven. I guess “pizza” comes from Greek “pita”.

@Johannes_B: Compare Turkish 'pide' ...
Welcome to Cooking.SX! :D
@egreg: And the leaven is yeast?

@egreg normal amount of yeast/leaven to have the dough ready in bout an hour, or much less and letting it stay over night at pretty cool temperatures?

@Johannes_B that's not so good idea

@tohecz Why? Which part?

@ChristianHupfer Good pizza is made with yeast. And needs long leavening.

10:48 AM
I don't know how to cook. :( I'm good at eating though. :)

@egreg: Yes, I suspected that... I keep the dough normally for two or three hours, at a warm place
@PauloCereda: Learn to cook and the ladies come in :D

Last week I managed to eat rice with hashi. :)
@ChristianHupfer ooh!

@PauloCereda: What's hashi? The sticks?

@ChristianHupfer Chopsticks, I guess. :)

@PauloCereda: Some Chinese girls showed me how to use the sticks some 25 years when they had their exchange year here in Germany at our school

10:52 AM
@ChristianHupfer cool! :)

@PauloCereda: Yes, 25 years is a long time ... I forgot how to use them :D
@PauloCereda: Now it takes me another 25 years to learn it again...

@ChristianHupfer :)

@PauloCereda: So you get your food in restaurants, if you can't cook?

I'm traumatized with this Chinese restaurant. They once tried to offer me a roast duck. :(
@ChristianHupfer There's mom nearby. :P

@PauloCereda: Happy fellow ;-)
@PauloCereda: Poor Paulo -- I will try not to eat duck again :-(

11:00 AM
@ChristianHupfer :)

@PauloCereda Your duck obsession reminds me of this video. ;-] (lyrics in French)

@Johannes_B keeping it overnight sounds just too long

@egreg: I know pizza dough recipes where they pour a lot of olive oil into the flour mixture. I hate this, it makes the dough incredibly sticky ... to the fingers :D
@eiterorm: As a ducktor (:D) I prescribe some medical cure to Paulo, to heal him from his obsession

@ChristianHupfer of course he doesn't use vim (he uses Word :(

@DavidCarlisle: How can we comfort you? ;-)

BinderGood questing I will try to fix ur problem 👍

Does anybody recognize a pattern?

11:06 AM
@ChristianHupfer It's OK: its learning social interaction rather than learning computer use:-)
@PauloCereda did you see: BBC says Microsoft is going to buy minecraft

@ChristianHupfer Yes, they consistently write "ur" instead of "your", and end the post with glyphs that don't display in my browser. =P

@DavidCarlisle: Social interaction? Going to a self-help-group for people being despaired about the "Product - Which - Name-Does-Not-Be-Named-Here"?
@eiterorm: Try again :D

@eiterorm You should install some proper fonts:-) 👍🚶 U+1f44d THUMBS UP SIGN U+1f6b6 PEDESTRIAN

@DavidCarlisle It didn't seem like I was missing too much information there. =P So far I haven't had any trouble with the standard typefaces (Arial in this case).

11:26 AM
@DavidCarlisle Oh my!
@eiterorm I prefer the term duck enthusiast. :)

@PauloCereda: That's true only in your version of reality ... outside of it...however... ;-)

@ChristianHupfer You better behave, or I'm going to send my duck army to the Black Forest. :P
Woe, I need to use PowerPoint right now. :(

@PauloCereda: There are some Chinese - Black Forest - Restaurants here ;-)

@ChristianHupfer You better behave. That duck army is no joke.

@PauloCereda: Ok, you have calamities with Power Point... I will cut off my Dr Cox - alike behaviour ;-) (for a while)

11:33 AM
@eiterorm o.O

@tohecz With a low amount of yeast (.3 % mass of flour) and keeping it cool, it'll be just fine.

@Johannes_B The wicket witch of the yeast. Oh wait. :)

@PauloCereda I, too, know a few ducks. ;-]

@eiterorm: Donald Duck will not be enough :D
Sorry guess, now I have to go for some hours... really ... Till later on...

@PauloCereda I wonder if @egreg would also change his mind about M.S. if they offered him 2billion dollars? bbc.co.uk/news/technology-29142975

11:49 AM
@DavidCarlisle LOL I heard Notch would step down.

@DavidCarlisle I'm waiting they offer me 2M$ for my book on LaTeX programming.

@egreg well Leslie works for them, so you might have a chance

Great news: I am working on a new version of arara based on the experience from nightingale. Some things will change, but the tool will become easier than ever. :)
@egreg ooh! :)

@PauloCereda even easier?
@PauloCereda what is nightingale? I Like the name.
@PauloCereda And why did you have to come up with this plan using PowerPoint?

@LaRiFaRi Yes. :) Rules will be written in YAML and I'll add a couple of helper fields to have more consistent and powerful rules. :)
@LaRiFaRi It's my code sandbox for arara. : github.com/cereda/nightingale
@LaRiFaRi I just feel like mentioning it. :) I need to stick with something good while being forced to use PowerPoint. :)

@PauloCereda ah ok. Cool. Thought, the rules are in YAML already... stupid me. But well, I don't write my own but brainlessly use what you offer...

@LaRiFaRi <3
@LaRiFaRi: nightingale is more powerful than arara rulewise because it has a complete scripting language underneath, but the learning curve is steeper. I wrote it in order to try new things that eventually will make their way into arara (for example, multiline directives). But documentwise, they behave the same. :)

12:59 PM
@PauloCereda I hope, this nightingale will not be successful.... I do not want to edit all my answers here in order to change the surreptitious arara advertisment
@egreg you are right about the off-topic. Thanks for testing the stuff. You are on mac?

@LaRiFaRi Too late. :) But they are different tools. Once I port these new things into arara, the tool will be insanely powerful.

hahaha. Expecting that

@LaRiFaRi I code because it's fun, so I always have a lot of crazy things to add. :)

@egreg heared Shosta two days ago. Tonhalle Zürich. I thought of you... You should give that guy another chance :-)

@LaRiFaRi Yes, since 1985. ;-)
@LaRiFaRi No way.

1:05 PM
@egreg LOL

@egreg ok, I heard his 15th. Maybe really a bit crazy. steep learning curve like in nightingale. But you could start with some jazz suite... Or blast your ears with his 10th
gonna go. Tschüss!

I've started leaving standardized "Welcome to TeX.SX!" comments, and asking for (and explaining) MWE's where appropriate. I assumed this is welcomed, but just to be sure: this is not something which is reserved for moderators, right?

@egreg Outside of the review queue as well?

@eiterorm Sure, why not?

Q: Having the arsclassica titles shape using classicthesis

domiI am using classicthesis and I would like to customize the shape of the titles in the way arsclassica does. How can I do it ? This is a view of what I am searching for :

@Johannes_B I don't know why not. That's why I'm asking. ^^ I'd love to help with what I can, but I don't want to cause more trouble than good. I'm just asking to be sure. ;-]

@eiterorm Yes.

@DavidCarlisle By "standardized", I simply mean linking to the "Welcome to TeX.SX!" thread, as I have seen recommended, and link to what an MWE is and explain the benefits of an MWE.

@eiterorm There is no harm in friendly welcoming a new user.

2:01 PM
Today's featured article in the german Wikipedia: Perl

2:18 PM
@Johannes_B This is offensive. :P

@Johannes_B That's because TeX is old. People expect Python-Perl etc. like supercommunities which involve gazillion of blogs and code snippet pages.
When they find one, they expect to tweak the source code right away just as you would do in other languages
Disappointment sets in swiftly

@percusse Could this be prevented by reading the introduction part of an, well, introduction?
What is LaTeX and what it's not.

@Canageek moral of the story: never read the documentation, bad things happen
It's an annualy recursive comment heheh
So @DavidCarlisle Needs to use it again for the tradition

@percusse I completely agree with this. Well in parts. Somethings are a bit more complicated and i enjoy the answers here on TeX.SX.
But, for example, my bib does not show, i only get question marks. How often do we have this question? Twice a wekk? Every day?

@Johannes_B Everytime a user meets with TeX. Because compiling the same thing twice and getting different results is a unique experience.
They can search for it but come on where is the fun in that? What's next? Working in a coal mine?

2:30 PM
@percusse I think if i keep thinking about this me head will explode.

Andrew CashnerOn TeX.SX we can help other people use TeX and friends. But what are some ways we can use TeX and friends to help other people? (...since no-one else on this site do anything related to TeX to help others. It's all about reputation, right @DavidCarlisle...)

@Werner How much more help does one need further than having a completely free amazing typesetting system as opposed to M$ Word? :) That busy church person is busy with taming that Office Suite

@percusse Did the comment address your concern or should I edit the question. I really am so impressed with the culture of goodwill on this site, and did not at all mean to suggest otherwise.

@AndrewCashner No problem, it might be my command of english too

@PauloCereda Not exactly sure why it's on TeX - LaTeX Meta.

@Werner OP is still a new user. Should it be moved?

@Werner It's a quite broad question and the TeX milleage might be very low IMHO.
I use TeX for things like the OP describes, but TeX plays just a smalll part of a greater scheme of things. :)

@PauloCereda True, while it's not about the site, it might not be a good fit on the main site.

4:11 PM
@Werner Yep.
@AndrewCashner Oh you are the author. :) I have a couple of insights towards your question. :)

@PauloCereda Great - I'm listening.

@AndrewCashner I actually need some available time to write a proper answer. I'll try to do it later on today. :) I use TeX for the catholic community I frequent.

@PauloCereda For now, Do you think the question is okay as written or should be improved?

4:26 PM
@AndrewCashner Well, I think I understood what you are looking for. :) Perhaps it's quite too broad, as @Werner and I were talking a couple of lines above. And I'm afraid TeX might end up playing just a minor role on any scheme, but that's just my humble POV. :)
@cgnieder: Clemens, do tell me (sorry, I had no time yet to play with your song package): is it possible to typeset the song with the chords, but only show them according to some option? (like chorded or lyric in songs)

@PauloCereda Thanks for your perspective, and you're probably right. I think it would actually be interesting to see how only a small bit of TeX could be used in a larger scheme. I think the idea that one needs to learn a huge system is daunting, and it would be good to see how much you can do with only a little.

@AndrewCashner I will try to cover the scheme I use and show how I use TeX and friends. :)

@PauloCereda Looking forward to it. :)

5:35 PM
@PaulGessler: Feel free to roll back the edit.

@Werner just wanted to see if you agreed with my interpretation.

@PaulGessler Yes.

@Werner ok, thx

5:48 PM
Good maen ;-)

@DavidCarlisle Stolen rep by copying other's answers? :P

6:06 PM
@HenriMenke You shouldn't have put up a bounty.

@egreg Why not?

@HenriMenke Did you really like the \str_case:nVTF trick? ;-)

6:21 PM
@egreg Yes, I liked it.
@egreg Also, you apparently need rep, so I wanted to give you some.

@egreg it's the best way
@Werner I only use tex to answer questions here, does that count:-)

6:43 PM
@egreg Am making a start on trying to get agreement re: l3regex. May take a while!

@JosephWright Ask everybody to be slightly drunk when voting for an agreement. :)
