@percusse: get your gun, sir: youtube.com/watch?v=2rjbtsX7twc

1 hour later…
2:05 AM
@egreg vim would do that. It's just that e`vi`l. I am a little concerned about the chances of LyX questions on this site though. We really don't have anyone (that I know of) versed well-enough with LyX to answer questions like this, or even to bounce questions back at the asker... :(

2:54 AM
@AndrewStacey Huh, interesting, but explains a problem I had some time ago. The change also makes it impossible to do atan2(\p0) with calc and let … in :(

4 hours later…
6:36 AM
@Qrrbrbirlbel But it does bring PGF in line with the rest of the world so on the whole it's a Good Thing. For your let syntax you could define a new function which is a wrapper around atan2 but with the arguments swapped. In the latest version of hobby (on the launchpad page) then I do something like that to ensure that whichever version of atan2 is used then I get the right answer.

I'm trying to get a custom command to work that displays a small png graphic inside a table
About ready to pull my hair out
\newcommand{\yes}{\raisebox{-\totalheight}{\includegraphics{img/yes.png}}}
any reason why that wouldn't work?
Seems pretty straightforward
The error is:
Underfull \hbox (badness 3919) in paragraph at lines 207--208
[]|\OT1/cmr/m/n/10.95 PK, in-cre-mented by

@Dan Not an error

Dan
@JosephWright it won't compile

@Dan You have a line that TeX can't fill 'nicely'
@Dan Well that may be the case but has nothing to do with the underfull box

Dan
@JosephWright changing the only column width I have control over to almost 0 makes no different
*difference
@JosephWright what can I do?

@Dan About the box?

Dan
7:24 AM
@JosephWright I don't understand, it is a table, not supposed to be a box
Whatever I need to do to get the document to compile

@Dan The two things you've posted don't show an error so there is not much I can say
Something else must be up

Dan
I have a table and I am inserting small png graphics in various columns, which I suspect is the culprit(s)

@Dan everything in TeX is a box or glue it doesn't mean a printed frame, just the internal structure TeX uses

@Dan That's normally fine: there must be something else

@Dan but you have not shown any problem that we can fix

@Dan that is an error _ is a math command for subscript you need \ _

Dan
is any of this an error?
@DavidCarlisle oh wow

\_ not \ _ stupid backtick formating in comments

Dan
<hangs head in shame>
all along my custom command codes were fine
I just put an underscore in there
gahhh!!!
well... thank you both VERY much
@DavidCarlisle @JosephWright on the bright side, I've mostly been able to get the hang of this
I'm thinking the late hour contributed to this error :P

1 hour later…
8:35 AM
@SeanAllred There's scottkosty who already commented on that one. You have a point though, but I'm not sure what can be done about it. I've referred people to the mailing list a couple of times, asking them to post there if no answer is given here.

8:49 AM
@SeanAllred That question is not answerable anyway.

Happy Talk Like a Pirate Day!

arrrrrrr, really? That?s today. And I already missed 12,5 hours without doing so...
Well, maybe better. Don't know, if they would understand that in Switzerland

@PauloCereda How do pirates talk?

@egreg A good resource: yarr.org.uk/talk :)
@JosephWright: ^^ :) Good old times of hat features. :)

10:40 AM
@PauloCereda Yo-ho-ho

@egreg Ahoy! Da'id is tryin to steal yer precious great doubloons!

@JosephWright On the search for a per mille sign in siunitx I found out, there is non. If I may do a feature request: In Germany we use that quite often (seems like in English speaking countries they don't). So a command for "per mille" (engl.) or "per mill" (am. engl.) would be cool. While searching I saw the sentence "[...] also predefines the \percent macro. While this is not a unit, it [...]". Regarding our discussion the last day, it actually is a unit. Just for your info. Thanks a lot.
@egreg the "ho-ho" sounds more like Santa Claus... :-)
But actually, apart of "arrrrrrrr" everywhere.... No clue, how a pirate talks in English

@LaRiFaRi I just followed instructions.

@egreg Oh, yeah, I see it at the end of the provided link. I will do my homeworks first...

@egreg Hi. Stuck again :(
@PauloCereda Hi Paulo

11:03 AM
@HarishKumar Hi Harish! How are you?
ooh I see a pokémon!
:)

yes
yes you do
ummm i have a question
the other day i was talking in here with david carlisle
about how i am getting heaps of underfull hboxes
because i am a latex noob
i basically have latex that looks a little like this
\textbf{Question 1} \\
Let $f:\left(\frac{1}{3}, \infty\right) \rightarrow R, f(x) = 2 \log{\left (3 x - 1 \right )} - 3$. Find the rule and
domain of the inverse function $f^{-1}.$ \\

\tab\tab\hrulefill \\
\tab\tab\hrulefill \\
\tab\tab\hrulefill \\
\tab\tab\hrulefill \\
\tab\tab\hrulefill \\
\tab\tab\hrulefill \\
david was saying it wasnt good, but we had to end the conversation there as he had to go
im sort of wondering if anyone has a hint or tip

@HarishKumar You put the choice in a makebox, which doesn't do line breaking. parbox instead, perhaps.

11:20 AM
@nebffa got to go again but \textbf{Question 1} \\ is bad in three ways (not bad for such a small fragment:-) It has an explicit font change, and explicit number, and an explicit line break. it should be \question or \item or some such with all the font and numbering being automatic

@DavidCarlisle lol :p. yeah i thought to use the exam package for this, but i decided against using it because it didn't have the kind of formattting i wanted
@DavidCarlisle i presume you are saying it is good to use something like what the exam package offers, but more basic?

@nebffa or even just stick \newcounter{question}\newcommand\question{\refstepcounter{question}\textbf\theq‌uestion}\par} in the preamble so you can use \question

@DavidCarlisle ok thanks david. i will ask some more questions if you are around tomorrow.
@DavidCarlisle i will use that neat command you just wrote

@TorbjørnT. Oh yes, but
\seq_map_inline:Nn \l_harish_choices_final_seq { \makebox[.5\linewidth][l]{\parbox{.5\linewidth}{##1}}\hspace{0pt plus .3\linewidth} }
 }
gives this:
but and in one line are not indented. I don't understand the expl3 code from egreg which needs to be changed to do this. :(

@HarishKumar Never really tried learning expl3 so I probably can't help. Easier to wait for @egreg.

11:34 AM
@TorbjørnT. Me too. That is why I am troubling @egreg :)

11:58 AM
@egreg When you get some free time can you please look into this please? No need to hurry though. Thanks.

12:15 PM
@AndrewStacey That's what I did in an answer which could be optimized (the definition of atan2 will most likely not change in the document):
\tikzset{
  declare function={% in case of CVS which switches the arguments of atan2
    atan3(\a,\b)=ifthenelse(atan2(0,1)==90, atan2(\a,\b), atan2(\b,\a));},
}

@nebffa note that is the simplest possible thing (although even that allows automatic referencing and (with hyperef) linking with \label and ref) but a proper definition using list \item or \section style command would do more, controlling indentation and discouraging page breaks just after the heading etc.

12:27 PM
@HarishKumar Oh, if the text doesn't fit in half a line you are in big trouble.

12:42 PM
@DavidCarlisle ummm if you're still here david, it might be best if i tell you what exactly i am doing
@DavidCarlisle i am generating all of my latex file from a python program
@DavidCarlisle at the moment, i make an entire question in python with all its subparts, and then i traverse that question and write out the latex
@DavidCarlisle so what i have been doing up until now is just indenting parts of the question in proportion to how deep in the question those parts are
@DavidCarlisle also, because that's all i know how to do with latex
@DavidCarlisle from what you are saying, it sounds like i could make a custom function based on \item
@DavidCarlisle that does most of what i want to do?
@DavidCarlisle the main two things being question lines, and indented whitespace

1:18 PM
@nebffa that's what latex lists do anyway try using \begin{enumerate}\item \begin{enumerate}.... If you let latex handle it (enumitem package makes it easy) then the generated document source will look a lot nicer. Compare the markup in the question with the markup on my answer (here it is case rather than Question, but same thing really) tex.stackexchange.com/questions/133511/…

1:36 PM
@Qrrbrbirlbel Pretty much what I do, except that I do a one-time test as you suggest. I guess the most optimal would be that if the inbuilt atan2 command is the one that you want then not to define a wrapper but just an alias. Since, allegedly, Dr Who can't kill Hitler, I guess the next best thing would be to fix the definition of atan2 in the PGF source right from the start.

Q: What is the "ponytail" in a knight's helmet called?

OmegaDoes the ponytail thing in a knight's helmet have its own name? Or are they just called ponytails?

@PauloCereda Pennacchio

1:52 PM
@egreg In Portuguese, pluma. :)

2 hours later…
3:37 PM
LaTeX3 folks: I would like to write the LaTeX3 equivalent of \let\oldexists\exists. Given that it takes no arguments, is it better to treat \oldexists as a token list variable (i.e., \tl_set_eq:NN \l__mymodule_oldexists_tl \exists) or as a control sequence (i.e., \cs_set_eq:NN \__mymodule_oldexists: \exists)?

@HenryDeYoung Probably a function, I think, as it's a document command (= function)

@JosephWright That's how I was leaning, too, but I felt slightly unsettled giving no argument specification after the :. Thanks.

4:07 PM
@HenryDeYoung Definitely \cs_set_eq:NN and with a signature. You can even use \cs_generate_variant:Nn on the alias, then. I gave an example some days ago: tex.stackexchange.com/a/133779/4427
@HenryDeYoung Not your case, but it's worth noticing it.

4:19 PM
People, @Jake is -602 from 100k

@egreg Roger that, leave it to me. :)

@DavidCarlisle And don't say I'm not sporting
@AndreaL. The basic idea is the same as David's. — egreg 5 mins ago

4:50 PM
@egreg but quite correctly I kept the points:-)

@DavidCarlisle I could offer a bounty to that question and give the rep points to egreg. :)

@PauloCereda It would be a waste of good rep points. You'd be better to give them to me.

@DavidCarlisle But you already have the green tick. :)

5:23 PM
@PauloCereda Don't dare!

@egreg :)
iOS 7 is very good for the iPad, so I recommend the update to iPad users. :)

5:44 PM
Hello :-)

@NicolaTalbot Yay Nicola is here!

@PauloCereda :-) It looks like I missed the chance to get a bounty last week for a glossaries question.
That will teach me to be really busy ;-)

@NicolaTalbot If I can make you feel better, Heiko understands arara way better than I do and answered a question before me. :)

@PauloCereda I wouldn't be surprised if Heiko understands glossaries way better than I do as well. :-)

@NicolaTalbot LOL
@Nicola: Meanwhile, @David got a TikZ badge by providing answers to TikZ questions via picture mode, plain TeX or using \tracingall. :)

5:52 PM
@PauloCereda LOL :-)

Dan
How can I force a table to display at the location I want it and then continue onto the next page? I am using the longtable package already

@Dan I find that longtable usually starts from where I put the beginning of the longtable environment, but @DavidCarlisle's the one to ask.

Dan
@NicolaTalbot it isn't working for me

6:10 PM
@Dan You surely don't have your longtable in a table environment, do you?

Dan
@egreg no, I had it in a figure and removing that made it go to separate pages
@egreg but it changes widths in the middle
@egreg all of a sudden the entire table gets wider
@egreg hold up, compiling it again fixed it
a fluke I guess?

6:31 PM
@egreg: Maybe you are also interested in the comment: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/134121/…

7:21 PM
@Dan You mustn't have longtable in a floating environment. The column widths are computed during several LaTeX runs; one or two are usually necessary, sometimes more.

Dan
@egreg gotcha, so that's why it takes numerous compiles

2 hours later…
8:57 PM
@Dan must be user error:-)

Dan
@DavidCarlisle it certainly was an ID10T error
:P

@PauloCereda silver no less

@DavidCarlisle You could give a keynote for this year's UK-TUG about the power of \tracingall and how manuals can be avoided. :)

@PauloCereda I could use the log file from this as slides
\tracingall
\documentclass{beamer}
\begin{document}
\end{document}

@DavidCarlisle How long will be the keynote?

9:03 PM
@DavidCarlisle Sweet Lord. :) You'll kill the audience except @JosephWright. :)

@PauloCereda :-)

not sure how big that is 240000 lines so far....
oops emacs is warning it's over 9MB..

@DavidCarlisle Try with vim. :)

@PauloCereda -bash: vim: command not found
@PauloCereda still running (22M of log file so far)
@PauloCereda yeh it's finished:
$ wc -l b1.log
1281762 b1.log
$ ls -lh b1.log
-rw-r--r--+ 1 davidc Domain Users 31M Sep 19 22:13 b1.log

9:19 PM
@DavidCarlisle Quite a long keynote indeed.

@egreg and any difficult questions I can defer to @JosephWright

1 hour later…
10:37 PM
@egreg Enrico, Does it mean that there is no rescue party? What to do then? Some of my answer do cross the limit. :(
@DavidCarlisle Emacs can open big files. I did it with nearly 4 lac lines! There is an addon (or whatever) to be installed. You can find it in the list inside Emacs.

@HarishKumar Typesetting alternatives in that way is bad. You can use a \parbox instead of \makebox. Unfortunately I have not the source here (it's in the machine at the office).

@egreg Thanks. You are still awake!. If you want, I can post the source again. And yes, we are forced to follow bad things some times :(

@HarishKumar Another half hour or so.

It isn't my answer that is big. Somebody typed it in word. And I want it in LaTeX ;)
@egreg Shall I repost the source if you are not tired? Or else tomorrow? I have two more days time. I don't want to squeeze your energy :)

@HarishKumar I can't promise to do it soon.
But it's better if you put it here now.

10:46 PM
@egreg Thanks. It is I tried with \parbox But the answers are not indented in the second line. I am putting the code below:
\documentclass[

@HarishKumar You're welcome

@egreg How many hours a day you sleep? 5 hours?
Because it must be almost 12 midnight there for you. And I see you here aging within 5-6 hours almost everyday.
