I see Norman Ramsey has created an account. Should I ask the question "Is TeX strongly typed or weakly typed?"

1 hour later…

@CharlesStewart Definitely. There are far too many kittens in the world.

Just approved one of xport's edits. The question was on the front page anyway so figured it was safe enough. But then I realised a down-side of that!
The question was on the front page because I'd just posted a new answer to it (it being a month or so old). Now everyone is going to think that it's on the front page just because xport edited it and not look and my amazing new answer! (I'm not going to link because I'm _not_ looking for more rep, just wanted to point out another side-effect of edit sprees.)

11:10 AM
@CharlesStewart I'm also someone who's against edits that don't bump the question. On tex.sx it could still work by having a high rep user approve the edit as minor, but I see too much potential of abuse if there are lots of high rep users (more than 1000 10K users on SO!).

11:46 AM
@HendrikVogt: *rolls a three and a two* Okay, so with that roll, I choose to delete one comment. Your turn.

@CharlesStewart @AndrewStacey That way the placekitten package is doomed to fail. =)

@PauloCereda Once someone defines \placekitten then it will only be a matter of time before someone else defines \placekitteninblender so I think that there's potential for both sides of the kitten debate.

12:43 PM
@AndrewStacey I'm too stupid to get the joke and to see where you got the dice, but I took my turn.

12:53 PM
@HendrikVogt Sorry! My bizarre sense of humour at the fore again. I seem to quite often get in to these "delete this comment and I'll delete that comment" situations that it felt like a bit of a game so the rolling the dice is to hint of a whiff of randomness in which comment I chose to delete. I was originally going for the obscure "Deleted. Your move.", but thought I'd make it a little more intriguing for anyone else reading.

I'm now here for four month and the site just told me I only had one "Good Answer" so far :-)
That badge names should be phrased a little better ;-)

I just found myself wanting to shift an arrow defined using nodes, felt sure I'd read it somewhere, did a little searching, and found it. Sadly, I'd already voted for the answer so couldn't do so again. So if anyone wants to do a little vote-trading ... tex.stackexchange.com/questions/1537/…
@MartinScharrer I was just trying to remember what the one below "Good Answer" is ... yes, I agree that the choice "Nice, Good, Great" could be rephrased a little.

1:13 PM
@AndrewStacey: I like "Nice" and "Great". "Good" isn't good here :-) because even a question with only a few answers could be good ones. Maybe "Nice" (10 up-votes), "Great" (25 instead of 100) and "Brilliant" or "Exceptional" for 100 upvotes would be better.
Anyway, this will not be changed I think. It is across all SX sites.

1:24 PM
@MartinScharrer There should be a badge for understanding the meaning of other badges. =)

@PauloCereda: Hell yes, most of the badge descriptions are very unclear.

1:49 PM
@AndrewStacey I don't know how often you play that game, but I have to admit that I'm indeed inviting you to it regularly. And thanks, your explanation confirmed what I somewhat expected :-)
@MartinScharrer I'd say that "good" is better than "nice", but of course you're right that it sounds ridiculous. However, one point is that on SO it's a lot easier to get 25 upvotes for a good answer.

2:14 PM
@HendrikVogt: Yes, indeed. Many badges which are difficult to get here are very much easier on SO, simply because there are A LOT of more people there.

I should win a badge for posting text in the wrong chat. Twice.

5:02 PM
@PauloCereda That (presumably) explains that strange "removed" in the "From Answers to Packages" chatroom. (See anything there of interest?)

5:14 PM
@AndrewStacey Sorry, I got the wrong tab in my browser, so my answer to this room went there. And as I couldn't find any "watch project" option in Launchpad, I like to keep track of updates by following the "From Answers to Packages" chatroom. =)

@PauloCereda I'd prefer people to keep an eye on the project there anyway as I feel it will help make the project more community-based, but there's no reason why there shouldn't be a "watch project" option except that this is the first project that I've ever set up in Launchpad so I don't know how to do things properly! If you have any experience that you'd be willing to share ...

5:28 PM
@PauloCereda: You can get updates about check-ins by clicking the subscribe button on code.launchpad.net/~tex-sx/tex-sx/development

@AndrewStacey I never used Launchpad before, so I'm still lost. Probably I'm a little spoiled by GitHub, which has a "watch" option, so it works like smart bookmarks for projects, so every commit is displayed on a timeline. Despite using TeX/LaTeX for quite some time, I never played with its "bowels" yet, but I'd like to contribute with packages or code as soon as I earn a little extra knowledge. =)
@Caramdir Thanks, I didn't know about it!

5:45 PM
@Caramdir That reminds me. Where are your contributions going? I'm a bit lost with the organisation of this project! Poking around in Launchpad, I get the sense that there are at least two locations for code and at some point we should sort that out.

@AndrewStacey I currently don't have a lot of time to spend on it (should be better in three weeks). The second branch is there, because it waits for Martin's implementation of grids.

@Caramdir That wasn't meant to be a "Why haven't you done more you lazy little ..."! I realise that time ebbs and flows a bit. I don't often go to the launchpad site (working locally and then pushing my code there seems to be fine) and when I do then I get a bit lost, hence my question.

@AndrewStacey BTW Andrew, I'm not sure if you suggested this book or if you recommended it after one's suggestion on MathOverflow, but it's really great: "How To Solve It".

@PauloCereda Do you mean Polya's? I've certainly recommended it at times so it could well have been me. I don't own many actual books (preferring to steal them from the library) but that's one that I'm happy to have on my shelves. It just made sense when I read it!

6:00 PM
@AndrewStacey Yeah, the very same! Very interesting, it's helping a lot. =)

Although I see why closing this question: Best LaTeX Editor for the Mac makes some sense, I'm wondering if having 3 big lists organized by OS would actually be a better way of handling this question.

7:46 PM
@AlanMunn Maybe just organize the combined list better so that it is immediately obvious on which OS the editors run (and where they are integrated with the OS). Many editors are multi-platform, so that one would need to copy the answers between the questions (and keep any edits in sync).

@Caramdir But since the main organization of these big lists is by number of votes, is it really possible to organize the list in any rational way? (I agree that cross-platform solutions pose a potential problem.)

@AlanMunn I'd suggest making an accepted overview answer (however, the op is not a regular user, so I don't know how to mark an answer as accepted)
@AlanMunn Some proper formatting could go a long way of making the list more usable. See the edited AUCTeX entry for an example: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/339/latex-editors-ides/356#356

@Caramdir Yes, that might work. Although it might be hard to come up with consensus on what would go in there. One other problem I find about these big lists is that the voting skews the results in funny ways, because it reflects a very mature computational base which doesn't necessarily reflect the realities of many users (especially new users). Emacs therefore gets oversold IMO; I gave up using emacs many years ago in favour of TeXShop. And for programming on a Mac I use TextWrangler.
@Caramdir Yes, I see that some formatting of this sort would help matters.

8:01 PM
@AlanMunn Maybe you could expand the TeXShop answer a bit to say what makes it more useful than Emacs (or others). The current entry doesn't really ”sell” it.

8:31 PM
@Caramdir Well I don't want to start an editor war, but yes I could do that. (Not so much to make it appear better than emacs, but just to explain what it can and can't do.)

11:52 PM
Some people just lost a lot of reputation: Many answers in tex.stackexchange.com/questions/339/latex-editors-ides/356#356 were incorrectly not marked CW, but are now. (Thank you @mods)
@AlanMunn That is what I intended.
