@percusse I voted to undelete, so now the question has been undeleted. What do you suggest now? What's the standard procedure for wrong answers?

12:41 AM
@tohecz ooh gimme cake! :)

Happy birthday, @MarcoDaniel! :)

@MarcoDaniel: It is a birthday's GIFt from me.

@PauloCereda ^ Here you go :)

I so want to mark this as spam but didn't

A: copy the content of an environment

Guido JorgThe package to use in this case is: http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/catchfilebetweentags/ gives the clearest code for this type of system of documents, each one citing perhaps parts of other. Basically, a system of organization based on placing tags with some kind indexing ...

@GonzaloMedina I think leaving as is, is an option.

Good morning

@ChristianHupfer Good morning! :)

@ChristianHupfer @HenriMenke Good morning!

@egreg Thank you again for helping me out with expl3 yesterday!

@egreg @HenriMenke: Thanks. Sorry, I am at the computer, than awaz ... a little confusing this morning

Today I implemented 4th order Runge Kutta in expl3

9:19 AM
@HenriMenke You're welcome!

  \fp_set:Nn \l_rk_ki_fp   { \rk_ode:nn { #1                   } { #2      } }

@HenriMenke It's common among students to call it “Kunge-Rutta”, but one should know Italian for understanding the joke. Too many \fp_set:Nn, I'd say. ;-)
@HenriMenke Instead of \space, there is \c_space_tl

@egreg I put everything into fps to make it a little bit more readable. In principle you're right I could have put #1 instead of \l_rk_y_fp, etc.
@egreg \c_space_tl looks useful, thanks! I didn't have time yet to read the whole interface3.pdf.

@HenriMenke I'm not sure I understand the definition of \rk_ode:nn with two parameters, as only one is used.

@egreg This is for the case that the ODE depends on y and t. I just simplified the problem by putting in y' = - y

9:26 AM
@HenriMenke I'm not sure I'd use it for some complicated equation. I guess there are some slightly faster programs. ;-)

@egreg Of course there are, but are they as much fun as TeX?

@HenriMenke :)
@DavidCarlisle Are you anxious? The test match is scheduled to begin in half an hour.

@egreg Maybe you read the latest TUGboat. There was an article about solving ODEs using LuaTeX. It was also published in PracTeX journal: wiki.pctex.com/index.php/2013-1/varona

@HenriMenke As I said elsewhere, differential equations are not my cup of tea. When I started to see PDE, I decided for algebra. ;-)

@DavidCarlisle BBC Weather's Nina Ridge: "We'll see some sunny spells, but there will be patches of thicker cloud this afternoon, although temperatures should rise to 25C. Tomorrow will start dry and fine, but there is the risk of an afternoon shower. The outlook for the last three days is dry and fine."
@DavidCarlisle Praying for rain seems to be useless. ;-)

10:15 AM
@egreg you have to have faith
@HeikoOberdiek congratulations on the 100K :-)

@DavidCarlisle Thanks.

@tohecz :)

@egreg not so bad so far: England: 13-0 (4.3 overs)

12:05 PM
To all the expl3 guys: How do I do \openout and \write in expl3?

@HenriMenke Look for \ior_ (read) and \iow_ (write)

@egreg Thanks!

At lunch: England: 78-1 (29.0 overs) India: Yet to bat

Man do I love pgfplots.
Problem not to forget to write... :)
Alright, back to plotting for now.

2:28 PM
Hey! Still just one wicket and 76 runs by Cook! England: 163-1 (58.2 overs) India: Yet to bat

@egreg So England is winning? :)

@PauloCereda India has yet to bat.

@egreg Oh.

India is playing in something?

2:43 PM
@egreg This room doubles as the sports channel. Thanks.

@FaheemMitha We're missing football.

You guys should consider live commentary.
@egreg I seem to remember some talk about the World Cup earlier. Or was that somewhere else?
Australia, India, Pakistan and the UK are always having these endless Tests. Why do they bother? Plus they're playing the most boring game in the world. Aside from tiddleywinks, possibly. At least they could change the name to Pop Quiz or something.

1 hour later…

#fallofwicket England: 213-2 (76.3 overs) India: Yet to bat

4:13 PM
Hello...

@ChristianHupfer Hi

Good afternoon :)

Thanks... I am switching from computer to the kitchen ... cooking and Texing ;-)

@egreg
please help!!!!

whats the issue here
anybody there????

@subhamsoni: What's the matter?

4:23 PM
I want to make table
I have to submit
my project
documetation
tmrw

@subhamsoni: "REFERENCE PAPER" seems to be too large for a 0.5in parbox, depending on the fontsize of course

@subhamsoni But what is the problem you find with the table?

I want a table like this

@subhamsoni Maybe this is what you want:
\documentclass{article}
\begin{document}
\begin{tabular}{|p{.5in}|p{1in}|p{2in}|}
\hline
\multicolumn{1}{|c|}{REFERENCE PAPER} & \multicolumn{1}{c|}{TECHNIQUE USED} & \multicolumn{1}{c|}{CONFIGURATION MECHANISM}\\
\hline
a & b & c
\end{tabular}
\end{document}

but
not the contents ;)
the strcuture

4:26 PM
@subhamsoni So you want fixed width columns and the headings to wrap?

@subhamsoni: The table looks ok, however, on first compile it complained, there was some strange invisible character in it.

@subhamsoni Maybe this?
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{array}
\newcolumntype{H}[1]{>{\centering\arraybackslash}p{#1}}
\begin{document}
\begin{tabular}{|p{1in}|p{1in}|p{2in}|}
\hline
\multicolumn{1}{|H{1in}|}{REFERENCE PAPER} & \multicolumn{1}{H{1in}|}{TECHNIQUE USED} & \multicolumn{1}{H{2in}|}{CONFIGURATION MECHANISM}\\
\hline
a & b & c
\end{tabular}
\end{document}
@subhamsoni And BTW, you should almost always avoid using vertical lines in tables. Use the booktabs package (and read its documentation for why).

sure :)
does this have verticals?

@subhamsoni Which? I modified your first example which looks nothing like the image you posted.

I dont want verticals
thats y I posted it

4:34 PM
@subhamsoni So why did you put verticals in your code?
@subhamsoni The | character in the column specificaiton adds a vertical line.

@subhamsoni So here's your table without them:
\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{array}
\usepackage{booktabs}
\newcolumntype{H}[1]{>{\centering\bfseries\arraybackslash}p{#1}}
\begin{document}
\begin{tabular}{p{1in}p{1in}p{2in}}
\toprule
\multicolumn{1}{H{1in}}{REFERENCE PAPER} & \multicolumn{1}{H{1in}}{TECHNIQUE USED} & \multicolumn{1}{H{2in}}{CONFIGURATION MECHANISM}\\
\midrule
a & b & c \\
\bottomrule
\end{tabular}
\end{document}

@subhamsoni Maybe using a few more words in your questions and responses might make things a bit clearer...

how to do it?
anybody there?

@subhamsoni It can't be aligned to the header unless you make the column narrower. All the subsequent columns are aligned to the left relative to the total width of the column (as you have specified).

ok how to make it narrower?

@subhamsoni I'm sorry Subham, but how much of the code you've written do you actually understand? You need to read some basic things about LaTeX tables if you don't know that the p{2in} (and therefore H{2in}) sets a fixed column width. So to make it narrower, change 2in to something less.
@subhamsoni I don't mind helping you, but you're beginning to look like you haven't put even minimal effort into understanding very basic things. That combined with adding "anybody there" almost immediately after writing something is beginning to try my patience with you.

@Paulo: So, I think, I have greatest aspirations on v4. Actually, I wrote unzipsfx.yaml as an addition for zip.yaml, of course with password-option (but all on v3 ;) )

But it depends on scrbase, which is forbidden at my university as part of KOMA-script. I really don't know why, and I won't start a discussion about that topic, many have tried before and all have lost. — NobbZ 22 mins ago
Why would a university make such restrictions? ^^^^^^
@cis Hi :)

cis
@Clemens: Hi (selber Fisch) :)

@cgnieder Really weird.

@cis You need to write @cgnieder or I won't be pinged. Or you hover over my post and click on the little arrow on the right. Then you can answer that post
@AlanMunn I can understand not to allow a KOMA class. But a support package?

cis
@cgnieder: I understand.

5:13 PM
@cgnieder Also, it's not clear what it means to forbid it, since you can only tell its being used from the LaTeX source. And both TeX Live and MikTeX include it.

@cis actually if you @c+ TAB the user name is completed and you don't have to type the whole name :)
@AlanMunn That's exactly the point: you have to check the log file in case any other package loads it. And then maybe exchange said package for an alternative (if there is one)

@cgnieder Right, but what university level could possibly care about that? And I thought US thesis offices were crazy.
@cgnieder That made me curious. It turns out only 1 package requires it (coolthms) and some custom classes for TU-Dresden. But your point still hold, of course.

@AlanMunn Some of my packages use other KOMA support packages like scrlfile or scrextend. I wonder if they're forbidden, too...

5:30 PM
@cgnieder I'm trying to get my head around the level of the university administration that would actually impose (and enforce) such a ban.

@AlanMunn I actually can't believe that they really enforce this. To much trouble for ... I don't know for what, actually

@cgnieder I could only see it at the level of a research group where the lead professor uses memoir or something, and document sources are shared for collaboration. It really seems unlikely that an entire university would or could forbid it.

5:54 PM
@AlanMunn Seems that the official thesis template loads scrbase and scrhack itself :) tex.stackexchange.com/questions/193448/…

@cgnieder LOL

End of day 1: England: 247-2 (90.0 overs) India: Yet to bat

@egreg rain not needed?

@DavidCarlisle The match is long. ;-)

@egreg been out all day just got back in time for your match report

6:04 PM
@DavidCarlisle It seems that your captain is batting well.

@egreg looks that way

cis
@Pleasedon'ttouch @Please: looks good - did you write this interactivity with latex - if yes, how?

6:21 PM
@cgnieder Quoting again from Peter Wilson: “Using the \nonzeroparskip will set the spacing to what might be a reasonable non-zero value.” And the footnote says “Except that all values except zero are unreasonable.”

@egreg :) Seems like the memoir manual is fun to read.

Is there anyone around using TeXShop? Could you try to reproduce a problem for me? It should literally take less than a minute. I want to figure out if TeXShop 3.36.2 is broken on my machine on broken in general.

@Szabolcs Yes, I do (and am at the moment.)

@AlanMunn Can you try Command-N (to make a new empty document), then Templates -> LatexTemplate? It doesn't insert anything for me. It's the only template that's broken, all the rest work, and I never messed with the templates or ~/Library/TeXShop.

@cgnieder A bit too long, but valuable.

6:32 PM

@Szabolcs Thanks, I had no idea where it was. :) Hang on a second.
@Szabolcs Yes, it brings up an amsart document template.

@AlanMunn Thanks! Then it's my machine only. I'll figure it out.
(Though in the past it made a \documentclass{article} ...)

@Szabolcs Inside ~/Library/TeXShop/Templates there should be a LaTeXTemplate.tex.

@AlanMunn Yes, there was, with the correct contents. Yet it didn't insert it. Now I removed all of ~/Library/TeXShop/, which appears to have fixed it.

@Szabolcs Yes, that's a way, although that might zap your macros etc.

6:37 PM
I know, that's why I didn't want to do it. It'll take a while to set up everything again. Fortunately I didn't have a lot of settings.

@Szabolcs You could probably just remove the templates folder itself and restart TeXShop (untested).
@Szabolcs Alternatively, you can copy the original copy from the TeXShop.app bundle and leave everything else alone.

cis
@Pleasedon'ttouch Ah, ok. Mhh... I think a special compilation is needed for this code, which I do not know at this moment.

@cis latex followed by dvips followed by ps2pdf
or just use xelatex (much slower).

6:57 PM
@AlanMunn Thanks! In the meantime I re-did the configuration, all seems fine now. Yes, I should have just tried re-copying that folder ...

@cis Out of curiosity, would you like to have a sneak peek on how one of your rules would look like in the new syntax? :)

cis
@PauloCereda Sure, I like 'sneak previews' ;)

@cis Cool. :) Which one of your rules would you like to check? :)
@Szabolcs: ooh I saw you in the Mathematica area. :) Apparently you are an expert. :)

cis
@PauloCereda Ouh, thats hard - lets choose the zip-rule, ok?

@cis Sure! :)
Gimme a minute, please.

7:36 PM
@cis: done. :) I wrote it from the top of my head, it might be optmized, but you'll get the idea:
rule = [
    id : "zip",
    name : "Zip",
    arguments : [ "options", "output", "name", "extension", "data", "encrypt", "password" ],
    description : "Zip and unzip files",
    authors : [
        "cis"
    ],
    requires : 6.0
]

commands = [
    [
        name : "The zip program",
        command : {

	require('output')

	def program = obtain('program', 'zip')

	if (defined('unzip')) {
		program = check(true, 'unzip', 'un'.concat(program), program)
	}

	def options = obtain('options', '')
@cgnieder: ^^ sneak preview for you too.

@PauloCereda Looks too C++ to me.

@egreg It's a scripting language. Programming stuff.
;)

@PauloCereda cool!

That's why the plan of forking. :)
@egreg: I will keep the simple format with arara, and allow more complex stuff with the new fork. :)

@PauloCereda So long as the user's syntax is compatible with the former version, I'm happy.

7:45 PM
@egreg Not with the fork. :) The original tool will remain compatible. :)
And even updated. :)

@PauloCereda This is asking for trouble.

@AlanMunn I blame people. All I ever wanted was a simple string expansion. :)

Have you seen Turbulent Skies?

@PauloCereda so you've decided? You're going to fork instead of updating? Then I'll start memorizing the new name :)

@cgnieder I'm almost sure there will be a fork. Apparently it will cause less damage. :)

cis
7:59 PM
@PauloCereda Ok, thank you for this preview. Mmh, in private - am I wrong or was the old syntax easier? Maybe I could explain exacter later, in this moment, I have to create 'breaded schnitzel'

@cis The old syntax was easier in the sense it had less things to do, perhaps. :) As I said, I'll keep both approaches, but in separated tools. :)

@cis Wienerschnitzel? I'm arriving.

any context expert here?

@s__C Not that I'm aware of. We don't have that many ConTeXt users on the site, although the few we do have are quite knowledgeable.

k, like Aditya. What I don't understand with ConTeXT is why they don't feel the need to extend the user base / provide better manuals.

8:13 PM
@s__C They're a pretty small group to begin with, I think, and writing manuals takes time away from writing code, so most programmers don't like to do it... And there are so many good packages out there for LaTeX that it's a tough sell to get LaTeX users to switch, I think.

except grid typesetting...
I mainly agree with you @AlanMunn, but currently LaTeX is driving me nuts

@s__C Sure, there are some other things (like XML) that ConTeXt excels at too, but for most of us, these aren't really a concern.
@s__C Since you have a ConTeXt question, it would seem that it's driving you nuts... :)

yes. Is there any plan to release something better or more adequate for slides than beamer?
@AlanMunn in ConTeXt as I'm new it doesn't drive me nuts. Plus my question was general enough to include LaTeX, but one unsatisfying answer so far.

@s__C In the OpenSource world there are no such things as 'plans'. (Or maybe there are only plans...)

just that everyone seems to dislike beamer but due to the lack of alternative they have to use it

8:21 PM
@s__C Yes, that's true. But creating a replacement would be a mammoth undertaking, so until someone decides to, there's no real way to get things off the ground. This is the way of free software I think.

and maybe also why so many potential user discard it...

Q: Slide template KOMA-script

s__CI'm trying to significantly modify the template for creating slides with KOMA-script. Four things remain incomplete (indeed here are the questions): The table of content style, which I'd prefer to use without section/subsection numbers (a la beamer like) An elegant solution for allowing the fo...

@s__C ^^^

@s__C Sure, but everyone has some day job that also keeps them busy, so there's not much of a solution. I'm always amazed when some substantial new package shows up.

@Johannes_B in fact my active question is not that one...

@s__C Didn't realize that you werde the author of the question. I wanted to provide an alternative :-)

8:26 PM
now I think this koma thing was a wrong good idea to create slides, as an article (let's group all written documents) is so different from slides

Good evening

cis
8:51 PM
@egreg Yes, that is correct 'Wiener Schnitzel' :()

@s__C I like beamer, for one. However, I know that slides have to be very simple, therefore I don't need anything fancy like non-sense positioning of stuff on slides.
@ChristianHupfer hi

@tohecz: Greetings to Prague ;-)

@ChristianHupfer currently yes, Prague, for a while

@tohecz: Just for summer?

@ChristianHupfer it's a bit more complicated than that ;)

9:02 PM
@tohecz: Complicated is relative ;-)

@ChristianHupfer ok, places where I've spent at least 5 days in last 6 months are really numerous
IIRC, 6 or 7

@tohecz: You are young, so it's fine for you, but in my old days... I prefer just one place ;-)

@ChristianHupfer I hate travelling

@tohecz: Well, why do you travel then? Job? Or are just moving from one place to another one?

@ChristianHupfer PhD studies in two countries

9:08 PM
@tohecz: Ok, I had a look into your profile... Paris and Prague, that's troublesome

@ChristianHupfer the troublesome parts are that (1) my sups want me to travel, (2) I want to meet all the good people, (3) I love the two cities :)

@tohecz This reminds me a joke of my supervisor's. A guy was invited by a friend for a week; at his return friends asked him about the stay. “Sailing in the morning, sailing in the afternoon, then discussions about sailing in the evening," tells the guy. "So you enjoyed your stay very much!" says a friend. "No, sailing for me is a pain in the ****".

@egreg sounds familiar

@tohecz: I know what you mean... I hated the travelling stuff too, so I dropped out of science after the PhD

@ChristianHupfer it's likely gonna be my way, too

9:14 PM
@tohecz: But, please, don't become a teacher afterwards :D

@ChristianHupfer not my plan. If I stayed at the university, I would like to teach a small bit at a high school, but no more

@tohecz: Keep us informed....

@ChristianHupfer still 1.5 yrs to go with my PhD
and afterwards, I might become a professional typesetter, if I wanted, I would likely get the position

cis
@egreg You like 'Wiener Schnitzel'? :()

@tohecz: In a company of your own?

9:25 PM
@ChristianHupfer not really

@tohecz: I think, TeX.SX is a good training for that ;-)

@ChristianHupfer my part time is the training

@tohecz: Nevertheless, just keep us informed ... even in two years ;-)

@ChristianHupfer ok :)

@tohecz: It was a hot day here, I am quite tired, it's time to get to bed. Have a good night

9:31 PM
@ChristianHupfer I have to get home yet, I'm at my parents'

@tohecz: Then drive/walk carefully ;-)

@ChristianHupfer 5 minutes walk, I'll be fine :)

@tohecz: See you, bye

bye

@cis Of course I do! Did you prepare one for me? ;-)

cis
9:55 PM
@egreg of course, what do you prefer for addendum? I choose chips. Another possibility would be 'potato salad'
PS: This was an archiv file

@cis Either is good. ;-) But I've seen bigger Wiener Schnitzeln than that. :)

ooh I think I had one of those in SP the other day. :)

10:50 PM
@PauloCereda new phone ^^^

@DavidCarlisle Why do I need two || in the tabular specification to get the line between the two columns: tex.stackexchange.com/a/193512/2693 (the code there gives no line.)

@AlanMunn looks like a bug (not one of my packages:-) I'll see if I can see what happens..

Why are you defining the column type J with an argument? — egreg 14 secs ago

@egreg Because I had that before and changed it but forgot to remove the [1]... so that's the reason.

@AlanMunn :)

11:05 PM
@DavidCarlisle Problem solved; no bug (in the package).

@AlanMunn user error, usual source of problems:-)
4

@egreg I've fixed the code in the answer. Thanks.
@DavidCarlisle Indeed. I got a frantic email from a student using my thesis class "I have to deposit my thesis tomorrow and your class doesn't work". They had a previous version...

@AlanMunn reply saying "you failed your thesis" then you'll have one less user pestering you.

@DavidCarlisle Nah, it was a good thesis. And the stuff that didn't work was crap from our graduate school, the most amazing one being that since all headings are bold, and what's in the TOC must match the headings, all lines of the TOC must be bold!

@AlanMunn There's an obvious difference between “a” and “a”, can't you see it? I'm really surprised!

11:12 PM
@egreg Yes, there is: one is super ugly... :)

@AlanMunn They want double spacing, of course.

@egreg Naturally.
Since there's been all that cricket talk today, I thought I'd post this. I assume @PauloCereda has posted it before...

11:42 PM
Hi, I made a document and suddenly a part of my output is not being compiled.
I cannot reproduce this effect with only a part of the document - it seems like some capacity is exceeded.

@1010011010 You realize this is not a lot of information to go on...does anything show up in the log?

I'm not used to this kind of problem - what do I do to fix this?
Hold on.

@1010011010 And what exactly do you mean by 'part of the output isn't compiled'?

@AlanMunn I'm using a lot of environments, I just created another and it simply doesn't show. Other environments that I created (of the same kind) appear as normally. Decreasing the amount of environments used fixes the issue, but that would take sooooooo long. Also decreasing the environments is just papering over the cracks anyway.
